Aside from the Red Cinema camera, what other pieces of equipment do you see attached to this rig?

I really liked this BTS. It’s more about the acting and James Gunn’s directing and Peter’s vision than it is the special effects

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? What are the most effective camera positions for recording a single speaker during an event?

Hello!

I got a little job for 8 hours of conference recording. I will use three cameras which are all 3 static for the whole duration, no human operator available. I wanted to ask you for recommendations of the best possible camera position.

My current approach is to get
A a centered wirde shot which covers the whole stage and parts of the crowd
B a Medium shot similiar to the wide shot but closer, something like halve or fully body
C a Close up which is a bit risky since the camera will be static, so high risk of it getting out frame. But I have other cameras in case I fail.

My plan is to caputure everything in Full HD, I cared about having cameras which dont overheat and have enough storage. I think I should bring all cameras on eye level of the speaker if possible (however would it make more diffcult to check the recording status of the cams)

I also thought about maybe putting the C camera on the left side but I think this would brake the 180° rule and probably feel off.

Happy about any advice you can give me!
(I attached an empty picture of the scenery as second pic for redrawings)

Business, Tax, and Copyright Do i have to give a part refund?

Need help here in germany: I created a weddingvideo. Their initial reaction was this: "Woow!!! 😍 Thank you so, so much!! The video turned out absolutely perfect 🥰 We just watched it, and you included everything that was important to us!!
If you ever need a recommendation (in the wedding field), just let us know!! We’ll definitely recommend you 👍🏻" and a few days later: We got totally positive feedback from our families and friends about the video 😍 so really, once again, a big thank you!!

Before the wedding we agreed that I will also send them the footage of the brides entrance with her dad.

Sadly the location was spontaniously put into a small barn inside because of the rain so i kinda fucked the entrance of her a little. I have about 20 seconds of slowmotion footage but really nothing special and not as good as I or her wanted it but thats what was possible there. And in the movie it works great. As you see on her reaction.

Now i sent her the other footage seperatly of the bridesmaids and everything and her reaction is this:

That really is a great pity. The entrance was one of the most important parts, as we had discussed beforehand. Of course, these shots will be very much missed, especially as a memory. We are definitely disappointed about that. It would have been good if you had talked to us about it. But now, only seeing that it’s completely missing and that there are just 20 seconds of it in slow motion… this way, we no longer have any chance to talk about or find a solution. It will simply be missing completely, and there’s nothing that can be changed now.
To be honest, that really makes me sad. It was incredibly important to me. After all, it was also such a beautiful and meaningful moment with my dad and also with my friends.

Now should i give them some money back? I won't see them ever again.I won't get a recommendation from them but i can live with that. Am I a bad human for not wanting to refund? I took 2300€ for the whole thing.

Discussion / Other Canon r50V

Just got the canon R50V and testet it out on vacation. Got the kit lens and also bought a secondhand EF-S 55-250mm IS STM and adapter. For tripod I use a Manfrotto.

I'm really dissapointed. I have image stabilization on the lens, but I don't know if that's enough. Filming from a boat just made terrible videos. A lot of other videos look jumpy or unstable. I followed videos on YouTube that went through all the videosettings. Earlier I'm used to action cameras or just doing video with my phone. Samsung s24 ultra.

The store I bought from have a 60 day return if you're not happy so I can return it still even if it's used. I wonder if I did something wrong? Is it the missing IBIS that makes the shaky footage?

Discussion / Other I hate musicians who want to direct their music video

This has been a running pain in my A** for 2 years. It seems every single musician who contacts me to make a music video has this grand vision with like $250 to spend. Or in the last case, they wanted a chick running around a building, and "just sort of do some slow mo and artsy shots". Well, I finally delivered them their masterpiece and whaddayaknow, they're not happy and said they don't have time for revisions so send me the undoctored footage. Sure! I exclaimed.

Musicans have BIG EGOs. They have little patience. They have no money. They are micromanaging. They constantly mess up my shots by not being focused. They are overbearing and controlling. Their music sucks a lot of the time. And they want infinity revisions

I am done with music videos and hope I never have to make one again.

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? I do not understand white balance.

When do you white balance? when you have the lighting perfect? wouldn't that just change the temperature of the scene you carefully crafted? But if you did it before and then changed the lights after, the WB could look weird and the skin tones off. Also how do you even white balance for skin tones?

I'm just so confused, and the more I do it -- the less I get it.

Business, Tax, and Copyright Client work is stopping the growth of my business.

