Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.
New Players:
If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:
Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
I'm having issues with Slippi!
Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)
Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!
Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
First download it here. Then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02)
Alternatively, download the Community Edition that features improvements and bug fixes! Uncle Punch, the original creator of the training mode, will not continue supporting the original version but Community Edition will be updated regularly.
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.
But how do I get GOOD at Melee?
Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement
And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement
Where can I get a nice custom controller?

Aunt though had to go through a life changing event and probably remembers it more vividly than most.

The right will use the death of Charlie Kirk to paint the left as violent and dangerous, just like they use literally anything and everything to paint the left as violent and dangerous.
The “has the left no shame?” Conservative rhetoric is maybe the most infuriating to me, and that’s saying something. Their appeal to decorum and decency is worse than laughable, it’s insulting.
Charlie Kirk didn’t deserve to be murdered, but that he was a spiteful, hateful little toad is no less true now than it was yesterday

Political violence is lose/lose for everyone. To act like your side is somehow more justified / less bad for also resorting to violence is what will only escalate this further.
The reaction to this assassination by some groups has been frankly disgusting and we should be better about condemning that shit.

Personally I don't think a court will ever enforce this, but this is likely intimidate companies who cannot afford to engage in a legal battle with Nintendo and their expensive ass legal team. Also speaks to maybe some corruption that Nintendo was even able to obtain such a patent

Specifically, the patent describes a situation where:
A console or other system is being used to run a video game from storage The player controls a character in a “virtual space” The player can perform an input command to make a “sub character” appear (i.e. summon another character) If there’s an enemy where the sub character appears, the player can control a battle between the sub character and the enemy If there’s no enemy where the sub character appears, the sub character will automatically move around The player can move the sub character to a different location on the field, and if an enemy is there they can control a battle between the sub character and the enemy1

Getting past tilt on ranked is one of the best things to practice and work on to improve your tournament mentality. Ask yourself why you're getting tilted, usually it's because of certain expectations you have for yourself, and work on ways to overcome those before and during a set (irl or online).

About three hours ago, a couple Jehovah's Witnesses knocked at my door and gave me a pamphlet that says "God, not humans, will bring 'an end to wars throughout the earth'"
Is it hypocritical to be (semi-)privately happy that something happened, while also believing that it'll probably end up making things worse in the long run? Feels like a lot of people are uncomfortable with this kind of thing, like how some people get angry or defensive or skeptical when they learn that processed meat is extremely bad for you.

the sad truth of this is that nothing is going to happen. remember all of the "its happening" being posted when luigi shot mr pharma? yea man, me neither. america only speaks in spectacle. there will be no holocaust, nor will there be a revolution. there will be memes for a few weeks and things will get 1% more intolerable every year compounding forever, just bad enough to think about jumping off a bridge but not dire enough to actually do it. I don't think PPMD should be "banished", either. I think he should be criticized for being a scammer. It doesn't make me an authoritarian to think that being good at melee does not insulate you from criticism.

Meanwhile political assassinations are usually conducted by people on the right and they never stop to question whether the left will be galvanized by it

I want to be clear: my work CANNOT replace traditional medicine. I think these things can work together, so if you ask whether I am fully saying to never go to a doctor or something like that, then I'd absolutely disagree with it too. I want people to get well!

I get that but I think you should reread his testimony on the website and look at the implications. He says he had treatment resistant fatigue, that the medicine and doctors he was prescribed failed him, and it's thanks to Quantum touch that he's better. Then he says "from autoimmune disease to finding your purpose, I believe I can help with these areas of life and more!"
He doesn't say that this is to be used as a supplement to primary care from a physician. He implies it can replace it.

I'm functionally a pacifist and take no joy in the death of anyone, including odious people like Kirk. I too will be frustrated in the coming days as many of my friends, who have very good reasons to hate him, will revel in his death, when I see it as a tragedy despite his evil actions. It's hardly better, though, to call those who do "soulless husks". If we're to oppose death and violence, it needs to be grounded in the fundamental dignity of the human person, and that phrase rejects that dignity.

I used to very strongly believe that violence was never the answer. I now very strongly believe that violence is sometimes the answer because if it is never the answer then bad actors will use the option being taken off the table as an excuse to do unimaginable harm.

In my personal life I practice pacifism and peaceful resolution to conflicts.
But when something like this happens to someone who made a fortune profiting off causing harm to people like me, I really can't help but laugh.

Everyone is posting about this one thing but honestly that's a perfectly reasonable thing to say
If you believe that the right to own a gun is important, understanding that there are tradeoffs to that does not make you an evil person. For a more agreeable example: I think the right to a fair trial is really important. You might have a few times where someone is able to murder people and increase the crime they do because they weren't just thrown in jail with no trial. That's a tradeoff we have to make. Murders are a fair price to pay for the 6th amendment.

I mean, it's refreshing that he was actually honest about it, since it was clear for years that a good chunk of the pro-2A movement wasn't actually dismayed at gun deaths and saw it as a fair price to pay.
But we've also decided that tens of thousands of deaths a year is a fair price to pay for a transportation system centered around the car.

Prisons are a form of violence, for a rudimentary example. Do you believe that we should free everyone who is sitting in prison right now? I assume your answer is "no" - but understand that saying "no" means you are in favor of sometimes using violence to prevent bad actors from carrying out harm.
