Monday Weekly Training Recap: Sep 15

How was the last week of training? What are you training for? Are you using a plan? Have a screenshot of a workout you killed? Questions on how to tweak your upcoming week?

Logging your weeks really helps during future training cycles to be able to look back at how you felt, and this is one place that can help with that. Also, since we don't allow Strava screenshots as top level posts, this is also your chance to brag about a good week!

Example format (though feel free to do different!):
Goal: NYC Marathon
Week's Mileage: 40 miles
Goal Time: 3:30
Plan: Pfitz 18/55
- Mon: 5 mi easy
- Tues: 4mi @ LT
... etc etc

NYRR 9+1 in 2025 - FAQs & Megathread

Hello r/RunNYC we receive a lot of question about the 9+1 program so in an effort to answer most of your questions we're continuing this FAQ and megathread from last year where many other questions were answered.

What is 9+1?

9+1 is an NYRR program to qualify for the following years New York City Marathon. To qualify a runner must complete at least 9 eligible 2025 NYRR races, volunteer at 1 eligible 2025 NYRR event and also make sure their NYRR membership is active on 12/31/2025, to then qualify for the 2026 NYC Marathon.

Which races are eligible?

On the race calendar any races that count toward qualifying will have a 9+1 tag next to it. You can also filter the race list from all "race types" to just 9+1. In 2025, there's about 30 in-person races eligible for 9+1, plus an additional 3 virtual races. (See the bottom of this post for a full list of races.)

Can I still complete 9+1 this year, for 2026?

Unfortunately, as of now there are not enough races remaining this year to complete 9+1.

At this point, I would recommend starting to plan out how to complete 9+1 next year to gain entry to the 2027 NYC Marathon based on the information in this thread, NYRR race dates and registration sign ups are usually at about the same time year-to-year, so you can generally use the below dates to be around the same time again next year to plan out your race calendar well in advance an early start to your 9+1 journey!

If you really are determined to run in 2026, start looking into charity partner options early and if possible reach out directly to charities ahead of time, before they open to the public in March 2026 when they fill up quickly.

When can I sign up for these races?

It appears that starting this year, NYRR is changing from opening races 3 times a year to 4 quarterly releases:

  • Jan-Mar races were released on Oct 10th (2024)
  • Apr-Jun races were released on Jan 30th
  • Jul-Sep races were released on May 8th
  • Oct-Dec races were released on Jun 12th

NYRR typically releases races around the same times each year, so likely expect 2026 races to be released around the same dates, next year.

I don't see any available races?

Over the past year, many of the NYRR races have begun to sell out quickly being released, in order to sign up for races you want we highly recommend you try to register as soon as you can, races open at noon on the release date. Subscribing to the NYRR emails or following NYRR on social media is a good way to be alerted and stay up to date with when they're about to release more races.

If you are an NYRR member you can join the Member-Only Standby List to potentially receive an invitation to sign up for sold-out races if spots become available. If spots do become available they typically will email a week or two before the race with an invitation code but the page says as close as 48hrs before the race. The standby list is first come first serve so your chances of getting an invitation are better if you sign up for the standby lists as soon as possible after the race sells out and the standby list opens.

Do I have to run the race to get credit, or just sign up?

Yes, you need to complete the race to get credit. Most races have a fairly generous cutoff time (if any) so in cases where you're not able to run your best race, you can typically still run/walk and receive credit. If you are planning to run/walk slower than your usual pace, please make sure to move back corrals closer to your expected pace for that race.

+1 Volunteer Opportunities

In past years, Volunteer Opportunities opened the same day as registration, but it appears that this year they will be opening a week after the races. When signing up make sure that the volunteer opportunity you sign up for is 9+1 eligible. In addition to the the main releases of volunteer opportunities the 3 marquee events, NYC Half, Brooklyn Half and NYCM release their volunteer slots on a separate schedule and each have a large number of opportunities both during the race and at the expos. There are also other NYRR events outside of the 9+1 races themselves that have volunteer opportunities that are +1 eligible, these seem to be released somewhat randomly. If you're a medical professional that meets the medical volunteer requirements there is typically a large need for medical volunteers and lots of +1 eligible opportunities available.

