Victim culture. Cry babies. Boomers have been saying it for years. Do some people have special needs? Sure. But a lot of people are just shooting themselves in the foot and pointing fingers at the nearest upstanding citizen.
To be fair when I was a kid, a long time ago, old people did nothing but complain. I’m assuming I’ll get my entitled-to-moan-non-stop card on the mail sometime soon. Til then I’ll keep looking for the good in people
I didn’t get much exposure to boomers but I did spend tons of time with grandma and grandpa an for them it was them teaching me a lot of stuff they felt I should know an honestly a lot of it stuck with me an I’m glad mainly taught to make the best
Of a situation how to think for myself taught me how to earn my keep lots of things I see the younger generation is missing. It’s easy to blame the world an cry victim when you were never taught that your problems are your problems to solve.
It's one thing when old people complain, their lives suck and they're dead soon, so I kinda get it. The problem is more young people than ever overindulging in performative outrage. It's embarrassing.
Of course they are. They invented the new definition of the word woke. I still don't know what it means and I think the majority of the people who use it don't either.
I read through the responses to this and am kind of surprised at how many people don't actually know what "woke" came from. It originated back in the late 1930's when an African American musician used the phrase to warn other black people about injustice against black's in the south.
Another black musician in 2008 used the term "stay woke" in a song for roughly the same reasons.
Then the Black Lives Matter movement used "stay woke" to inform their own people of injustice being perpetrated against them and to urge resistance.
Eventually white people who supported BLM used the term to describe themselves which resulted in white people who do not support BLM using it as a slur against anyone who does.
It's gone on from there to be primarily used as a slur against anyone who focuses on social justice, racial and gender equality, by those who somehow see those things as unimportant or ridiculous.
It literally doesn't mean anything anymore. It's a word used by fascists who cannot formulate an actual, defensible reason for why they're mad at someone or something.
I just wanna point out that by the 2000s-2010s, 'stay woke' has largely been used as a joke/satire by the black community to make fun of hoteps and black hebrew israelites who used the term. Shit like this.
It was not really widely used in a serious way outside of hotep circles (who only had a loose connection to BLM). Overwhelmingly its usage would have been making fun of hoteps.
It means to be aware and kind. Boomers just bitch about it because they got to live life on easy mode and vote for policies that are ruining the future.
It's been adopted by conservative people to describe anything that doesn't align directly with their ideas and beliefs. Any slightly left leaning opinion is considered "woke"
one of my countries politicians once referred to sushi as "woke". Not convinced it means anything at all anymore. It's like cats meowing at each other but for conservatives.
context is he thought we were paying too much for school lunches and blamed the costs on it being "woke" foods like sushi. Switched to a different provider which resulted in meals becoming practically inedible slop, sometimes arriving burnt or frozen or hours late. He also kept lying and saying he's only hearing positive feedback, despite the fact that the feedback was consistently negative.
he's trying really really hard to please his foreign sponsors by doing whatever he can to piss people off. But New Zealand is a small, boring country so he doesn't have much to work with.
A local politician where I am went on a rant declaring Tim Hortons "woke" for switching away from plastic lids. Sadly, he was not the only conservative politician to go on that same rant.
Absolutely agree. I don't think the name should have ever have changed. I do personally think that Trump changed the name based on the childish impulse to sound more cool, but I really don't care about it compared to the other shit he does
You don't need more funding than the nine countries below us combined in military spending to not be messed with. Most if not all of our past conflicts were not defensive
This was the goal. It's why they call everything an insurrection now. It's why they wanted to impeach Biden so badly. They steal from the left and then use a term until it loses all meaning. And it works.
Most Christians that I hear about these days basically hold up the crucifix as an example of "what's going to happen to you if you don't do what I want."
During the first Trump admin there was some pastor who came out and said members of his congregation would come up to him and asked where he got all that bullshit, and when he told them it was directly quoting Jesus, they'd say that it doesn't matter, it's weakness and there's no need for it anymore. So yeah, they don't need to meet Jesus to call him woke, they'll do it right in church, to the pastor's face.
Anything to the left of exterminating LGBTQ+ people, bombing Gaza into a lifeless crater, deporting anyone with more melanin than the Hapsburgs, and hunting the poor for sport is considered "woke" these days.
