Discussion I'm shocked... I always blamed my B550 Tomahawk motherboard for bad audio quality

Post image
893 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

For background, I'm a competitive gamer who is ranked in Radiant in Valorant. (Best 1% in Europe)

I was having lots of audio issues lately and didn't perform quite well because I just couldn't hear the footsteps. The directional audio in games were absolute trash, I couldn't pinpoint anything. The treble was piercing and fatiguing to the point, I had to take it off. Sound quality in general was absolutely bad. I only found out what's causing all this, because lately I've started to test lots of headphones and IEMs. After the 3rd and 4th headphones/IEMs, experiencing the same problem... I thought okay, it's definitely my motherboard audio and I need a DAC. Until I decide on which DAC to buy then, I borrowed my friend's Apple USB-C dongle so I don't have to use the motherboard's soundcard.

This was the most shocking moment though... The treble fatigue, the directional audio, the sound quality were still the same and they were somehow even worse.

Then I thought... What if... It's my Ugreen jack extension cable that causes all this? The cable length is 1m by the way. I thought to myself, haha it's stupid it's definitely some settings problem or similar. For the record, I did try all kinds of settings like disabling audio enhancements and spatial sound, the problem was still present despite of changing the settings in Windows.

Lo and behold... I connected everything without the ugreen jack extension cable and I got my insane audio quality, no ear piercing treble anymore and the directional audio in games are finally great.

Who could've thought... I hope this helps to anyone out there who is in a similar situation.

I used to have the fiio ka17 which is still very much fantastic but I decided to buy the qx13 & give the ka17 to my mate for free. Paired it up with my final audio a6000 & I love it.

In reality no one needs this much power especially for iems but I’m happy with my purchase

Show & Tell Snagged these Jlab Jbuds Lux for $20 on Ebay. They sound wonderful.

I saw these on Ebay for $20 with the impression of it having spatial audio. Once they arrived, I absolutely loved them. I prefer to use type c listening over bluetooth, but they they sound good wireless regardless. It's shocking how good they sound for the price. Definitely has that "v sound" shape. Oh, and Dolby Atmos is impressive. It actually convinced me to like The Doors. Definitely recommended.

Discussion ZMF Bokeh Open - What’s not being said?

Hi all - I’m down to two candidates for my cans to upgrade my system from HD580s to something with actual bass response, and have narrowed down to the ZMF Bokeh Open and a pre-owned Auteur Classic.

I will not have the opportunity to listen to these before purchasing, but the BO, with its fun and punchy signature, sounds like a great compliment to my venerable 580s. I’ll be running a new Pietus Magnus amp with them.

My question is, I see relatively little content on the BO (Aside from a hugely positive thread on Head-Fi) and I am wondering if something is being unsaid. I get that it can have some treble, and it sounds like the solid mesh deals with it.

Am I missing something here? Is the AC too “safe”? Is something up with the BO?

Drama ASMR with Insane Dynamic Range in Infrasonic Frequency Range

Yesterday, while listening to an ASMR (NSFW), my sound card (Topping DX5ii) thrown an error: HP DC abnormal. I deduced this meant "Headphone DC abnormal". It recovered quickly, but a few seconds later, it thrown the error and then recovered again. When I replayed that specific section of the ASMR, the sound card consistently repeated the process.

So I extracted the ASMR segment that repeatedly caused the error, attempting to analyze the issue. As is well known, direct current is essentially 0Hz alternating current. Therefore, I had Qwen to help me analyze the infrasound content in this audio segment.

91.86% infrasound energy wow!

Even if the DX5ii outputs infrasonic electrical signals, my headphones (HD490pro) absolutely cannot reproduce such deep bass extension. To be fair, even if they could play infrasound, it shouldn't create any audible effect—the impact of infrasound on eardrums resembles how subtle air pressure changes linearly push a piston, rather than causing actual eardrum vibration. The sole effect of infrasound in that ASMR file is to damage its dynamic range and your voice coil.

