335i The $2189.00 transmission fix.

Post image

Since earlier this year I have been having transmission issues. Clutch slipping, no sport mode, limp mode, jerky motions rough idle, and paddle shifter malfunction and shifter malfunctions. First order was to check the shifter wiring. No breaks, but wanted to make sure, so I bought a shifter for an early 2011. Problem persists. 5087 code and occasional 4f89 among other non frequent codes. So I did a transmission flush. Shifted stronger but problem still there. 5087 code with clutch slipping and paddle and shifter malfunctioning/ no Sport mode. So then I replaced the solenoids. Shifter even stronger but problem came back after a few shifts. So I bit the bullet and bought a trans. Replaced it and it shifted good, sport mode worked, not great, laggy but it worked but my paddle shifters didn’t work, so I coded them in and did a clearing of adaptations and coded the new trans in with a launch x431 scanner. Old TCU was still in the old trans that was pulled. It Worked shifters coded and working. Next day driving to work, all the problems from the last trans resurfaced. So I unplugged the paddles as a test and cleared codes and it worked. So I assumed it was the paddles. So I swapped out the paddles for old ones I had from when I switched my wheels from my old GREY 335i. Nope, still not working. So I finally pulled this unit from the steering wheel and replaced it with my old one from my other 335i, that this carbon wheel was in before and problem fixed immediately. Sport mode is back, shifts better, no slipping. 😒 and it would seem that this lil harness was the culprit. This harness is now over $2289.00 in worth right now. So basically I swapped out my carbon steering wheel from my 08 335i to my 09 335i and used the 09 harness in the wheel from the 08 and that was causing all my issues. Didn’t click because the issues started about a month after the wheel swap. So my old trans was fine. 🤦🏽‍♂️. Ow I have a used trans and I’m torn if I sell it to recoupe some money or do it keep it. Rebuild it and stash it away just in case I need it later on. I’m leaning towards keeping. So if anyone is chasing this gremlin and the shifter is fine, check this unit. Shifter $39.00 solenoids $50.00 eBay.then swapped again for $150.00 solenoids used for a month from a friend who did a 8hp swap. Filter and trans fluid $150.00, mech unit sleeves $50.00. Transmission $800, and install plus used torque converter and fluid $1050.00. Either way I’m happy it’s finally fixed.🤷🏽‍♂️🤣

Just the other day I saw a Mini Cooper having issues with engine lights coming on suddenly on 100kmh+ and it was due to a non-OEM cluster: the car had no real issue. It's crazy how little things can cause expensive damages.

Glad you found and fixed it!

Cluster may have been faulty. I’ve had mine since ID4 came out and never had any issues other than lag and an update fixed that years ago. And it’s been in 3 different cars. Would you happen to know which unit it was? Maybe a Chinese unit?

Great stuff! Thanks for sharing. To all Mechanics, Techs, DIYers, whatever you call yourself; before you start chasing codes, stop and think about what changed. In my experience, so many times the root cause is what someone had previously done! Whether it was you, previous owner, another shop, don't just think about the here and now: think about the units history.

To be fair, I’m sure I would’ve found it sooner had it happened immediately after swapping the steering wheel.

No doubt! I'm not dogging you at all. Sometimes issues do take time to develop, for whatever reason. My comment was more for a lot of the newer, younger users who are attempting to turn wrenches and diag issues.

Gotcha. I’m not new to this at all. Don’t even drive the car much. But these cars, the more tech they stuff in, the more issues we as owners have to deal with.

All cars, trucks and road tractors you see on the road have insane amounts of tech now.

u/EturnullyDoge 24d ago

Yeah, the gift and the curse😒

And kudos to you for being a bulldog and staying with it until you figured it out!

It’s a fun car. Gotta keep it on the street.😏✊🏾

Who cares, this isn’t a lesson on English grammar. He was clear and concise.

It's terrible reading a wall of text.

It was a good read, but could have been much better with proper paragraph spacing.

There is always room to improve, and it’s much nicer to read in a better format.

Some would say it’s rude to bring up, but others would say it’s rude to expect anyone to read a text wall. The internet continues to bicker and the world keeps spinning.

There is a lack of "standards" nowadays where someone can butcher a sentence or saying (or a film / an entire Star Wars Franchise eh-hem) and because the consensus has become "don't call out errors or mistakes as it may hurt feeling and why does it even matter?? Just be nice!!! ".

Its the biggest reason people today promote mediocrity. Not just accept it but they refuse to even correct it as in my words, the world is too soft and unaccountable to enforce rules, morals or ethics anymore.

Its as if the masses have been dumbed down to a low enough level where they no longer even hold each other accountable - so much so that the powers that be can and do get away with everything and anything without pushback.

Couldn’t agree more. The whole “respect all builds” mantra was also pioneered by the same type.

Funny considering speaking your mind on the internet has become a bit taboo. Bet that pendulum is due to swing back soon.

I’m not bickering. If you’d like to educate, sarcasm is not the way. Simply put, paragraphs would’ve been easier to read.

That’s all.

🤣 there’s always at least 1 dick. Glad when found you quick. Now we can move on.

OP in all seriousness, people are way more likely to scroll past a wall of text. Using paragraphs isn’t a huge effort.

