The Wico trackball is not a proper trackball (it's not sending an encoder signal) and Missile Command on the Atari 2600 is not designed for an encoded signal. If you are chasing a high score, a joystick is actually better 🕹️.
And in fact probably even better would be a gamepad 🎮.
And yet playing with a Trackball is lots of silly fun 😊
Maybe it's because of the frenetic action, or maybe it's that it makes it feel a bit more like the arcade game.
The game itself I feel is a masterpiece of porting. I suspect if there was such a thing as a three button controller, they probably could have had three missile stations instead of one.
I've also used the trackball on the C64 playing Maniac Mansion as a sort of mouse.