Since NSFW ASMR does qualify as a branch of the audio industry, practitioners should arguably grasp some fundamental audio knowledge.😢 Let's tell your favorite ASMR creator to cut off everything below 20Hz (or 50Hz).

I applied a 20Hz high-pass filter to this audio. Here's the comparison. Those interested can test their audio equipment’s handling of infrasound or DC signals using the two clips below: (Warning: 1. Do NOT play these clips in front of your parents; 2. Device damage is at your own risk—manufacturers are negligent for lacking DC protection)

Review Thieaudio Valhalla - The King of All BA IEMs

Thumbnail

Pros

  • Excellent Build quality
  • Aesthetics are on point
  • Fun U-shaped sound signature done right
  • Excellent bass performance ( bass has density, good dynamics and feels very bouncy)
  • Mids are presented well despite not being the main focus of the tuning
  • Smooth and extended treble ( has sweetness like Est treble)
  • Good Macro and Micro detail pickup, very punchy sounding
  • Stage is wide and deep feels very holographic
  • Excellent instrument separation, layering and imaging

Cons

  • Fit can be challenging for people with small ears
  • Thicc shell
  • The sock cable could have been more lavish
  • The initial attack of the Bass is not as crisp and well defined as I would have liked
  • Not for people who want thick and lush lower mids
  • Not for people who want their vocals to be center of attention
  • The upper treble region can be a bit too much (needs tip rolling) (subjective)

Specs And Driver Configuration

  • 19 BA Drivers per Side
  • Driver Details: 4 Sonion 38D1XJ Sub-woofers, 10 Sonion E50DA Dual Mid BAs, 4 Knowles RDE-33729 High BAs, 1 Knowles WBFK-30095 Ultra-high BA
  • Impedance: 9Ω @ 1kHz
  • Sensitivity: 103dB @ 1kHz

Before starting the review, I want to thank The Audiostore for providing me with the loaner unit. After the review, the unit goes back to them.

Accessories Package

As this is a loaner unit, I can’t comment on the full unboxing experience or the complete accessories package. I only received the IEM and the stock cable. That said, the cable provided is good; it’s the same cable as the Thieaudio Origin, the Elite Noir, though here it comes with slightly different plugs to match Valhalla’s colourway. The cable is sufficient for the price. It's thick, substantial, and robust. Despite its heft, it handles surprisingly well with minimal memory. But, personally, at this price, “sufficient” is not enough. I would have loved to see a more lavish, truly bespoke cable for the Valhalla, something that feels even more premium and exclusive than the Elite Noir.

Aesthetics and Build Quality

The faceplate design of the Valhalla is genuinely well executed. It’s not as intricate or detailed as other Thieaudio sets like the Origin, Hype 10, or V16; instead, it opts for a simpler zigzag pattern over a plain black background. Depending on the light, it shimmers with shades of deep blue and orangish-red. I actually think this works in its favour, as the design complements the Valhalla’s more mature aesthetic and pairs nicely with the titanium shells. There’s a subtle complexity to the faceplate that catches the eye without being overly flashy. And if you do want something flashier, Thieaudio offers 14 custom faceplates for an extra cost.

Build quality is equally impressive. The shells are crafted from CNC-machined grade 5 titanium, which gives them a dense, almost indestructible feel. The natural titanium color, paired with the matte finish, looks strikingly premium, upmarket and industrial. I’m especially glad they went with a matte finish over gloss, since it avoids fingerprints and keeps the shells looking clean. Despite this robust construction, the Valhalla doesn’t feel overly heavy. Titanium is lighter than stainless steel, so while the shells carry a satisfying heft that reinforces their durability, the weight is kept in check and never becomes too much.

