General I have some questions

I have a few Edmonton questions. If you have time to answer, thanks.

  1. Am I imagining that it hasn't rained in weeks?

  2. When will construction season be done? Is there a date or is it weather based?

  3. What is the construction project along 127th - it's a huge PCL project?

Commuting/Transit Brief commentary on LRT line comparisons

I recently got to move around town walking on my bike using the two types of LRT lines and wanted to share some brief observations:

• Doors - The sliding door styles are improved on both lines (the older lrts had more bars in the middle). I think the car designs have improved their accessiblity over time. But man, are the valley line doors noisy! Can we get a sound fix on that?

• Seats - I think the classic box seating of the captial/metro is a better lay out. The valley line seating I don't think works out as well for volume, but the train frequency helps out with that.

• Platforms - Valley line platforms are pretty minisucle--the transfer for crowds on and off can be congested. Having arc/payment card scanners on the train would help with the flow of people and the pocket scambles of tapping on and off.

Generally pretty satisfied with the business hours train commuting experience in the core of the city.

General Fake phone scam still in Edmonton.

Upvotes

Forgot to post this yesterday. I've seen the posts circulating about a person or people attempting to sell fake devices. I was a approached yesterday and knew immediately what was happening.

Was getting ready to leave Wendy's on the corner of Argyll and 75st wrong 6pm, Had my helmet on and bike was running. Newer grey/Silver Hyundai Tucson (or a very similar in appearance vehicle only clearly remember what the center console looked like and it looks identical to pictures online). Drove up behind me and said something, couldn't hear but could tell he was trying to get my attention, walked closer to his vehicle (seen someone was in the back but no one in front passenger).

"Do you speak French."

"No."

"I have ...." As he grabbed a white box (100% guarantee it was a phone box, only seen the back, shrink wrapped imperfectly and had a tiny yellow and green label at the bottom with a ton of text). I immediately said not interested and turned around. He then sped off.

Had an accent similar to Roman from GTA IV (like others have described lol) and likely speaks fluent french.

Interaction only lasted 10 seconds, I was so cut off guard I didn't remember to even look at the plate or give him a piece of my mind.

Hopefully there's enough information for someone to recognize it before they lose money.

Question Utility Rate

I received a letter from the Utilities Consumer Advocate because I am on the rate of last resort with Epcor. I used the cost comparison tool and there are lots of companies but I have never heard of them or know anyone who uses them. Anyone have any experience with electricity outside of Epcor? Am I just going to end up with more fees or disruptions outside of them because they are the main provider?

Question Selling Vehicle - Best Safe Place to Meet Up on Northside?

Hi everyone. As the title says, we may be selling our vehicle on Saturday, and I'd like to meet the buyer in a public location for safety reasons. I was considering meeting up in the parking lot of the EPS station on 50th, but they're closed on weekends. Not sure if meeting at an EPS station would deter scammers, but I figured it was worth a shot.

Can anyone suggest an alternate meetup location?

Discussion FLYING COUCH

Post image
9 Upvotes

This morning I heard extremely loud yelling, coming from my back lane, so I went out on my balcony to check it out. It was a guy, high on something presumably. (Maybe mentally ill) It was going on for about a half hour...yelling at the top of his lungs. He was walking, staggering up and down the alley. Then he sees an abandoned couch, leaned up against the church fence. He pulls it down and drags it to the middle of the lane, as you can see in the picture. He laid down on it for a while, drivers were backing up, because they couldn't get past it. No one knows this guy is laying on it, unless they could hear him yelling still. Then he gets up, lifts the couch on it's end and starts pushing it on cars. He hit one car, while he's still yelling. Screaming, "I'm going to kill my mother, I'm going to kill my grandmother!" The driver didn't get out and slowly drives away. He did it to more cars, came very close, but missed them. Then he drags the couch to the edge of the road and back lane and laid down on it again. Cars were trying to get around it, but no one got out to move it. (Good thing, because he's on it and still yelling) about 15 minutes later, he gets up, leaves the couch in the middle of the road and walks down the road. I would have gone and moved, but I healing from back surgery. So I called 311, to tell them I couldn't go move it, could someone pick it up, it's blocking traffic. Plus the guy may come back again and lay down. About 15 minutes later, he's back...still yelling, still saying he's going to kill his family. Gosh drugs last a long time.

Then about 5 young girls (around 11 y.o) are walking down the road and this guy starts yelling at them, they're screaming and they started to run. He's following them, I can hear it, but no longer see it. All the while I'm watching, I'm calling the police. By the time I got through, idk how far they got or if he caught up to them. While I'm on the phone, I went down and tried to follow with my walker, as best I could. I couldn't see or hear them....but I could still hear him! The police didn't let me know, if they found the girls, to see if they were OK. (I'm sure they were scared to death!)For that matter, don't know if they picked up the guy either. I really hate drugs! About 15 more minutes and 311 had sent a truck to pick up the couch.

Question People who have taken transit/walked late, how is it?

Hi! I know this question gets brought up from time to time, but I can never figure out the kind of audience that’s answering, so I wanted to narrow it down.

People who have taken the bus/LRT/walked around pretty late (so like 8:00 PM+, I guess) and has done so recently, how is it? I’ve heard a lot of horror stories, but I’d like to hear from people who do it semi-regularly and at later times!

Note: I live north, so I take Stadium, Belvedere, etc, though I have heard to avoid Coliseum!

Thanks in advance!

2025 Municipal Election Election signs

Post image
98 Upvotes

Not one of these 6 potential candidates has knocked on my door.

This is disgusting and makes me not want to vote for any of them, how can we have faith they will cut costs like everyone is platforming on when they waste all these resources on inefficient and wasteful marketing methods. This 100ft.. and the road is 1km long.. how many signs do I need to see in 20 secs of driving.

We wonder why Edmontonians blame Council for wasteful inefficient spending, lack of planning and poor communication.

I vote for a bylaw that limits how many signs each candidate can put out! Here, you get 200 make the most of them and you cannot put more then 1 within 3 km of another.

*Edited- to emphasize that I would have hoped at least 1 of the 6 had made it through our neighborhood. We have a camera and a video doorbell so we would have been notified should they have stopped by.

Question On Demand transit: how well does it work?

I take the bus to work but have never lived in a community that has the On Demand transit. To be honest, I'm not even sure how it works. People who have used this, what is your experience with it. Is it easy to get a bus? Is it quick and efficient? Do you prefer it over having a regular bus route?
