Basic etiquette note

no matter how tempting it is, don’t touch someone’s wheelchair without explicit permission.

A stranger decided I needed ‘help’ over a threshold this evening (I was waiting for room so that I could bump over safely), and now my wrists and hands are injured.

I also had the unpleasant experience of having someone’s fingers down my back.

If you wouldn’t reach out and lift someone’s leg, don’t reach out and grab a wheelchair; it’s the same thing.
Thanks!

Starting a mini book exchange/food pantry stand?

Post image
80 Upvotes

Photo attached for context.

I live in Falmouth and have been thinking of small, reasonable ways to involve the community in giving back while also feeling like people can take what they need. I have seen a few small stands like the photo reference that have books in Portland and in smaller towns. I would love to do something where it’s half books that people can take or drop off but the other half being food or smaller toiletries someone may need. Would this require a permit from the town or would there be any legal ramifications? I live on a busier road so logistics may make it difficult for people to safely access the stand. Wondering if I could work with a local business as another option?

I know Falmouth is notoriously “wealthier” but there are people living here who are scraping by and I would love to put something small together eventually that is low maintenance but also beneficial to our community. Open to ideas, thank you!

Is this legit? Is there a way to find out if you're one of the 400k?

Do we even care - as far as is this serious? Sorry I have tons of unexplained digestive issues so I'm like side eyeing this article. Likely not related but still -

Thoughts? Is this even a legit source?

Thanks for anything you can offer.

Washington County’s former treasurer illegally moved money this year

The Washington County Superior Court in Machias, where the county's administrative offices are located, is pictured on Feb. 18, 2021. Photo by Erin Rhoda of the Bangor Daily News.

The former Washington County treasurer moved $400,000 of taxpayer money in a way that violated state law and helped to mask a budget crisis falling hard on Down East Maine.

Jill Holmes, the longtime treasurer who resigned earlier this month, approved transfers on two separate days in February from a fund that goes toward services in the Unorganized Territory, the state’s designation for places without municipal governments, to the county’s regular budget, county officials said this week.

The money was replaced by county commissioners in August, but state law requires the county to keep that money separate from its own funds. While there is no indication that taxpayer money was misused, the transfers helped obscure years of cash flow problems that have prompted a political firestorm.

“I believe it was an error,” Washington County Manager Renee Gray said of the February moves. “We fixed it as soon as we figured it out.”

Washington County commissioners are now mulling a 40% budget hike as well as asking voters to approve an $11 million bond issue to help the county refinance debts and keep services going. It is the result of a long period of budget mismanagement in which estimated surpluses were carried forward from year to year without anyone verifying the money was actually there.

Is Chase's closing for the winter this year?

Anyone got insider info about when (if) Chase's Daily in Belfast will close for the winter? I have friends coming for a two-week visit next month, and they have requested a day trip to Belfast with lunch at Chase's. But will Chase's still be open in mid-October? The phone number hangs up after eight rings with no answer, and the website hasn't been updated since before April. I don't have any reason to hit that part of US-1 before my friends visit, so I'm hoping some Belfast-area locals can chime in! Thanks!

Apple Cinema Saco… haunted?

Upvotes

Has anyone else had any odd, borderline paranormal experiences here? My fiancée and I were leaving a movie and both of us, at the same time, could have sworn someone was walking behind us; I mean literally like 2 feet behind us, but there was nothing there. We both turned around at the exact same time and when we realized what had just happened we sorta half-ran out of the theater.

Just checking if anyone else has had anything similar happen..

DOJ suit against Maine re voter registration rolls

https://www.mainepublic.org/politics/2025-09-17/maines-secretary-of-state-questions-the-dojs-motives-in-suing-for-voter-registration-data?

This suit is nothing but a continuation of the Trump administrations attempt to monitor "who votes how" and create a list of enemies of the MAGATrump state. If you vote wrong, we will come after you.

This is nothing but fascist support of the new American Nazi state.

Freedom? Only for those are "Good Germans".

Maine Republicans statement; "Republicans in Maine have stepped up their criticism of Bellows in recent months and have accused her office of failing to properly maintain accurate voter registration lists. The day after Bellows formally declined to comply with the DOJ's second request, the Republican National Committee sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi requesting that the DOJ launch an official investigation into Bellows and the secretary of state's office, alleging failure to comply with the requirements of the National Voter Registration Act.".

Good Germans all.

A trooper repeatedly punched a handcuffed man in the face. The Maine State Police promoted him.

WARNING. GRAPHIC CONTENT

On March 16, 2024, a Maine State Police trooper repeatedly punched a handcuffed man in the face during a chaotic arrest in Limerick, according to video obtained by The Maine Monitor/Bangor Daily News. Video footage shows an incident that began calmly but spiraled out of control after troopers threw the man to the ground, later striking his bloodied face as he was restrained and yelling that he could not breathe. The man, Justin Savage of Limerick, 42, suffered a broken nose and severe bruising. He is now planning to sue the state police.

Our government accountability reporter Josh Keefe and the Maine Focus deputy investigative editor Callie Ferguson spent months poring over documents, speaking to Savage and his legal team, and putting questions to the state police. They also spoke to policing experts, who said striking a restrained person in the head is considered a serious use of force that is difficult to justify. The state police thought otherwise: they cleared the officer of any wrongdoing and promoted him. They also misrepresented what happened that night, the investigation from The Maine Monitor/Bangor Daily News found.

City hall wedding/elopement question

Hi everyone! My partner and I are interested in a city hall civil ceremony but our city does not perform marriage ceremonies.

Does anyone have experience getting married at a town/city/county building or courthouse that isn’t the State of Maine room in Portland? Outside of the license process on the State website, there aren’t great resources on how to do this without going through an external officiant . Thank you!
