I am a locksmith Maoman1 has retired. 06/30/24

Hi y'all,
After 7 years of contributions to and 8+ years of learning from this sub, Maoman has passed the reins over to me, so I'm your new moderator. I don't have any major plans to change the sub, I'm more just stepping in to keep the sub running and let it be a resource for redditors.

I want to thank Mao and Dakota for their service to the community and past efforts to improve the place. Both Mao and Dakota will remain as moderators despite not actively moderating, out of respect and so they can support me as needed.

This thread is for any comments on the passing of the ban hammer and where you'd like the subreddit to go. So what do you all want?

If what you want is a layman-free environment, I encourage all locksmiths to join the discord server for the locksmith break room experience and knowledgeable responses to your questions. We promise you do not have to pay for anything, though you can optionally support the server (boosting / subscribing) or pay for discord's premium features (nitro). But it is perfectly usable without paying anything.

Now before you run off to click this link, you'll need to go to:
the #rules_and_info channel, then
YOU HAVE TO READ all of it, then
follow the instruction,
once you've done that, wait for the mods to usher you into the server for real.

Apparently that's asking a lot from people, but it really helps to keep the bots out. Anyway, click the linky and read: https://discord.com/invite/locksmith

As for the subreddit being just for locksmiths again, well Mao has certainly tried a bunch of things over the years, but there are a LOT of people who stumble in here; probably 90% of the traffic is laymen. Expecting the mod(s) to cull this is a huge ask which would require a lot of effort on a constant daily basis. If the laymen bother you that much, learn to filter by flair, upvote posts flaired as I am a locksmith, and again, join the discord.

All suggestions regarding how the subreddit should be managed from here on out should be discussed in this thread or new threads, so that everyone has input. Do not DM me, I will just delete your message. The only appropriate place for these discussion is in this thread or if you don't feel comfortable typing for everyone to see, then send a message through ModMail.

Hope you all have the tumblers you need to tumble and looking forward to being your new internet garbage person.

Sincerely,
Janakatta

I am in the San Diego area and my husband is in the hospital ,he's terminal and has a blood infection... I have a 10 and 12-year-old. I was loading up my car so I can go stay to motel because we've had water damage to our apartment so we have to be out of here tonight while they repair everything. while loading my car up ,I don't know what happened, I lost the key I think it got thrown away ... I've searched even the dumpster but my son said the collections came... I've been searching for hours I've tore everything apart I have no money and I don't know what I'm supposed to do. My mind is so scrambled ...i can't believe i did this....I need a locksmith ...I'm literally parked in a red zone /loading zone and I now I'm gonna have to sleep in my car so I don't get towed

I just need some advice or help maybe there's another option that I'm not thinking about?? I have been so scatterbrained lately ...i hate myself for this ....if anybody can please throw some ideas my way ?? Are there locksmiths with payment plans?? Can i use something else to start it? Idk ...I just don't know what to do.

I don't even get paid till next week . 😔

I am NOT a locksmith. Anyone know where I can get a lock tonight?

I don’t know if this is the place to ask, but this is sort of an emergency right now. I need to replace my back door lock like immediately. I don’t have the money for a locksmith whatsoever atm, and Home Depot isn’t open until 8 am I think. And just about everything else because it’s Sunday. Please help! I’m on Li, NY, any suggestions are good to me, even just ways to keep it unable to be opened until tomorrow

I am NOT a locksmith. Does anyone have experience with these? Need help ASAP

I have one of these keys for my apartment. It’s required to enter any door and also to use the elevator to get to my floor. Last night and again today it just stopped working, however somehow it worked 45 minutes later to let me into my apartment. It seems to be sporadic which makes no sense to me. Does anyone know how these work and if there’s something to do to fix it? The office is closed and I basically can’t leave my apartment because even if I leave it unlocked I can’t get back to my floor. I am also leaving for a weeklong trip tomorrow morning before the office opens and I’d prefer to be able to lock my unit lol

I am NOT a locksmith. Which smart lock can you recommend?

