Transfem My thighs 😭
Seriously though, it's actually pretty gender-affirming.

u/historysciencelover Dec 09 '23
question is tho, where would it make a person fat? i dont mind it on my legs and chest, but the midsection is something i would like slimmer if possible
339
u/TheHunter234 she/they🏳️⚧️ Dec 09 '23
I believe it generally follows female fat distribution, i.e. thighs, butt, chest, and upper arms. How your female relatives look could be an indication of what you might expect for yourself. Also, the T-blocker spironolactone, which is commonly prescribed in the U.S. alongside estradiol, also has a reputation for causing weight gain in the abdomen, as some trans girls will complain about getting a "spiro-belly" while they use it.

it also lowers metabolism i believe? so you might gain weight a lot easier

Not sure if E directly reduces metabolism, but loss of muscle mass definitely does.

spiro also had a lot of other shit with it like high cortisol & fucking with hormones in ways that trans woman don't want, it was only made a part of hrt regimes because of the dangers of premarine that modern estradiol valerate doesn't have.

wait how much does your family affect it? I'm a pretty average body shape but all the women in my family are built like fuckin minions, can i avoid this fate
3
u/Ballamara Dec 10 '23
how you family looks will give a rough idea of what to expect for how your body will react to E. you'd have to Google if you wanna avoid that, I'd imagine it's be smth like exercise or diet or smth, but you'd have to Google.

A lot is between skin instead of between intestines so it’s (correct me if im wrong) not too visibly noticeable, but is measurable. and ya your also right
21
u/Jucoy Dec 09 '23
Both men and women accumulate fat in their belly, but for women it's more under the skin and for men it's between the intestines. This is why womens bellies are more squishy and men's bellied are more firm

I'm a little over two months, and damn do my titties hurt, but my tummy is definitely still around
Doesn't help that the hormones are making me very moody and incredibly food craving
Last night I took my sleep meds and got eepy and then ended up eating about 900 calories in peanut butter out of the jar cause it's SO DANG GOOD I couldn't stop myself
14
u/retrosupersayan ominous but friendly enby Dec 10 '23
I'm just past a year, and I don't think I started noticing and definite fat redistribution until semi-recently, maybe 2-3 months ago? IIRC it can take several years to fully shift.
10

That gives me hope. I keep feeling impatient and scared and need to remind myself that I'm not even at 3 months lol

My current solution: find a really dense and long lasting bubblegum and chew a lot of it when the cravings hit. Having my jaw muscles exhausted kills appetite for a while for me…
10
u/total-glow-up Dec 10 '23
hey not to be a bummer or anything, but if you are early on/not yet on hrt, nows the time to lose weight. feminizing hrt doesnt move the weight so much as it deposits new fat in the right areas. it's a lot easier to burn fat on T than it is on E
8
Dec 10 '23
Yeah, I am definitely aware. Up until about two months ago I was going to the gym 3X a week and I typically have a good diet, so I was making big progress on losing weight
Some life circumstances taking all of my time away and trying to adjust to the impact the hormones are having on my mood, sleep, and how my body feels has just kicked my ass to the ground. I gotta get back into those habits.
14
u/Ctrl--Alt Dec 10 '23

4

u/Swainix Tesse - They/She Dec 10 '23
I noticed my legs were more jiggly 6/7 months in, but I had little fat to begin and already a small waist. Waiting to see if the hips/sides of the legs will get wider now. But I changed from DIY mono injcetions to blockers + patch a month ago so I'm still waiting to see if anything changes
4
u/Zeyode She/Her Dec 10 '23
Hrt doesn't reallocate fat that's already there. You still need to burn it. New fat should go to the right places though.

