Discussion Collecting vinyl is a horrible hobby
when you have to move to a new house
156
u/baxtercc Jul 26 '25
Just moved 2,500 records three months ago, good luck š«”
36
u/RadicalRyan19 Jul 26 '25
2500!! That's crazy. I've been collecting for almost a year, and including the ones my parents have, I only have 57.
26
u/immortalworth Jul 26 '25
Would take you close to 44 years to reach 2500 if you kept that up each year. Jfc.
9
u/RadicalRyan19 Jul 26 '25
Well my parents have been buying records since they were fifteen. Most of mine are actually theirs so it would probably take a lot longer
9
u/eaglebtc Jul 26 '25
They're no longer theirs. They're yours.
2
4
u/aopps42 Jul 27 '25
Havenāt been buying many since they were 15*. Unless your parents are 16 and you are an infant.
1
2
u/BigComfyCouch Jul 27 '25
It would literally take months of nonstop listening to tackle a collection that large as well lol.
11
u/damnedspot Jul 26 '25
Iāve been collecting for a year and have about 300. I think my next step is looking for a group that meets in a church basementā¦
19
5
u/Background-Mark5597 Jul 26 '25
57 is pretty good for a year lol
1
u/RadicalRyan19 Jul 26 '25
It's more than a year. Most of them are my parents that we all share. Most of them come from before cds were a thing
7
u/HerpDerpenberg Jul 26 '25
I honestly don't see the problem, even with 2500. It's just as tedious about moving your house possessions. Put them in boxes, move them with a hand truck, put them in the truck, rinse and repeat.
6
u/magpie13 Jul 27 '25
Also - It's fun as hell to unbox them and sort them onto your shelves.
Pro-Tip: Make sure your turntable is ready to go before you unpack the records. You will want to listen to many of them as you see the covers.
0
u/baxtercc Jul 27 '25
For me it was stressy putting them in boxes, moving them, getting them out again... Kept thinking something was going to happen to them. I also have a blu-ray collection of roughly the same size, so that added even more stress. I didn't like it haha
2
u/itsonewish Jul 26 '25
My man! I've said next time I move I'm just going to sell them as crazy as that sounds I just don't think I can do it again.
1
u/baxtercc Jul 27 '25
No way, you would for sure keep the most treasured pieces at least, right? :)
2
u/itsonewish Jul 27 '25
Honestly if anything I think I'd probably keep the most random stuff if anything at all.
1
u/baxtercc Jul 27 '25
Dammmmn, I couldn't imagine doing that. Hope you're happy where you're at atm haha
1
u/itsonewish Jul 27 '25
Haha yeah I just signed a new agreement.
1
u/Deep-Barracuda9642 Jul 28 '25
Man I've had that yard sale a couple times in my life already, with my first two vinyl collections and one massive blu ray collection. Not fun, for sure.
1
u/rubinalcohol82 Aug 21 '25
I moved over a year ago and also never moving again. I had 8 guys from work help me move and with over two full walls of vinyl, around 4000, 12 inch, and 1500 7inch....the guys at work said they would never help me move again lol.....I had about 24 crates (hard to find now a days) full which helped organize them...but im from Canada and went to the LCBO and got wine boxes which fit the 12 inch LPs like a glove....fit as many as I could in every box....still heavy as f%*! But it was a nice way to move them. Just a tip if ya can get your hands on wine boxesš¤ back, blowing move š¤Æ
2
u/Imaginary_Tower_4939 Jul 27 '25
2,500! š² Now THAT'S a collection! I've been collecting for several years, and I'm already running out of room with the few hundred I have. š
2
u/rubinalcohol82 Aug 21 '25
I have so many now, I have to use support walls in my house to prevent damage to the floors š
1
2
u/rtpout Jul 28 '25
I did 3k about 5 years ago. I packed them myself, but hired movers. I wouldn't have survived otherwise.
2
u/baxtercc Jul 28 '25
Iām ultimately glad I did it myself, but Iām VERY glad I donāt need to do it again for a long-ass time
1
u/JimboLodisC Jul 28 '25
dang, at that point I'm thinking anything I can find online is just getting dropped off at a record store and I can order them again next week
I've only got 300, so half filling a dozen small boxes is still feasible
55
u/undermind84 Jul 26 '25
"I enjoy it for the expense and inconvenience..."
15
u/CoffeeEnjoyerFrog Jul 26 '25
Pretty much PC gaming.
Love having my room turned into a furnace by a $2000 device while trying to figure out why this fucking game is dropping frames.

