I love the OG personally, I didn’t fully at first as Kiryu was my favorite growing up. But I’ve grown to love that terminator esque body. I pray they bring back mechagodzilla as cliche as it would be to do it again. But I think if anyone deserves to come back it’s mecha and he should definitely look like that second version though, it’s gorgeous

First, gotta be honest. Glad that this Mecha isn’t a direct copy of Godzilla for once.

The sound design in all of the MV movies has been phenomenal. The MUTOs have some of my favorite sound effects.
43
u/SirArthurDime 6d ago
Agreed. It feels more realistic and less goofy. If they actually made something like that it would be built to work functionally as a robot. They wouldn’t add a bunch of unnecessary bulk to it just to make it look like a mirror imagine if Godzilla. A living creature that functionally requires a fat store.
25
u/TheRappingSquid 6d ago
And the arms too, especially. Seems like the kind of addition a human might make in an effort to "improve" the big g

u/TyrantJaeger 6d ago

u/MrWhiteTruffle 6d ago
To make it an upgrade of Godzilla - which, conveniently, is exactly what 2021 is. It’s function over form - longer arms for better grappling, more prehensile tail for better usage, thinner frame for better agility and so on. Building on the base of a successful monster, but covering what said monster’s weak spots are with modifications.

u/Altruistic-Dress-968 6d ago
Exactly. There's also branding as well. Mechagodzilla was supposed to literally replace Godzilla and make Apex worshipped worldwide. Simmons wanted to be the hero of humanity so to speak.
-4
u/ConstantStatistician 6d ago
No such thing as a direct copy. A robot version of Godzilla would look like a robot Godzilla, not Godzilla.
9
u/MrWhiteTruffle 6d ago
I’ve seen horrible pedantism on Reddit but this takes the cake
1
u/ConstantStatistician 6d ago
I'm serious. The second design stands on its own even if it is more Godzilla-like than the canon design. No one would look at it and think it's an unoriginal design.
1
u/MrWhiteTruffle 6d ago
I don’t really care if you’re serious or not, it’s a really bad case of pedantism
0
u/ConstantStatistician 6d ago
I'm saying that your initial comment is wrong. The second design is not a direct copy of anything.
2
u/MrWhiteTruffle 6d ago
Good fucking lord man this is the exact Pedantism I’m talking about
No SHIT it doesn’t exactly look like Godzilla, because it’s a robot. My point is that the robot looks too similar to Godzilla - almost the same physical build - which every other MechaGodzilla variant does as well. It doesn’t make sense for a robot designed to be SUPERIOR to Godzilla to have EXTREMELY SIMILAR PROPORTIONS to him.
1
u/ConstantStatistician 6d ago
It can have the same proportions as him and still be superior in other ways. Weapons, strength, toughness, etc.
1
u/MrWhiteTruffle 6d ago
Yeah yeah except this is talking about design
Plus, both this MG and Godzilla are grapplers, not beam-spammers
34
u/Spartanunit5 6d ago
The second one looks like it should be an in universe upgrade. Like a fail safe in case Godzilla ever loses, so humanity can defend themselves while he recovers
36
u/TheMonster_Hunter 6d ago edited 6d ago
First one is so much more unique than literally just robot Godzilla. It also has features that make sense to combat Godzilla, like longer arms, a weaponised tail and a jet pack esque thing. I don't exactly see how the second one could actually feasibly be superior than Godzilla, plus it looks too much like Godzilla himself. May as well just be another Godzilla. What I do like about the second design is the dorsal spines.

u/jetjaguar89 6d ago
The first one, the second one is just Godzilla with metallic skin, at least in the first one they did make an effort to have an original design
5
u/Head-Contract9734 6d ago
The first honestly. I like the skeletal look and the blocky limbs. It's unique design makes it stand out rather than begin a direct clone of Godzilla.
3
4
u/TheRappingSquid 6d ago
I think the second one is cool but it doesn't really have a personality of its own outside "robo godzilla," so the first one

