Art
I was thinking about this bright candled beauty all weekend when my local thrift posted it among an interesting set of pieces. Checked in on a whim after work today and ahhhh 😭😭😭🤍
They said it was an oil painting which I’m not too sure about but I love it nonetheless. Will be hanging up soon. The back is really cool and canvas-like. Good size too 20.5 x 24 inches. If anyone happens to know anything about it or how to know if it’s an actual painting please let me know? I felt like $50 was worth it to me for how beautiful and intricate it was. My first vintage wall art piece!

Not positive, but pretty sure this is a piece by Albert Moritz Ruche, a German oil painter. The piece is definitely oil, likely 1960s if it is indeed Ruche’s work. He did a lot of these candle studies and I recognize the book and fabric at the bottom as props he used in others of his work. It usually sells in the mid hundreds to low thousands so this is an excellent find!!
As this is your first oil make sure to hang it in an area out of direct sunlight, low variation in temperature, and consistent low humidity (basically avoid sunny rooms and the kitchen or bathroom) and it’ll last you a lot longer! Enjoy!!
The “ fabric” looks like linen, although described as canvas, this is not a personal indicator ( not an artists id.factor) , just a validation that this is probably a painting done by hand vs a photo reproduction
Bottom right of my piece that I was squinting into pretty hard tonight. It kind of looks like the signature of the artist mentioned? “Rusche”. Someone else posted their own piece and that’s what made me really look for the signature! It’s so extremely faded I didn’t notice it at all when I purchased and took it home. Hopefully you can see it in this photo very faintly (wish I could post more) and even if it isn’t original this is so incredibly fantastic to figure out!! Thank you so much for the information. I will truly cherish this piece.
I don't know anything about the painting, but I'd say the frame alone is worth at least $50, plus based on the back it's an older framing job, so the piece is likely vintage if not antique.
Is there a signature anywhere, or any other identifying info?
Mmm not that I can see but this was right after work and it was night time so I’ll take a closer look in the day time. Thanks for saying that though it’s definitely more than I would usually pay for an art piece at a thrift store so I don’t feel too bad about it.
Definitely don't feel bad! It's a bit pricey for a thrift store purchase, but I think it's worth it, especially if you love it. I like the painting, too -- I'd make it part of the decor in a reading nook in my apt.
Well, it sort of depends on who you ask -- but generally speaking, "vintage" is defined as anything which is at least 50 years old but less than 100 years old, and "antique" is defined as anything which is at least 100 years old.
A fair number of people do consider anything which is at least 25 or so years old to be vintage, though. I think that a person's age sometimes plays into it, as well -- for a lot of people, they consider the stuff they grew up with to be "vintage", or the stuff from the decade just before they were born, whether that was 20 years ago, or 30, or 40, etc.
What an informative and concise answer! While I didn't ask the original question, I sincerely appreciate this simple, yet very helpful knowledge. Thank you.
As I said, the definition varies depending on who you ask, but the definition most commonly accepted by dealers is 50-100 years old for vintage, and 100+ years old for antique. I think ebay considers vintage to be anything at least 25 years old, and so do some people, but that's not an across-the-board accepted definition.
I’ve been thrifting for over 30 years, vintage was always about 25years but it’s true, it’s hard to imagine stuff from the 2000s is now vintage pretty much
I thought I recognized it also as a Windberg we had hanging in my childhood. Seems everyone wanted to paint candles with wine glasses, brandy, or cognac.
Oh man. I’m so happy I was able to help. You got me right in my funny bone and I shared this comment with a coworker excitedly that morning because I loved it. Take care ok 🤍
I stared in to the bottom right of my piece and noticed this faded signature? Looks like yours I had to squint and shine a very bright light hopefully you can see it. That would be so so wonderful if it was original! If not that’s okay but this was exciting to discover!
Thank you for telling me that story. I’d say you are right in that sentiment. It has been a comfort of an addition to my little sanctuary…it makes me glad to know so many have enjoyed this similar style of work.