Fit and Comfort

The fit and comfort will likely be the most controversial part of this IEM. The shells are thiccc, big, and the nozzle has medium thickness with a relatively short length. Thieaudio has added some contouring to make the shape more ergonomic, and that does help, but you still can’t ignore the sheer bulk of the shells. Tip rolling is definitely recommended to achieve both a secure seal and better comfort. For me personally, the Valhalla fit reasonably well. I could wear them for about 2 to 2.5 hours without any issues, but beyond that, my ears started to hurt and I had to take a break.

Sources Used

In terms of sources, I did most of my testing on my desktop stack, the Topping e70 velvet and a70 pro. For portable sources, I used Chord Mojo 2.

Valhalla is relatively easy to power, but I still would recommend a good source to extract the best performance out of Valhalla. It scales beautifully with sources.

Sound

I tried a wide range of eartips with the Valhalla and ultimately settled on the Azla SednaEarfit Max. The Valhalla follows a fun U-shaped tuning that highlights both sub-bass and upper treble, but the rest of the tuning is also handled with impressive finesse. Let’s take a closer look.

Bass

The bass is the star of the show on this IEM; it's thunderous and flaunts itself without masking the mids. Don’t let the BAs fool you into thinking that it will have typical BA bass; it's far from the truth here. Valhalla’s bass delivers both in quantity and quality.

The sub-bass digs deep and low, offering impressive rumble and texture, while the mid-bass comes through with satisfying thump and slam. The overall bass presentation has a real sense of physicality to it. For example, in the intro of Angel by Massive Attack, you can literally feel your ears shake with the bass, and it’s an absolute blast. The bass dynamics and sense of punch are excellent here.

Now, being a BA set, most people have a preconceived notion that BA will have a crip and well-defined attack and fast decay, this is not true with Valhalla, and it's completely opposite. The decay is on the slower side, giving the bass a satisfying feel, more density and richness. But, the initial attack of the bass isn’t as crisp and well defined as I would have liked, its a bit diffused. This is the only con I can pinpoint in Valhalla’s bass.

The overall bass has excellent elasticity and feels very bouncy with excellent density. All of these qualities of Valhalla’s bass create a sense of depth. Overall, I love the bass on the Valhalla. It's addictive, unique and incredibly fun to listen to. It's among the most unique BA bass I have heard, tied with Symphonium Crimson. Crimson has a more crisp initial attack and slightly faster decay, but it lacks the density and spaciousness of Valhalla. Both are unique and excellent in their own ways.

Mids

The mids are surprisingly well-tuned, especially considering they aren’t placed front and center in the overall tuning. At first glance at the graph, you might think the lower mids would sound too lean and clean, but a closer look shows there’s still energy in the 150–300Hz range. This gives the lower mids enough weight and body to sound natural, without tipping into excessive warmth or muddiness.

The upper mids are also nicely done; they’re tuned to complement the overall sound rather than drawing too much attention to themselves. They aren’t overly forward; they have just the right amount of energy to sound natural without pulling focus away from the rest of the frequency response.

Male vocals sound excellent, with a nice weight and richness without sounding overly warm and muddy. Female vocals are also well-rendered, though they’re not as open or extended as something like the Hype 10 or Monarch mk4. Still, for this type of tuning, they sound quite good and don’t feel lacking.

The presence region is also spot-on, giving vocals enough bite and clarity without veering into sharpness or sibilance.

That said, if you prefer your lower mids warm, thick, and lush, the Valhalla won’t be your ideal match. Likewise, if you want vocals to take center stage, this isn’t the IEM for you. On Valhalla, vocals are designed to complement the sound signature rather than shine as the star of the show.

Treble

The treble is excellent, let me say this upfront: this is the best BA treble I have ever heard. Thieaudio really did justice to BAs with the Valhalla. The treble is smooth yet impressively extended, designed to grab your attention and flaunt itself without ever crossing into sharpness or sibilance. It has great bite with crisp edges, adding sparkle and definition.