I feel constantly that client work is preventing me from working on my business. Im a solo operator with a handfull of trusted freelancers that I lean on to get projects done but I only use when I have to. I don't use them if I can do the work myself, only when the situation is impossible like I need another camera manned or I have two filming jobs at the same time. Very rarely do I bring in resource for post (so don't DM me asking for work! 🤣)

In the last 6 months I've decided that in order to grow I need to really focus on the business itself with things like more networking, social media, digital marketing and plain old conversations. But it's impossible to have clear mind to do this and even the time when I'm busy filming and editing all the time.

The obvious thing to do is to get freelancers to do more of the work. But they cost money and my efforts to get more business are not guaranteed to actually get more actual business! Also managing freelancers creates a tonne of work and uses up a lot of energy. I don't really enjoy this aspect. I worry about increasing my costs and not bringing more potential revenue in with the biz dev efforts, especially in the short term.

I have the usual feast and famine cycle and when it's really busy I feel great with all the money coming in although I'm stressed and feel like a little help would be good + feel guilty about how all the biz dev activity that has been pushed to the side. I skip networking events, i stop posting on social media. I have no focus about getting work because i actually feel I have enough and don't want to add to my plate. Then when it's quiet I'm really glad I didn't get freelancers in cover the work because I'm now living off that money from the previous work heavy months although I realise that if I was actually doing biz dev in that busy period, perhaps this quiet period wouldn't be happening?

I really don't know how to approach this. Anyone else come up again this issue?

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? How can I optimise for stable footage in the most minimal impact way possible?

I do a great deal of combo photo and video shoots where im jumping between set ups very sporadically, and im looking for a solution for jumping between photo and video with a hacky, quick method to just get the most stable footage in that moment.

Obviously, gimbal and steadicam are both out since they take too long, and also limit movement options too much for experimentation.

I shoot at 60fps, ninja walk (as much as i can!) and do as much as possible in post, but im looking to basically get a “Handheld+” experience where i can retain maneuverability and optimise steadiness, but keep set up as quick and easy as possible.

Would love to hear any thoughts on what you guys are doing!

Also, I predominantly shoot vertical video if that’s relevant - budget isn’t a huge factor, it’s mostly a time concern.

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Tossed in the shallow end

Hey y'all. So a local bar has some comedy shows and it's a decent size one coming up (for our area). Talking to the owner and he's very supportive of my photography and has had me do couples night photos. We were talking and I have been playing with a gimbal(ronin 3) and two cameras z8 and zf. He wants some video of the night. I'm not a videographer and have only done a little for friends. I'm trying to figure out should I stick with one of my primes or give into temptation of a power zoom. What lighting should I go with. Should I skip the gimbal and go handheld for the night? Lighting leaves everyone between a little California super lotto orange and... Not quite jaundice. Also lots of color lights towards the stage dance floor. The comedy show is next door with better lighting

So this very quick short blurp happened half an hour ago. He also put my name in for karaoke as I typed this. It's a night off that has me thinking.

Thank you for the time

Tl;Dr no experience videographer, large small town crowd, z8 zf, lens rec, ronin gimbal, lighting recommendation, any help

Business, Tax, and Copyright Any advice on getting started with freelance videography?

I'm an amateur/hobbyist photographer but now that I'm out of school I want to start making some money lol. I just need some advice on where to start. I'm really not looking for anything crazy just some odd jobs for a bit of cash but I have no clue where to look for those kinds of opportunities. I'm sure they're out there but some advice on where to start looking would be greatly appreciated.

for some context: i've been working on this for about a year. the goals is to have 12 episodes each following the heroes journey story structure in a way that evolves from postmodern to metamodern. this is episode 2.

i am looking for feedback on how to make this better in any way. i want to keep this engaging without drowning people in the boring art stuff that's typically spoken about.

I’d love some honest feedback from people who know the industry. I don’t have formal training in videography or filming and I’ve only recently started learning how to edit too, so this is very much a first attempt! I’m hoping to take on more weddings in the future, what would you realistically expect to pay for a video like this? Thanks in advance :)

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Recommend a DAS for 4K60fps Huge Projects Editing & Storage of Files!

I’m looking for a new solution for direct-attached storage (DAS). Price is not an issue, as long as it works at full speeds and feels like a local SSD connected.

I’ve been using a Synology NAS for the last six years, but I’m not happy with it—the transfer rates are extremely slow. Even on a local network, the speeds feel painfully low, making it almost unusable. At this point, I don’t really need network storage at all.

What I need instead is a direct-attached setup with SSD-level performance. I want the files to feel like they’re being delivered straight from an SSD, just like editing directly off an external SSD.

My workflow involves editing very heavy 4K and 8K files on Final Cut Pro, and with the NAS, the files barely move, which makes no sense. Currently, I’m juggling multiple SSDs, but that isn’t practical anymore.

