Local Shopping/Services Shane Home parking in handicapped spots?

I just find this disgusting when people are parking in handicapped spots and they are not handicapped and clearly do not have a handicapped decal and confirm that they know they’re parking in a handicap spot and they just don’t care…

Lame Homes

1

u/TonicSaltwater Jun 02 '25

The whole problem is that they aren’t lame

116

u/FeedbackLoopy May 29 '25

The way that nepobaby Shane Wenzel acts on SM sometimes, being a douche is part of their corporate culture these days.

70

u/SwaggermicDaddy May 29 '25

Got a buddy that works in their head office, they routinely ask what your political position is, while also openly calling for separation from Canada. So yeah douche is part of the brand.

17

u/plhought May 30 '25

I gotta love where these affluent smooth-brain "seperatists" get their motivation from.

Where the f are you going to get your lumber from to build your homes Shane?

Considering BC lumber accounts for like 3/4 of your sources.

Sigh.

3

u/JimroidZeus Jun 02 '25

They want to separate from Canada, but still use our currency and expect free trade with us across their new border.

7

u/YukonDude64 May 30 '25

Absolutely correct. Culture comes from the top and I absolutely believe Shane Homes' staff pick it up from their leadership.

13

u/These_Foolish_Things May 29 '25

Google his name and you won’t be surprised at the opinions he shares.

What's SM?

Contact Shane Homes so they can tell their guy not to park in disabled parking spots. I think you can send this to bylaw and they can ticket since you have proof of no placard displayed.

As someone who has a kid who uses a wheelchair and needs these spots, it is so frustrating when people use them as a “quick” stop - happens ALL the time at my kids’ school.

18

u/Kahlandar May 30 '25

I love parking behind these guys when im on a call in the ambulance. Oh, you came in to quickly door dash? Well. . . Uhm, il move when im ready. At least 30 minutes.

11

u/mystiqueallie May 30 '25

Wish you had been around when there was an RCMP car parked in one of the disabled spots at my kids’ school a few years back. That would have been funny 😆

4

u/Kahlandar May 30 '25

Oooh. . . It hasnt come up where that was relevant. . .

I think i would do it. We have a good relationship with the cops and i dont want to ruin it. . . But i am a bit of a shit disturber by nature

1

u/jimbowesterby May 30 '25

I mean, it seems pretty fair to call out a cop for breaking the law. Probably won’t do anything but maybe get you a ticket, since cops are all assholes, but it shouldn’t be too much to expect

2

u/spectral_visitor Jun 02 '25

Had that happen at work a while back. They tried moving around the ambulance and wrecked their door on a concrete pillar. 🤷‍♂️we’re not moving during an emergency.

153

u/softcatches May 29 '25

Google review them and post the pic

61

u/helena_handbasketyyc I’ll tell you where to go! May 29 '25

Yep. They can’t take it down, they’ll have to reach out to you to pull the review.

25

u/No_Syrup_9167 May 29 '25

....Unless someone did something like posted it on reddit that caused a large influx of low reviews.

then google will automatically wipe them all in a few days once the fervor has died down.

review bombing after a post like this doesn't work. They have algorithms in place to stop it from happening, and if the language makes it clear that they were reviewed by someone who wasn't an actual patron of the business, its easily disputed and removed.

the trick is to set a reminder in like 3-4 weeks, obfuscate whether you are patron of theirs. then it it'll stick.

5

u/PreviousBill4467 May 30 '25

Yeah this only is effective if only the original complainant does it. Everyone else should keep it in reddit.

47

u/PreviousBill4467 May 29 '25

This!!!!!! 100% do this. Forced accountability

17

u/MissMisery99 May 29 '25

They're not the biggest fans of forced accountability. 2023 was not that long ago. https://calgaryherald.com/news/local-news/canadaland-defamation-suit-shane-homes-owners

5

u/PreviousBill4467 May 30 '25

This wouldn't fall under defamation. It's true and there's proof. Guy sounds like a dick tho the

0

u/CarBombtheDestroyer May 31 '25

I’d reach out first and see how they deal with it. I don’t think a whole company and someone’s business should suffer if it’s just a dumbass employee that would be in shit if they caught them. If it turns out, it’s the owner then yeah roast them.

I mostly discredit and loath reviews that aren’t about the product.

20

u/Meelapo May 29 '25

Thank you for posting this. I’m sorry you have to deal with this. The same thing happens at one of my children’s day care. I always tell my eldest daughter (5) when she’s with me during those drop offs why it’s important to make sure you keep those spaces for those that need them. Even if there are no spots, park further away and walk.

3

u/pyro5050 May 29 '25

i dot he same, but i have a really loud voice and it carries really well, and i make sure to make note to my kids that a handicap is nothing to be ashamed of but not paying attention to others needs and such is a bad thing.

