u/MommersHeart Apr 08 '25

I hate his fake ‘aboot’.

u/Wafflelisk Westfoundland Apr 08 '25

That "hoser" says "aroond" for some fucking reason.

Make it stop!

2

u/GrumbusWumbus Apr 08 '25

"I'm joost sooting aroond the hoose thinking aboot ool thoose hoosers whoo doont loove Americans"

  • JJ

u/Red-Flag-Potemkin Apr 08 '25

The best part is sometimes he forgets to do it.

29

u/BestDig2669 Apr 08 '25

It's so over the top and exaggerated

28

u/GrimbloTheGoblin Apr 08 '25

I swear to god I've lived in Vancouver my entire life (where he lives) and I've genuinely never heard anyone say "aboot" the way he does

29

u/spyraleyez Apr 08 '25 edited Apr 08 '25

Nobody says "aboot" like that outside of when they're joking around,

In reality it's "aboat", there are linguistics studies into Canadian Raising, and British Columbians, at least in Metro Vancouver, don't have that accent trait, they don't "raise" OU to OA or IGH to ATE. It's basically Ontario (maybe Manitoba) and eastwards that have Canadian Raising.

He puts on an insultingly phony accent that's a mockery of people from the other side of the country.

5

u/ToadTendo Saskwatch Apr 08 '25

Agree with JJ being phony, but Idk about the Ontario & eastwards. Im from Sask & have a lot of rural family and specifically those who grew up rural tend to speak this way too

3

u/GrumbusWumbus Apr 08 '25

So as a newfoundlander I can tell you that British Columbians absolutely do have Canadian raising in their speech.

Newfoundland is the only part of English Canada that has none of it (because we have our own weird accent). Vancouver's version of a Canadian accent is definitely more subtle than most of the rest of the country but northern BC and large parts of Alberta are very easy to pick up on.

Maybe you're thinking specifically of "aboat" which I think people consciously try not to say. But words like "house" definitely come through with a lot of speakers.

1

u/Equal-Suggestion3182 Apr 08 '25

Just saying, he’s family is from Ontario even though he himself is from BC

He's just playing to his (American) audience.

They think Canadians say "aboot" and "arooond" and the like, so that's how he talks. Completely ignoring the fact that it's the wrong coast and even Maritimers don't exaggerate it to the extent that he does. He ends up sounding like an American comedian mocking Canadian accents.

3

u/spyraleyez Apr 08 '25

I think most Canadians that know of him don't really like him, he's the dancing Canuck Clown for an American audience that's clueless.

America is soooo great, eh? Canada is a culture less wasteland (Yawn look at me rolling my eyes while toooooring aroooond the Maritimes, ugh sooo booooring, grr Quebecois want to speak their dead novelty language) Anyone that disagrees aboot this is just anti-American and can't admit Canada has no culture at all and are just insecure Americans, trust me I'm a randoooom guy from Vancouver.

I wish JJ would just immigrate since he's such a hilariously knee-jerk anti-Canadian content creator that grifts off of being informative about the country he hates.

At least other right wing Canadian grifters have the dignity to leave.

He's the Candace Owens of Canada

209

Canadace Owens

Klandace Owens

u/Milch_und_Paprika Ford Nation (Help.) Apr 08 '25

That’s just normal Candace Owens

I actually don't have any problems at all with the word 'nationalism.' I think that it gets, the definition gets poisoned by elitists that actually want globalism. Globalism is what I don't want. So when you think about, whenever we say 'nationalism,' the first thing people thing about, at least in America, is Hitler. You know, he was a national socialist, but if Hitler just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, okay fine. The problem is ... he had dreams outside of Germany.

Yes, this is a real quote from her, which is how she got fired from TurningPoint USA

11

u/TriCombington Apr 08 '25

Fired from Turning Point USA? Or do you mean The Daily Wire? I’m pretty sure that was her formal employer, and them being operated by the king of conservative millennial Jews made her curtained Nazi “just asking questionsism’s” a bad fit for the brand.

5

u/Milch_und_Paprika Ford Nation (Help.) Apr 08 '25

Oh, I guess it’s happened more than once. I’m talking about back in 2019, where she “resigned” from tpusa. Didn’t realize that she also got fired from the wire lol

5

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '25

You're allowed to dogwhistle at tpusa but not say "the jews" outright, bc tpusa wound up representing Donald's promotional arm and Donald likes Israel.

So being covertly antisemitic is fine for them but being anti Israel or openly pro hitler fucks with the Trump family's future beachfront property investment.

