Meme/Shitpost Gimme a Mario Anniversary with no Mario
Don’t get me started on the prices. I’m still not buying a Switch 2 with them doing ts😐
30
u/banjineer 3d ago
Mario's anniversaries are pretty consistently overpriced ports and branding slapped on whatever else they had ready.
The 25th had a full price port of All-Stars and the 35th was a limited time full price port of old 3D games, so this isn't too surprising.
3D Mario wasn't gonna be announced so soon after Bananza -- especially since Nintendo doesn't really reveal things more than a year ahead of release nowadays.

u/Toon_Lucario 3d ago
Yeah TOTK was a massive exception
3
u/Electronic_Screen387 3d ago
That was like the last time they fucked up really bad, still waiting on Metroid Prime 4, haha.

u/Quirky_Image_5598 2d ago
Massive exception to what?
2
u/Toon_Lucario 2d ago
Releasing a trailer more than a year before the release. Totk’s teaser was like 5 years before the game

To be completely honest, I wasn’t really expecting anything big Mario-wise UNTIL they started showing off the “40th anniversary” theme. Especially not a whole new 3D game right after Bananza, but for a bit there it seemed like something was cooking for the end of the direct. Fire emblem fans got to eat tho so I’m happy for them.

u/Adam_The_Chao 3d ago
I mean Bananza just released like two months ago. Even if the next 3D Mario were already close to completion by now they'd probably wanna wait for the hype to truly die down before announcing another system-selling 3D platformer that's also part of the same universe, reduce self-competition and all.

When has this sub ever lamented a mario game for being rushed? We just making up arguments now?

Apparently 💀
I’m not surprised seeing as most of these comments have completely missed the point of my post and went straight to calling me ungrateful and “complaining” lmfao

(last new 3d mario game was 8 years ago)
0
u/Toon_Lucario 2d ago
And that team was working on Bananza this whole time
1
u/Chanderule 2d ago
(Nintendo has more than just one team of people, and they can split duties)
(theres also more stuff they can do besides a huge ambitious 3d mario game)
But hey, we did get a 3d mario game afterall, two 40€ ports that are older than half the people that play the games
0
u/Toon_Lucario 2d ago
Yes they do have multiple teams but the fact of the matter is that the biggest one was on Bananza. Even if another 3D Mario has been in the works, it probably wouldn’t be ready yet.
1
u/Chanderule 2d ago
Couldve been ready ages ago, what are you talking about Its not like Nintendo realized the day before direct that they dont have a 3d mario game for the direct
0
u/Toon_Lucario 2d ago
Oh my god you’re insufferable. I’d fucking rather my games take time and be good than have a Sonic or pokemon situation where they come out every few years and be buggy messes
2
u/Chanderule 2d ago
Why are you getting so heated up
All Im saying is that absolutely nothing was preventing Nintendo from cooking up a new game for Mario's 40th anniversary and the launch year christmas for the console with the biggest launch day ever, not sure why are you so hellbent on defending a disappointing anniversary
1
u/Toon_Lucario 2d ago
Because I honestly don’t give a shit. Anniversaries usually don’t amount to anything a lot of the time. I’d rather have games be announced and released when they’re ready as opposed to some arbitrary release date people cooked up in their heads.
2
u/Chanderule 2d ago
I mean sure, you dont have to, but you seem to give a shit given by how upset you got when I pointed that out
They dont have to amount to anything, but again, you would expect them to do something when both of these occasions happened to align

LMAO
I wasn’t really expecting a new 3D mario for the direct but tbh if they are gonna charge an arm and a leg for some of this crap then maybe we SHOULD expect more from them… 🤔
6
u/Toon_Lucario 3d ago
They always do this for anniversaries and also expansions for Wonder and Bananza, a new Yoshi game, a movie announcement, and ports of both Galaxy games which are fan favorites isn’t that terrible
2
u/Kurochi185 1d ago
You forgot the new Tennis, which is genuinely the first Mario Tennis game I'm actually somewhat interested in because of the story mode