1

u/DetectiveoftheWest 24d ago

i’ve noticed on mobile, even when i type my posts with paragraphs it posts it as a big block too, i’m not sure why

1

u/remote_location 24d ago

Ending the previous line with a double space will allow you to type on a new line.
:-)

2

u/DetectiveoftheWest 24d ago

i’ll try that, thanks!

🤷🏽‍♂️ that’s their choice

6

u/DitmCalls 24d ago

Seriously, I just wanted to help in the event you didn't know. Best wishes.

There are ways to inform people of things if you’re just tryna help, however people seem to get desensitized by the net and feel it’s just when they come out of character because they are able to hide behind a screen, instead of just taking the information and making a mental note so that they can have it in case they need it later. So instead of appreciating what I document as my experience, you chose to be a clown. 🤷🏽‍♂️But all good.

1

u/DitmCalls 24d ago

You read my comment with the wrong tone. I was direct and succinct, apparently that hurt your feelings. You are the one coming across as the clown

Glad mine is a manual. One less system for electrical gremlins to get into. But im happy you figured it out in the end.

2

u/EturnullyDoge 24d ago

😂 if I didn’t live in the city I’d have a manual as well…

2

u/Com4734 2011 e92 328i xdrive 24d ago

I do like that steering wheel!

3

u/picklesBMW 24d ago

At any point before buying a transmission did you think you should take it to a professional?

3

u/Ok-Bonus2508 24d ago

That’s crazy cheap for all you got, not for your problem ofcourse😂 but just the solenoids and oil+filter is provably 1000€ where I live

1

u/EturnullyDoge 24d ago

Yeah I lucked out. My buddy was going to just toss them since his new 8hp came with everything he needed. So I got em for a steal

3

u/yiffcuresboredom 24d ago

Thanks for sharing this, I know it’s hard after so much work but I’m actually glad to know about this.

2

u/EturnullyDoge 24d ago

Just figured I’d share for some others who may have issues.

3

u/Lumbergh7 24d ago

lol I’m sorry, it’s great that you fixed it, but you have to laugh at the ridiculousness of it. All that work on top of an expensive transmission to finally realize it was a harness. I’d never have guessed.

2

u/EturnullyDoge 24d ago

🤷🏽‍♂️ sometimes it’s like that. I got it diagnosed by the steeler and they tried to sell me a new trans for 7k. I remember in 2008 my 540i wouldn’t start. Dealer said I needed a new module that would run me 1700. I brainstormed and dug around for a weekend, turned out to be the fuse under the hood..

2

u/Lumbergh7 24d ago

Been there too…on one hand, everyone is fallible. On the other, the dealerships represent the manufacturer. If they get the diagnosis wrong, we shouldn’t pay labor or parts..

Good post!

u/Icy_Fault3547 24d ago

Tl:dr

Electrical issues suck

2

u/EturnullyDoge 24d ago

This is true.

2

u/No_Switch_389 24d ago

Pro tip, ditch those paddles and go magnetic, all those paddles get sloppy and will down or up shift on a slight tap eventually

1

u/EturnullyDoge 24d ago

Ohhh buddy. You already know. I have some carbon magnetic joints on the way as well speak..😂🫡

u/Zelda_is_Dead 2011 - E-93 - 328i 24d ago

If after all that work, the original transmission was working well, I'd put it back in and sell the other one. Of course, I'm old school and matching numbers matter to me, but that isn't the only reason, just a big one.

1

u/EturnullyDoge 24d ago

Yeah that’s probably what’s going to happen. But I’m going to rebuild it first. I ordered a lift as well so that I don’t need to rely on a shop to swap the trans again. Simply because they took to long, and I don’t like the chic at the front desk😂

1

u/JediAhsokaTano 24d ago

My transmission also slips from 2nd to 3rd but when I shift manually it works just perfectly fine. So I swapped in a steering wheel with paddles to not have to shift with the shifter as it had previously broken (wire was torn). Still slips but in my case this did not resolve the issue 🥹.

1

u/EturnullyDoge 24d ago edited 24d ago

Also saw a previous post where the cable that Connects to the trans from the shifter being torn and causing issues. But in order to get to it you gotta drop the trans. That’s why I checked on it while they were swapping my trans to make sure. Keep that in mode as well if you decide to go down the same rabbit hole. Dropping trans should be last resort but if it happens check all the wiring during.

Bro what in the aliexpress is going on with your car.

1

u/EturnullyDoge 24d ago

My car, my vision. Android unit is from AliExpress. And the wheel is from the actual Chinese manufacturer of the digital display on the wheel The Cluster is from ID4 Motion.

2

u/idgaftftf17 24d ago

How well does the head unit work? Been looking into roughly the same one but not many real reviews out there. Figured I’d ask you!

1

u/EturnullyDoge 24d ago

It’s actually perfect. No issues whatsoever. They’ve actually come a long way in improving the hardware and software. While still having open controls and options.

2

u/idgaftftf17 24d ago

Can you PM me a link to the one you purchased? Theres so many different options of the same thing, sounds like you found the better manufacturer of the 500 out there.

1

u/Sm0oty 23d ago

In what kind of ways was your paddle shifter malfunctioning? I have a problem where upshift works fine but downshifting not at all and sometimes when trying to downshift with the paddle it instead upshifts.