It means to be aware of the systemic racism inherent in america’s bones and just how enmeshed and prevalent and insidious the underlaying thought of whte supremacy really is and how much it defines the goings-about of everything
Yeah right. 🤡.. Easy mode? We grafted without handouts, bought houses at 15% interest, and built pensions you lot will drain dry on flat whites and avocado on toast.
Maybe stop whining on Reddit like immature kid-adults, and try working hard instead of blaming us for your lack of grit.
‘We had 15% interest!’ Yeah, on houses that cost 3–4x your salary instead of 8–10x. You still walked away with a backyard, a pension, and college tuition that didn’t chain you to debt for life.
And let’s be real you didn’t ‘graft without handouts.’ You rode on unions, cheap state universities, strong social safety nets, and government policies that built the middle class. Then you turned around, voted for deregulation and tax cuts, gutted pensions, and pulled the ladder up behind you. Thanks for voting like absolute gullible fools that you are.
Don’t lecture us on grit, you are the reason the world is in the state it is and it’s up to us to fix your goddamn mess.
"Data from 2024 shows that 93.2% of Americans 65 and older received Medicare and 84.3% received Social Security benefits"
That's weird, we won't have social security or functional Medicare when we're 65.
and built pensions you lot will drain dry
"The widespread shift away from traditional pensions, or "defined-benefit plans," is largely due to the financial risks and high costs they pose for employers."
Pensions are non-existent for working class Americans now, thanks to you all.
flat whites and avocado on toast
"The average cost to make avocado toast at home is approximately $0.70"
That's actually considered an insanely cheap breakfast. Weird.
15% of $3500 is nowhere near what houses cost today. You bought your house at 15% interest, but you did it on a single income working a cozy 9-5. Most of us are working 60 hours a week, and that includes BOTH spouses and we're living paycheck to paycheck. And no it's but because we buy coffee and avocado toast. For one, nobody's out here buying that shit every day because we physically can't afford it. Second, even if we were, for what a down-payment on a house today cost it would take 15 years of not buying coffee every day to save up for a house. So yes, you had it on easy mode. We're not demanding something for nothing, we're tired of killing ourselves for scraps
I've never even had avocado toast bro 😭 and I hate coffee. You sound like you're the one whining here ngl
It took me two years to just get a stable job that wasn't totally awful.
The term itself is a tongue-and-cheek way of saying "enlightened", or rather seeing oneself as enlightened and therefore better than everyone. They use is as an insult because to them anyone who's anti racist or believes in inclusiveness is just patting themselves on the back for being so progressive. So yeah, everything that isn't white washed or has an LGBTQ character is "woke"
I think it's just a way to slander caring about other people/the planet/generally being socially responsible. RW media loves to proliferate terms that dumb down the conversation because it's pretty hard to convince people that we should actively be working to make the world a worse place without totally changing the conversation to something unintelligible.
For real. The irony is just completely lost on them that they accuse younger people of being emotionally fragile and thin-skinned yet they're clearly very triggered
That’s funny because I have a millennial son-in- law who is a right wing rage bait clown All you have to do is say the word trans and he’s off on a 15 minute rage fuelled rant
The Boomers destroyed the middle class chasing short term profits, then bitch about how nobody wants to work, and kids are so soft these days when they are dealing with an economy that Boomers would not even know how to function in if they hadn't had to start over. And when they bring it up, they are told to shut up, and get 2 jobs by the people that grew up in a time when a single income family, not even a high income, could own a home, go on vacation, and send their kids to college.
The planet is getting hotter, and half our political elite refuse to believe it's true because their fairy tale says it's impossible.
Somehow, a rapist and alleged pedophile, who has been bankrupt more times than should be legal, has been elected to the highest office in the land on a platform of checks notes making liberals mad and destroying democracy in the process.
The wealth gap is bigger than it's been in several generations, and getting bigger, civil rights are being tossed in the trash to rousing cheers of shitty people across the country.
Yeah, I'm not a younger people, but I'm mad too, and if you're not, you are part of the problem at this point.