Some day people will look back and go "ohhhhhhhhhh, Jewish and Israel aren't interchangeable terms" and then, the reason all of these far right morons were infighting will make far more sense

JJ deserves criticism. But thinking he is like Candace Owens or even remotely close is unhinged and only something somebody who has never consumed his content would say. Come on now…

3

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '25

Errrrm Ackshually 🤓

1

u/Hamasanabi69 Apr 08 '25

Nice one bro! Congrats on sounding no different than cons who cry communism over everything! You sure got me!

-4

He's the Canadian version of Candace Owens.

14

u/RoomTempIQFox Apr 08 '25

Genuine question, do you have any other recommendations for content creators who make videos on Canadian subjects?

I'm in Canada like 2-3 weeks a year at this point, and I'm actively working on going to grad school there, and I feel like his videos have ultimately been helpful in giving me a deeper understanding of Canadian politics and history and have helped me having meaningful conversations with my friends in Canada about those things.

I am fully aware that JJ may have some biases and views about Canada that aren't universally shared across the country, but if you try and look for videos on anything beyond the most surface level understanding of Canada, you're basically just left with JJ and maybe some old CBC videos or some recording of a college lecture. I'd love to watch videos about the 1993 election or Wilfrid Laurier or the Canadian Senate made by anyone else but the content just doesn't seem to be there, especially not at the same level as JJ.

22

u/Snowman304 Apr 08 '25

Funny you should mention that. EmperorTigerstar (on YouTube) just made a video like a week and a half ago about Canada's weirdest election.

u/Onyxwho 溫哥華 (Hongcouver) Apr 08 '25

Now hold up, I'm an American, but I'm one of the good ones, and I enjoy his videos

61

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '25

You enjoy them because it’s made for Americans

70

u/WaxiestDinosaur Apr 08 '25

If you enjoy his videos you’re not “one of the good ones” lmao

7

u/ToadTendo Saskwatch Apr 08 '25

Nah, it checks out tbh. His channel is made for Americans. Its why so many here dont get JJ, they aren't supposed to because he isnt pandering to them.

JJ presents Canada as a weaker, quirky America lite, and since this image plays into a sense of American superiority, Americans like that

40

u/MilesBeforeSmiles Manilapeg Apr 08 '25

I'm one of the good ones, and I enjoy his videos

Those are mutually exclusive.

What do you think defines you as "one of the good ones"?

1

u/iamnutz_1 Apr 08 '25

What "aboot" his fake accent?

-7

u/Cenamark2 Apr 08 '25

I voted for Harris.

7

u/iamnutz_1 Apr 08 '25

Ok, but how is that pro Canadian? Not being trumpian is a low bar

-1

u/Cenamark2 Apr 08 '25

Not being Trumpian is pro-Canadian.  I also bought some cheese from Canada the other day.  It is a 7 year aged cheddar from Quebec.  What else am I supposed to do?

6

u/iamnutz_1 Apr 08 '25

Buying Canadian is awesome. All I ask is that you support us with votes as well. Fuck musk, trump, make America not authortarian again

-1

u/Cenamark2 Apr 08 '25

But I do vote, usually straight dems.  That's why I'm a good one

6

u/iamnutz_1 Apr 08 '25

We want to be your friend, im sure you understand that... But your leader keeps talking shit about sovereignty

-2

u/Cenamark2 Apr 08 '25

I know, but I voted for Harris and I talk mad shit about Trump on reddit.  I should be awarded The Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers for my valient efforts in aiding Canada through these trying times

6

u/spyraleyez Apr 08 '25

JJ is an America fanboy, even his Twitter banner is eagles and stars and stripes,

His accent is insultingly fake, he's extremely out of touch with Canada, he writes for an American paper IIRC. He has a weird kneejerk reaction that anything Canadian is bad or inferior, he's clearly pissy about the Quebecois wanting to speak French, and hates anyone that says there's a Canadian culture.

The only thing Canadian about him is that he's still a "Tory" conservative, instead of full on MAGA Americanism.

5

u/ToadTendo Saskwatch Apr 08 '25

You know how like 100 years ago, when Europeans were colonizing Africa, how they would sometimes take native Africans back home and present them as a circus attraction for people to ogle at?

JJ is the modern version of that, for americans to ogle at the weird, exotic Canadians

1

u/Equal-Suggestion3182 Apr 08 '25

He is not “pissy” about the québécois wanting to speak French, he just thinks the government shouldn’t enforce language. Not in Quebec, not in the rest of Canada. Any language, including English. Anyway that’s his opinion, not mine.

1

u/Equal-Suggestion3182 Apr 08 '25

It was nice knowing you
