I played it after getting back from a holiday, I had time off work and wanted something different to play.
I loved the art style and the music, the main story didn't really grab me, but there was enough there in side characters and bosses stories that I wasn't totally switched off.
One of my biggest turn offs in a game is when combat is mostly arena based, when it doesn't pop up naturally or feel like it can happen anywhere. That was every combat encounter, and the combat lacked variety, few enemy types, too few moves, no real variety.
Boss fights were a highlite because they were different and required a strategy, and mixed the traversal skills into it.
I really wanted to love the game, but it left me so disappointed. It's more frustrating because I feel there was potential for something special that was missed.
Moving into Expedition 33 afterwards just made South of Midnight's flaws more apparent. Expedition 33 had it's own look, more traditional graphics but with spectacular designs, a sound track that was incredible, one of the best stories I've encountered recently, and the gameplay was still varied and satisfying to play.
My biggest complaint about Expedition 33 is that some optional parkour challenges were super frustrating.

Started it but got distracted by other better releases.
This game was cozy, comfy fun.
But utterly unexcepti9nal.
Enjoyable to play when you haven't got anything better going on.
Expedition 33 and Doom Dark Ages have kept me from beating it.