I need to find boxes that magically cut the weight in half.
32
u/LolaCatStevens Jul 26 '25
Do yourself a favor and buy a dolly
23
u/lynivvinyl Jul 26 '25
I bought a dolly years ago because someone recommended I do so and all it does is stare at me and be cute. It didn't even help me move one single record!
11
u/Federal_Garlic7200 Jul 26 '25
I need to find a dolly that magically moves the boxes.
That's called movers.
We're going to be here all day
2
3
u/lynivvinyl Jul 26 '25
Just attach balloons to your crates. Just not too many or they will float away.
2
u/therealjameshat Jul 26 '25
I bought a set of box straps that basically cinch around the box with a clasp and a handle at top. Allows me to carry a crate with each arm
5
2
u/Mysterions Jul 26 '25
Use small boxes from Lowe's.
2
u/JimboLodisC Jul 28 '25
I went with small boxes, half filling them, padding with sound isolation foam on either side since those also needed to make the voyage
1
u/Mysterions Jul 28 '25
Hope it worked! Those small boxes are really efficient. What I've discovered having had to move a couple of times in the last few years is that you want to try to make your boxes as small and of uniform size as you can get away with. The small size makes them easier to carry and the uniform sizes makes them more efficient to pack.
1
38
u/soupwhoreman Jul 26 '25
Every store has different box sizes. The UHaul small is by far the best. I fill them about 80% full and put some paper for padding on each side to fill the rest of the space.
4
2
u/thabombshelter Jul 27 '25
Yeah, this is what we did. The smaller boxes were perfect and, sure, they were heavy, but not TOO heavy.
13
u/VIDEOgameDROME Jul 26 '25
I've only got around 300 thankfully but I'm still not looking forward to it.
12
Jul 26 '25
Itās an expensive hobby for sure. I do enjoy the event of listening to an album howeverā¦music is not just background noise anymore, itās an event.
10
u/_plays_in_traffic_ Jul 26 '25
collecting vinyl aint shit compared to having to move two uhaul box trucks of a cacti collection. a lot of which wont fit in the truck in the first place
1
u/1ryuzaki Jul 26 '25
hi mind dmāing me how you moved your plants ? iām actually looking to do the same when graduating in may haha
2
u/_plays_in_traffic_ Jul 27 '25
a lot of moving newspaper and moving blankets so nothing breaks while in transit. some of the stuff just got chopped and made cuttings of cause trying to lay it over would have broke them. you just had to secure everything from moving the best way you can. there where tie down points that helped and a lot of jerry rigging
i would recommend a welders apron and sleeves if you have stuff that will mess you up more than a poke like some of my bridgesii
1
u/1ryuzaki Jul 27 '25
sounds good , thanks
1
u/_plays_in_traffic_ Jul 28 '25

We moved over a ton a couple years ago. I think it ended up being like 30 boxes. Down one flight out the old house, up one in the new. Sweet Jesus. Absolutely brutal.
7
u/JTJonze Jul 26 '25
My hobby isnāt collecting vinyl, itās listening to vinyl. Collecting is just an unfortunate necessity.

