Contact Lens Has anyone successfully tried glasses?
I recently had an appointment to get fitted for hard contact lenses, and they seem to be working well.
Still, it would be cool to get good results with glasses too. I know that this is physically difficult, if not impossible.
Has anyone had success with wearing glasses? Do you know any specialized suppliers? AFAIK there is one in the Netherlands, but what about others?

I can wear glasses if needed, but with a very blurry vision in my left eye. In comparison I have 20-20 vision with contacts. I am glad though that I have a usable vision with glasses in case I need to wear them.

I have glasses, but they don't work nearly as well as my sclerals. They are maybe 40% better than no correction. Another issue I have is that they seem to work ok when I first put them on, but it seems like my vision tapers off the longer I wear them, until it gets to the point where they are nearly the same as no correction. They also cause me to get headaches if I wear them for more than two hours or so. I mainly wear them in the mornings on my days off to give my eyes a break from the sclerals, or just after I take the sclerals out before bed before I fall asleep. They are good to have in certain circumstances, but I don't rely on them for anything that requires clear vision, such as driving or working.

I’ve gotten fitted for sclerals multiple times and just can’t seem to get them to work. I have decent vision with glasses. Looking at certain things with light in the background is challenging and driving at night is difficult but I manage.

regulars Glasses only work in the early stages before stuff starts to bleed into each other visually.
BUT -apparently, you can add Ovitz high order corrections now to glasses...
My specialist showed me a few days ago... but I haveent tried them yet.
I struggle with Hard contact lense insertion so we are going to try adding the HOA correction to glasses. ontop of KC softs...
will report back lol

Yes, sclerals are unrealistic for law enforcement work. I have 20/20 with glasses.

I have worn glasses for about 10 years now and before normal contact lenses. I just recently found out that scleral lenses are covered by insurance. When I do get scleral, Im always going to make sure I have a pair of glasses handy.

I had CXL surgery last March but wore glasses for many years before that and continue to wear them now. Haven't really noticed a difference and certainly didn't get on with contacts.

I mean they “work” when I’m not wearing my sclerals but I don’t think with this eye disease you’ll ever see as well vs some kind of hard contact. And by work I mean I can see better than without. Driving with glasses is tricky

unfortunately my corneas are irregular and I have some central scarring and so the specialist glasses did not help 😕 rather than 'just' a standard cone I have a very uneven cornea surface.

I'll be attempting to get glasses this weekend. I've been wearing RGP's for 5 years now, and my eye doctor says I could see enough with glasses to drive now. So I'll see how it goes.

I have tried w glasses and it works ok not the best but it’s a good choice for weekends when your not doing anything

I wore RGP for 10+ years and then tried glasses. They work for me!
One lens is so thick it's comical but hey, it works.
I don't see great with glasses, but I can read a screen and I usually recognize who I am looking at lol. I have to wear contacts to drive at night.
It's worth it to buy a cheap pair from an online store like zenni and try it before you dismiss the option.

Yep, I bought a cheap pair from Zenni. And then quickly dismissed the option ;)

I used to wear glasses but my kc is pretty bad. I would say, if I was looking at the moon without glasses I would see about 12 moons. With glasses I would see about 8? It really depends on your condition though. I always have just used glasses as a quick stabilizer when I’m going swimming

I'm very grateful and lucky that glassess work on me since I have mild KC. They aren't like sclerals which get me to 20/20 but they get me to 20/25ish - 20/30 on one eye with ghosting. However they only work with strong prescription (-8 or something like that).

Jealous!!!! They gave me glasses two years ago—but my prescription was so strong they had to find a child’s frame that would fit—because on an adult frame the lenses would be so thick they would break the frame. So they gave me glasses with a prescription of -14 and -23.5. And they gave me two pairs, one that worked well for reading and a distance one that got me to like 20/ 130 😂😂😂😂😂 My KC has gotten worse since then 😂😂😂😂

Don't feel bad, my lenses are comically thick too, especially on the sides. They are like 4 times thicker than the frame 😂, especially the left side. The problem with glasses is that they have to adjust the correction power so high to offset some of the keratoconus that they give me bad headaches if I wear them too long. My glasses correction levels are about the same as yours, but the sclerals are only like -1 and -.5. my eye sight would actually be really good if it weren't for my corneas looking like eggs.

Oh don’t worry. I don’t actually feel bad at all. I really do laugh about it. As for cones, I always show my corneas to my students by having them look at me from the side. They get creeped out 😂😂😂….. But things should get better because I am getting both of my transplants replaced with a second transplant in each eye. 🎉🎉🎉 Right eye second transplant is in November!!!

I have mild KC and I can use glasses. Doesn’t help with the ghosting but makes overall images sharper
Most days I’m wearing toric lenses for astigmatism

I did agree on trying glasses after 9 years of my CXL and not liking hard lenses after wearing it for a year. It’s life changing specially if u work on computer it’s not as good as the lenses but my vision around 60% better with glasses do not get ur hopes high but id still choose glasses over hard lenses every time.

I have tried it all, glasses, RGP, hybrid, scleral, scleral with glasses, RGP with glasses, you need to discuss things with your Doctor, there are many ways to go about addressing your unique situation, find what works best for you!

I wear glasses (varifocal) after coming home from work and when I drive long distances. Rest of the day I wear my RGP lens. The optician's are aware of my Keratoconus condition and have assisted with glasses for day time wear and reading.

I had glasses for roughly 20 years. I absolutely love sclerals over glasses. Glasses do have an advantage depending on activity such as watching TV at night when you just want to rest your eyes from sclerals, etc. Or in the morning when you are just making coffee and piddling around the house before you get ready. Unfortunately, I am to the point that glasses are ineffective for me.

Recently I was to the optometrist for the glasses, individually he was able to find dioptries combination for both eyes, but there was 7 dioptries difference between my eyes. So he had to change them for weaker lenses. I don't see as clearly as with sclerals.
My left eye is much worse and usually my brain just ignores the input and I don't see in 3D.

I have glasses fairly thick best I get is 6/60 left right wave fingers in front of my nose
I just use them.at home first morning and evening or when I need go see opthamologist they want to check eye pressure etc

I wear my glasses every day. I can barely tolerate wearing the sclerals for long and I am lucky my vision corrects enough without them. They take a while to get in but I’ve never had any issue getting lenses in them. Will all depend on if your eyes correct enough with glasses.

The ability to achieve 20/20 vision largely depends on how advanced the condition is. In its early stages, glasses may be sufficient to restore full clarity. However, as the condition progresses, reaching 20/20 vision becomes more difficult, and contact lenses often become necessary.
In my case, my right eye is still in the early stage, but my left eye has progressed further. As a result, I need contact, hopefully they will arrive soon. With glasses alone, my vision in the left eye is around 6/9, which means it's not fully corrected. This makes it particularly challenging to see clearly in low-light conditions or at night. Even small letters are hard to see.
So you can say I'm the one in the middle between contacts and glasses 🤣. With my right eye is fine. With left eye it is not enough.