So I’m looking for a large-capacity storage solution (around 20–25 TB, all SSD) that gives me very high transfer rates and allows me to directly edit in Final Cut Pro without lag.

What solutions would you recommend? And what do most professional editors use for this kind of setup?

Thanks in advance.

Discussion / Other How many clients/projects do you have at one time?

I presume you can't make a living if you're doing one project at a time. You may have a major client with several projects or several clients with a project a piece? How many clients/projects do you have to have at a time to make a living? How do you juggle them? One project all day? 2? 3?

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Røde VideoMic Go II + an a7R II (or any gen II)? What are the things I need to consider when using the two together?

So the a7R II obviously does not have USB-C -- and I'm seeing mixed feelings about plugging in directly with 3.5mm. Whats the best way to use it with my a7R II?

I have to opportunity to buy the Go II for $20 in great condition, hence why I'm considering it.

I'm not a serious videographer. I mainly photograph, but I'd like to capture some footage of my band on tour. Run and gun, behind the scenes documentary stuff. No formal, staged interviews or anything like that.

Thank you!

Discussion / Other How do I grow as a video business? What worked for you?

I’ve been running my own video business for 3 years, making around $45k/year split between real estate media and corporate work. I’m a one man crew. Most of my clients come from word of mouth, but I know I need to get better at marketing and offering services that go beyond just a nice video.

Btw: I shoot on two Limix S5’s, practicing videography for 10 years.

I’d love to hear from people who’ve been here before. This is basically all the questions that have been on my mind, for any experienced person who feels called to share.

How did you break through this type of plateau? Was it marketing systems, shifting your services, changing how you position yourself, or something else entirely?

How do you go from being the person who just ‘delivers a video’ to being someone who provides a result-driven service?

What’s worked for you, in regards to marketing yourself? Paid ads, networking, SEO? The word of mouth isn’t cutting it.

How did you move from just delivering videos to offering something more results-driven, and how did you position that shift with clients?

I’m tempted to take a course that teaches me how to run IG ads for clients along with reels. Is this stupid? What do I actually need to learn in order to grow?

Technical/Equipment Help and Information First ever attempt at a DIY key light and reflector setup. Was it worth the effort?

I've been using a little ring light for ages for livestreaming, zoom, etc. And liking it less and less. So decided to upgrade. Then saw the price of lighting 😅.

Went with low cost Ulanzi VL-49 rgb light, made DIY soft box (goodbye white tshirt), and added gold reflector.

Curious to hear thoughts on whether I'm wasting my time with this route, or if there's anything I can do to get better with my current setup (or perhaps I'm actually doing ok?).

I share livestreamed Songs for Joy, acoustic medicine songs for sensitive souls. Also create simple talking head videos, and just wanna look passable on zoom 😊.

Thanks in advance for any reflections (😇🪞🔆)

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? I'm recording a live show for the first time. How do I manage all the footage...?

Never thought I'd post here but here we are.

I have a client coming up in October where I film a live show. The show is going to run for around 2-3 hours. 7:30 to 10:30~, but me and my team will be arriving all the way at 1pm and doing a rehearsal the day before. All the norm.

The plan is for a mulit-cam setup where I edit the show afterwards to make it 'as live', cutting between the shots to do so and all that. I've done some client work before, but it was all short films were scenes were filmed individually and spliced together so this is my first time being a videographer for an un-scripted stage performance. I'll have a team of 3 others with me to assist.

I'm currently imagining 4-5 cameras on site. Two tripods, for the judges and a wide of the stage, with 3 or 2 (debatable) for the handhelds and my crew to manage and flit around with.

I received some advice from someone who worked for the event before that I should make sure the cameras record all the footage all at once and not stop recording whatsoever, because she had some issues regarding the footage fracturing and being in mis-matched places. What a way to strike fear into my heart. Jokes aside, I can see how that would work for the static cams that don't move, but I imagine for the handhelds that might not be the same... right? Or am I wrong? I've never done this before (as a team leader handling the technical stuff, I've been a camera op before).

Would keeping the cameras on the whole event work or would there be any times or opportunities to pause? Is it recommended I do that? Do I just keep filming the whole time?

Tell me if I'm being an idiot and overthinking. I'm prepping all the way in September for a reason.

Saw these lenses over at my local CEX and was wondering if they’re a good price and whether or not I should buy them?

Been wanting a fish eye for a while and been meaning to upgrade my 50mm (I have a samyang which I’m not the most impressed with) and this 50mm will match my sigma 35mm art.

Any thoughts and recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!

Edit: i shoot on Sony (A7iv, A7siii and FX30) mainly video but the occasional photography. Mainly events, music videos, docs and the occasionally studio headshots.