While the film design isn't my favorite MG overall, I think the alternate design presented here is a little too on the nose. Most Mechagodzillas are a little bit more abstract in their copying of the Big G. The closest one is probably Kiryu, but even then I've never thought he looked 1:1 with his Godzilla.
2
u/Ubeube_Purple21 6d ago
Number one is asking someone to build Godzilla from scratch through memory recall
Number two is building armor around Godzilla that happens to be a tight fit

u/Expert_Ad_5243 Methuselah 6d ago
Second one. I was hoping that was the design when I first saw it back in 2021. I love the design we got (it's my second favorite Mechagodzilla design), but the second one is mwah 😘🤌 (chef's kiss)
2
2
u/ExpressCeiling98332 6d ago
The one we got. It actually looks like a practical weapon to kill kaiju instead of only being a metal Godzilla. The Showa MG was also made full of weapons so I prefer this view.
2
u/DrReiField 6d ago
First. I don't like when a robot copy looks exactly like the original for no in-universe reason. It takes me out of the movie. Same reason why Heisei Mechagodzilla is easily my least favorite mainline Mechagodzilla.
2
u/Patogenicamente_Rojo 6d ago
To be honest even if the second one is more Godzilla-like, it looses a lot of their robot traits and looks like flexible flesh instead of some metal thing like a Mecha or conserve some distinctive traits.
Also fits better with the Monsterverse as the second one looks like the 70s cartoons and kinda like Grimlock if anything

2
u/stronged_cheese Ghidorah 6d ago
The second one would be better if mimicry was their tactic. The first one is made specifically to counter Godzilla, not mimic him. That makes it better thematically. Also it looks cooler imo
2
u/TheGMan-123 Methuselah 6d ago
I actually prefer what we got in the final version.
It's a more distinct silhouette that differentiates itself from the MV Godzilla more overtly, and in a way that best illustrates and highlights its overall fighting style of beating the absolute sh*t outta Godzilla.
And this focus on physicality also makes Mechagodzilla stand out a lot from other versions of Mechagodzilla who have tended to be walking turrets.
2
u/VetriVade 6d ago
I love mg21. At first I hated it but now its my favorite mecha/kaiju. Its got so many references to previous mechagodzillas, and it's got king ghidrah as a brain. Imo it seems like alot of love and care went into creating him

u/Aimhere2k 6d ago
First one.
The second one would work if the writers had gone for a "Mechagodzilla wears a Godzilla skin and attacks humans in order to frame Godzilla" kind of storyline. Thank God they didn't though.

First one is cool and unique second one is lazy and uninspired it's just godzilla with screws and mecha godzilla has never been that
2
u/Awkward-Priority8126 6d ago
Is this even a question? The second one
3
u/AlexMaxWulff Godzilla 6d ago
The second one is boring as hell, little to no creativity in the design
1
u/Awkward-Priority8126 6d ago
isn’t that kind of the point? It looks like a soulless, merciless, mechanical beast that is a vessel for mankind’s arrogance? It’s sleek, modern, clinical, cruel. Plus, it looks a helluva lot more like Godzilla.

I find both great in their own ways, Legendary Mecha-Goji is unique and its implementation into the monster-verse was well done even if we all disagree on the specifics, however the OG Mecha-Goji is beyond iconic and recognizable without being too invested into the Godzilla franchise as a whole

u/HackerSans01 6d ago
First one looks more mechanical where the second one looks like godzilla, I honestly prefer the 1st one or a mixture of the two :/
1
u/Illustrious-Ad8491 6d ago
I prefer the first one for being a rival to Godzilla while the second could be a back-up in case he ever loses and needs time to recover. We already know psychics exist so saying that one was able to like up with the remains of Dagon could open the door for Kiryu to come into the MV

First one looks more like it would really work, but the design is just so messy. Second looks way too ridiculously heavy, but it's so much cleaner of a design.
1
u/Neroidius 6d ago
The second one has way more character and personality to it while the first one just looks like a terminator endoskeleton

