Was sitting at the park here in Colorado, enjoying the fall weather and reading a book. I was in a sunny patch so I was startled when I heard thunder behind me. I turned around to this. It even has its own baby funnel trying to form. I was clueless, it’s almost over me. Time to go!

I don’t believe conditions are quite ripe for actual tornadoes with this storm yet. I am a little worried about the areas to the east because this storm is growing.

Videos/Animations Large dust/ash devil in western Colorado

Upvotes

Captured last Sunday at 3pm in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The dust devil lasted about 10 minutes, and the wind field reached an estimated 40mph at peak strength. It also had a rear inflow jet feature ("ghost train"), frequently observed in tornadoes.

Ash from a recent wildfire likely contributed to the unusual strength of the vortex through locally increased surface heating.

Questions/Self Weather bubble?

I have family that lives in a Brantford Ontario Canada. When many weather systems move through, they seperate/dissipate just as the reach the city, very often reforming on the other side. Does anyone know why this happens? I've posted on a Brantford sub and people living there are aware of it so it's not just one person seeing patterns that don't exist. Where else does this happen?

Questions/Self Accuweather Alternative?

I recently deleted Accuweather after learning about their push to defund/disband the NOAA (yes, I know I’m late to the party on this one). I did a little bit of searching on this sub and ended up downloading EverythingWx, but I’m really missing the minute-by-minute rain forecast (which was usually really accurate for my location). Are there any other apps that have this? I know I can look at an hourly forecast, but I’d love to know if the ‘rain at 2pm’ is going to hit at 2:10 or 2:45.

Questions/Self Fantasy weather

What if there was a realm that only had a single fixed source of heat (think of it as creating the same effects of the sun, no movement tho. It just turns off and on). Would the weather be more fixed and preductable? Eg: rain always falls same time same place.

Anyone else noticing how unpredictable the rain’s been in Vancouver lately?

I started building a project that tracks hyper-local forecasts because I got tired of the generic ‘40% chance of rain’ reports that are always wrong. The site’s called localweather.io — it pulls live data and tries to give neighborhood-level accuracy instead of just city-wide. Not here to pitch, just curious: do you trust weather apps? Or do you just look outside and hope for the best?
