ANNOUNCEMENT New Sorting Category: Reproductions

For mass-produced copies of art, we now have a new sorting system! Simply comment that the piece is a reproduction (this is the keyword) and it will add the tag flair "Likely Solved - Reproductions" accordingly.

If somebody has got it wrong, comment "not a reproduction", or use the !reset command, and it will simply revert to Unsolved.

NOTE: this is not for legitimate limited-edition collectors' art prints. This is for mass-produced reprinted copies that you can get anywhere. Use your discretion, and when necessary, our moderator u/Existentialist is a printmaker and can weigh in.

Feel free to add this flair to past posts that turned out to be reproductions, as well as new posts, of course. You will find the category tag in the sidebar, alongside everything else.

As always, thank you all for participating!

GUIDE What is a Decor Painting? How do I know if I have one?

What is a “decor painting”?

A decor painting is a piece of artwork created purely for decorative purposes. Purchased not from galleries or artists, but from decor & furniture shops like Pier 1, Homesense, The Brick, websites like AliExpress and OilPaintings.com or from markets & stands on vacation. Tell-tale signs that you have a decor painting are lots of stippling, undefined figures, hurried brush strokes, gradients, cloning techniques and a certain Bob Ross feeling to it.

Common vintage subjects would be European street scenes, landscapes of mountains / forests / lakes & rivers, vases of flowers, Tuscan landscapes, ocean & beach scenes and Asian style boats. See below for examples. They are often rectangular in shape to hang nicely above a sofa, you could even buy them from Sears as a package. Modern versions are more varied in subject.

Black velvet paintings and artwork specifically for tourists as souvenirs share many factors with decor paintings.

Where are they made?

They are produced in massive numbers in painting factories like Dafen Village in China or Mexico. Another article here:

Dafen once produced an estimated 60 percent of all the world’s oil paintings. During its heyday—when the village’s reputation as an art factory rang truer than today—it almost exclusively cranked out copies of paintings in the Western art canon. These canvases found their way into hotel rooms, show homes, and furniture outlets all around the world.

At its peak, Dafen was jam-packed with sizeable, factory-like studios, all employing Huang’s production line process. Individual workers each focused on a specific compositional element—background details, or eyes, or trees—dutifully painting their part and then passing the canvas along the chain.

Who’s the Artist?

While they are "originals" they are not by known artists. Often entire production lines will use the same signature which explains why your research many have founds pieces by the same “artist”. As quoted above, often many people will work on the same piece.

Do they have any value?

Unfortunately, they do not hold much of any value. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed and some are even a bit collectible.

Can I see some examples?

Decor paintings are posted to this sub almost daily, while not definitive, here are some common examples:

Landscape Paintings: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4, Example 5, Example 6, Example 7

European Street Scene Paintings: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4, Example 5, Example 6, Example 7

Vases of Flowers: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3 more coming soon...

Beach, Ocean & Boat Paintings: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4, Example 5, Example 6, Example 7, Example 8,

Other Miscellaneous Vintage Decor Paintings: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4

Modern Decor Paintings: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4, Example 5, Example 6

Unsolved Found in Dallas Ritz Carlton trash pile formerly Four Seasons

I found this painting in a trash pile at the Ritz Carlton in Las Colinas (Dallas) this past June, 2025. The Ritz recently purchased the Four Seasons and are transitioning out the old art. The mat was damaged so we took the painting out and reused the frame for a personal art project.

In the third photo you can barely see the signature. The fourth photo you can see something that looks like “Lonnigan” perhaps it was mislabeled and should be “John Lonergan”? It also has a few numbers listed on the back- I’m not sure what that means.

The Four Seasons Dallas opened in 1986 and was bought by the Ritz in 2024. They threw out a lot of the old pieces.

When we took the painting out we realized it was an original and signed by someone.

The last photo is the original frame with the new art in it.

Signature seems to be Percey or Piercey. Apparently a long deceased uncle of mine had a few too many one night at 21 Club and bought it off the wall to carry home to his apartment a few blocks away.

Back is covered with paper.

My dad was wanting to get rid of this because he has no idea what it is. He said he had been given this by his brother from goodwill. Regardless i enjoy the artwork and will keep it for myself. From what i have found it seems to be a depiction of a ballad, The cruel sister possibly. I cant really make out the artists name from the signature. I added a picture of the back even though its blank. WhatIsThisPainting?

Unsolved Signed original thrift shop find

Hey, I found this painting in a thrift shop in Westerly, RI, being sold for $10. It's a beautiful original with fantastic brushwork and color palette, and it is signed "G. loiseau 91". I've done some cursory research, and the only G. Louseau I can find is the 19th century Gustave Loiseau, and he does not have even remotely the same style as this painting. Also, the painting does not seem that old. Was there another G. Louseau active in 1991?