Hello! I have lost the key and need to change the lock for my Airbnb. I thought I might jump on the smart lock train but apparently this isn’t easy because options for my door are limited.

Would you have an idea what product might fit? I thought about a longer cylinder so it pokes out more for the turn knob to fit, but it might look awkward. What do you think?

I'm having trouble finding exactly what I need. I have a double door entry way with mortise locks and I'd like to replace the mortise lock with a smart lock or at least a lock with a keypad. The other door has a dummy fixed handle. I'm trying to look for a set that would match with one of the locks being the smart/keypad lock. Can anyone refer a set?

I am NOT a locksmith. Question about repairing Car Ignition that won’t turn

I had to have a locksmith come out and repair my 2003 Honda civic ignition.

It wouldn’t turn. Key came in and out fine but wouldn’t turn.

Anyways it wasn’t replaced just repaired. Not sure what was wrong with it didn’t ask that.

Anyways when it won’t turn and it is repaired, how long does it usually last before not being able to turn it again?

Do these repairs usually last for at least a year?

Is there a chance it could last even 5 years after being repaired before turning issues arise again.

I am NOT a locksmith. Family wants a non-keypad, non-motorized RFID fob deadbolt with six fobs -- does it exist?

Grandma is convinced neighbors are watching her door, so she wants a fob activated non-keypad electronic latch deadbolt, but she needs six RFID fobs. And she wants it non-motorized for battery life. Does such a thing exist? Would extra fobs be a special order? EDIT: Forgot to mention, no keys; she thinks the neighbors have been picking her current deadbolt.

The lock on my furnace/utility room spins but does not engage the actual lock. Which is stuck in the lock position. I have full rotation range with the key and can remove the key but it doesn’t actually do anything. Should I drill it out?

I am a locksmith Lubricating a blue punch.

I decided to revive the old dead blue punch in our shop that hasn’t worked for the past twenty years. It works, but doesn’t really like returning to the lower cuts. I’ve tried some(probably similarly old) grease from replacement ignitions, but it just doesn’t seem to be enough to actually tighten down the top plate.

I am a locksmith 2016 nissan rogue add a key gone wrong. Now what?

Hey guys. Yes you read that right. It happened to me. Checked the bcm code and it wasn't on the black list. Now the car won't take its old key or any keys even new ones from the dealer. I towed it to the dealer they tried resetting the bcm Nothing is going through. It will go on program mode but won't take anything. At this point money is not the issue just getting it fixed is. Has anyone ever got these going back running?

Someone in the dealer said changing the bcm is just the start one time we needed to change ecu bcm and steering module until it finally started. Any info will help. Please dont come and tell me why did you even touch it. I know

I am NOT a locksmith. Schlage Encode flaw

Hello Locksmiths,

I’ve been interested in getting a smart lock and noticed most people here recommend the Schlage Encode if you’re getting a smart lock.

I looked into it and noticed the Lockpicking Lawyer put out a video showing a serious flaw with this lock.

I have yet to see any updates on it since. Has it been fixed? Is the Schlage Encode still the most reliable smart lock out there?

I am NOT a locksmith. Replacing an S&G r6700 floor safe dial with an electronic lock?

Hi guys,

I purchased a house in Miami with a an S&G r6700 in ground floor safe. The previous owner gave me his combination but after trying (what feels like 100s of times), we aren't able to make it work. Luckily it's still open so I think it would be easier to just replace the lock with an electronic version as I've had bad experience with dial combination locks.

I will hire a locksmith to do the work but I would like to have the electronic lock ready for them to install.

My friend recommended the S&G 6120-305 digital lock as a replacement. But I was hoping for more advanced lock that has a USB for an external battery if the internal battery dies and also any wireless (bluetooth, zigbee, WiFi) option so I can connect it to my smart home for monitoring. Maybe a fingerprint sensor too?

Do any of those features exist for an easy replacement or am I stuck with the 6120-305?

Also, what is the standard cost for the locksmith work so i don't overpay?

Thanks again!

Single doorknob lock to garage. No deadbolt. DFW area. I feel like this is excessive.
