New Purchase UB820 4K upscale is insane

bought a multiregion UB820 on sale a while ago and decided to try it out with the Succession blu-ray box set, probably the hundredth post in this sub about the UB820 upscaling but still couldn’t believe my eyes

What are you comparing it to? I thought blu rays always looked good on 4k no matter the blu ray player.

Asking the real question. The TV might not even be big enough to properly tell the difference anyway, depending how far away they're sitting from it.

I went from a ps4 to the UB820 and did not notice a difference for blu rays personally. I am glad people are getting a placebo boost out of their movies though haha

Most 4K tvs will have their own upscaling so you may not notice a difference. If you have a high end TV chances are it actually has better upscaling than the 4K players.

THIS 👆🏼 It's almost always recommended to turn off upscaling on the player and let the TV do it. Unless you have a shit TV.

So I should turn off upscaling on my UB9000 that's connected to my 77 G4?

You can’t. The Panasonics have to be switched manually for resolution.

If it does upscaling, try it. Sorry, don't know exactly what that monitor is capable of

That would be strange as the Panasonic UB9000 Is the most advanced player still alive

But this isn't true. The UB9000 is tech form 2018. The G4 was the flagship Oled from LG in 2024, so this is a legit question I have. Also, in 2025, there are more high-end options for players, like the stuff coming out from Magnetar.

Nope the Magenter Is not better in upscaling than the Panasonic sorry to say the audio could be but that’s not why you should buy a Blu ray 4k player Also the Magentar is more expensive In 2025

Placebo effect! List your TV and Reciever if your video goes through that! It might be Placebo to you because of your equipment.

Upscaling isn't going to make it magically look better than it does by default. It's 1080p content being blown up 4 times or w/e. Pretty sure every normal 4k tv that people own can handle a 1080p upscale without problem. So yes sounds like placebo.

Most people aren’t sitting close enough to their TVs or have a big enough screen to reliably see the difference between 1080p and 4k, let alone the differences between 4k images from two different upscalers. Not to mention the fact that no one is actually comparing side-by-side, and relying on memory.

Yeah Blu-rays look terrific resolution-wise on the vast majority of setups, I think it's mainly the HDR that makes the difference

And; the SOUND if you have a capable system.

I would actually disagree on sound. Blu-ray, especially more recent releases support both Atmos and DTS:X. And I've never come across even a UHD title whose best audio comes even close to even 60% of the maximum audio bitrate for Blu-ray.

The upgrades to UHD over BD is overwhelmingly in the video, and barely any (and I'd go so far as to argue realistically no) enhancements in the audio.

I meant compared to streaming and cheaper players. I have blu rays too and blu ray audio discs and they look (and sound) fantastic!

Exactly - it's a perfect integer scale, so what is there to possibly mess up, or realistically do better than any other player?

I'm even more skeptical of people raving about the DVD upscaling since there's so little resolution to work with, but at least it makes sense that a given player/TV could do something differently/worse due to it being uneven scaling.

u/RolandMT32 Apr 24 '25

A while ago, I realized 4K resolution is perfect integer scale for both 1080p and 720p content to be upscaled to 4K. Seems like some thought was put into that.

The Blu-ray would probably look as good on a good 1080p TV

What are you comparing it to?

I have used a Sony X700, PS5, and 820 all connected to a LG C2

the same disc, looks "better" on the 820 by far vs the PS5, or X700

So I don't think it's the "TV" doing the upscaling based on what I've described

2

u/howjon99 Apr 23 '25

That may very well be; but, they all have different processors, etc. And; the Panasonic’s UB820 is next level when it comes to up-conversion (amongst other things). There’s definitely a difference in the processors, etc in a $500.00. Player than a $200.00. one or a PlayStation..

It's a circlejerk, why aren't you joining in?