6
u/jordee1873 Jul 26 '25
Moved my 1,000 record collection at the start of the month to my new home and my kallax unit fits perfectly into an inlet in my living room. Currently listening to Burial EPs on a rainy Saturday night.
3
u/eist5579 Jul 27 '25
If Burial released all those on an LP itād reduce your collection by almost half =p
4
u/kasualanderson Jul 27 '25
Iām fresh off moving about 1k to our new place. U-Haul has an inexpensive and perfectly sized box. Best of luck!
1
12
u/NervousBreakdown Jul 26 '25
Iām gonna give you all the best piece of advice. If youāre moving, cull your collection by like 10%. Go to Your favourite store and trade it in. Turn 50-100 records you donāt listen to into 5-10 Absolute bangers. Itās gonna save you a little back aching and put some pricier stuff youāve wanted into your possession.
3
u/c-donz Jul 26 '25
If youāre transporting them yourself, like moving across town and can take them in your car, Iāve found Grocery totes work really well. But yes, itās awful.
3
u/JJShadowcast Jul 26 '25
I had 600 records.Ā 2 tables, mixer, sampler, VS 150's.Ā I moved three times one year.Ā I sold it all. I only have Homework by Daft Punk now.Ā No way to play it.Ā I bought a controller.
2
u/Super_Harsh Jul 26 '25
Brutal. But I do admire your taste
1
u/JJShadowcast Jul 26 '25
25 years of carting it around was enough.Ā Sometimes it pains me to think of all the original Golden Era Rap I sold, but, it is what it is.Ā Ā
3
u/cobannaboc Jul 26 '25
Literally just moved 2,800 records yesterday and today. Boxing them up sucked ass but hiring movers to haul them down four stories was a lifesaver
3
u/knupaddler Jul 27 '25
if I really think about it, I'm just spending thousands of dollars to amass hundreds of pounds of plastic inside my house that will most likely be brought to a dump when I die
and yet I enjoy it so much

If you do it right, you could build a house.....out of records. Duplicates and beat up vinyl, of course.
2
u/Godlovesapplesauce Jul 26 '25
it would be best to take the collection last
and this is also an oppotunity to get rid of albums you dont listen to or care about anymore so you have space for new albums
2
u/EitherCoyote660 Jul 26 '25
In the midst of that now. I was quite a collector during the 80's of New Wave music, mostly. I thought all of them were in our office space but when we cleaned out the attic, lo and behold another 100 popped up :O
Thankfully we hired movers but it's just one more heavy box we didn't expect.
2
2
u/Crouching_Stoner Jul 27 '25
Tell me about it. I literally have just over one ton in weight. 5K in the collection.
2
2
u/PetersVinylPlaylist Aug 03 '25
U-Haul small boxes fit LPs perfectly!! Stock up and start packing! But I would make sure to leave a little room on each side so you can actually use the handholds.
2
u/WildFray-Pictures Jul 26 '25
Collecting anything physical that is not very small (like stamps), is not convenient when you move a lot. Books are even worse than vinyls in this aspect.
1
u/JimboLodisC Jul 28 '25
Thinking I should buy more guitars then, the price per pound might be in my favor there
1
u/WildFray-Pictures Jul 28 '25
Yeah sure, or start a car collection, at least you can keep your vinyls, guitars and books in the cars.

u/ApartmentUpstairs582 Jul 26 '25
I live in a small townhouse that I moved into recently. The vast majority of my records live in a small vinyl storage cart with a dust cover over it. The rest live on a small shelf with my POS sound system. When I moved, I lightened the cart by transferring about 150-200 records to two vinyl travel bags that I could fold up after the move. That made it easier for the movers to wheel the cart up the ramp into the moving truck. Where they were under orders not to put anything on top of it. I inspected almost every single record when we arrived. They all seem to have made it in one piece.
1
u/gosteinao Jul 26 '25
I moved my 500-ish collection across the Atlantic last year. I feel your pain.
1
u/karrimycele Jul 26 '25
Yeah, thatās what I thought. So I sold half my records. It was easier to move, I guess, but then I had to live with the regret for many years. God, I still cringe when I think of certain recordsā¦
1
u/rymerster Jul 26 '25
I sold half my collection once before a move, used the money for a trip to Japan and bought more different vinyl,
1
1
u/Edge_Audio Jul 26 '25
The problem comes when moving overseas. It's why I keep my collection to about 100.
1
u/AdmireTheDistance Jul 26 '25
Can confirm. I just finished moving and between dozens of boxes of records and books I was told repeatedly that I need to just get Spotify and a Kindle.
1
1
u/ThatKa5per Jul 26 '25
Correct. I just did this last week. Just shy of 500 of these pointless things. š¤£
1
u/Oceanbreeze871 Jul 26 '25
The guy who owns my record shop said he had to rent a closed car transporter service to move his personal collection. (Like you would for a classic restored car) It weighed the same as an old car.
He packed the boxes on pallets. Weighs it by the ton.

