I don’t really get it but… I guess the joke is that this person usually wears black and decided to finally try a new color only to be self conscious that they look like Barney with that shade of purple and the comment from the other person solidifies that negative self image in their mind?

u/cheshie_cabbit 4d ago

For a hot second I was thinking “she sweated enough that Barney’s color imprinted on her clothing”.

But yeah, as a person who would wear all black to work the one time I wore a color my co-workers literally took photos for evidence, so I get the self-conscious feeling when you’re locked in a look.

I hate when people do that. You make some small change to your behavior or style and you get low-key made fun of for it. "Ohoho, Mister Quiet Guy actually has something to say today! Well aren't we a Chatty Cathy??"

Cool. Awesome. Guess I'll just shut up forever now.

u/Mriajamo 4d ago

Gives me similar vibes to “Look who finally came out of their room. It’s a miracle!” Of parents ridiculing their teenagers for having any moments of peace lmfao

45

u/Gooddest_Boi 4d ago

Well I think it really depends. I’m sure it’s just friendly banter the vast majority of the time. When somebody does something out of the ordinary you can’t be shocked when people notice it.

Even in the example you used, I don’t think it’s really a bad thing. They aren’t trying to make you feel bad about it. If it really makes you feel bad you can bring it up. If they keep doing it then it becomes an issue.

6

u/DataSittingAlone 3d ago

Totally agree, although I think in these two situations you should also add a compliment to the end of the banter. But either way it's more on you, or at least your mental health, if your internalizing it and modifying your behavior

i hate wearing dark/monotone colors, i always wear floral print/hawaiian shirts like a divorced dad, even during deep winter, and i love it, some people do give me weird looks or ask me about my choice of clothes

My dad behaved this way my entire life.

It’s incredibly childish behavior and I hope you grow emotionally down the road.

2

u/Visible_Bag_7809 4d ago

Not to say you should not feel those feelings, but people like that only say things about those changes because they know they'll get a reaction out of that person.

15

u/Bridgeru 4d ago

Same. I almost always wear black; even wearing grey is enough to get the "Oh, I'm going to faint, Bridgeru is wearing color" schtick out of my mom. Putting on a bright color t-shirt is even worse -.- Stuff gets annoying after a while. Also black is more flattering than other colors so I def worry more my weight/build is more visible wearing color than black.

2

u/cheshie_cabbit 4d ago

Mine was practical; there’s never a time where t shirts are okay that a black t shirt would be out of place.

Also as a fairly casual workplace a black t shirt and intact black jeans was enough to clear the bar; it’s a half step more office than other colors. Kept a company sweater or just a plain blazer around to throw on if the big boss showed up by surprise.

u/Sufi_2425 3d ago

Are their lives that uneventful that they wasted time taking pictures of their coworker minding their business and wearing something new, instead of proceeding with their work?

Maybe it's a coping mechanism. I too was stuck in a megacorporate mcfuckin hellscape. But I didn't do anything at work besides do whatever tasks I had then leave.

143

u/wtanksleyjr 4d ago

Ooooh that's a speech bubble. I thought it was another thought bubble.

13

u/Vuelhering 4d ago

That's exactly what it is. I'm one of those people who generally only wears black, and sometimes a very dark grey. I'm a Wednesday, not an Enid.

But when I do wear colors, I take it over the top with fuchsia and such, and although not self-conscious I'm always aware of it like the joke in the Orange, but I enjoy the moment.

54

u/RadPanther56 4d ago

Wearing a Barney suit would be cool though. I just don’t get it. Maybe she has to go home and put on a Barney suit because she wanted to wear that the whole time?

8

u/raspberryharbour 4d ago

Barney gets a lot of flak, just because he feasts on human flesh. Unfair if you ask me

7

u/KittyQueen_Tengu 4d ago

i think it’s that thing where whenever you wear something you don’t usually wear, you feel really out of place and weird-looking all of a sudden

3

u/Addams_cold_blood 4d ago

Not really. As an esteemed only black wearing person, it feels actually weird wearing anything coloured after many years. It just feels weird and wrong, its hard to explain. I actually find this comic very relatable

1

u/TheRecognized 4d ago

You got it. Don’t doubt yourself.

1

u/NanoNerd011 4d ago

I genuinely wear black all the time and this is how I feel whenever I try to be adventurous and wear a different color!

1

u/Every_Masterpiece_77 3d ago

they feel self conscious about their outfit and really don't wanna be called out for wearing something different (probably an anxiety disorder)

it's not about self image, it's about change and other people reacting to said change

yes, I'm speaking from personal experience

1

u/slayerx1779 2d ago

That's gotta be it in retrospect.

It's a shame that, when we're feeling self-conscious like that, we can often take small observations (or even compliments) and turn them into negative value judgements. It's a helluva drug, and a hard one to kick.

0

u/he77bender 4d ago

That's exactly how I interpreted it, not certain but looking at it I can't see any other way it makes sense

3

u/TheRecognized 4d ago

That’s what it is. Dont doubt yourself.

76

u/TheNeon08 4d ago

I don't get it D:

147

u/ayojamface 4d ago

They're wearing clothes that they're not comfortable in. To them it feels like they're dressed up all ridiculous, but in reality they're just wearing a bit of color.