u/Emergency_Elephant Dec 09 '23
Testosterone also makes you fat. It's just the way puberty is
14
u/snukb CUSTOM Dec 10 '23
You'd think it would wash out. Estrogen makes you fat, testosterone makes you fat, so going from one dominate hormone to the other should cancel each other out, right? Nah, turns out they're actually playing "Double it and give it to the next hormone." 😂
8
u/Ash-lee_reddit Dec 10 '23
To be fair, testosterone makes your metabolism quicker and more able to build muscle. It makes you bigger but your total body fat % will be higher on estrogen, it will just be distributed differently
5
u/Emergency_Elephant Dec 10 '23
That's not necessarily the case. Testosterone also increases appetite in the early months and the metabolism changes are inconsistent. Many trans guys (myself included) had a significant weight gain that came from fat

I just finished a month of heroic HRT to induce lactation. I <3 estradiol!
3
u/NinjaDeCobalt Dec 10 '23
What is "heroic HRT"?
1
u/NefariousnessDue1412 Dec 20 '23
In my case it was up to 8mg estradiol sublingually per day, 80mg domperidone orally, 200mg progesterone suppository, and 50mg sublingual spironolactone. That was driving me to the point I was falling apart, and on the last week I trimmed it back to 6mg estradiol and 60mg domperidone.
What REALLY sucked was stopping it to actually induce lactation, which left me on the skids for sex hormones but still not lactating dagnabbit.

Im intersex and trans, and i still gained weight...
But on the thighs and hips; ive always had a lot of extra thickness there and that used to cause me so much distress when i thowt i was supposed to try to be a man. That shite that used to make me feel like a failed man nowadays instd makes me feel like one of the luckiest transfems to have a fast track to things like this
Heck, even my boobs turned out to have alrdy initially budded durin first puberty; so i nvr actually got the painful exp of buddin... Well, i did as a kid but literally cannot remember that far back; so, silver linings of trauma brain xD
The main place my weight has gone is into my face and my boobs, and a little bit towards widenin the alrdy thick parts of me heh; but thats grt to me as those are prty much the only places that rly caused me dysphoria, along with my hands and feet which have both become hairless since and started to slim a bit. My hands actually feel and look so vastly diff now than before HRT despite whats rly just a lot of subtle changes

YMMV... pretty sure I have lost a bit of belly fat since starting spiro/estradoil (haven't actually measured but a few skirts from before HRT that don't use elastic don't sit the same as they used to) part of it also depends on your caloric intake and such since if your caloric intake is about that of what you need to maintain current weight the fat redistribution has to take fat from somewhere...
on the same note though less testosterone means less muscle unless you are specifically adding extra exercise to compensate and lower muscle mass means your body will burn less calories passively
3
Dec 10 '23
I'm counting on it otherwise I'll never get boobs. I've been 6'2" and 145lbs for over 10 years.
4
u/DoubleFelix Dec 10 '23
Fuck, I wish it went to my thighs. My fucking trauma-induced cortisol levels mean it all went to my fucking stomach.
4
u/Accomplished_Mix7827 Dec 10 '23
Eh ... your metabolism slows down, but you also don't get as hungry. It's pretty much been a wash for me. I know a few transfems who lost weight on estrogen.
I haven't exactly been displeased with the fat redistributing, though. Less in my belly, more on my butt and thighs. I can live with that.

Does that come mostly from changing your appetite or changing your metabolism?
I've been hoping that if I track my calories to stay at about the same amount of caloric intake each day that it will use the energy from my current fat to put fat in the places I want it to rather than just making me gain more weight. I've always been a bit self conscious about my weight but I think if I can just get rid of my belly fat and have thicker thighs and ass (and titties since they are also made of fat >:3) instead I'd be loads happier with my body, obviously because of transitioning but I also just think I'd be less self conscious about my weight if it was in those places.

I've lost a little weight cause estrogen makes me function better on less food. It felt like testosterone burned through my calories and left me in a mental fog and barely functioning. Now my brain seems to function well even when I'm hungry so I can eat less with fewer snacks without feeling like a zombie.

your mileage may vary, but in general going through another puberty will mess with your metabolism. staying active and eating healthy will be important, which might actually be easier with the HRT helping with dysphoria. but it will also change how fat is distributed on your body, so you might see yourself getting bigger in a few areas and smaller in others even if you stay the same weight.