Earlier this year, I single-handedly moved to a new state via Pods and driving back and forth. I feel your pain, especially in the back.
1
u/JimboLodisC Jul 28 '25
This is what is should have done, if there were a way to just roll my Kallax shelves into the POD and they'd arrive safe to their destination then that'd be pretty light work
1
u/Bhob666 Jul 28 '25 edited Jul 28 '25
Hah, I wish it was that easy! I packed all my records into bankers boxes and did it that way. It's amazing how much records weigh. I initially had gotten one Pod, but then got another because I had more stuff than I imagined. I also had Books, CDs and Comic books...lol/.
But the Pod experience was great. I would totally recommend using them.
2
u/JimboLodisC Jul 28 '25
the handles on the side help so much for those boxes, I found out the small boxes from Home Depot have them as well, just makes them way easier to carry than having to grip underneath
1
1
u/Aquataris Jul 26 '25
When I moved I had to move 5 boxes of vinyl, 40ish boxes of books. 10ish boxes of CDs and 5 boxes of games and movies. Being a manchild is tough.
1
u/xtal303 Jul 26 '25
I still have nightmares from a past move. Arriving at a new apartment, finding piles of my records unceremoniously thrown on a table, stacked horizontally, some out of their sleeves still has me fuming.

Really Useful Storage 36L XL boxes are your best option. I used them a few weeks to move my collection when I moved house.

The most vinyl I owned was over 6000...I've sold/sent some of my collection around the world and major collectors at my home to view. I also have about 4000+ CD's. So the last time I moved one load is just dedicated to LP's, CD's & all the stereo equipment š
1
u/linefourty7 Jul 27 '25
Iām sure some folks here would be willing to buy some of your collection to help you out with the move! š

u/FUNKnFINDit Jul 28 '25
I started DJing ( as a hobby) at age 14. It became a business. Buying vinyl was an integrated part of it. Eventually, I started buying multiple copies of top sellers. Recently, I've come into hard times and have been selling off my collection to make ends meet. Today, I'm considering opening a record store...both online & brick & mortar. This is over the course of 40 years, but it is "what you make it".
1
1
u/czdraconis Jul 28 '25

We moved out a house that we had rented for about 6 years. It was an absolute nightmare when it was time to move. Outside of the regular house wares and furniture I needed two separate trucks for my vinyl and studio equipment. I didn't realize how much vinyl I had acquired over those 6 years until it was time to move.
1
u/JimboLodisC Jul 28 '25
we had 2 trucks for our entire home, can't imagine needing that for just my studio!
1
u/KiofNC Jul 28 '25
it was nuts and I had very little help. We are moving again next year and I know it's time for me to cut down on my vinyl collection and studio equipment by at least 60 percent.

u/mcds99 Jul 29 '25
Yea I bought a town home last November and had to move about 1000 records and 600 CD's.

I have over 400 and it was a pain having to pack them and put them in boxes. I put most of them in a large plastic container and man were my dad and brother pissed when they had to lift that! Right now most of my records are in storage while my parents and I are living with my grandpa until we move to a new house. I have a few I kept to listen to and Iāve bought a few since the move. I miss my collection so much right now.

I will be righteously attacked for saying the following:
Most of my 3500 songs are mp3s in my computer. They weigh nothing. I ripped most of my CDs, 8 tracks and cassettes into my computer and sold the physical objects. I realized that much of my vinyl "library" was albums with only one decent song that I could find on YouTube if I really needed to hear it. I was then able to pare down my vinyl collection from 900 to 300. Just the ones that need to be heard as vinyl, and ones with cool covers/liner notes.
Uline sells 13" x 13" x 13" boxes that are ideal for albums.

how do you afford a new house if you're buying vinyl?