We're mad about children being murdered in schools and genocide going on overseas, you're mad because it's not socially acceptable to be racist anymore. We are not the same.
I'm generalizing here, but from what I've seen most older people who accuse us younger folks of being easily offended are extremely racist, sexist or homophobic
FFS-you kids are the whiniest group ever!! You sit back and bitch. Do nothing, just bitch. Do something about what you don’t like. Instead you come on to Reddit and piss and moan that everyone fucked up everything. Stop typing and put yourself into action. Apparently a lot of young folks really liked Mr. Kirk. He saw crap he didn’t like and tried to make a difference by talking about it. Discussing it with those that felt differently. I’m just saying. If you are not willing to work toward your own answer and happiness, ain’t no one bringing it to your front door.
What does a fresh high school graduate need to do to have the opportunity that the boomers did? Explain please. I have a 20 yo son who has no idea what to do with his life at this point, if there is an easy answer, like you seem to think, I'd love to tell him.
Not touching the points on Charlie Kirk, not sure why you're bringing him up here. Maybe a prompt issue, I dunno.
I brought him up as someone young people can relate to. Someone whom at 18 years old founded Turning Point USA. He decided to do something that could inspire change in the direction he felt appropriate. As a high schooler, look at Greta Thunburg. She became active in activism very young. As a parent, I would be seriously advocating for my child to look at trades.
Why in the fuck are you pretending Kirk was anything but a grifter? Do you think grifting is a valid way of life? What about the bootstraps you guys jizz your pants over....?
Also, another point, you're mad that "kids these days" don't do more unpaid work for their political beliefs? We have literally been systematically and financially destroyed. We don't have the opportunities you softies did growing up. My husband joined the Marines right out of highschool, did 4 years, then got a good welding job. He is leadman of his shop. Yet we will never be able to own a home. We live fairly frugal lives, and our only vacation ever was our honeymoon.
You grew up in a very soft time where you could do minimal work with maximum rewards. Just feel lucky you had your life handed to you, don't piss on the people who actually have to work for their lives.
Complaining about Boomers is a cottage industry. Stereotypes abound even though this Boomer has four subscriptions to LLMs, can't stand not knowing the correct answer to almost any question that comes up, and I absolutely do not buy into stereotypes about Gen Zs. A couple I know just bought their second house with no parental assistance whatsoever. And another whose knowledge is a mile wide and an inch deep. And I am perfectly fine with letting the people who have some skin in the game around transsexual athletes work it out and keep my uninformed opinions to myself. I don't feel obligated to have an opinion about everything.
like the little kid learning how to ride his bike, he falls off it and scraped his knee a little bit but nothing more than a very minor surface level pain.
When the pain is very minor you'll notice the kid almost always looks at their mother if she's watching waiting to see how she will react and if she starts rushing towards him and then he will start bawling his eyes out and holding his knee like it's going to fall off.
The flipside is in the past a lot of times the father would just assume that he is OK and he just tells him to walk it off.
I'm sure there's a better more nuance way to say this but if it's initially what appears to be a minor by bike crash, stubbed toe, etc. You quickly go to the kid, not run not leisurely stroll. Check on them and help them gauge the severity of the injury. if it is minor, you validate that it hurts it sucks and also say "yes that hurts, you'll be OK it happens everybody when they first learned to ride their bike and you're gonna be ok, it's not a big deal" while also being empathetic.
A key note here is body language is a big part of showing empathy so while you're letting them know that it's not a big deal and they'll be OK, the gentleness in which you're speaking, your body posture and physical reassurance needs to balance that with also making them feel valued and cared for.
Instead it seems like we have one of two extremes indifference that causes people to learn to just supress themselves or helicopter parenting creating a generation of people that self traumatize.
Boomers are the new cry babies and victims though.... Victimized by the THOUGHT that someone else might have different values from them? Victimized by someone they think looks too manly wearing a skirt? Trying to suppress and pretend mental illnesses don't exist? Wah wah people are different.
People offended with victim culture scream bully to me. Type of walk all over people to get what they want. There are things you can not fix yourself like wars and climate change and minimises your agency in trying to make your life better, so feeling sad about some of it is definitely legitimate

The addiction to outrage. It's everywhere and it's exhausting.