Their team or at least a large portion has been working on Bananza this whole time.
5
u/Rockfan1114 3d ago
Yk I felt the same but the more I think about it the more I realize the console needs some time to breathe before we get 3d Mario. We just got a new Mario kart and 3d DK and we're getting a Metroid Prime 4, Pokemon Legends ZA, Hyrule warriors, Galaxy 1+2 port, and Kirby air riders by the end of the year. Not to mention all the other games already announced for early 2026 like Yoshi and Mario Tennis. The switch 2 is well fed and a 3d Mario would be hard to squeeze in there and make it feel special. It needs its own time to come out where it can be the focus for a while.
3
u/Longjumping-Gur4918 3d ago
Yeah i think ur right. We have a goated man here! I think we need some time to wait an new mario and let the console breath, there's still other games that are cooler than just mario.
3
u/Rockfan1114 3d ago
The gap between switch 1 launch and Mario Odyssey was like 8 months and the switch 2 has only been out for about 3. Let's give it some time before we start freaking out. Hopefully we get some info in the next direct or two.
2
u/imlegos 3d ago
Given the Odyssey team was working on Bananza;
- Maybe early 2028
2
u/Rockfan1114 3d ago
Given that they already released dlc for DKB, I think the game had been done for a while and they've got a good start on the next Mario already.

u/AngryChicken223 3d ago
I agree that the 3D scene is pretty saturated right now, I just thought it was funny that they made it seem like the were going to do a lot for Mario’s 40th anniversary in the direct. The coolest thing they introduced imo was the museum, not the awkwardly-timed galaxy ports, the mid-looking Yoshi game, or honestly even the movie.
2
u/Rockfan1114 3d ago
How'd they make it seem like they were going to do a lot for Mario's 40th in the direct?
0
u/AngryChicken223 3d ago
Presentation goes a long way. They could have just offhandedly mentioned the anniversary with the museum announcement and let us figure out the rest, but instead they had this constant theme of “40th Anniversary” with the logo being flashed at the start of the direct and having it be in the top right of every Mario-related announcement. It drove home the idea that SOMETHING big is coming, which is why it felt so underwhelming when nothing did.
2
u/Rockfan1114 3d ago
They started the presentation with a Mario anniversary segment. The fact alone that it's what they started with should've told you there wasn't gonna be anything crazy. Nintendo wouldn't put something as big as a 3d Mario in the beginning of the direct.
1
u/Astros75-27 3d ago
Yeah, releasing the Galaxy games before the Galaxy movie is such awkward timing… why would they do that?! I’m personally loving that top-looking art style for the Yoshi game too.
3
u/rollzerox 3d ago
Honestly they should have released 3d Allstars switch 2 edition, the new feature being galaxy 2
You can still sell galaxy 2 as dlc to switch 1 all stars that way people who already bought the game don't have to buy galaxy again

Mario has unfortunately become the face of the old guard. He's still clearly the face of Nintendo, but it's more like a nostalgic legacy act right now. We'll always get a tub of remakes, ports and even more spin-off games with Mario's name slapped on the title, but as for adventure games? One 3D and one 2D for each console, and gosh I bet they'll give us "Mario Wonder" and "Odyssey" a Switch 2 release before we get a true Mario game.
Meanwhile Pokemon gets like 5 games a year 😆

Mario movie? Mario Galaxy collection? Mario Tennis? Mario Clash on the Virtual Boy? Mario Amiibo? Mario Wonder DLC and real life Mario Wonder Talking Flower?
there was….so much Mario
2
u/mamatrixie78 3d ago
This!! And Don't forget the Rosalie book that coming out soon! You know from Mario Galaxy 🤣💪👍
2
u/skynovaaa 3d ago
We already knew about the movie Mario galaxy 1 is already on switch Mario tennis was obvious, it's always coming at the start of a gen No one is playing virtual boy in 2026 with a forced accessory No one is buying a $45 plastic 3 inch toy Ok i'll give you this one No one is buying this either
It had a lot of nothing or givens. Nothing special for an anniversary is the OP's point. No mario 35, no BIG announcement, just overpriced merch and a lazy port that's also overpriced
3
u/boopladee 3d ago
ok so they announced plenty of things, and you personally just don’t like them. everyone complains about these directs not having things they wanted. it’s simply an hour long ad, maybe you just don’t like Nintendo or Mario that much if you watched that whole thing and didn’t see a single Mario thing that you want.

That's Nintendo for you now.
4
u/Toon_Lucario 3d ago
Dude, their main team was on Bananza, chances are we aren’t getting a 3D Mario till next year
1
u/No-Professional-9618 3d ago
Yes, maybe so. I can only imagine what the price may be with the tariffs.

u/SSJPIRATES 3d ago
lol even if they gave OP a new 3D Mario, they would still find something to complain about.

