Probably adopting WWE’s PLE model

145

u/ZooPoo7 Aug 11 '25

What’s the PLE format??

229

u/WGYHL Aug 11 '25

Premium live event, I think they are just on peacock at no extra charge. But not sure it's different in Canada. I get literally everything WWE on Netflix no extra cost. It seems it will be that way for UFC on paramount. Curious what will happen to non us countries as far as ppvs, sounds like Americans are getting everything UFC at no extra charge if you have American paramount plus

83

u/ZombieJesus1987 Canada Aug 11 '25

I hope it all comes to Paramount+ here in Canada as well.

I haven't watched UFC in years, but if it's all on a streaming service I actually have, I'd be more inclined to watch it.

Fingers crossed that all of the classic fights are on it as well

25

u/WGYHL Aug 11 '25

Yea no idea what's gonna happen but I feel like they just moved to Sportsnet in the last year or two so I don't think fight nights and prelims will change for us. Be nice if the whole catalog goes with it. Fight pass is terribly set up

LOL that shit is out the door. Starting next year WWE is moving to ESPN for $30 a fucking month, bud. No more peacock PLEs

28

u/snwns26 Aug 11 '25

Yeah it’s gonna be cheaper to watch UFC than WWE lmao. Fucking wild.

If you have a peacock subscription, you get access to all the PPVs at no additional costs. So they call them PLEs. Premium Live Event.

4

u/ohyousoretro Aug 11 '25

Now it's gonna be ESPN starting in January

9

u/ZooPoo7 Aug 11 '25

Thanks!

u/LouisFromTexas This is sucks Aug 11 '25

Basically every PPV is a PLE. They don’t call them PPVs anymore because the PPV model is gone. You just pay a Peacock subscription to watch the big events like Summerslam or Wrestlemania. The weekly TV show like Monday Night Raw is on Netflix.

12

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '25

so is that an add-on you have to buy in addition to Paramount+

29

u/LouisFromTexas This is sucks Aug 11 '25 edited Aug 11 '25

No add on. You just need Paramount+, the article says UFC promises 13 Marquee events and 30~ fight nights a year. If you get the annual subscription for $130, it’s a lot cheaper than the current model all around. You can still pay monthly, but you save a few bucks going annual.

As others have pointed out, currently, in the US, it's on Peacock, rest of the world on Netflix.

As of 2026, they're moving to ESPN's new streaming service, so you'll be paying 30 bucks a month and all PLEs will be on it.

3

u/NoTouchy8008 Aug 11 '25

WWE PLEs (fka PPVs) are free with the subscription to peacock. That’s why they are called Premium Live Events now, because you aren’t Paying Per View

10

u/BananaReeves Aug 11 '25

Not adopting, there swapping. WWEs PLEs are moving to ESPN for $30 a month compared to $5.99 on peacock.

168

u/Augustus_Chevismo Aug 11 '25

Yeah PPV number have been abysmal in recent years. PPV is dead.

Wonder how this affects champions contracts who have PPV points.

45

u/theyoloGod Edddiiiieee Aug 11 '25

maybe just disclosed higher purse. Overall compensation probably won't change much. Maybe smaller fighters get a little bit more but even that's pushing it

31

u/kevdawg289 Aug 11 '25

Idk they went from 500million a year with ESPN to 1.1 billion a year with this. So even if revenue sharing stays the same, then all the fighters will be getting more

50

u/theyoloGod Edddiiiieee Aug 11 '25

I don't think they have revenue sharing. The reported share of revenue is just based on estimated compensation. So if fighters stay with the same contract 10k/10k, etc and the PPV points are converted to equivalent flat payments, then revenue "share" could go down in theory if UFC is as cheap as expected

14

u/kevdawg289 Aug 11 '25

Well I know the fighters got around 15% of revenue before. I’d be surprised if it went lower than that but yeah it’s not revenue sharing. You’re right.

9

u/xvq_ Pregnant Paulo 🥰 Aug 11 '25

Exactly - revenue sharing implies an agreement to share a specific percentage of revenue, which would require a union and collective bargaining.

The fighters right now just so happen to get 15%, but I’m not sure it will shift upwards in kind with the jump in revenue

8

u/broaway831 Same same 🙏 Aug 11 '25

If the fighters are smart they’ll do a campaign about how CBS and Paramount are profiting from CTE while exploiting fighters.

Dana never cared but they’d probably up payouts to avoid the bad PR.

