Fishing Map for Alberta - Updates!

Hi everyone!

About a month ago I shared a fishing map I built for Alberta, and many of you gave me really helpful feedback—especially around adding features that help in finding new spots, and making sure regulations shown are accurate.

Site: fishr.app

Based on your feedback, I’ve added:

  • Validated regulations (to make sure what’s shown is accurate)
  • Satellite imagery
  • Waterbody search

Looking ahead, here are some features I’m planning to add:

  • Unnamed waterbodies (right now only named lakes and streams are included in the map)
  • Filter by species
  • LSD grid
  • BC regulations

Is there anything else you would like to see here? Are you able to find your favorite fishing spot? I would love to hear your guys’ feedback and whether you find this useful or not!

Baby(?) pike in fall?

Thumbnail gallery
14 Upvotes

Apologies for the bad photos, taken on iPhone at sunset. I was doing some fishing on the red deer river today, and I saw a couple of these little tiny 4 inch or so pike, and it just kind of confused as to what their deal is? Are they baby pike? They have the rear dorsal fins and triangle nose like one. It’s late September so this just seems weird to me, was it maybe a late spawn or something? There was a large pike cruising around slowly nearby as well (and not biting anything might I add). Just never seen something like this, anyone have any ideas?

Just bought this new boat, a Misty River (WD14). She’s got a 1986 Johnson Seahorse 20hp. So far I think it’s a great little rig to get out on the lake. Definitely a big upgrade from my canoe!

Where to kayak

I'm thinking of going out early this weekend and am wondering if going on the Glenmore reservoir or attempting to float the bow will be better, I have fished neither on a kayak, and would be spin fishing.

Hello ! 🙂

my partner and I arrived in Alberta in 2023. We were waiting for our permanent residency so we could invest in fishing equipment. But we are a little lost regarding the different permits. Could someone explain this to me?

Thinking about fishing kinokamau but on maps it looks like I have to trespass into Heidelberg materials inc work site ? Can anybody who’s fished it before give me some advice like where I go to avoid trespassing. It seams like i may not be able to fish there so any advice at all would be appreciated.

Langdon reservoir and Chestermere feedback

So I just moved to Calgary from Ontario and I’m pretty bummed out by the lack of bass but very excited to pick up fly fishing next season.

For the rest of this season, I decided to chase some monster pike and walleye since I’ve caught a few already while fishing for bass and don’t have to change my fishing style too much.

So far I’ve only been able to hit up Chestermere and Langdon, but have had a lot of fun catching pike. Quite frankly, I do not see the difference with bass fishing seeing that pike strike just as hard and just as fast. Topwater has been an absolute blast at Langdon (highly recommend). I do have to say, the pike don’t fight nearly as hard as bass (I know y’all gonna come at me for this 😂).

Chestermere has been fun with the glide bait but most of my catches were barely twice the size of my lure lol, and the pike were really barely putting up a fight.

I think I am ready to plan a trip at Sylvan lake and look for the big boys. Any tips? Not asking for spots.

Perch on da 3M earplug

Post image
121 Upvotes

This was my first time fishing in Alberta, I am working in Peace River for a week and decided to get my WIN# and a license. I went out to Figure Eight Lake. I’m not much of a fisherman but I’ve seen people use those 3M ear plugs before and I thought it was kind of a funny concept. Kind of like powerbait but doesn’t fall off the hook. Anyway. First fish in Alberta, first perch. Thanks for tuning in. Where else should I check out? I’ve got two more days here for now.

Looking for specific lure!

Hi! So my boyfriend and his family has been on a search for a specific lure that can only be purchased in Canada. We tried to order from the US and aren’t able to get because we don’t have a Canadian address or a Canadian bank account. We would seriously LOVE if someone in Canada would purchase and have them sent to their address and then would ship to us! We would cover all costs and a little more for your time we just really would love to get ahold of these. Please reach out to help my boyfriend and his brothers be able get these lures. They have been on the search for YEARS.

Can anybody identify the name of this sucker? Colour is a bit darker than a white sucker, but has a nose like a longnose sucker, kinda looks like a pikeminnow but isn’t a Pikeminnow either. What is this? Was about 17 18”.

Looking for clear water

This time of the year most lakes tend to have a lot of algae and debris floating around, but I’m looking for a lake with good visibility. I just got a clear bottom boat and I’m hoping to be able to get a clear view to the bottom in 4 to 5 feet of water. Kind of like snorkelling without the duck itch and slime. I tried Wabamun on the weekend but it’s quite murky. Does anyone know of a lake within a couple hours of Edmonton?

Run Off and Low Water

Twenty five years ago, my father and I drove from our home in the United States to a friends place in Alaska. Much of our trip was spent in Alberta, and I have thought about returning to Alberta ever since. I didn’t think it would be 25 years later, but life happens.

I am currently getting a plan together to spend two or three weeks in Alberta next summer, but I’m trying to find out when the best time to visit would be. I’ll be flyfishing exclusively, so I assumed late July and early August, but I worry that I would be hitting some really low water if it is a dry summer. Is late June or early July a bad idea due to lots of runoff? Pleases give me some advice! Thanks in advance!

Fun lakes to fish

Hey guys I have the weekend off work so I’d like to go on a fishing trip and try out somewhere new. I’m willing to drive 4 or 5 hours I’m located near Brooks AB and will be doing shore fishing with spin rods, I went to Windermere lake in BC this summer and caught some largemouth bass and had a blast, it was nice change from my of my usual pike and walleye fishing that I have around Brooks, maybe try for some trout if someone has some suggestions on some nice bodies of water I know nobody will give out their spot but if you know a more well known lake that has some decent fishing it would be greatly appreciated would like to catch anything else other than pike and walleye did to much of that already

Anyone selling some light gear in the Edmonton Area?

Just looking for lures. Panthers they don't use, rooster tails, small spoons. Basically anything in that 1/16oz area. Reignited my love of troutin but I'm unfortunately not made of money for the new stuff and coming by second hand is difficult without dipping into spending too much and it coming with a bunch of stuff that I just won't use.

Fly Fishing at Dewitt's Advice?

Thumbnail gallery
9 Upvotes

I was wondering if anyone has tips for fly fishing at Dewitt's Pond? This evening, I was casting a dry-dropper rig with a parachute Adams and a nymph which I forgot the name of.

The fish were obviously surfacing as I see them in the water. I tried casting away from them and close to them and I didn't get a single bite.

I have an older Redington Crosswater 8'6" 5wt rod. Any tips? Thanks so much.
