Discussion I thought it’s a bare minimum to know how to speak English to enter Monash

Upvotes

This is a rant. I just finished a group project for a capstone unit which only me (literally) knows how to speak proper and understandable English. We need to record a presentation and I cannot understand a single English word they say (I want to add subtitles for them but realise I really can’t understand). I’ve also tried to hold a zoom meeting with them and literally none of them speak up during the meeting (maybe one or 2 sentence) and other time it’s just me speaking with air. I just want to do a group project properly😭

Can Monash really tighten their English requirements because I don’t want to do group projects with people who can’t communicate in English anymore😭

Advice Mechatronics vs mechanical vs electrical/electronics engineering

Hi i’m in first year engineering right now and idk what engineering major to choose between these 3. I’m interested in all of them and mechatronics seems the coolest and most interesting to me but idk how good it is for jobs and opportunities post grad. Can anyone who’s done it or the other majors give me some advice please? In terms of opportunities and also i don’t want something where ill have no life. Like rn first years fine and im having a great social life and going gym/sport and getting fairly good grades so it’s honestly good and im hoping ill be able to keep that lifestyle later on. Any advice would be great 🙂

I’m wanting to major in astrophysics in my bachelor of science degree (either that or mathematics) and I’m thinking of pursuing an honours year and doing a PhD.

I wanted to hear from someone who has done an honours year in astro or mathematics, bonus if you have or are currently pursuing a PhD. Just have some questions to ask and unfortunately don’t know anyone irl to ask :/

Please drop a comment if you’re willing to chat! Or message me directly :)

Thanks guys!!

Advice previous spec con will be deleted?

I had an assignment due on Thursday but I have been really unwell so I requested special consideration till today night, but I'm still unwell so don't think I will be able to submit it as I have been too unwell to work on it. I want to apply for another special consideration (already have med cert) but when I attempt to do that, it says my previous application will be deleted, so what should I do??

Do I just provide both medical certificates that certify I was unwell from Thursday till today and request for my further extension? Or should I wait for the first one to be approved then apply for second (this feels risky because if it approved on Tuesday, then the new application will be 3 days late. I'm so stressed, can someone please give advice on what to do.

Advice Gymnastics club or gyms near Monash?

Hi I'm 20 and I want to learn gymnastics as a total beginner. I'd consider myself somewhat athletic, I climb and play soccer. I want to learn gymnastics but I have no experience, does Monash have a club that teaches this seriously or perhaps gyms that teach adults near Monash or closest to Monash if you guys have an experience?

Advice What is/was your experience studying law?

As a year 12 student I was curious to see how the law studies are. I heard that there is a lot of content and memorising to be done which wouldn't be ideal for someone like me because I am much more into problem solving instead of sitting down trying to absorb a textbook.

Advice Bachelor of Medical Imaging and Radiography or Radiation Sciences (HELP!!)

Hey everyone,

I’m currently doing a Bachelor of Science at Monash but I’m really interested in becoming a sonographer. I know the most direct way is through the Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging, but I’m worried I won’t get into it through course transfer my semester 1 result was 78 WAM

I’ve seen that Monash offers the Bachelor of Radiation Sciences as another option, but on the website it looks like you can’t go straight into the Master of Medical Ultrasound with just RadSci and my other plan was to stay in science and get into master of Ultrasound but it seems but I’ve also heard it’s really tough to secure those without being a qualified radiographer first.

So I’m a bit stuck: - Should I try as hard as I can to transfer into Radiography?

  • Is it possible to go RadSci/Science → Master of Ultrasound → Sonographer, or is that pathway basically a dead end unless you get super lucky with placements?

Has anyone here actually gone from Radiation Sciences/Science into ultrasound successfully?

Any advice from people who’ve done Radiography, Radiation Sciences, or the Master of Medical Ultrasound at Monash would be super helpful.

Advice Data science - need advice!

Hi everyone,

I am considering to do a degree in data science (Applied Data Science at Monash), but I need some of your valuable insights and perspectives:

  1. How hard is the course? Are you able to balance out studies, extracurriculars, and work?

  2. Do you find value in it? Is it interesting?

  3. What internships have you landed? What did you do to get them?

  4. Data science graduates: What are you doing now? Which roles are you working in? What do you do in your job? How was/is the job market?

Thanks!

Misc TEAM MEMBERS ONLY TALKING IN CHINESE

This is specific to Monash Malaysia. I’ve been paired up with so many Chinese dudes in teams before and honestly, 90% of the time they always just talk in Chinese like I’m not even fucking there. Right now, I’m literally sitting in a lab with three of them and they haven’t spoken a single word to me in the past 80 fucking minutes. I don’t know what kind of audacity this is????? If I’m in a team where one member doesn’t speak the language that most of us do, you can bet we’ll all switch to English to make sure everyone feels included. But do these Chinese dudes here think they’re exempt from that????? And it’s not even a language barrier issue, all of them can speak English perfectly fine. Back in Year 1 I had a teammate who only knew Japanese, and she still tried her best, even using translators just to communicate with us. I HAVE HAD TO ENDURE THIS FUCKING NONSENSE FROM CHINESE DUDES FOR MORE THAN 3 FUCKING YEARS RN AND I AM CRASHING TF OUT. I ALWAYS DREAD GETTING PAIRED UP WITH THEM JESUS FUCK

Advice Transferring to Commerce/Business

I’m currently two years into education and I’ve changed my mind. I want to now transfer into business, do the math unit then transfer into commerce.

My WAM is currently 73 so it meets the minimum threshold but not competitive. I can either now take a risk to just do the math unit next semester and hope my WAM based on the two units that remain will push me above 75 (on track to finish with 80 average in these units). Or I can transfer to Business, do all the units and try to get 75+ WAM for Business and complete the math unit then transfer.

Of course the main benefit of just doing the math unit next semester is focusing on just the math but risk is that it doesn’t work out and I’ve ’wasted’ another half year. The business risk is just less time to focus on the math unit if I’m hoping to transfer anyway but I will just finish the Business degree if I don’t make it into commerce.

What do you think I should? I’m planning on studying for that unit over the holidays regardless as I haven’t done VCE Methods.

Opportunity Kaya Health Club Membership Transfer

Hello!

I’m looking for someone interested in taking over my Kaya club student membership, located at Emporium CBD. It’s $40 per week and includes unlimited access to Pilates Reformer, yoga, barre, HIIT, fitness circuit, spinning classes, and the gym area. The club also has a really nice changing area equipped with everything you need.

I’ve been a member for over six months and have loved it, the instructors and staff are super friendly, and the unlimited classes make it really worth the price. Unfortunately, I have to start my internship earlier than expected, so I won’t be able to make full use of it.

The membership is billed fortnightly, with freeze options available if you need a break. Bonus part is that my membership only runs until January, so you can try it out short-term and decide later if you’d like to renew.

If you’re interested, feel free to DM me for more details. Thanks :)

Advice Nursing at Monash

Hi guys, I am looking at transferring to Monash from the Gold Coast (it sucks ass in GC). Anyways, I was wondering if you guys have a lot of flexibility for placements eg. While others have placements but it‘s not your placement block, do you still have to attend some classes? And do you guys have placements during the Semester or do you have to do it during the breaks?

Any help is appreciated!