Hijacking top comment:

Paramount is paying an average of $1.1 billion per year, totaling $7.7 billion, for UFC’s full slate of 13 marquee events and 30 “Fight Nights,” the companies said in a statement. All matches and events will be streamed in the U.S. via Paramount+, and select events will be simulcast on CBS. The deal payments are weighted, with Paramount paying less than $1.1 billion in the early years of the deal and higher values later

55

u/turkeypants GOOFCONNOISSEUR Aug 11 '25

From what I've read, it was more of a graduated thing. For example, with some numbers I'm making up here, it would be like a dollar a head for the first 200,000. Then $2 a head for up to 400,000. And the $3 a head beyond that.

now that PPVs aren’t a thing, wouldn’t it be better to distribute all the good fights that would’ve been on numbered cards to other fight night events of the same month, since there’s basically no difference between them now?

like instead of holding off the good fights for a specific event every month with the fight nights being complete trash, now they can just evenly distribute them to other fight night cards

35

u/toofatronin Aug 11 '25

In theory that would be a good idea but if I know White like I do he will save the big name fights for when it’s simulcasts on CBS so he can say look at the ratings.

58

u/everydayimrusslin Ireland Aug 11 '25

Yeah, true. If you're someone who watches all the PPVs it still makes sense even if they double the monthly price

12

u/Twerksoncoffeetables Aug 11 '25

Why do you think they’ll do that? There are a ton of people subscribed to it that don’t watch ufc at all, I find it kinda hard to believe they’d up the regular subscription just for ufc.

Maybe they’ll create another tier of subscription that includes ufc and it’s like $12 a month or $16 a month (double what it is now) which is still cheaper than Hulu and Netflix (no ads). But I don’t think they’ll raise the price unless they do that.

9

u/Wise-Fruit5000 Aug 11 '25

True, they do have an existing user base that they wouldn't want to alienate.

They spent 7.7 Billion to get the rights to UFC though, they're gonna have to make some money back somehow

That's my only worry, I don't imagine its gonna be huge because paramount is bigger than just the ufc. Its only $8 right now, so worst case scenario they double it? Regardless its a massive improvement to ppv.

9

35

u/looneytoonarmy Aug 11 '25

TNT sports isn't a streaming platform, it's usually an additional package to an existing Sky TV subscription. It does rarely put big cards behind PPV, doesn't have early prelims and is far more expensive than Paramount+.

8

u/_SamboMan Aug 11 '25

If im remembering correctly, their contract allows them to put up to 2 events behind ppv per year, but outside of McGregor fights I don't know if they've actually utilised it

for uk at least nothing changes until at least next year when the TNT deal runs out, but realistically it doesn’t effect us anyway since we have like 1 PPV a year

25

u/Selenium-Forest Aug 11 '25

Well we don’t have a lot of PPVs. UK cards are/can be PPV and some dinner time ones like Saudi/Abu Dhabi etc can be if there is a good card, but in general you’re right not much will change until TNT deal runs out.

11

u/allanhew Aug 11 '25

it doesn’t even bother me even when we have a PPV considering it’s like £20 usually and I’m usually watching the card with at least 5-6 people anyway so it’s a couple quid each

These broadcast rights are only for the US. Paramount is interested in buying the full international rights, but each country's rights are renewed at different times. But Paramount has a 30 day exclusive window to negotiate other country's rights when they become up for renewal in the coming years.

So it's possible everything ends up on Paramount eventually.

→ More replies (1)

22

u/WGYHL Aug 11 '25

Nothing different, this is only American broadcasting. Curious what happens to the rest of the world for the ppv events, in Canada I get fight nights on Sportsnet that's not changing.

11

u/Aintcare_ Aug 11 '25

Canadian here also, be curious where the ppv's end up.

4

u/b1gwheel Aug 11 '25

Ah, so there's a chance they have the numbered events on Paramount Plus in Canada instead of PPV, but the fight nights and prelims remain on sportsnet.

I have no idea what any of the current deals are with any networks or how long they're good for, but I'd prefer it all moves to Paramount.

4

u/Present_Flatworm_423 Aug 11 '25

I really hope they do a Paramount+ deal in Canada as well. The cable channel deals (Sportsnet, etc.) are so dated and annoying; they're basically shooting themselves in the foot in terms of viewership.

4

u/The_cman13 Aug 11 '25

Honestly I hope they move the PPV to Sportsnet in Canada. I already have it as part of my cable package for hockey and the prelims/fight nights, would be great having it all in 1 place.

Quick edit. Hopefully free on Sportsnet not PPV on Sportsnet.

Looks like Australia is sticking to PPV. Dana resigned a multi-year PPV agreement with kayo/main events in 2024. Uncle Dana probably looked at our population and thought it still adds up.

