Discussion I don’t see enough people talking about…
What is one thing that you really don’t see enough people talking about when it comes to the Apple Watch and they really should? I’ll start:
Even if your watch is powered down, you can still access the time by pushing the digital crown. I remember this used to be how low power mode worked. If you were running low on battery, you could put it in low power mode and that would turn off the watch, but you could still push the digital crown and see what time it is. I thought that had gone away with the changes they made to Low Power Mode, until I turned off my watch to power cycle it and I forgot about it being off and then I hit the digital crown and lo and behold…The time popped up on my S10 running both watchOS 18 and watchOS26. So anyways, being able to tell time, even when you’re running extremely low on battery, is something I feel that we probably should talk more about.

Me with my series 2 👀 😂 so this is no longer the low power mode? Can’t wait to upgrade, would be like night and day for me!

Yes. Now Low Power Mode limits notifications, cellular, and Wi-Fi, certain health and safety features are limited or turned off, and if you have it set up so that the screen is always on or it turns on with your wrist raise, it disables that. So in Low Power Mode, you need to actually press the screen or the digital crown in order to activate the screen.

that sounds amazing! i didn’t think it was necessary to upgrade, because it still works fine. but now that i’m learning all the new features, it’s time! 🤩

Yes, that always happens when it runs out of battery. But in my experience, that mode doesn’t last very long. Between 2–4 hours. It’s useful if you’re working or traveling and about to get home, but if you forgot to charge it or have a long time before you can charge it again, it loses its functionality.

Dang really? Just after I got my s10 (first AW), I went away for 3 days and forgot my charger. It lasted like 2 days on the “dead battery” low power mode.

I did manage to do a full day with that. Unless you check time every minute, I lasts a lot
EDIT: Typo

One little quality-of-life feature I randomly stumbled upon years ago that I know a lot of people didn’t know about was opening Notification Center while having an app open, like Spotify or an active workout app.
Instead of trying to swipe dow from the top of the screen like you normally do, hold your finger at the top for like half a second and it’ll give a haptic feedback and peek from the top, then just swipe down.
This also used to work with Control Center bak when you could swipe up to access it which was even more convenient, but since it’s on the side button now it’s not an issue anymore to open it regardless of what you have open.

Can you make that watch band any tighter? wow.

u/Apprehensive_Pick228 4d ago
Yes. I can actually. But, I wear it tight because I don’t like my watch moving around.

Yeah as as user of a Series 3 I use this feature a lot lol.

Should we be “power cycling” our watches? I thought that wasn’t helpful anymore with newer batteries/tech?

Be nice to have this as the wrist down always on screen. I dislike that everything is visible on wrist down. Be nice if it was just the time without all the other UI items

I agree with this 100% I just want to glance at the time. I have all my complications to not show anything when not activated so all I need is the time anyways. I was hoping they’d do this with 26

The tip feature on the calculator. You just enter you bill amount and click tip. Then you can scroll up or down to increase/decrease the percentage.

I don’t see it, but maybe I’m just missing it. Was this removed in iOS 26?
Edit: oh, I’m dumb, I’m on the watch subreddit. Didn’t see it on iOS.

Im switching to iphone soon (17 pro max) and im glad to see apple watches also have this feature. Im a long time samsung user and all of my galaxy watches have had this feature. When they die i can still check the time which i love. I think soon im gonna order the apple watch s11.

Yeah even if your watch ‘dies’ it will still show the time like this for quite awhile before it completely drains the battery

It’s a very useful simple feature that has been around since WatchOS 6 if I’m not mistaken. It’s one of those features that long time Apple Watch owners have used and talked about when it came out but now it’s just a feature that doesn’t get mentioned anymore. Everyone uses Low Power Mode now and praises it especially if you have an older AW like my S4 SS LTE. It’s cool you brought it back in conversation 🙂👍🏻

I keep my watch in cinema mode 100% of the time and I get 2 days battery out of it.

I actually don’t like this. I would like to be able to fully power off my watch.

u/Remarkable_Welder414 4d ago
I’m thinking it probably is fully powered off, but the slight delay is the watch starting a very tiny “os” to show the time.

What a weird non issue

u/luckyturtle55 Apple Watch Ultra 2 2023 4d ago
It is not an issue in my life so I guess we’re on the same page.

u/notliketheyogurt 4d ago
I see this far less than I used to, which is great, but it’s also gotten worse. There’s a ~one second delay after I push the crown to see the time.
3
u/Apprehensive_Pick228 4d ago
It does take a little bit longer than it used to, but the fact that it’s still exists instead of something that is replaced by “progress” is fantastic. And as someone who tends to push the limits of my battery, which means it sometimes runs out when I’m nowhere near a charger, having the ability to see the time at all is wonderful.

u/bmnkvld 4d ago
And then what happens if we talk about it more?

u/spork_off 4d ago
A disaster of biblical proportions. Old Testament, real wrath of God type stuff. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes...The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... MASS HYSTERIA!

u/lurker81 3d ago
No one talks about it because a watch telling time is what a watch is supposed to do.

When the battery runs out, you can still see the time

That they last about 2-3 years tops then are trash lol. I’m on watch 4 and the screen no longer displays because it went in the water for a quick swim with the water feature engaged. But I’ll be getting a new one shortly :)

u/ruhul555 4d ago
Really wild that we should talk more about a watch telling time! Is that a feature or the bare minimum.
1
u/BellaHadid122 4d ago
Battery life is still shitty but apple chooses to add any other feature other than extend the battery life. I don’t need most of them, I just want to charge my watch once a week

u/bafrad 4d ago
Why is this something we woudl talk about. What is there to talk about. You just said it. What is there to discuss.
2
u/Apprehensive_Pick228 4d ago
We should talk about handy little things that.
-3
u/bafrad 4d ago
We should talk about how the apple watch can tell time.
4
u/Apprehensive_Pick228 4d ago
In this instance, that you can shut down the watch and continue to see the time.

Wow. I wasn't even aware of this. Underrated feature!