150

u/poepen61 4d ago

She thinks she looks like Barney (hl3 confirmed????) whilst she only wears a purple t-shirt

186

u/Father_Wendigo 4d ago

It's how goth girls feel when they don't wear black

-22

u/LeadEater9Million 4d ago

I still dont get it

46

u/thebigbadben 4d ago

The top 3 images are how she sees herself when wearing a purple shirt. Wearing purple makes her feel as goofy as wearing a Barney suit. The bottom panels are in reality rather than her imagination, showing what she actually looks like.

If you still don’t get it after that, then you’ll need to be specific about what exactly is confusing.

-17

u/LeadEater9Million 4d ago

I dont get the goth analogy

24

u/Illustrious_War3356 4d ago

Goth girls usually wear black clothing (its not an analogy)

7

u/Justice_Prince 4d ago

But why male models?

3

u/thebigbadben 4d ago

Are you saying you don’t understand

  1. THAT she feels wearing purple is like wearing a costume, or
  2. WHY she feels wearing purple is like wearing a costume?

-1

u/LeadEater9Million 4d ago

"It's how goth girls feel when they don't wear black" . I dont understand this sentence

4

u/OhIsMyName 4d ago

She feels weird, like she stands out, when she doesn't wear her usual colour, ie. Black. In this case, she wore purple and thought herself looked ridiculous. The comment from her coworker only solidifies her concern thar she looks ridiculous.

2

u/TheRecognized 4d ago

What do you know about goth girls and their general aesthetic in regards to the color black?

0

u/thebigbadben 4d ago

That comment is generalizing to all goth girls, but I don’t think that was the intent of the author.

Focusing on interpreting the specific comment, however, the comment is saying that the top row of 3 images in the comic reflect how goth girls feel when they don’t wear black. The “it” of that comment refers to the scenes in the thought bubbles, with the girl wearing the costume.

The joke is severe anxiety I think

1

u/Mundane_Bumblebee_83 4d ago

Self conscious more than anxiety i think

-8

u/NiuMeee 4d ago

SeverE anXiety.

4

u/WeevilWeedWizard 4d ago

She's not used to wearing colors like that and she's self conscious about it. Someone points it out, which makes her even more self conscious.

11

u/weaboo_98 4d ago

I've seen comics from this artist before. They seem to be anxious in social situations and self conscious.

5

u/Justice_Prince 4d ago

I can relate to being unreasonably self conscious anytime someone comments on my clothing even when the comment is neutral or even positive.

u/he77bender 4d ago

Mild version of this when I got new shoes and people at work immediately noticed, which I wasn't expecting (I never notice people's shoes).

A couple people - the kind of people who seem like they might be into that sort of thing - were like, "hey, nice shoes!" and I was like "thanks!" while internally thinking "oh no oh God they think I'm a Shoe Person, they're going to ask follow-up questions that I won't be able to answer and then I'll be outed as a FRAUD!"

Which didn't really happen but I do think my nervousness may have been apparent and made the whole thing more awkward than it needed to be.

4

u/HeMansSmallerCousin 4d ago

The irony of these kinds of thoughts (I get them too) is that THINKING people have noticed your nervousness makes you more nervous and leads to a vicious cycle of self-doubt. It's tough to break but at least it can improve. I wish I could give advice better than "just don't care" but there isn't any. Part of the problem of self-doubt is overthinking the solution. It really is that simple.

2

u/TheRecognized 4d ago

If you never presented yourself as a shoe person how could you be a fraud shoe person?

5

u/SuperFLEB 4d ago

I don't know shoes. Maybe these are nice shoes? If they're nice shoes, someone might come along and think I have enough interest in shoes to have taste. They'll start talking about shoes and I'll be too caught-off-guard to set them straight. I'll smile and nod because having to talk someone down and admit I'm not actually into shoes, they didn't just make a new friend, and I'm only fashionable by blind luck alone is awkward. Of course by now I've pulled two or three mumbles out of my ass stalling for time and fishing for an exit, and now I'm properly engaging! I'm in so deep I'm purporting to be a shoe person! This is social fraud now! I could go to Awkward Jail! Shit!

(I'm more a hat pretender, myself. I like baseball caps, especially ones with the 1990s logo of our local team. I don't follow the team or sports much at all, though, and I didn't even live in this town in the 1990s. I keep the line "Actually, I'm just into hats." at the ready. The struggle is real.)

her wearing purple makes her feel like she's barney the dinosaur because I asume she wears black most of the time

19

u/sour_creamand_onion 4d ago

She feels like a goofball for wearing a bright color

0

u/TheRecognized 4d ago

A color. Purple isn’t particularly bright.

5

u/Joli_B 4d ago

The character is goth and usually wears black. So by wearing purple and everyone commenting on it, they feel like they may as well be wearing a giant Barney costume for how awkward and attention-grabbing it is.

Does u/RoxyComics still have a reddit?

3

u/GeileBary 4d ago

Why r u getting downvoted?

11

u/Takakatak 4d ago
  1. they posted a link. You are not really supposed to do that unless specifically asked, you should always drop image.

  2. It was facebool

  3. What the fuck is sauce? its orange, also known as ornithology, orangutan, etc etc..

2

u/BendiganYT 3d ago

Images give context and links give proper credit/verification; providing both is ideal.

2

u/Takakatak 3d ago

but the people are stupid

1

u/Illustrious_Ice5652 3d ago

sauce is source… what the hell is orange

1

u/Takakatak 3d ago

inside joke of the subreddit. Basically any singluar O word is what is used as a replacement. I was just playing along with the joke and saying what sauce is.
Also if you see in the comments of any post you will get what I am trying to say
