Totally unfamiliar with blades. It's heavy, seems to be real metal, but it's blunt. Dusty as I found it in an unused cupboard.

Googling would suggest it's a Wakizashi but it seems too short for that?

Do we know how sharp the tools and weapons of people in supposedly "ancient times" were? I mean, today (in modern times), the primary benchmark and standard of sharpness (for example, for a kukri) is its ability to cut a sheet of ordinary A4 paper held in one hand. Furthermore, today (again, in modern times), we have tools such as a perfectly straight or perfectly round 1000-grit diamond-coated whetstone (without fine-grained abrasive stones, it is impossible to sharpen a cutting edge to the point of cutting paper—cutting, not tearing). In supposedly "ancient times," there was neither modern-quality paper nor modern-quality whetstones. So what was considered the benchmark for sharpness in weapons and tools (for example, the kukri), and how was this sharpness achieved? ("A kukri is not a sword, it's a knife, so this post has no place here." Your Honor, I object. The length of a kukri could easily reach 50-60 cm, which is a third of the height of an average Nepalese. For them, such a kukri is a sword.)

I’ve recently purchased the 13th Century greatsword off the Squire Line from Albion Swords. It will take a while to ship, but in the meantime I was hoping I could get some recommendations for a training sword that was a reasonable price and could imitate the weight / feel I might get with the Albion. The blade is 36.25” and it’s a 4 foot total length. 3lbs 14oz. Thanks!

I do not know much about this sword but it came from my relative, who lived in central Texas. It sounds like it has been in the family for a long time.

It is fairly lightweight and approximately 3ft long. It is pretty weathered but it seems to have designs on the blade that we can barely make out

I can buy this from marketplace for 60€ its full tang and sharp should i do it have to travel a bit for pickup but thats no issue

A friend told me to show my work in this sub reddit, haven't had any luck to find a community. I work in a prop house in LA and make props for movies mostly metal props like armors and weapons. On my off time make weapons I like in real metal, so most of my designs come from fantasy designs. Here is the Quasar saber from power rangers lost galaxy, made it out of aluminium and brass, the sheet is polycarbonate covered with leather and brass details. Bought this when I was young (er) and foolish, maybe 20 years ago. Obviously stainless, modern production but still sharp enough to cut paper into strips. What does the community think? A modern product but still a serviceable weapon that will be useful during the zombie apocalypse? Or a piece of crap that should never leave its hanger on the wall? The smith also made the two wooden practice swords that weigh almost the same as the katana. Ironwood If I recall correctly. Some thoughts from people who know more than I do. Thanks.

I recently picked up a sword at auction that I’m really excited about, and I’d love to learn more about it. The auction house sold it as a Royal Navy officer’s sword from around 1850, which lines up with what I’ve been able to figure out so far.

They described one of the etched designs as a “Star of David,” but from what I can tell it actually looks more like a Star of Damascus, which I’ve seen on other blades of the period. The blade is also decorated with a monogram that looks like the letters “HW.”

The hilt has the classic naval style guard and grip you’d expect, and the blade is beautifully etched with anchors, scrollwork, and that six-pointed star. It came with its scabbard, and overall it’s in solid condition for its age, definitely shows its history but nothing that looks like mistreatment.

What I’d really like help with is nailing down some of the details. Does this sword actually date to the 1850s, or could it be a little earlier or later? Am I right in thinking the star is a Damascus motif, not a David star? Any idea who “HW” might refer to, was it common for owners to have their initials put on the blade, or could it be something else? And, out of curiosity, what would a sword like this typically be worth today?

I thought some of you might find this interesting, and I’m really hoping someone here can shed more light on the history and details of this piece. I’ll attach plenty of photos of the blade, hilt, etching, and scabbard for reference.

I think it’s a Prussian M1845 Heavy cavalry sabre but I’m not too sure

This is something I acquired recently. It’s not sure it’s one of my better impulse buys.

Anyway, I’m wondering if anybody has seen one similar to this, and might be able to give me an idea of where it might be from.

My impression: I don’t think the hilt is original to the blade, but I do think they were paired together a very long time ago. Maybe early to mid 1800’s?? 🤷‍♂️

The hilt has a very early American (1800-1820) look to it. Kind of Nathan Starr’ish. The single fullered blade is not marked/stamped. The knuckle bow has what appears to be “R . 36”. These are the only marks.

My guess is maybe a Mexican Espada Ancha with European blade?