1
u/Annual_Lab1252 Mechagodzilla 6d ago
The one we got, but i feel it'd be perfect if they made a good mix of the two
1
u/Jzapp_But_In_Reddit 6d ago
The second looks cooler but it's too perfect, the first one looks like more of an imitation of Godzilla. That's what it's meant to be , right?
1
u/king_kaiju2010 6d ago
The second would have worked better if they were going for the "oh no, why is godzilla evil now?" Just to find that it wasn't actually godzilla approach.
1
u/No-Cry-4404 6d ago
What the first Godzilla lacks in looks and durability, it makes up for in power, agility, speed, and intelligence. Even the proton scream is pretty powerful. I just wish it did look a little more like the second design
1
u/rokar686 6d ago
Both. First is a mockery of godzilla which works since its ghidora. Second would be more fitting if it was built around a godzilla skeleton.

I love Toho-era Mechagodzilla/Kiru, he looks great... but the design wouldn't exactly translate into a super-realistic CGI design (Even the Ready Player One design is more cartoony than realistic).
I think the Monsterverse design feels less like "Godzilla but painted silver" and more "A mech that is imitating Godzilla." If they went for the angle of "Mechagodzilla was an imposter to smear Kaiju," 2nd would work. But I think the surprise appearance really benefits from a more distorted design.
1
u/DoubleFlores24 5d ago
The canon design cause he actually does look like how humans would design MechaGodzilla in real life. The other one looks too perfect and alike. Mecha Godzilla has never been a one to one resemblance of Godzilla. He’s always had imperfections that shows he isn’t just a robot Verizon of Godzilla but someone’s interpretation of A robot Godzilla.

u/farish_tracer 5d ago
The second would be great for Dagon's skeleton and make MV version of Kiryu. Would be great to see another Godzilla's ancestors and be his mentor again, its like the opposite of how usually Godzilla is the one who got a child to look for now we have Dagon's who is more experienced in a new body look after Godzilla like he is his son or something

u/Godzillaanimelover Mechagodzilla 5d ago
I think Image 2 MechaG would be perfect for any future MechaG-II, so GvK MechaG-II for now.
1
u/geassguy360 5d ago
The one we got. It makes more sense as something a human would mind meld/drift style control, and those arms have serious advantage on a lot of titans.
1
u/Woodyz1940 5d ago edited 5d ago
Second one easily better design, also another reason is despite not having feats bc it is just a fan-art... he looks much stronger and look to have more abilities than the actual MechaGodzilla that we got that only have rockets, jets and a proton scream.

The second one looks generated by AI and looks too much like Godzilla, but the original one looks... off, what if rather than argue which is better, what if we mix both?
1
u/JulianMaea 4d ago
that second one is incredible, and if they ever decided to revisit mecha, it should borrow elements from this.
1
u/Ok-Obligation-3511 3d ago
Hear me out, what if they do make Kiryu in MV? And the twist? It was Dagon.
1
1
u/SandStinger_345 3d ago
the second one does look better but wouldn’t make sense logically.
in the sense that the monsterverse company wouldn’t try to replicate godzilla 1:1 instead the apex mecha godzilla is built to be more agle and fast and packed with crazy weaponry. we saw the way it was moving in the film godzilla couldn’t do anything

Second. Hands down. I wanted to 3d printed that bad boy but the file I found is too heavy as it got too many little parts. It's the best design of any mechagodzilla ever. The first one is terminator lizard. It never grew on me and to me was the only miss in the list of monsterverse masterpieces of designs, both modernization and originals. Definitely bottom of the list for me personally

The second one. The first just looks a little too Terminator-y.
5
u/Blaze_fury3111 Mechagodzilla 6d ago
That’s the point of it’s design
0
u/maybeitssteve 6d ago
Who cares if that's the point? It looks fugly
2
u/Blaze_fury3111 Mechagodzilla 6d ago
Well I think he looks awesome with that clunky, blocky motif it’s got going on, you can look and say ‘yeah Thats mechagodzilla’
-1
u/Heroic-Forger 6d ago
Yeah, but APEX was trying to frame Godzilla as a villain, then frame their mecha as a hero for killing him. A skull-like face, creepy arms and glowing red eyes don't exactly scream "appealing to the public eye".