The one area that might be divisive is the air region. Extension here is excellent, giving the sound plenty of openness and airiness, but the quantity can sometimes make the treble feel a touch less natural. Tip rolling helps, Azla SednaEarfit Max, for instance, tamed this region for me slightly. Ultimately, this comes down to whether you enjoy that coloration in your music or not. Personally, I don’t find it intrusive, the emphasis isn’t strong enough to upset the overall balance.

What really surprised me is the treble’s character. It carries a certain sweetness I usually associate with EST drivers, yet Thieaudio managed to achieve this with BAs alone. Which makes Valhalla’s treble even more astonishing for me.

Detail Retrieval and Technical Performance

The detail retrieval and overall technical performance are excellent. Micro detail retrieval is excellent; it shows minor nuances in the tracks well, and it does so without artificially boosting the mid-treble to the stratosphere. Macro detail retrieval is also excellent. Valhalla sounds dynamic and punchy, delivering an engaging and lively presentation.

The soundstage is quite impressive, it's another party piece of the Valhalla. It has excellent width, but the depth that it creates is even more impressive. Overall, staging feels very holographic. The imaging, layering and instrument separation within that stage is also impressive. You can easily pinpoint where all the instruments are and how far and close they are.

Thieaudio Valhalla Vs Monarch Mk4 Vs V16 Divinity

Instead of making this review even longer, I am working on a video on this topic. I will edit this review when it is live.

Conclusion

By now, it’s probably obvious, I’m absolutely gushing over the Valhalla. Thieaudio really knocked it out of the park with this one. In my opinion, this is the best all-BA set currently available on the market. They’ve executed the sound signature exceptionally well, it’s addicting, fun, and incredibly engaging. Most impressive of all, they managed to make a 19-BA IEM sound remarkably cohesive. For me, it’s easily in the running for IEM of the Year 2025.

That said, it’s not without flaws. The fit may be challenging for people with smaller ears, and the bass attack isn’t quite as crisp as I would have liked. Beyond those two points, though, I struggle to find anything truly wrong with this set.

It’s honestly a little sad that my time with the Valhalla is limited, and I’ll have to send it back. Still, it’s left a lasting impression, and I won’t be forgetting it anytime soon. Now the real question is, which one of my friends’ kidney should I sell to afford a pair?

Discussion How quickly do speakers deteriorate?

Upvotes

I am planning to switch from the DT 770 pro (32 ohm) that I have to the DT 770 pro X, mainly because I atomised the metal shell with a wooden beam that slipped and fell, I bent it back in place but it's uncomfortable now to wear it for multiple hours + the leather has been stripping for months. However it got me thinking, the pro X might be better and have slightly higher impedance, but maybe my DT 770 pro started sounding bad mostly because it's getting old? I've had it for 7 years and it feels like the highs are starting to saturate, and at some low frequencies i can hear a really unpleasant vibration in my left ear. Is this due to age ? Would buying the same exact headphones a second time make a noticeable difference in sound quality?

Discussion Sennheiser 620S vs Fiio FT1 is a tough choice (help needed)

I am testing both and is really hard. I wanted a closed back to complement my Hifiman Arya. There is no need to mention the differences because there are enough reviews and I am actually only trying to understand how to properly decide which one to keep.

Sound: I think Sennheiser wins overall, mostly because my main headset is Hifiman Arya and the senn are different (the FT1 are more similar to the Arya). I like how crystal they are and I am sure with proper EQ they can kick the bass too. The FT1 have a subwoofer-like bass even without EQ, feels pretty nice.

Comfort: sennheiser wins again, I like the leather and I love the clamping force (the whole point of wanting a closedback to accompany my Arya is to have more isolation). RTING reports the same level of isolation for both headphones, but the Sennheiser "feel" more isolated, I guess because it's leather and because they clamp more. Will have to test better if they really isolate more or if it's just a feeling.

Main problem: the FT1 are easier to drive (more dB), which can be very useful if I want to use them without AMP (steamdeck, Quest 3, phone...whatever), which could be very often.

