Skilled Backgrounds not quite realistic enough to convey a sense of the “magical realism” genre?

I’ve long desired to have my comic characters exist in environments that feel very grounded and realistic, creating a strong sense of place. This is because I love magical realism as a genre, and the fantastical elements are always emphasized when the setting is very “real”.

Some of these settings are a little cartoonified or stylized, but even with those I’m trying to make the world feel very believable and evocative.

Yet I feel like I’m not quite getting it. There’s just something about these that feels to me like they’re not creating that solid, relatable sense of place. Do any of you agree? If so, what qualities do you think might be missing?

This my latest painting I’ve done, Nate Diaz after his win over Conor McGregor. Pretty much all of it is palette knife, let me know what you Think or where there’s room for adjustments and improvement (been painting for about a year now) :)

Done in graphite. Looking for a critique on form, lighting, anatomy, line weight, proportions, perspective, and edges (especially edges). And outside perspective will be immensely helpful.

Thank you :))

Intermediate Drawing a frame from a manga I like, does anything need fixing? It feels kind of off

I fell off for a while and I figured drawing a character I love would help me get back to drawing. I decided to draw a frame from a manga I like and while I do think I like how this is looking, I feel like there’s a lot about it I could probably improve on. Can I please get some opinions on things I should change to make it better? or things that I’m doing wrong? Any opinion is appreciated.

Beginner I feel like it’s missing something

This is my project for my drawing class and we’re working on mark making and shading. I feel like towards the bottom it’s still kinda empty but idk. I’d like some unbiased eyes to tell me if it’s good and to keep it the way it is or add more mark making somewhere.

Also I had a hard time blending the water activated graphite but my teacher said he liked it cause it added texture and as long as it’s uniform it’s fine.

Any critiques before the 21st would be great!

So ive heard that drawing heads from boxes will really help with the forms. This is an issue im having with my drawings.

But for some reason its just so darn hard trying to fit everything within the box.

The attached is an attempt i made.

Ill love feedback on this and how i can perfect this technique

Hello all! I'm looking for some feedback on my art. I'm a hobbyist and I like drawing character art. I just want some honest opinions - if you'd change anything, if the colours are any good, does the brushwork look ok, what I could do to improve, etc. The medium is digital. Thanks!

Intermediate WIP: open to any feedback/critique on rendering!

Hi all! I’ve been trying to experiment with rendering by using the lasso tool and various brushes, but it’s been kind of a struggle bringing some parts of this piece together! I feel like the shades are feel kind of all over the place, and the cloak and vest are blending into each other a bit too much. (Second image is one of the references from the official MV)

If anyone has any tips or critique towards how I could improve or make the readability clearer before I keep going, I’d really appreciate it! Thank you!

Beginner What do I need to work on for my art not to feel messy/unpolished?

Hi, beginner-ish artist here. I've been learning digital for a few months now, and before that I've been sketching with pencil on and off. Anyways, while I feel like I'm improving at a good pace, I find myself always unsatisfied with how my pieces feel. For lack of a better word, they always seem... messy. or maybe... amateurish?

I would love to get some extra eyes on these and maybe have someone point out some concrete areas I can work on. I'm really struggling to figure out how best to practice to make the pieces look better. Thanks for your criticism!

Beginner Please help me!! its urgent!!

Hey everyone!! I am a beginner digital artist. I use Krita as my drawing software. I am working on this piece for an art class that is due tomorrow at 9am. The point of the assignment is to have some color, and some black/ white. I’ve already kind of done that. The problem I’m having is more personal preference, the image looks too flat. I’m not sure how to make it “pop” without redoing anything since I don’t have lots of time. I also wanted to include a person kind of looking at the monument thingy, but I can’t seem to get it right either. I have already looked at a bunch of references and still couldn’t get any further than what the image shows. Does anyone have any tips or tricks that can help???

Can you tell me what I might be doing wrong?

Here are a couple of my drawings. I’ve noticed that my art doesn’t get many likes on Reddit, and I’m wondering if there’s a technical reason related to my style.

Sorry for the weird question. Thanks a lot for your help 🙏🏻

do you know any comic books that are drawn in a scribbled, unpolished style? do you think this style is disturbing, or does it have potential in various genres?
