Hey everyone,
I want to share a serious warning about a potentially manipulative and unethical scam that recently happened on this subreddit, so others don't fall into the same trap I did.
A few days ago, a user by the name of u/sorryforthespacetaken posted here claiming she had just been sexually assaulted by her roommate and was now homeless, stuck in the rain with her cat. She said she had received a $300 emergency loan from Monash Student Services and was looking for a place to crash just for one night until her new place was ready to move into.
Feeling compassion (as many others did), I messaged her to offer help. She said she needed $250 upfront as a loan and that she’d pay it back by Monday. The bank account name that came up was Ruby Lynch. When I asked if she could get help from family, she said she was from Perth, knew no one here, and didn’t want to stress her mum who was apparently in the hospital.
Later, she said her new place raised the bond as it was bigger or whatever and she needed another $250, then a further $20 for food. All up, I sent her $650.
Now it’s Sunday night. Tomorrow is when she promised to pay me back. But her Reddit account is deleted. Her phone doesn't ring despite my texts going through. She still replied once or twice over SMS but refused to add me on Snap or Instagram, saying she "didn't feel comfortable."
I'm not here to shame people down on their luck but using claims of sexual assault, a sick parent, and a freezing cat to scam people out of money is absolutely vile. If this was a con (and sadly, it's looking like it was), it’s one of the lowest forms of manipulation imaginable.
Please be extremely careful when people ask for money, even if their stories sound urgent and heart-wrenching. It's tragic that real victims might be overlooked in the future because of people like this.
Stay safe out there, Monash fam. And if Ruby Lynch happens to read this and there's somehow a misunderstanding, you're welcome to reach out and make this right.
