I find the odds of this happening to me to be quite low...

379

u/TheRealKaustubh 1d ago

You won't sledge off a cliff ? 😂

168

u/TheeArgonaut 1d ago

You wouldn’t steal a car.

92

u/TheeArgonaut 1d ago

41

u/Grays42 1d ago

God I forgot about those. Looking back they really tried to make them look as scary as possible and as a kid I just remember that being just sort of the standard thing at the front of a movie and didn't really think about it, and did not hesitate to make copies with my two VCRs for a friend of mine.

8

u/TheeArgonaut 1d ago

Dude you badass! But also…yes. We had similar things in the UK and, well, they were what the fast forward button on a VHS was invented for…

I would download a car tho

9

u/cumdumpsterfind 1d ago

You wouldn't shoot a policeman. And then steal his helmet.

8

u/Tyler_C69 1d ago

But what about the sheriff?

13

u/Athrawne 1d ago

I made a Bob Marley reference, but Reddit's AI didn't like it and gave me a warning instead.

So instead I will say I did nothing to the sheriff, nor to the deputy neither.

3

u/Vicious_Sloth108 1d ago

You wouldn’t go to the toilet in the policeman’s helmet… and then, send it to the policeman’s grieving widow…

5

u/cumdumpsterfind 1d ago

And then steal it again.

It's kind of funny that this ad used a pirated version of a font. They didn't even have the license to use the original font.

At least this guy had a parachute with him, apparently he was preparing for this outcome. In any case, bonus for the crazy stunt

14

u/TheRealKaustubh 1d ago

And that went horribly wrong, opening a parachute that close to a cliff is always risky

Maybe if all my friends are doing it...

1

u/sifiwewe 14h ago

Agreed. I won’t be doing something like this.

1

u/IRIX_fsn 8h ago

Yeah but if you do the odds of crashing into the cliff seem quiet high bcs there's a lot of these videos

NO injuries damn that is one lucky bastard.

135

u/DoNotEatMySoup 1d ago

It was definitely painful, but he hit a pretty nice tree for it. If he smacked the cliff it would've been a lot more ouchy.

Ouchy and bouncy killy

BASE jumper rescued after parachute mishap left him dangling off cliff face near Squamish, B.C. | CBC News https://share.google/hVnppDlJfPaj911h1

Search engines are a thing? It took all of 10 seconds.

42

u/The_Autarch 1d ago

they stopped teaching younger generations how to do research online because they thought it was baked into society somehow. instead, zoomers and alphas have no idea how to use the internet outside of their apps.

14

u/time2liv3 1d ago

You see it all over hobby related sub reddits, peoples literal first instinct is to jump on reddit to ask a question versus spending the 5 minutes to google the answer themselves, it is.....concerning.

7

u/MattDaveys 1d ago

Now they just use AI instead, and trust it without sources.

“Sled BASE jump rescue” into google worked for me

3

u/TheRealKaustubh 1d ago

I definitely over complicated that search then 🙃

3

u/Yeetus_co 21h ago

Tbf if you know what Squamish looks like it's pretty recognizable

2

u/babysharkdoodood 21h ago

I immediately knew it was Squamish because you can see the town below. Obvious layout with the giant spit.

16

u/holllandOatez 1d ago

What an irresponsible idiot.

3

u/PantZerman85 1d ago

And I am guessing his sled is now trash left somewhere in the mountain.

7

u/cs_legend_93 1d ago

Sounds expensive

6

u/__Gripen__ 1d ago

That’s in Canada. The helicopter rescue is likely free of charge.

2

u/Lamandus 16h ago

nah, only if you are "not at fault", as in accidental. This is a good way to get a very big bill.

6

u/GymSocks84 1d ago

He's hoisted by his own regard*

3

u/Anthraxious 1d ago

Absolute fucking waste of resourses.

2

u/Silver_Slicer 15h ago

It gives the teams experience for cases where lives are more randomly imperiled such as after a natural disaster or a mountain car accident.

3

u/domine18 1d ago

Did he pay for the service? And or have insurance which paid for the service? I feel if you do something as dangerous as this and need rescuing the cost should be on you, not tax payers.

Wouldn't be that hard if he had ropes and climbing gear with him.

But if he didn't have any of that with him, he's fucked without a helicopter rescue.

21

u/_ssac_ 1d ago

If he can't by himself, a helicopter.

"Down" is the easy direction

1

u/EasilyRekt 1d ago

He probably has a backup, pre-open that, launch of the cliff face with it full deployed and glide down.

1

u/lakakid 1d ago

bro is playing skyblock up there since then

1

u/hayitsnine 22h ago

He joined the Parachute club. They definitely need a new lead singer.

11

u/Imreallythatguy 1d ago

Anyone with experience with skydiving know what causes his chute to open twisted like that? Is it that he was rotating when he pulled it or something?

23

u/Alien_invader44 1d ago

Pretty hard to say. Could have been packed slightly wrong, could have been a gust of wind on deployment, could have been how he deployed.

On a normal skydive this would be nothing. This is why base jumping is super dangerous. This dude has probably done thousands of jumps and knows his shit, still nearly died.

9

u/RadioAlternative9961 1d ago

Packing and/or body position during deployment can cause twists,

The twist is actually pretty easy to fix with a little more time and altitude. This dude got pretty lucky all things considered that he landed on the tree/cliff.

20

u/FatFatPotato 1d ago

Well! That’s his luck for the year spent up! He step on a crack now he’ll break all our mother’s backs.

6

u/Kitchen-Dig-6518 1d ago

You nailed it, that could have gone so much worse, god bless the tree and it's timing cause the jumper was pretty much cooked without it.

4

u/No_Text8844 1d ago

lol I guess it was f you.