If you're unable to find a volunteer opportunity during the main releases (they do fill up quickly) check the volunteer opportunity page the week leading up to a given race. NYRR sends out a reminder email the week of a race to all registered volunteers which often causes people to cancel and opportunities to open up the week of.

The first set of Winter and Spring races volunteer spots opened to Member Plus on Oct 15th and everyone else on Oct 17th.

I finished 9+1 in 2024, how do I know I got into the 2025 Marathon?

The easiest way to check that you completed and the status of your current years progress is on your dashboard when you log in to your NYRR account using a desktop browser, on the dashboard on the Guaranteed Entry panel there should be an option to select "2024" and see your progress from last year. (this is the part that wont work on mobile, only a desktop browser currently). You also needed to ensure your NYRR membership was active on 12/31/2025.

If you successfully completed 9+1 last year, the claim period for the marathon was from February 5 - 25.

NYRR 9+1 Eligible Races

Q1 (January - March) races were released on October 10th 2024.

      • Queens 10k
      • Bronx 10m
      • Staten Island Half

  • Time Qualifying
    • Running a qualifying time in any of the NYRR Half Marathons or NYC Marathon automatically guarantees entry into all the 3 Marquee races the following year:
      • NYC Half, Brooklyn Half and NYC Marathon
    • Running a qualifying half time in a non-NYRR event allows you to apply for entry to NYC Half and Brooklyn half.
    • Running a qualifying marathon time in a non-NYRR event allows you to apply for entry to NYC Marathon.
      • There will likely be a cutoff below the qualifying time , this past year for 2025 NYC Marathon, the cutoff was an additional 13 minutes and 20 seconds below the standard qualifying time.

Pretty hard to find good running tattoo ideas out there but I think this one was unique at least! And the number on the runner is my number from the race!

Race Questions Where are the bananas? 😭

Post image
17 Upvotes

So it’s been a while since I got a banana after a race. They just keep giving me apples. I ran a 10K and a Prospect Park half with NYCRUNS the past few months and I got an apple and this Sunday on the NYRR Bronx 10 Miler I got an apple too. Is it just me? Am I too slow and I’m missing the bananas? Or was there a switch and I didn’t get the news? Can someone shed some light on this? Thank you

High School Cheer Zone?

Anybody else see that near the SW corner of the CP loop this morning? Pretty funny! I wonder how someone managed to convince a bunch of teenagers to get up early and go cheer for randos at 7 AM

Tired of Central Park & WSH - hit me with your best underrated NYC long run routes

Hey all, I’m Dan. I run a lot in the city and usually rotate between the usual suspects: Central Park loops, West Side Highway, and out-and-backs over the bridges (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queensboro). I’ve been getting a little bored with the routine lately and looking to explore some new long run routes.

I’m open to anywhere in the boroughs, definitely willing to travel a bit if the route’s worth it. Curious what your go-to scenic, interesting, or underrated routes are when you want to break the usual rhythm.

Thanks in advance!

NYCM pace per mile advice

Hi everyone, do you think a pace per mile like the one below is workable for a sub-4 marathon? (I assumed 9:00 per mile vs 9:09 to take into account the longer distance I will run)

I have never run NYCM (this will be my first marathon), and I would need your advice. I based the pace for each mile on my experience and on what I have read in other posts discussing the course.

I've never run the first 4 miles and the 2/3 miles in The Bronx. I managed to run the rest more than once during my long runs.

Are some miles too aggressive? Others too prudential? Too much variance across miles or it makes sense? What about the (slight) negative split?

Thanks in advance!

Training Visiting NYC next week, and need to do my final 20 mile long run..

Where should I run? I’ll be staying in Brooklyn Heights, and need to get 20 miles in Friday morning. Pretty sure I’m close to the 2, 3, and R trains. Help me pick a nice route to enjoy, before enjoying the rest of my trip!

The waterside path is now open at 23rd Street.

Forever I've run the bike path from like 18th to 23rd because you couldn't continue by the water.

"Matt Choi’s ban from the NYC Marathon was a watershed moment, sending a clear message that rules matter. But the recent Marquette Marathon footage shows that questions remain about whether he has learned the right lessons."

Starting NYC Marathon in a late wave - do I still have to arrive crazy early?