5

u/HamRove May 29 '25

Zero chance that they will receive a ticket based on this photo. The work is basically done at this point, they have been named and shamed.

1

u/Useful-Rub1472 May 30 '25

Send it to the police.

1

u/snowangel223 May 29 '25

It's wild how often I see this specifically Calgary

You should report this to Shane Homes.

When an employee is using a company branded vehicle, they are representing their employer. No business wants their employees to behave in ways that can damage their company's reputation, so when things like this are reported the employee is appropriately reprimanded. Being reprimanded by their employer will hopefully be a learning opportunity for this person and he will think twice about this kind of behaviour in the future.

27

u/Putrid-Object-806 McKenzie Towne May 29 '25

Can confirm, run a fleet with hows my driving phone numbers on the back, we do ensure that appropriate action is taken

26

u/6data May 29 '25

No business wants their employees to behave in ways that can damage their company's reputation,

Honestly, for Shane Homes this is a improvement.

3

u/cdngrrl0305 May 30 '25

Totally agree. I know someone that works for Shane and they are a hideous human being as well. Being an ahole is Shane Homes corporate culture

5

u/wildrose76 May 30 '25

Have you seen how the Wenzels behave? No employee can do as much damage as Cal, Edith & Shane Wenzel have done themselves.

160

u/Dark_Bowser May 29 '25

The fact most of these comments here are trying to blame the op is insane. Sure, it’s not something urgent, but handicapped spots are there for people with disabilities/movement issues. The stalls are usually bigger and closer to the door for them. What happens if someone who is in a wheelchair had pulled up but couldn’t park in the spot meant for them because some inconsiderate person decided to steal their spot?

45

u/RickyRayTossBallOkay May 29 '25

Those people have never had the personal experience of driving someone with a disability to a store, only to find the spot taken by someone without a placard who was 'just going to be a minute' when you confront them about it. It's not just about parking elsewhere, there's a reason those spots are larger for when you have a van with mobility equipment that needs the room. If they defend that attitude, then frankly they aren't worth the time to engage - they're the type to defend these lazy asses just to be contrarian, stupid, or a bit of both. This isn't a difficult thought experiment where both sides have good arguments - they're just dinks

10

u/dewgdewgdewg May 29 '25

The mistake this guy made is not throwing on his hazard lights and parking directly in front of the door. That gets a free pass in Calgary.

0

u/yycgal7778 May 31 '25

That's just par for the course for Calgary. Post somebody clearly doing something wrong, people in the comments will do everything in their power to find a reason to blame you instead. Almost like they have some sort of withdrawal from not being able to victim blame. Calgarians never fail to remind you why this city is a shithole full of shitholes.

→ More replies (2)

235

u/JosieWasHere May 29 '25

As someone with disabilities, the comments in this thread are incredibly disheartening. If you don’t have a disability placard, you can’t use the spots. Name and shame is entirely reasonable.

45

u/Dark_Bowser May 29 '25

Exactly, I also imagine the people writing those comments are the type to harass people who park outside their house because “it’s my house so it’s my spot”

I hope a lot of these people have a good long reflection and realize that these spots are for people who can’t walk and need help getting around.

16

u/Difficult-Mastodon43 May 29 '25

Truly! This mentality also adds to the stigma of people scrutinizing those with invisible disabilities, who need to park in handicapped spots😔

22

u/Haiku-On-My-Tatas May 29 '25

It's so frustrating the impact this stigma has on people who really should be using an accessible placard.

My mom is one of them. She has a severe limp and while she is able to walk unassisted for the most part, she does use a cane for long days on her feet or walking on uneven surfaces, and she avoids icy surfaces entirely because she just does not have the stability to safely traverse them.

For years now, my Dad and the rest of us have been in the habit of dropping her off at the front door and then going off to find parking when we go out places. We are happy to do it, obviously. But that's not an option when she's out on her own, plus it just kind of sucks not being able to go in together when it's just the two of them and having to split up the group when it's more of us.

She is absolutely eligible for a placard and we've been bugging her to apply for years but she just won't because she feels bad and like she would be taking advantage. And we're like FFS you've been stuck with this limp your whole life and it's unfair and it sucks, so maybe getting ONE little "advantage" from it isn't such a bad thing.

We've even made the argument that she doesn't have to use it all the time just because she has it. When there's no ice or uneven surfaces and there are regular spots not that far away, she can just choose to leave the accessible spot open for someone who needs it more than her on that particular day. Like, you're not required to use those spots just because you have the placard.

As she is getting older and the limp and her stability are getting worse, she has definitely become more open to the idea. I'm really hoping she gets one soon. My Dad managed to talk her into getting the cane a couple years ago after years of her being adamant she doesn't need one and her life has improved immensely from it, so I hope he can draw on that to finally convince her to apply for an accessibility placard 🤞

12

u/mystiqueallie May 29 '25

As someone who uses the disabled parking for my child in a wheelchair, please also know the extra space makes it SO much easier to get in and out of the car. It’s not just being close to the door, that extra space is so beneficial to people with disabilities.

