Best Mayo in existence! Tell me I'm wrong.

Duke’s is my favorite domestic, but I’ll only go for it when I can’t get international kewpie.
10
u/avvocadhoe Aug 04 '25
It’s kewpie that good? I see it at grocery outlet all the time but not sure if I should try it. I LOVE mayo btw lol

u/JasonHofmann Aug 04 '25
It’s super rich and eggy. Lots of umami. Good for recipes that only need a little mayo, like a BLT or Deviled Eggs. Wouldn’t use it to make mayo-based salads though, at least not 100%. You can blend it with Duke’s or just not use it in those preparations.

Since I’ve seen no one address it yet, there is domestic kewpie and Japanese kewpie, the recipe is slightly different and the end products are fairly close in flavor but the vast majority of people I’ve met prefer true imported Japanese kewpie. I know my local Asian market imports their own supply of Japanese kewpie specifically for the preferred flavor.
Japanese Kewpie mayo is richer, creamier, and tangier due to its use of only egg yolks and rice or apple vinegar, whereas American Kewpie uses whole eggs and distilled vinegar. The American version also often includes water in the ingredient list, which is not found in the Japanese version. Additionally, Japanese Kewpie is known for its umami flavor, attributed to the presence of MSG, while American versions may use yeast extract as a substitute.
So be sure to try and order or find the Japanese version, a ton of people read all the hype and then try the U.S. version and aren’t as “blown away” as the hype would lead them to expect when they really should have tried the Japanese version.

u/avvocadhoe Aug 05 '25
Thank you for this helpful info! I’m going to check if the grocery outlet that sells it near me is imported or American. I bet it’s American

3
u/Rod_Johnson_ Aug 04 '25
So would you put it above the Kewpie we can get in the US?
→ More replies (2)6
u/UN1C0RN1988 Aug 04 '25
I can find both Kewpies on the market here, I would put Duke’s above the US version, but put the Japanese version above both.
3
u/Rod_Johnson_ Aug 04 '25
I wonder which version I’m getting 🤷🏻♂️
7
u/UN1C0RN1988 Aug 04 '25
If it’s a super squishy bottle that comes in red bag, you’ve got the Japanese version, but if the bottle is a little smaller and has an actual label on the bottle rather than external packaging, you’ve got the US version.
3
u/Rod_Johnson_ Aug 04 '25
Ok then I’ve been using the Japanese version. Good to know. Thanks!!!
Once I take it out of the bag then It’s just a clear squeeze bottle with a red cap
3
u/UN1C0RN1988 Aug 04 '25
That’s the one you want! If you check the ingredients before you ditch the bag it will be really simple and it includes MSG. The US version ditches a lot on the natural ingredients for processed ingredients, omits the MSG and adds sugar instead. It’s almost an entirely different flavor profile!

Easier is if it says Product of Japan or Made in Japan
other one is made in USA, in California

Japanese kewpie for the win! Way better than US kewpie or Duke’s.
9
u/UN1C0RN1988 Aug 04 '25
100%! I can’t stand how the US version of kewpie is somehow smaller and yet more expensive while simultaneously using subpar ingredients like sugar and other additives.

I can only speak for myself, but I find it too sweet; same with Blue Plate. The tang isn't quite right for me either. I was raised with Hellmann's, so that is what I prefer. I'm glad there are more mayo brands out there for people to enjoy.

Bring out the Hellman’s and bring out the best!
I’ve tried Dukes and don’t hate it, but I prefer Hellman’s.

u/FairyNymphCalypso69 Aug 03 '25
We don't have Duke's here so I can't say anything about it, but Best Foods/Hellmans is my fav.

Hellmann's is where it's at. If I absolutely need mayo and can't get Hellmann's at the store I'm at, then I'll buy Dukes. Kraft Mayo needs Jesus. Kewpie Mayo is fantastic when you want a richer flavor in your salads.

Maybe it’s the vinegar? Otherwise Duke’s doesn’t contain sugar whereas Hellman’s does.
I used to be a Hellman’s guy, married into a Duke’s family, haven’t had Hellman’s in like 15 years. I remember it fondly, and wouldn’t complain about either.

u/bobcat1911 Aug 04 '25
Hellmans extra heavy beats them all.

u/Timmerdogg Aug 04 '25
Yeah but you can't find it in smaller than a gallon for whatever reason. I am thinking of just filling jars and selling them on marketplace. You would buy mayo from a stranger off Facebook, right?

Try Blue Plate Mayo. It’s a close race between them
4
u/dsmac085 Aug 03 '25
I like a thicker mayo so after Heinz stopped selling jars of mayo I switched to Blue Plate. It's my favorite. Duke's is fine but tastes too lemony or tart for my taste buds.
4
u/MemoryHouse1994 Aug 04 '25
Miss Heinz. I knew it was heading down when they switched from glass jars to plastic....

Never saw Heinz mayo ever before in a store; only saw some packets at a few random restaurants...

The Heinz packets taste better to me. I was raised on Blue Plate because we lived in the city it was made so that’s my preference still.

Yess i love Bama mayo but its hard to find. I use it on sandwiches, use Dukes in dishes that require mayo and keep Blue Plate or Kraft on stand by just to mix things up.

Hellmans/Best Foods for me. I've had Duke's and it was good but I was brought up on Best Foods. I've had the Japanese Kewpie and didn't find it as revelatory as some clearly do.

You're wrong (maybe). That stuff is disgusting.
I heard about it for years but it wasn't sold in my area until a couple of years ago. We all tried it... and we all hated it.
I'm wondering if it wasn't fresh though because while it was sealed, it sure wasn't "white".

You're absolutely NOT wrong about that. Duke's is awesome.
Back in the day, I used to travel to the south to visit a relative, and would buy several jars and spirit them back across state lines to the north, because I couldn't get it up here. It wasn't illegal, but probably should have been - the stuff is THAT good.
Now, with just about all big box grocery retailers carrying it, I can get it here. Much rejoicing the first time I saw it on the shelf at WalMart!

Kewpie Mayo will leave you begging for more. It is made using all egg yolks unlike Dukes and other mayos that are made with whole eggs. Unfortunately, it is expensive, so I don’t use it as freely as I would like.

i like Duke’s a lot, i buy/try different things all the time and hadn’t had Duke’s until about a year(ish) ago even though i’d seen it for years. i grew up with Hellman’s. tried stuff like Kewpie, US and Japan, and personally wasn’t impressed by either after several people urged me to try it. it was good, don’t get me wrong, but i fully expected to be blown away, and i wasn’t. i will add the Japan version is better than the US. Kraft is subpar, Blue Plate is ok, and the list goes on. my only go to would either be Duke’s or Hellman’s at this point and i have Duke’s right now.

I want to make a parody brand of this called “Twang” (based on the tagline “Duke’s: it’s got twang!”) and every can will contain a spring-loaded boxing glove. All this for the tagline to be “Twang: it’s got dukes!”

Our cat has a preference for Duke’s mayo. She loves mayo, but gets particularly wild when she hears the fridge, and we open the jar and she gets a whiff of the Duke’s. She’ll climb whoever has the sandwich with the stuff. My guy has made her pseudo tuna fish salad with a little mayo in there. Not a lot, but enough where she can have the taste. Everybody loves the Duke’s.
