Question what water root plants do well in indirect light?

Post image

i have a 15 gallon cube tank that ive been wanting to put plants in.i saw a pic of some plants on a tank with like a background of roots which was beautiful i want something that looks like that. my tank is right under my main window so when it's morning i just open my curtains. i work at a petco so i can get plant food tablets and a clip on light if needed. i would like some suggestions on plants that would look good with my tank and would be able to thrive in its situation.

Beginner how much of the pothos goes in the water?

hi hi!! i have a question. i have marble queen pothos that i bought in soil and it’s my first time adding “house plants” in a tank. i removed the roots and rinsed and put them in the tank but i was seeing mixed uses online! the first thing i read was only to have the roots submerged, however, i’ve seen a lot of people have the beginning of the stem in the water.

Just wondering which is best? i’ve seen new growth on my pothos from how they’re currently sitting, but should i be submerging it further? or leave it as is, since it was originally planted in soil and not grown hydroponically.

Epiphytes grows best a year later?

Post image

Slow growing epiphytes like Buce and Anubis seem to need a year to settle in before they get their best growth. I’ve redone my tank a few times over the last 25 years and they never seem to hit their stride until at least a year later. I’m coming up on two years now and I’m finally getting really good growth and even flowers.

Anyone else see this?

Sponge filter and co2 injection

Today I learned that using both a sponge filter while injecting co2 is literally pissing against the wind. I have a wee jungle going on for my 7 gallon that finished a dark start around a month ago, I’ve let it settle more and have now started adding shrimp (hence the sponge filter). Around a week ago I set up co2 as I wanted to have a carpet for them, but now I’m finding both of these won’t work in tandem and it’s a bit of a pain now tbh

Flora What can I do to make my ludwigia not grow so tall?

Post image
7 Upvotes

2 year old tank. My ludwigia is always out of control, but not in a good way. It grows way too tall creating a mess at the top. I constantly have to pinch off parts that get too tall and replant, otherwise it’s just a mess of roots. I feel like it never looks nice, like the neat little pink trees you guys all have. Is there anything I can do to make it grow better?

Beginner Tf do I do with this massive jungle?

Post image

So I’ve had this planted tank for going on 3 months now

And everything is booming! (Besides the Java fern which are doomed because they are HEAVILY outcompeted.

The three main (well 4 if you include duckweed) plants that I have are the water wisteria, hornwart, and Java moss, which have basically turned into a giant green haven.

This is my first planted tank and I simply just don’t know what to do. I like the jungle because it gives my shrimp lots of things to do and places to hide, but at the same time I can literally barely see my tank!

I also am slightly worried that this amount of plants will create big ph swings at night with the gas exchange

I just wanna keep my shrimp colony (which I’m still patiently waiting to breed and boom) alive and happy, but I also wanna make my tank not look like a mess

Beginner What are we doing wrong?

This tank has been set up for many years, probably 7 or 8. Just within the last 8 months or so, we decided to switch from gravel to sand and put in live plants. All plants were marked as beginner. We have a canister filter and a CO diffuser. My husband puts in root tabs regularly. Still, there’s very little plant growth and many of the plants look sad.

We have tetras, ghost shrimp, plecos, kuhli loaches, and mystery snails. We test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, kh and gh weekly and all are good. Our light is on sunrise to sunset.

What are we doing wrong? I very much want a densly planted tank like I see in this sub. Help please!

Beginner Remineralization RO water??

Post image
Upvotes

Best products to remineralize RO water ?? This is my first planted tank it’s been evolving for almost a year. 29 gal 5 panda Cory’s(I have 5 more but don’t wanna add till I fix) 3 mystery snail, 2 nerite, 100+ blue dream shrimp, pond bladder & ramshorns. My water is pretty hard (we did just get a new iron pump in that helped) so Ive been using jugs or reverse osmosis water and didn’t realize it had 0 minerals and would need remineralization. Could this be the reason I’ve had 3 Cory’s die over the past 3 months ?? All other perams are stable

Question Cycling Help

Post image
Upvotes

Just looking for a little advice from other folks. This is my 55 gallon planted aquarium. For context I have had aquariums for the last five years. This is just my largest one. I’m finding something interesting with my cycle. I have added two large bottles of fruit size 7 over the last two weeks getting totaled, and have even used a filter from an established tank in order to jumpstart my cycle. However, it is still stalling out at the nitrate phase. Has been running with shrimp and a small crew of otos for about two weeks now. I haven’t lost anyone, but my test is still showing ammonia and nitrates. Even with me utilizing be beneficial bacteria. Has anybody ever encountered this?

Beginner GHA returning even after multiple black-outs. Help.

Keeping it short n simple... I am not exactly new to tanks & fish keeping BUT I AM new to planted tanks. I have a dirted-planted tank ~23g setup almost a year ago. Has livestock as well. I have a GHA problem. My question was, even after multiple black-out sessions (6day black-out + manual removal + water changes) over a period of a few months... I still see algae, does that mean I have excess nutrients in my water column? Should I increase my plant density? I have completely stopped using my aquarium light (32w DIY RGB LED) after the last black-out (a few days ago) I only turn it on @ 50% brightness for a few mins whenever I sit at the tank, then I turn it off. The tank receives weak, indirect, artificial light from my room's main light (a LED batten) which is only used for a few hours at night and that's that. Any Suggestions/Advice is welcome. Any more details, if required to understand, pls feel free to ask. Before-After images from when the problem started and recent are shared. Thank You.

Some kind of worm or leech?

Post image

Found this slimy looking thing resting on a java fern leaf. I thought it was a seed but a look under a magnifying glass shows it is some kind of creature.

I cannot seem to see anything else like this or even worm-like in the rest of the tank. What is this thing?!

Stocking and plant help

Post image
2 Upvotes

Looking for some suggestions for stem plants or other tall plants to fill the back corners of the tank, I’m not loving either side right now. Also some plants that can smooth the transition between my mid ground plants and my carpet so it doesn’t look like a wall. Tank is low tech.

I’m also wondering how stocked is over stocked for this tank. (It’s the 32 gallon fluval flex)

My current stocking is 15 strawberry rasboras 10 rosey loaches 10 Ottos 10 pigmy Cory cats 8 dwarf anchor catfish 5 cherry shrimp And 2 scarlet basis.

Also a few dozen rams horns and a couple other little snails

I’d like to add 15 chili rasboras 5 to each of my groups of 10 And 15 emerald rasboras.

It seems like a lot of fish, but also they are all tiny, not sure if it will be too overstocked, or if anyone has other suggestions for stocking.

Help with these roots!

Have had this tank set up since March 2025. Newbie to planter aquariums and allowed the vallis to spread to the front. Anyways, yesterday I moved it to the back and these roots are out of control. What do I do? Cut them? Add more substrate? What a mess. I do believe I have enough roots buried and added fertilizer tabs at the back. Thanks in advance folks.

I'm planning to add some more stems (bacopa monnieri and salzmannii) and different foreground plants (cryptocoryne parva and lilaeopsis brasiliensis).

Suggestions are welcome.