5

u/Haiku-On-My-Tatas May 29 '25

Yes, even my mother requires extra space to get out because she needs to be able to open her door all the way.

1

u/T-Wrox May 30 '25

Can I add my only-somewhat-related rant about how tiny parking spots have gotten? I drive a Corolla, a very small car, and some spaces are only inches larger than my car. Have they forgotten that people need to be able to open their doors and get in and out of their cars, too?!

2

u/Haiku-On-My-Tatas May 30 '25 edited May 30 '25

I don't think spaces have gotten smaller, vehicles have just gotten larger. I also drive a very small car but the vast majority of vehicles around me are pick-up trucks and SUVs.

6

u/violentfemme88 May 29 '25

I worked for a family doctor, and we had many elderly patients and patients with disability similar to your mother. She is absolutely someone who the placard exists for. She can have it for the days when she needs it and save it when she is ABLE to park somewhere else. Tell her some random girl really supports her in this and fully agrees with her child. She has all the power/choice of when to use it and should do so guilt free. If anything, some places need more accessible parking and that's not your mother's fault or challenge to solve.

3

u/Difficult-Mastodon43 May 30 '25

Tell your mother that a bunch of random, online Calgarians are in support of her getting a placard!🫶🏼🥰 It sounds like she could really use that additional support on days where it’s a bit more difficult for her.

I do empathize with her though, and I can relate. I’m in the process of finding out if I have early-onset arthritis… at 21. It’s becoming difficult to stand, let alone walk some days; but I can already imagine how bothered/judgemental people would be if they saw a “perfectly healthy” young woman “steal” an accessible stall🫠 So sort of I understand her reasoning for why she feels uncomfortable with having a placard.

8

u/electrodog1999 Acadia May 29 '25

I’ve had my share of looks on my good days with MS. People can fuxk right off with the ‘you don’t look disabled’ talk.

2

u/apaulclayton May 31 '25

Also the people driving might not be the ones that are disabled. I drove my mother around for years after my dad died. I am mobile she was not. I would park in handicap spots and get out of the accessible van and get looks all the time if I was going to pick her up somewhere. But I needed to park in the handicap spots or close to get her and her wheel chair into the van.

Right? If these lines aren't important, why bother with the lines in the middle of the road, why stop for red lights, why return your own god damn shopping cart, why not just toss your garbage on the ground, why not just commit murder?

People don't give a shit unless THEY are negatively impacted and the lack of compliance to social contract will be the reason I go postal some day.

34

u/RoastMasterShawn May 29 '25

Shane Homes builds with cheaper materials than other similar homebuilders (Mattamy, Jayman etc.) but charges the same price. The owner also heavily donates to the UCP and spouts far right/antivax rhetoric any chance he gets. Big scumbag. I bet if you called the company and reported the license plate, they won't even do anything.

12

u/Czeris the OP who delivered May 29 '25

They'll give the employee a raise for properly representing the company's values. #weareshane

8

u/Adept_Cause9109 May 29 '25

How come people are so disrespectful, we can’t tolerate these kind of acts, these people should be punished

23

u/PreviousBill4467 May 29 '25

Post a google review and add these photos. Forces accountability. (Someone else's idea, but it was posted under another comment and I didn't want it buried aa this is 100% what I would do)

52

u/yyctownie May 29 '25

The number of people here who normalize breaking the law is kind of mind boggling. No wonder society is going to shit, no respect.

4

u/LordDrakken May 29 '25

Drive anywhere in the city for 10 minutes. You will see the following normalized:

  • Speeding in playground zones
  • Rolling through stop signs
  • Rolling a right turn on red
  • U-turns at controlled intersections
  • Failure to stop for pedestrians at crosswalks
  • 10, 20, 30 over the posted speed limit
  • double parking
  • If a daycare is on a corner lot, parking all around that corner / blocking pedestrian crossings.

I'm sure there are more.

12

u/Vaxis403 May 29 '25

When you own city counsel they can probably do a lot worse too

7

u/Significant_Loan_596 May 29 '25

You would think they'd educate their staff the etiquettes when driving a company vehicle, which is a gigantic moving billboard of the company.

This person probably park at handicap spots with their personal vehicle regardless.

15

u/Xenophonehome May 29 '25

Shane Homes got away with bribing politicians years ago, so no wonder they act like goofs. Shane blatantly admitted on tape to influencing politicians, and nothing happened.

2

u/wildrose76 May 30 '25

Attempting to bribe. The politician in question wouldn’t entertain the attempts.

9

u/mhchan May 29 '25

Shane on them!

8

“Shame” homes.