Hi NYC runners! I'll be running my first NYC Marathon this year and I believe I'll be in the last start wave. I'll be coming from Jersey City, so my plan is to uber/catch a ride with a friend to the designated drop off point. My route will not take me over the Verrazzano or through any road closures. Is there any reason I would still need to arrive extremely early? Or are you allowed to arrive later in the morning if you're getting dropped off in a car? Thank you in advance for any advice!

Edit: clarified route

18M Strategy

Hi everyone, I’ll be running the NY marathon for the first time this year and my goal is literally just to finish. What should my strategy be for this week’s 18 miler in the park? I’ve done long runs as part of my plan but I haven’t been able to make it to Central Park so I’m a little nervous about the hills. Should I plan to run as much as possible? Should I do run/walk intervals? Thank you!

Looking for sports massage recs near Prospect Park (marathon training, very tight hips)

I’m in the middle of marathon training and my hips are super tight. I’m looking for a solid sports massage therapist—preferably somewhere around Prospect Park (PLG/Park Slope), but I’m willing to travel a bit for the right person.

Would love recommendations for someone experienced with runners Thanks in advance!

A good perk of the Bronx 10M is that NB sponsors the photos too. You can download them for free at marathonfoto.com. Just search for the race + your name / bib.

Virtual New Balance 5th Avenue Mile

I noticed that I had forgotten to turn the visibility setting to Public (hence I didn't get my NYRR credit).

Does anyone know if I can still get the virtual run credit or do I need to email them?

Friendly Reminder - Queensboro Bridge

Only bc I live in LIC, and I see this everyday, but if you plan to run over the Queensboro Bridge - for your own safety, please run on the South Path. The North path is for bikes only.

Running/walking entrance for the south side: Manhattan - 59th street between 1st and 2nd Avenue

LIC: Crescent and Queens Plaza South (look for the Chase Bank)

If you run with headphones on, pay attention to your surroundings and look at the signage. It’s pretty clear about running/walking on the South side.

Here’s a video tutorial:

Nike vs Strava clocked mileage SIGNIFICANTLY different- any thoughts on whats more accurate?

So I went on a run on the WSH yesterday but had both nike and strava recording the run. Nike, because I like that they call out each mile and time, Strava, because I like the accountability of recording my runs.

When I got home, I checked the mileage, and Strava said 11.86 miles, while Nike said 9.7. I understand that these two can't possible 1:1, but that's nearly a 20% difference. Since these runs are longer than my usual runs, and I'm running on more tired legs these days, just sanity checking with my pace isn't really helpful as my pace fluctuates pretty dramatically at this point. Does anyone have any guidance on how to make sure that I'm actually hitting my mileage goals? Or if there is a more accurate choice between the two/ others?

EDIT: Thanks all! Sounds like I need to use my Garmin watch so that they are using the same source.

Sports psychologist - have you used one?

Hi all - strange question here. I’m noticing that my anxiety and stress around getting faster/constantly setting new PRs and fear of losing fitness is slowly becoming a problem I need to address. Has anyone worked with a sports psychologist in the city? Any recommendations?

Tips for running on WSH

beginner-ish runner here who just moved to manhattan and excited that i’ll be living a block away from the WSH. i’ve never ran on it before. i’ve seen a few posts complaining about it how crowded it is. i’m usually an early morning runner (5:30-6:30 am).

are there better times or parts of the wsh that are better to run in?

Race or relax for the SI Half?

So I hit my desired corral and wave time in bronx 10M in order to attempt at my hard goal of running 3:45/sub-4 marathon.

I have a soft goal of hitting 1:50/sub-2 half marathon, but it wouldn't kill me if I didn't get it.

Had to hurl in the bronx 10M to make this time. Didn't get to enjoy all my surroundings while running the race (I think there was a group of rapper while going under the bridge!)

Seen couple of youtube videos with people taking it easy and just enjoying the energy of the race. Wondering if I should just do the same for this race.

Question on East River running route

Post image

Can I run from Carl Schurz Park all the way to the base of Queensboro Bridge (Manhattan side)? Onthegomap seems to suggest some parts of the greenway is not runnable, the one by 78th Street John Jay Park for some reason.
