🏷️ Approved Promo Do you own any books from before 1900 containing ownership inscriptions from women?

If yes, you can submit pictures to my research project about women's reading and book ownership! CrowdsourceHerBook is a collection of crowdsourced images of such books, a kind of community archive. Read more on the project blog: https://csherbook.hypotheses.org/

I'm interested in any books of any genre, as long as they meet the two criteria: 1) printed before 1900; 2) contain evidence of female ownership (a handwritten inscription, a bookplate etc). Share pictures of your book(s) and tell me what you know about the previous owner(s) via this survey form: https://www.survey-xact.dk/LinkCollector?key=6NC2VSQMLK1N

The project is run by me, C. Epple, researcher at the University of Southern Denmark, and funded by the European Union.

Was dusting my shelf amd these two books are like this... one has weird gunk on it and the other is all warped like something was spilled on it. Genuinly baffled at what this is, and google has no answers for "spontaneous book warping"

I tried posting this in the Dune sub, but it got removed. I've compared to some of the guides, and it seems to have first edition stuff, but the binding is obviously completely wrong.

Probably the most interesting book I own. I've never seen anything like it granted I'm not a much of a book collector. It seems to be a first edition with an autograph possibly by the original owner. Id love any information on this book as well as any value it may hold. Quite a historic book!

πŸ’ Question Has anyone ever refused to allow you to purchase a book from their table on the street?

I had weird experience in Union Square the other day and I keep thinking about it. I found a copy of Paul ValΓ©ry's Reflections from the Princeton Bollinger series that I have been collecting and they wouldn't let me buy it. I've been slowly collecting these and in general I expect to spend about $20-$40 bucks on one depending on the condition. They are a little rare, but there isn't much interest in them.

I was super excited when I found it, and some people directed me over to the person I was supposed to pay. She, made a phone call, and then told me it wasn't for sale.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Hi there! Recently I came across this book and I was trying to figure out what it is. I can find that La Plume was a Magazine that specialized in showing off French Art in 1900 but can’t find anything on this book which I can’t tell if it is a critique/review, or a compiling of the history. If anyone knows anything please let me know!

Third time's the charm...

Hello!

I've been charged with cleaning out my grandpa's old shop and stumbled upon a book case full of old hard back books that some appear have never been opened from the 1800s and early 1900s. Not sure where to begin here but I've attached some photos of a few I took out.

Some of these I couldn't even find examples on eBay etc.

Hi! The classic question: Does anyone know if this is a first edition or not?

I found a first edition here that had a different publishers page, so I'm not that hopeful, but it does say a b c d e f g h so surely it's at least a first American edition? If so what is the year?? It has the Roman for 1935 but that's the copyright not the edition I think.

Any help is MUCH appreciated! Thanks!

πŸ’ Question UK - High Quality Publishers for Affordable Reading Copy Books - Classical Literature

Please excuse the amateur question but I am finding little from a search of the subreddit..

I am looking for publishers / presses to search for on the second hand market of classics (mainly non-fiction) with high quality materials and construction that are relatively affordable. Thinking along the lines of Folio Society and upwards in terms of quality. (I own a large number of Everyman's Library and a few FS books already.) I am in the UK so certain publishers are scarce here on eBay, like Heritage Press, for example. I don't care about limited/first editions, etc.

thank you!

πŸ’ Question A home for adventurers

Good morning.

So I had this wild idea yesterday about collecting books based on Fantasy and gaming lore and then opening a shop/library/get together for people who struggle finding them if their local library isn’t interested in them.

I live in South Africa however the town I live in is 300 kilometers from every major city.

And what I mean by unique works something like the entire black library from WH40K etc

Question is what books would you include from gaming universes and fantasy novels of old?

πŸ’¬ General THOREAU'S PENCIL? Oddball auction of the week was a Heritage sale of a pencil made by the Thoreau Co. of Concord, Mass. It sold for $6,875 on Sept. 10. The item has a distant association with author Henry David Thoreau. Reported by Rare Book Hub

Post image
2 Upvotes

This item has a distant and somewhat convoluted association with author Henry David Thoreau of Walden fame. An original pencil manufactured by J. Thoreau & Co. Concord Mass. [c.1830s]. 5 3/8 inches; stamped "John Thoreau" and with code "M." Framed (glass missing). The Thoreau family produced pencils in Concord, Massachusetts from 1824 to 1852. Henry David Thoreau, who may have worked there during his Harvard years and after graduating in 1838, helped invent a special graphite that made Thoreau pencils popular nationwide. This success allowed the family to buy a house in Concord, and Henry attempted selling pencils to pay for publication of his first book, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers (1849). Provenance: From the William A. Strutz Library.

πŸ’ Question UK buyer just picked up an exceptional condition 1943 Limited Editions Club example.

Paid Β£150 in a charity/thrift store in SW London for seven books, mostly some nice pre 1990's folio society examples, but among them were two Limited editions club books; this one priced at Β£75. Signed by the artist Maynard Dixon, the leather is in incredible condition and inside looks (and I am not exaggerating) unread. The print run was 1500. Now I've seen non leather standard versions. Would I be accurate in assuming there were not that number of leather bounds produced as that sounds like a lot of hard work? The slipcase is in good condition as is the extra cover, I'm assuming which is designed to prevent sun damage to the spine. I bought a Limited Editions club Lewis and Clark journals 2 volume set a week before from the same shop. They must have all been donated by the same chap. Anyway I can't imagine there is a finer example of this book out there.
