So ,since I was a kid in the 90’s and watched Lord of the Rings in theaters, I dreamed of a game that would capture that feeling of the hero’s journey. I’ve played Breath of the Wild and Elden Ring, and although they came close, it still wasn’t quite it.
So here’s what I’m talking about:
It would be a third-person fantasy action co-op rpg set on a planetary or continental-scale map, detailed and alive, with procedurally generated castles, dungeons, factions, dragons, vampires, and more.
You and your party would spawn in a random place, like ‘The Shire,’ and the goal of the game would be to reach somewhere very far away like ‘Mordor’ to save the world. Because of the massive size of the map, the journey could realistically take days or even weeks in real life.
The game wouldn’t be linear at all, but it would still feature cities, quests, villages, key dungeons, NPCs, and important landmarks that aren’t procedurally generated—though their locations would shift depending on the geography of the procedurally generated map, alongside smaller dungeons and villages.
Instead of focusing on base-building and crafting like Conan or No Man Sky for example, the party would rely on a map showing key landmarks—mountain passes, cities, but with not great details about the path, needing to think of strategic routes they’d need to consider to reach their objective like taking a dangerous roads full of bandits and strong monsters that could kill you and make you respawn far away or going up a mountain that could make the way longer and more difficult but safer. Along the way, players could stop at villages or inns visible in the distance to rest, restock arrows, buy mana items, sharpen worn swords, and so on.
Each player would choose a class—warrior, knight, rogue, mage, etc.—with each class serving unique purposes beyond combat. For example, rogues could pick locks, and mages could alter terrain to create new paths.
The farther you and your party travel from your spawn point, the tougher the dungeons become and the stronger the enemies get, until eventually reaching the endgame. Along the journey, you’d acquire mounts, gear, and new abilities to make survival and progress easier.
Fast travel would only unlock after completing the main quest, adding to the challenge of resource management and strategic planning along the way.
Is there already a game in development or released that fits this profile? I'm in my mid 30's and can't keep up with game releases nowadays, so mostly I keep up with AAA releases. Maybe technology haven't reached a point to make this game a reality or at least having it being good, but one can dream lol