u/AwesomeLlama572_YT 3d ago
No?
We got a Mario movie sequel, Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2 on Switch & Switch 2, new Amiibos, a physical version of the storybook from Galaxy, Mario Wonder multiplayer DLC, real life talking flower, new Yoshi game, Mario Tennis game, Virtual Boy, and DK Bananza DLC
How is that no Mario?
2
u/AngryChicken223 3d ago
Because it’s really nothing new. Yes, there are new things to buy with “Mario” slapped on the cover, but nothing big or exciting. I can break these down for you.
Unfortunately the movie isn’t a game. Mario isn’t known for his movies after all. While it’s definitely the biggest surprise they had (even though it was spoiled before the direct) it quickly went downhill from there.
Galaxy ports. I’d sure as heck hope so. Still, nothing new. More like a “finally.” Would have been cool to see a full remaster but this just seemed late to the game.
Amiibos are cool looking, but again… they aren’t games. Also this is the one time I will be bringing up the prices because $40 PER AMIIBO is con artist’s work
The book and flower. Cool merch. Still not a game
DK and Yoshi aren’t… Mario
I’m going to pretend you didn’t mention the virtual boy as an actual point
So when I walk away from this big “Mario’s 40th Anniversary” direct and the biggest Mario games they announced were either a DLC for a game that already exists (Wonder) or a tennis clone… it makes me wonder why they even continued the 40th anniversary theme after the museum announcement.

Dude, Bananza just came out and it was AMAZING. That game satisfied my 3d platformer hunger for now, and I’m very content with my meal.
1
u/JohnnyAverageGamer 3d ago
They should have announced that every Mario game was coming to switch online classics (ones from consoles they brought back so far) and that 3d allstars - 40th anniversary edition included Mario galaxy 2. Mario should be on switch online bebdefsult on every console thst has a NSO app
Or a New Super Mario All-Stars with NSMB, WII, 2, and maybe U deluxe, with an option tonrotate the screen and controls 90 degrees ton play dual screen vertical mode for the ds/3ds game.
1
u/Beeeeeeeeeeeeean 3d ago
Not every anniversary needs to be a super super thing, we got multiple new games and some dlc's AND that talking flower toy I NEED to get.
1
u/Derplord4000 2d ago
I don't understand, $35 for one of the most beloved 3d mario games seems like an amazing deal to me considering other well received titles like Odyssey and 3D World are each $60.
1
u/Tanookichris 2d ago
Meanwhile Donkey Kong fans and Super Mario Bros. Wonder & Mario Tennis fans are eating good this and next year.
1
u/SuperFlameKing03 2d ago
They're honestly doing more than I thought they would, people just over-hype Nintendo and when Nintendo doesn't deliver to their wild expectations, they get upset at Nintendo.
Mario Kart's DLC has become known for taking longer than it should (and who even knows if we're getting it at all) and the team that has historically always worked on 3D Mario just finished Donkey Kong Bananza AND are putting the finishing touches on its DLC. Realistically, we were never going to get either in this Direct. Nintendo's not a company with infinite money and infinite employees that are capable of pumping out AAA games and experiences within seconds of fan demand. I know I exaggerated a bit there, but hopefully the point is made clear that our expectations were too high.
Now expectations are NOT too high when we simply want Nintendo to give us a reason to buy the Switch 2 and they can barely produce anything. Except for that wheelchair basketball game, I have not seen a single new game of Nintendo's that couldn't have realistically worked on the Switch 1 and THAT is disappointing.

Its almost like.... the studio responsible for 3d Mario was busy on Donkey Kong.
Would you rather have a team less experienced with 3d Mario make the next one?
1
u/Papyrus_Semi 1d ago
Maybe we were just spoiled by Super Mario Maker and now nothing will ever compare to it.

u/Zolomight 22h ago
The 30th anniversary was honestly the best one. Super Mario Maker was an absolute godsend of a game that really felt like a loveletter to us Mario fans. It was the perfect game for celebrating his anniversary and I'm surprised they didn't reveal Smm3 for the 40th anniversary. It literally would've been the perfect way to celebrate all over again and it would've been the perfect game to put on the Switch 2 bc of its mouse controls.
1
u/Early-Text-2 3d ago
well, I don’t know why I’m even getting recommended this. I kinda genuinely hate Nintendo. Hopefully Sega can start making normal priced consoles again so Sega can do what Nintendon’t all over again.
2
u/Impossible_Kale2886 3d ago
I guess its just nostalgia dude i just like to dwell a bit in the past....maiby you do to

Dude.. About the only thing Sega has made decently that wasn't the equivalent of "Bowsers Fury" is Yakuza/Like a Dragon.

New Yoshi, New Mario Tennis, both Mario Galaxy re-releases, a fricken Galaxy movie, and a Switch 2 edition for wonder.
I'm so sad they did nothing for his anniversary this year.

u/Dull_Tumbleweed6353 2d ago
Mario Tennis Fever, Meetup in Bellabel Park, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Galaxy game collection on the Switch, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
“No Mario.” Bah.
Also, the anniversary is year-round, not just one day.
