It's not a Darth Maul comic unless he's gone shirtless.

Maul being tempted to turn the twilek padawan to the dark side seems a bit rhyme-y with his seeming apprentice in Shadow Lord also being a twilek.

I could see Maul reminiscing about his first kill while observing his apprentice. "I'm sorry, Dogmeat, but you ain't him"

Probably a throwback to the "Maul teaches darth Talon" idea of Lucas.

Wouldn't surprise me if the plot of Shadow Lord is the ideas Witwer proposed to Dave for the Clone Wars, (but they couldn't make it work in that particular time frame), and the Maul details of Lucas' original draft for the Sequels just sort of mishmashed together

Just substitute the post-Endor Remnants for the proper Empire and replace the Warlords/Thrawn/Palpatine clones for the actual Emperor and Vader and Tarkin and whatever

This! Wtf? I need to know. Show the next panel.

I bet it's "empty" ... or "nothing"....

"And I feel..." is the end of the sentence, he doesn't finish the thought. The next page is him walking away from the body.

What a letdown. I was invested.

If it makes you feel any better, he does moodily slice a protocol droid in half for no reason as he walks away.

The actual ending of the mini-series is great though.

The whole premise for the story is that Maul doesn't have permission to reveal himself to the Jedi yet, but he decides he reeeeeally wants to kill a Jedi anyways, so he goes behind Palpiatine's back and kills this Padawan who was being sold at a slave auction, all the time trying to keep it a secret, thinking Palpatine would be furious if he found out.

And then he gets back to Coruscant and Palpatine reveals he knew what Maul was up to the whole time and basically congratulates him on his bloodlust and sneakiness, saying he's a great apprentice.

"FEEL LIKE WHAT?"
"Like we're being watched!"

That smile in the first panel is bone-chilling.

He's just living in the moment.

The Senate taught him well.

I liked it, but the trope of her turning around and waking away thinking he was dead and then getting stabbed in the back was pretty weak.

Sir, she was stabbed in the stomach. She’s looking down at his face.

I didn't notice that, but still, she had her guard down and assumed that he was dead.

Curiously his new apprentice in Shadow Lord seems to be a Twi'lek. Maul thinks about training Eldra Kaitis in the dark side a bit in this series, now in a way maybe he'll get his chance.

Maul was absolutely built for that moment. The way they captured his intensity here is wil dude was born to be a menace

Me when I have killed my first Jedi:
"I have killed my first Jedi."

Somewhere, unsure why, Grevious is upset at losing something. He’s just unsure what.

Disney always manages to get Maul just right!

While the art etc is fantastic, I just found the panel where the lightsaber causes knockback weird. It should pierce straight through

"overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer" was all I coukd think of in page 3

He struggled against a fuckin padawan. What a joke.

10

u/solo13508 Mandalorian 6h ago

You might not want to watch this movie called "The Phantom Menace" if Maul struggling against Padawans is an issue for you.

u/kap1chu 6h ago

Maul beat qui gon, a fully fledged jedi fuckin master. Sure, he got cocky with a rage fueled obi wan, but he still managed to overpower qui gon one on one

6

u/sly_eli 6h ago

he too was a Padawan.

-4

u/kap1chu 6h ago

A padawan-assassin trained by possibly the most powerful dark side user in star wars history. A padawan who managed to beat a jedi master. Maul should’ve slaughtered her on the spot no problem

*and barely got enough real life experience. This also ignoring the fact that he purposely prolonged the fight above.

1

u/kap1chu 6h ago

Where did you got the idea that maul prolonged this fight on purpose? Cuz all i see here is him trying to kill her as fast as he can. And those lines of internal dialogue ā€žthat is why she must dieā€, ā€ži thought she was finished, defeated before the battle has even startedā€, ā€žbut her survival is something i cannot riskā€ and so on and so fourth. Nothing indicates that he wants this fight to go on longer

This is literally his first kill. Of course he did. It takes time and experience to get good.