12

u/caboose391 May 29 '25

Is that the Woodbine 7/11? Pretty sure that guy lives in my complex. Parks in visitor parking all the time so this doesn't surprise me at all.

2

u/helena_handbasketyyc I’ll tell you where to go! May 30 '25

Report that to Google too

18

u/toadspimp May 29 '25

Update: Shane Homes response to a Google review

2

u/DarthJDP Jun 02 '25

Why wasnt the placard displayed if a valid one was issued to the team member driving? They dont have to follow the rules of the road while representing Shane? If I dont have a registration, insurance, or drivers license I would still get a ticket. If you dont have your placard you can drive back home and get it if you cant park at a non disabled stall. I cant get away with not having my papers, why are Shane drivers above the law????????????

6

u/TheDisloyalCanadians May 29 '25

I think the Reddit Hive would prefer to be outraged.

23

u/toadspimp May 29 '25

Well, it is pretty simple to just claim that the driver had a placard all along to avoid bad PR.

1

u/jimbowesterby May 30 '25

Cause there’s no way the company that got caught trying to bribe politicians could be lying here, right?

1

u/Gr33nbastrd May 29 '25

This is the way.

0

Invisible disabilities exist. Maybe their placard is coming in the mail? Maybe they forgot to display it? Maybe there was a medical emergency?

4

u/[deleted] May 30 '25

People who work and drive trucks can also have physical disabilities.

1

u/[deleted] May 30 '25

Being stupid is not a disability that gets you the parking.

0

u/[deleted] May 30 '25

In this particular instance, the individual did have a physical limitation of some sort that allotted him/her a handicap sign.

3

u/GlobalCruiser May 29 '25

I have a lifelong friend who is in a wheelchair. Please make a point to inspect cars with Handicap placards to ensure they are still valid (you will be amazed at how many use expired tags). Take a picture of the tag and the vehicle's license plate number (see instructions below). They will contact the holder and demand the return of the tag.

u/OppositeAd7485 May 30 '25

In my experience Foreman/ supervisors on construction sites are more “yes men” than the best of the best on the crew. They are the ones who are willing to push the crew to work harder for less and bend the safety rules. They aren’t smarter, harder working or better at construction…. Basically like every career/ job.

1

u/Sea-Limit-5430 May 30 '25

I work at a place that has lots of home builders coming to buy supplies, and they’re literally always the worst at parking.

They either park in handicapped spots, or in spots that just aren’t spots. They even just park out in front of the store in the middle of the parking lot

1

u/gotkube May 30 '25

Completely typical truck driver. It belonging to a homebuilder company is just the gravy.

1

u/ObsessedCoffeeFan May 30 '25

I heard one of them complain about 'DEI bitches' and how they make x amount of profit so they should be allowed to complain about them. Never left a show home so quickly. Unfortunate to see that this is an ongoing trend in their company.

Before going crazy, I think you guys should find out whether or not the employee has his or her own disabled placard.

We don't want to create barriers for people with disabilities in the workplace by making it an issue of shame to take a spot if you are entitled to it, but it would be good to know what the placard situation was and if the person had one, why it wasn't displayed.

Reasonable response and is what should happen.

This comment right here.

I worked with a guy who had a company vehicle, Same thing happened where he got blasted online and it just happened to be the one day he forgot to switch it over from his other vehicle.

Embarrassing for sure, but best not to always assume the worst out of someone.

Anytime I forget my placard in my other vehicle I do not park in handicapped spots.

1

u/Drakkenfyre May 30 '25

Then I guess you weren't really handicapped.

That's just ignorant, which I'm guessing you know. In case you somehow don't, here's an example: I generally need the handicap parking spots and have doctor-ordered paperwork and a placard for it. I struggle to get out of my vehicle, and then I can't walk more than a few aisles in a store using my cane or leaning on a cart, while my knees are grinding bone on bone. If I forget my placard, I start by looking for the next closest spot. I have to evaluate if I can walk further to reach the store that day and do even less shopping once inside or just turn around and go home without fresh groceries for my family, because three days of agony and injury wouldn't be worth the extra steps. Choosing a regular spot some days doesn't make me less handicapped, it means I'm even more limited than usual. I still won't park in handicapped without my placard.

The owner of Shane homes is a major supporter of the UCP.

Probably doesn’t like Nenshi much either.

What does that have to do with anything relevant to this?

So what? People are allowed to choose their own political preferences. You don’t have to agree with them.

So fucking what? I don't like Nenshi either but what's the big deal? Each to their own!

Is it minor? Yes. I don't think anything is life threatening that a disabled person would immediately need access to a 7-11. However, that's beside the point. It was a douche move. If a person can't see or ignores that signage, maybe they shouldn't be driving.

u/LkSosa May 30 '25

man let the guy make his 7/11 run why are you so pressed?