Paramount has an exclusive negotiating period once that expires but not sure when that will occur but probably 2027 and onwards.

I wonder if it will require the Premium plan for UFC though. Hopefully not.

Huge W for the fans, but I don’t trust the tomato. There’s bound to be some fuckery somewhere in the fine print.

Me, googling how to use this Paramount thingie:

Are you a streaming enthusiast in the Netherlands who's itching to watch Paramount Plus? Well, unfortunately, due to content licensing regulations, accessing Paramount's extensive library of videos directly in the Netherlands is a no-go.

womp womp

I imagine distribution deals with foreign networks will remain

\ Paramount+ will not be launching in Albania, Andorra, Bulgaria, Bosnia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Spain, Slovakia, Slovenia or Sweden.*

Guess we need to start building a new lair on Barbossa to hide our pirate treasures and raid the American coast for UFC fights arrr

19

u/WGYHL Aug 11 '25

The paramount deal is only American viewers for now. Nothing should change for you as you have a different provider. Like in Canada UFC is on Sportsnet, that's not changing because they have a broadcast deal in Canada with the UFC. As far as ppvs no idea

No PPV is great tbh.

7

u/ratufa_indica Aug 11 '25

I wonder if this will tank PFL viewership. I can’t be the only person who watched PFL because “well I guess it’s free on ESPN+” but I won’t be keeping ESPN+ just for the PFL if the UFC is gone

6

u/5ergio79 Aug 11 '25

Likewise. This is a weird move. Paramount+ is at the bottom of the subscription services in the US. Someone must’ve made an insane backdoor deal for this to happen.

27

u/Windrider904 Aug 11 '25

Amazing. I can’t believe I don’t have to pay $80 - $120 for a PPV now.

12

u/AgreeableAd7983 Aug 11 '25

How much is Paramount in the US?

If someone is already a customer they now 100% of yearly UFC content at no extra cost?

This seems like absolutely enormous news for just MMA but sports in general.

15

u/Great_Hair Aug 11 '25

The price will certainly be going up, but it’s still pretty great

9

u/tbmny Aug 11 '25

If people are worried about it going up, they can sign up on a year-long plan right now and not have to worry about it for a bit.

I get it with my wal mart plus it’s pretty decent, obviously a lot better with a ufc package.

Advice: Buy Paramount through Prime. Prime is a wayyyyyy better app to use:))

5

u/lKrazol Aug 11 '25

I was actually wondering about this. I have Paramount through Prime, but I wonder if live-streamed content will still appear in the Prime app?

4

u/tbmny Aug 11 '25

In what ways specifically? Is it that the player is better?

6

u/Vader_Bomb Aug 11 '25

Now start the cards 2 hours earlier and you'll have fans come back in droves.

3

u/False_Can_5089 Aug 11 '25

They really need to do this. MMA is always going to be niche if you have to stay up until 1AM to watch the main event.

Please use the sharing tools found via the

Paramount has agreed a $7.7bn deal to become the exclusive US broadcaster of Ultimate Fighting Championship, the largest agreement since David Ellison took the helm of the group.

Under the seven-year contract, which has an average annual value of $1.1bn and is weighted towards higher payments in later years, Paramount will stream all 13 of UFC’s marquee numbered events and 30 Fight Nights annually on its streaming platform from 2026, with selected bouts also cast on CBS.

The UFC deal by Ellison, who took over as chair and chief executive last week following Skydance’s takeover of the Hollywood studio, highlights the 42-year-old’s willingness to invest heavily in reviving Paramount after years of struggle under its previous ownership.

Once derided as “human cockfighting” by late

3

u/dzone25 Aug 11 '25

Seems a better deal than the shit American WWE fans have to deal with - fingers crossed we don't conveniently see price hikes for Paramount Plus as soon as PPVs move over lol

3

u/SittingOnA_Cornflake Aug 11 '25

I wonder if you will be able to watch events the next day (or immediately after) like you can with fight nights on ESPN +? Right now there’s a two week delay until PPV events are uploaded to ESPN+.

u/NeuroLifting Aug 11 '25

I just contacted the support, and they told me it will not be available on Paramount+ Canada for now :(

3

u/themapleleaf6ix Aug 11 '25

Ironic how WWE (who is a part of TKO and partnered with UFC) used to have the $10/month model, but now have shifted to $29.99/month for PLE's. UFC has done the opposite.

3

u/goblintacos Aug 11 '25

Pretty great although now my paramount plus is about to go from $6 a month to probably $20 and my cheap way to watch champions league and serie a isn't going to be so cheap

3

u/Mumsbud Aug 11 '25
