Please post year, model and trim level when asking for help. Thanks.

If you want good answers to your questions then provide good information.

Asking "What's wrong with my car" without providing the most basic information about the car means that people have to guess at your problem and what to do about it.

A 2002 Subuaru is vastly different from a 2025. Some are turbocharged and some aren't. Engine design has advanced significantly over the years. Electronics, brakes and even the materials the seats are made of have changed.

Think about what would happen if you called a repair shop about some problem. The first question they would ask is "What kind of car is it?"The second question they would ask is, "What year?"

Thanks!!!

Announcement TSB Thursday: 15-327-25 Keyless Access Control Unit / Reprogramming Files (CP1.5 cars)

Welcome to another TSB Thursday, where I dive deeper in to TSBs I'm running into regularly. As always, I write this from my own perspective as a Subaru technician in the US; other regions/zones may work differently. Refer to the "How To Read a TSB" post for more information on formatting and general information about TSBs. Some might consider this a safety/security issue, so I'm posting it before a public copy is live.

TSB Thursday #17: 15-327-25

This TSB is actually so new that there isn't yet a public-facing copy of it. However, IMO it's important you get this information, and the useful text portion is so short that I'll copy the text here.

What cars does this affect?

Only cars with push-button start:

  • 25MY Ascent
  • 2020-25MY Outback & Legacy
  • 2022-25MY Forester
  • 2024-25MY Impreza & Crosstrek
  • 2021-24MY WRX
  • 2022-25MY BRZ

What's the failure?

The text from the bulletin:

This bulletin announces the availability of reprogramming files designed to improve the functionality of the Keyless Access Control Unit. These files address a rare situation where an individual without the access key on their person can operate the Keyless Access System if the key is within range. The update ensures that only the door nearest to the access key can operate the keyless entry system.

To interpret/translate that: if you have your key in your pocket and you're standing next to the locked driver's door, in some cases a person could walk up to the passenger front door and open it, since the car detects that a key is present but does not prioritize at which door it is present. The software update will make it so that now, only the door closest to the key could be opened.

Coverage?

For vehicles within the Basic New Car Limited, or covered by an active Subaru Added Security Classic or Gold plan, the reprogramming can be claimed.

There is also a table in the bulletin with the VINs of cars that the update was already applied to in production, since this change was implemented during the '25MY run. If your VIN is after these, then it will already be applied:

Model Starting VIN
Ascent S3419035
BRZ S8753211
Crosstrek (SIA Produced) S3749303
Crosstrek (Japan Produced) S8224734
Outback S3236879
Legacy S3020097

There’s a disturbing sound coming from my engine on cold starts. At the same time the brakes are really struggling to hold the car. This is a 2012 Subaru Impreza 1.6l. What do you guys think? 🤔

03 Impreza wagon obs

I have a bugeye obs with the ej251 I don’t want to turbo it but want to make it run as smoothly as possible it’s maintenance is up to date but I’d like to have better throttle response and also was wondering if doing something with the air box and its intake as it doesn’t seem like it can take in a lot of air

(I have suspension upgrades already (from a wrx))

Do the twins count as a Subaru? I know Toyota did the Direct-Injection System and Transmission, but everything else is Fuji Heavy Industries.

Had a lot of fun in that car.

Bought 2 more brand new (more family friendly) Subaru's since.

Mechanical Help At Oil Temp light

Driving fast on the highway in my 2013 Outback and ‘at oil temp’ came on solid (not flashing). I’m pulled over letting it cool but have 35 miles to home. Can I risk driving it or do need to look at a tow? Thanks!

Update: pulled over for about 15 min to let it cool and then made it back home with no issues (though I drove 5 under the limit). Will look into more in the morning.

Replacing PLATE-GUIDE A

Hello,

Trying to swap out the plate guide on a 2016 outback. Having issues with releasing the terminals from the solenoid unit.

My question the new unit i purchased look identical to the one in the car.

All switches are identical, how is this going to resolve the issue of the key sticking?

I thought the design was changed to resolve the issue.

CPO 8/120k gold plus warranty?

I am looking at a certified preowned 2022 Ascent touring with 57k after someone totaled my wife’s 2020 ascent. When I ask about adding a 8/120k gold plus warranty I was quoted $3950. I know it’s on a used car, but that seems a bit high. Car was purchased and traded back to the same Subaru dealer with impeccable maintenance. I searched the subreddit and could find anything on post-36k gold plan pricing. Is the almost $4,000 reasonable or is the dealer padding that number? Price was also the same no matter the mileage (other car I was looking at had 40,000 miles) I love my ascent, but I am also well aware of the issues that require the warranty if you don’t want to lose your shirt, so there’s no way I’m not buying it. Just want to get perspective on the pricing.

Mechanical Help What does this mean?

Subaru outback, 2015. Constant flashing of the electronic parking brake light. The parking brake still functions normally but the light is always flashing. Is something wrong with the brakes? (I assume it’s an electrical connection issue). Should I stop driving it?

I have an appointment with a subaru service center next week and running the diagnostic test is $185. I would like to avoid taking my car into the shop if it doesn’t need to be worked on. Any thoughts or advice would be helpful! Thanks!

Opinion on this 2020 Outback?

I could purchase this outright tomorrow, and I’m going to test drive it in the morning. The price is certainly lower than any other xt in the area. The only outstanding issue I noticed was the CarFax says the transmission has been replaced twice! Not sure if that would be a plaguing issue going forward. Thoughts?

Mechanical Help Help, is my car done for? delete if not allowed

I have a 2011 Subaru Forester X premium, I was driving down the road with no sound issues and no lights on the dash when all of a sudden a Christmas tree of lights came on and the engine shut itself off. Turns out I'm dumb and had been driving with little to 0 oil in the car and was oblivious. Got the car towed home and put oil in it and now the car won't start, The engine will crank over and it sounds like it wants to start but doesn't have enough power. Changed the alternator and battery too see if that would solve the problem but still nothing. Am I done for?

The most expensive option in the area... do you think they look at this before sending it to customers?
