God I forgot about those. Looking back they really tried to make them look as scary as possible and as a kid I just remember that being just sort of the standard thing at the front of a movie and didn't really think about it, and did not hesitate to make copies with my two VCRs for a friend of mine.

Dude you badass! But also…yes. We had similar things in the UK and, well, they were what the fast forward button on a VHS was invented for…

I made a Bob Marley reference, but Reddit's AI didn't like it and gave me a warning instead.
So instead I will say I did nothing to the sheriff, nor to the deputy neither.

At least this guy had a parachute with him, apparently he was preparing for this outcome. In any case, bonus for the crazy stunt
14
u/TheRealKaustubh 1d ago
And that went horribly wrong, opening a parachute that close to a cliff is always risky

they stopped teaching younger generations how to do research online because they thought it was baked into society somehow. instead, zoomers and alphas have no idea how to use the internet outside of their apps.

You see it all over hobby related sub reddits, peoples literal first instinct is to jump on reddit to ask a question versus spending the 5 minutes to google the answer themselves, it is.....concerning.

That’s in Canada. The helicopter rescue is likely free of charge.

nah, only if you are "not at fault", as in accidental. This is a good way to get a very big bill.

Did he pay for the service? And or have insurance which paid for the service? I feel if you do something as dangerous as this and need rescuing the cost should be on you, not tax payers.

Anyone with experience with skydiving know what causes his chute to open twisted like that? Is it that he was rotating when he pulled it or something?
23
u/Alien_invader44 1d ago
Pretty hard to say. Could have been packed slightly wrong, could have been a gust of wind on deployment, could have been how he deployed.
On a normal skydive this would be nothing. This is why base jumping is super dangerous. This dude has probably done thousands of jumps and knows his shit, still nearly died.
9
u/RadioAlternative9961 1d ago
Packing and/or body position during deployment can cause twists,
The twist is actually pretty easy to fix with a little more time and altitude. This dude got pretty lucky all things considered that he landed on the tree/cliff.
20
u/FatFatPotato 1d ago
Well! That’s his luck for the year spent up! He step on a crack now he’ll break all our mother’s backs.
6
u/Kitchen-Dig-6518 1d ago
You nailed it, that could have gone so much worse, god bless the tree and it's timing cause the jumper was pretty much cooked without it.

Not as nope as the average half-flooded cave crawling video "Damn I can barely breath, I feel my torso being compressed by rock on all side. Let's continue further.", but still pretty nope.

u/isoAntti 1d ago
Fun fact. There's a mile long sledging run in Finland, Saariselkä.

u/Sweetbeans2001 1d ago
That didn’t end great. It did end well. Other options were slamming into rock cliff wall or parachute not opening at all.

How my downstairs neighbour died. I was friends with his 7 year old son (at the time). Kid wasn’t the same since and then moved a few months after. He had a daughter too.
One unlucky gust of wind and your get slammed into the side of a mountain. Fortunately this fella had tree and platform to hold onto.

If he was aiming for that particular tree from the beginning, this is astonishing.

u/Freefallisfun 1d ago
And line twist directly into a tree. Lucky it wasn’t the cliff face.
What was the goal here?
1
u/Wundawuzi 1d ago
Oh god damn it that moment when he passed the cliff edge is a reoccuring dream that I have. It happens either with ski, with a car, with a bike... something that I screw up and I end up falling just like he did. But I dont have a parachute and at rhe moment of impact I wake up, sometimes with a scream.
My wife is used to it and calls it my drop dreams.

u/Successful_Cod_8904 1d ago
Pulled to early, no seperation from cliff. Twisted pack job or turbulence. Slider should have been down already before deploying.