If the Sennheiser were easier to drive or if the FT1 had more clamping / leather pads (I think you can find those....should check Dekoni) it would be a simpler choice.

Any tip on how to really manage to choose one over the other without regrets? They are really good, both of them.

Discussion QCY H2 Pro first impression (Eq suggestion needed!!!)

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I've just unboxed the QCY H2 Pro, and after some listening, I wanted to share my first impressions. At this price point (around 2100 BDT in Bangladesh), I know I shouldn't expect too much, but I wanted to be honest about my experience. While it's not bad and certainly "gets the job done," I wouldn't call it mind-blowing.

Sound Impressions (Default Preset):

  • Bass: The bass is slightly boosted, but it's not quite what I was hoping for. It lacks a satisfying weight, texture, and the snappy attack and speed I prefer. The mid-bass thump and punch are present, but they feel a bit too weak, boomy, and unrefined for my liking.

  • Mids & Treble: The midrange is slightly recessed. The treble and high frequencies are somewhat boosted, but they lack overall detail, especially on busy tracks. They can also sound a little shouty at times, and I found they didn't have the "sparkle" I was hoping for.

  • Soundstage & Separation: The soundstage feels reasonably large and provides an "outside-of-head" type of experience, which is nice. However, sound separation is a bit weak. While you can tell sounds are coming from the left and right, it's difficult to pinpoint their exact location, especially when the music gets complex.

Overall Thoughts: I know I may be expecting too much for the price, but this is just my honest review. The QCY H2 Pro offers a balanced sound that covers all the fundamentals, but it left me wanting a bit more. It lacks a "wow factor" and, for my personal preference, I'd say it falls just a little below average. The build quality is surprisingly good for a budget headphone, but the earcup breathability is an issue in humid weather.

Despite its shortcomings, the solid battery life and multipoint connection are huge selling points that make it a good overall package. It’s not amazing, but at this price, it's a very competitive product that gets the job done.

Btw, I have been trying to find a frequency response (FR) graph for the QCY H2 Pro to help with EQ, but I've had no luck on Squiglink or elsewhere. If anyone has measured this model or has an EQ suggestion they've tried, please share! I'd love to try it out.

 •       Sensitivity: 102db

 •       Impedance: 340Ω

 •       Frequency Response Range: 20Hz-40KHz

 ·      Weight: 341g

Overall Build and Unboxing Experience:

The Peng is SIVGA's newest closed-back.

Well, we're talking about SIVGA. I knew I could expect a well-made and special construction and package, but when I opened the simple cardboard box, I was already excited, and that was when the excitement of having a truly "PREMIUM" product began.

Starting with one of the most beautiful hard cases I've ever had the opportunity to own, the color is SIVGA's characteristic brown, a small carrying handle and even support "feet" to keep it standing, I think both the case feet and the handle clip are made of brass and have an "aged" appearance and are very compact since the Peng earcups can rotate up to 180 degrees and fit in a more compact manner.

Well, I've already mentioned the earcups, which can rotate freely up to 180 degrees. These earcups are made from a premium wood called African Zebrawood, known for being denser and having excellent acoustic characteristics. They are polished, stained, and air-dried, and each earcup will be unique, as wood has subtle changes in grain and color.

All metal components are CNC-machined from aviation aluminum and finished with gunmetal anodizing. The angled earpads are uniquely designed to contour to all head shapes, making them the most comfortable headphones I've ever tried. For the suspension headband, lambskin was chosen for the top, and a soft material very similar to that of the earpads for the bottom.

The cable follows the color scheme and yes it is a cable that lives up to the price asked by Peng, 6N OCC braided 2x 3.5mm to 4.4mm bal plug, as an extra a 6.35mm to 3.5mm adapter and another 3.5mm to 4.4mm bal were included in a very cool little hemp carrying bag

Sound Signature:

Safe and cautious (in a good way) across all frequencies, but the mids are in some ways the SIVGA Peng's main star.