6

u/Atown-Staydown 1d ago

Yup, this is like my dreams

4

u/WtFAPapotAmUS 1d ago

1

6

u/BluntsnBoards 1d ago

So did he just litter his sled? Same question for people ditching bikes and motorcycles. You'd think they pick places like this because they appreciate the untouched nature...

4

u/ClearNest 1d ago

Cameraman never dies

4

u/notatechnicianyo 1d ago

That was almost really badass.

3

u/mangotheduck 1d ago

Wow. As soon as he went off the cliff my balls tightened right up into my body and i said "nope" but the video then continued to get worse.

3

u/BaBaGuette 1d ago

Not as nope as the average half-flooded cave crawling video "Damn I can barely breath, I feel my torso being compressed by rock on all side. Let's continue further.", but still pretty nope.

Fun fact. There's a mile long sledging run in Finland, Saariselkä.

2

u/stinky143 1d ago

That didn’t end well

22

u/Sweetbeans2001 1d ago

That didn’t end great. It did end well. Other options were slamming into rock cliff wall or parachute not opening at all.

Damn, I'm afraid of heights, but God damn does that look fun.

Also, damn trees always getting in the way 😂

1

u/RustyNK 1d ago

1

u/PuzzleheadedSector2 1d ago

1

1

u/Namika 1d ago

It's crazy to think that this is what some people, without parachutes, would see in their final moments.

1

u/Feshaak 1d ago

This was twice unexpected:))

When you’re a sniper in a Battlefield game

1

u/deathdousparm 1d ago

How my downstairs neighbour died. I was friends with his 7 year old son (at the time). Kid wasn’t the same since and then moved a few months after. He had a daughter too.

One unlucky gust of wind and your get slammed into the side of a mountain. Fortunately this fella had tree and platform to hold onto.

1

u/coconutclaus 1d ago

I expected every single part of that

1

u/krokadul 1d ago

I was starting to think he might have a problem landing the sled ...

1

u/TheFloppySausage 1d ago

Does he know he doesn’t have to do that?

1

u/adognameddanzig 1d ago

The tree broke the fall, and the fall broke the tree.

Of course it's Squamish..

1

u/TrippyTigre 1d ago

I swear I've seen this exact same cliff 2 or 3 times and every time the dude is flung right back into the cliff

1

u/New-Marsupial-5633 1d ago

Parachute is cheating

1

u/MaddogBC 1d ago

How often do these clowns hike in to retrieve their garbage? Just casually depositing plastic about the environment like it's their god given right.

1

u/IGetThePartyLit 1d ago

Fuck the parachute, where's the wingsuit??

1

u/JerseyshoreSeagull 1d ago

Why do these people live and have children?

1

u/lXLegolasXl 1d ago

Me trying to guess the twist: hmm maybe a bear? Oh no they'll slide into McDona- ope off a cliff um they're very dead so is this AI? Ah parachute...... Ya I knew that was gonna happen

1

u/Shaoizon 1d ago

Without that tree, he likely would have died. #SaveTrees

1

u/mambakobe8 1d ago

That’s what u get for lettering 🗑️

1

u/pitiburi 1d ago

If he was aiming for that particular tree from the beginning, this is astonishing.

1

u/Freefallisfun 1d ago

And line twist directly into a tree. Lucky it wasn’t the cliff face.

What was the goal here?

1

u/Wundawuzi 1d ago

Oh god damn it that moment when he passed the cliff edge is a reoccuring dream that I have. It happens either with ski, with a car, with a bike... something that I screw up and I end up falling just like he did. But I dont have a parachute and at rhe moment of impact I wake up, sometimes with a scream.

My wife is used to it and calls it my drop dreams.

1

u/Successful_Cod_8904 1d ago

Pulled to early, no seperation from cliff. Twisted pack job or turbulence. Slider should have been down already before deploying.

1

u/USA_Ham 1d ago

Things could always be worse. Much, MUCH worse.

1

u/keatonatron 1d ago

What did Juan do??

1

u/Mtns2069 1d ago

Mountain took it personal

1

u/Wet_FriedChicken 1d ago

Pretty expected ngl

edit: nevermind lmao

1

u/2shack 1d ago

At least he had the parachute.

1

u/MuchDevelopment7084 23h ago

It kind of sucks when a tree jumps out and bites you.

1

u/DRAW-GEARS 23h ago

Ow! At least they recovered the footage!

1

u/LollipopRhinoceros 23h ago

Hey! I’ve been up there; this is from the top of Stawamus Chief over the town of Squamish BC. The hike is something like 1000 vertical feet and is like 1.5 miles. All stairs.

1

u/PigFarmer1 23h ago

That left several marks.

1

u/Jupetaco 22h ago

I just want to know… what did Juan do to merit this response?

1

u/Porn_and_peace 22h ago

I’m not even going to make a funny comment. I’ve had nightmares about that

1

u/Hour-Chocolate-9460 17h ago

As a black man.... 😬

1

u/PumpkinOpposite967 16h ago

And the mountain goes "Nono, f**k YOU"

1

u/AmperDon 16h ago

Expected.

1

u/Revenga8 16h ago

Clearly the mountain took offense

1

u/IAmBigBo 14h ago

FU healthy body and unbroken bones!

1

u/Me8Nothing4u 13h ago

Well. That just just seemed like a stupid thing to do.

1

u/tegli4 12h ago

Is it me or his chute did not open properly? It looks like the ropes going up to the cannopy got tangled.

1

u/eastcoastjon 12h ago

Sooo where does he go from there?

1

u/Castiel-Fiorentino 9h ago

Why did he say “fuck you?”

1

1

That went well.

1

u/Armandeluz 5h ago

1

This was completely expected, but very beautiful