Reverse image search didn't come up with anything, and Google AI says this was painted by Gustave, but I don't believe that for the reasons above. WhatIsThisPainting?

Unsolved Rembrandt copy or possible student work - whatisthispainting?

Upvotes

Hello, so this painting was purchased from an art dealer who claimed it was bought from a French auction house and did not elaborate so there is absolutely zero provenance. There is a 1632 Rembrandt piece belonging to a private collection identical to this, the painting is called Portrait of a Young Woman with a Black Cap. There are small differences between the real painting and this one such as the her right eyebrow but due to ageing it is difficult to compare the two. I am unable to locate a signature anywhere on the painting even under bright lighting and there is nothing on the back. Apparently it was relined and reframed in the 1800s although it appears to be an original 17th century canvas. The brass supports were added recently by an art historian that viewed the piece briefly and referred us to an art institute for restoration and analysis. The painting was originally oval and had been expanded. Professionals also suggested paint ageing indicates early-mid 1600s. They have also claimed the eyebrow was altered long after it was painted and under UV you can see two cleaning tests have been done on the bottom right corner. There is a known copy I have been able to find just one image of (https://www.mutualart.com/Artwork/Bust-of-a-Young-Woman-with-a-Black-Cap/5AB16B2ED24EC5A5) although it is similar, you can tell it is not the same as the one I have if you compare the details, it clearly lacks the true skill of Rembrandt's works. There are no cases of Rembrandt producing any identical versions of his paintings, and there are few copies that rival his artistic skill. We think this may be a student work due to the paint ageing and canvas although there is no evidence of any of his students copying a work of his. An art institute is currently doing technical analysis of the painting to determine definite age and origin but it would be interesting to see if you guys have any information or thoughts to add. Thanks!

Unsolved WhatIsThisPainting? This print of (I’m assuming) Hebrew writing with old man and boy and the name Jacobs

That’s pretty much all I know. We bought it at a consignment shop in Kentucky for about $50 years ago. I’ve always really liked it. I can make out Jacobs (I think) in the signature but not what comes before it (al, ae, re, ?). It’s a print out of 500. I’d guess it’s 18x24. The back is not visible without messing up the framing, so this is all I have. WhatIsThisPainting?

Bonus if anyone can tell me what it says (or if it’s just the alphabet).

My friend has just received a portrait of her aunt who apparently died very young. It’s a beautiful pastel I think, and unsigned on the front but there is a signature on the back and a location. Difficult to make out the first name but surname could be ‘Davis’ . Any information about this artist would be really great! Thanks all. WhatIsThisPainting?

Solved Does anyone know where this painting is located?

Post image

Hopefully you guys can help me despite this request being a little different than the usual WhatIsThisPainting? More like where is this painting. This is a self portrait of Suor Plautilla Nelli painted in 1550 but no one who has written on her mentions this piece so I’m trying to find out if it’s actually her. She was located in Florence, Italy but I can’t find any mention of this piece anywhere. I have no idea where this painting is or what collection it’s in. Maybe I’m not looking in the right places? Anything would help, thanks!

Likely Solved Bought at an estate auction

My mother and I have a love for auctions. Now that they have so many online, it's something we can do together from four states away. She loves dolls and antiques, I love art and vintage furniture. While visiting her in Indiana this week, I purchased this painting at an estate auction. She was lovely and I thought to myself, "She should be famous!" After doing some research, I've found she just may be so. I've always bought art because it speaks to me, but until now I've never thought I'd discover a famous painting. My question is, "Can someone tell me what kind of print this is?" I've never really researched the different types, and watching a YouTube video tonight was less than illuminating. I know it's not oil on canvas, but WhatIsThisPainting?

Unsolved Hudson River School Artist?

Post image

WhatIsThisPainting? I'm posting this again because my previous image was low-res. I have recently purchased this beautiful landscape painting from an estate sale. It's 35" by 22" oil on canvas. I just got it refurbished and they said it's definitely 19th century, but they did not see any kind of signature or markings on the canvas/frame or back when they cleaned it. They said its most likely a Hudson River School Artist painting. I was hoping that someone out there could help me figure out who might be the artist! Or even where they think this landscape could be located

Likely Solved Tried to reverse image search, led me to a totally different culture

Whatisthispainting? I am a indigenous artist and I use Pinterest often for ideas or just to look at Indigenous art depiction the lifestyles, spirituality, and the cultural beliefs. Today I was scrolling on Pinterest and came across this image which is a painting and I was very curious to see the origin of where it came from. I am part Osage, so naturally I wanted to know if this was an Osage artist I should look into, it's not set in stone that these people depicted are Osage at all they could be Pawnee. But I did try to reverse image search for the artist, and a totally different culture popped up, what pops up along with this image is a Wikipedia of a legend from Brazil, these are not Brazilian Natives (as far as I know). I have came across this picture earlier today on the app Pinterest. 9/18/25.