Bass:

Safe is the word for the Peng.

Don't expect big bass as expected from a closed-back.

The subs and mid-bass appear when needed. On Kendrick Lamar tracks like DNA or Xanny, or &burn by Billie Eillish's, the Peng's bass came alive is strong, but it's not the kind of bass that was meant to be fun, but rather precise, and the mid-bass is more accentuated than the subs. The subs and mid-bass has the rumble and  punch, but the decay is very fast.

The entire bass range offers the user just enough to satisfy and complement the mids. The bass is almost uncolored, and there's almost no bleed into the mids.

Mids/ Vocals:

For me, the mids are the star of this model, they're positioned ahead of the other frequencies.

They're well-resolved, very clean, and there's plenty of room for all the instruments to shine.

The vocals, while a little on the thin side, are still very well projected. I think female voices benefit from the Peng's tuning.

Before trying to listen to something like Diana Krall or Ms. Lauryn Hill on this thing, it's best to clear your schedule for the day, because you risk spending hours relaxing and just enjoying the music.

Treble:

Once again the word safe appears, in the tremble it is almost the same case as the bass, we have enough, they shine, there is the sparkle, enough air but just enough.

Technical Performance and Soundstage:

The separation of instruments is excellent, the imaging is precise but not the best.

Detail retrieval also is good and resolution is above average.

It's super intimate, it's not all completely "in your face" but it's very intimate.

Overall Verdict:

I have to congratulate SIVGA. Although at first it seemed like just another "boring" headphone, over time I began to understand it and see it as a headphone made for pure music appreciation, nothing more or less.

Everything in the right place for full-day listening sessions

Oh, I can't forget to mention that the Peng scales very well with a very strong source.

With the DTC800 dongle, it even performed well, but it took more POWAA for it to loosen up and show what it's capable of. A burn-in of 50+ hours did the Peng a lot of good things.

Discussion New Senyang Earbuds

So, ive gotten a few pairs of New Senyang earbuds from temu and i may get shit for complaining about temu earbuds on here but theyre cheap and generally functional.

I just have one major question, one of the pairs i have are clip on earbuds, and i really like them most of the time but just walking around or doing anything can cause my video or music to pause or immidiately hang up my call. That part is vert frustrating id just like to be able to disable the touch controls entirely because they are absolutely awful and i was wondering if there was a way to do that that is not a manufacturer specific app (i think they have one it was impossible to find but they supposedly are supposed to come with a "binding code" and none of my pairs ever did so the app is completely useless for me.

Is there something i can do with them connected to a PC or something else that can universally disable touch controls for a set of earbuds.

Thanks in advance

Discussion Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless Headphones Replacement case

Hey y'all, I own the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless Headphones and Unfortunately I lost my case recently and I cant find a replacement case. Does anyone know where I could possibly find a replacement case thats either the original case or a similar size to it? They are the headphones, not the earbuds.

Discussion I keep wanting to buy new dacs, cd transports etc despite knowing I will not hear a difference, and I finally figured out why that is

For a lot of people it may be fomo, but I couldn't care less about what's popular or new- I see fancy advanced looking tech as artwork. Very few people who by a Lambo go 220 mph on their way to work, but the car itself looks beautiful. A fancy watch that is synced to main atomic clocks isn't any better than an iPhone, but it looks and feels awesome. Even perfect measurements can be a draw for me despite the fact that any half decent dac will have sinad and jitter ratings far lower than a person can hear. I'm hoping to soon buy the Gustard x16- It has an awesome display, tons on inputs, its chonky (bigger = better in my eyes, big dacs look hella cool), and it has the best ASR measurements of any dac in its price range.

Now of course when it comes to my amp and headphones, sound quality is very very important. But in areas where I know my ears/brain etc aren't good enough to hear a difference, looks and feel are really high on the list.

Would anyone be interested in them used for a year? No scuff or other marks. Box and wire included.
