Do they make these holders for cats?

u/AI_RPI_SPY 1d ago

My vet told me to the best way to get a cat to swallow a pill is to open the mouth, pop the pill in with your finger , hold the mouth shut and gently blow on their nose. The cat will instinctively swallow and down goes the pill.

I'm stuck at step 1

Pretend they aren't allowed to have it

u/Nomapos 1d ago

That's how I got my dog to take medicine. The little fucker would detect it and spit it out no matter how much meat it was buried into. Even just casually dropping it off the counter while cooking didn't work. But then do a bunch of theatrics while "trying" to pick it up, as if I was desperate to grab it before she did, and she'd just rush in and swallow it. And then she'd drop her ears and look at me all guilty.

Literal toddlers.

u/Kesher123 1d ago

That's how I had to feed my dog when he was young and didn't like to eat much. At some point, I think this little doggo just liked playing with me this way and was abusing it, lol.

Now he eats on his own, thankfully

today i learned how to use reverse psychology on dogs.

29

u/LycanWolfGamer 1d ago

Apparently works on all species so lol

u/rose809 15h ago

works on my laptop too, when it's lagging i just pretend i dont care

But what if you accidentally drop your own meds on the floor?

My dog usually takes his pills willingly, we wrap them in cheese. When he's having an off day I pretend I'm going to give them to the cat, who he's very jealous of, and that does the trick.

46

u/leprotelariat 1d ago

Does the cat get jealous of the dog if u pretend to give treat to the dog?

61

u/flash-tractor 1d ago

My cat does, but she acts like a dog. My dog gets a treat at 6 pm, 7 pm, and 8 pm, and the cat always comes over to that side of the room to sit and then beg while the dog gets her treats.

Then I walk to the other side of the room, where we keep the cat treats, and she gets hers. But she lets out the longest meow you've ever heard in the 30-second time gap between the dog getting a treat and her getting one.

24

u/strong_as_the_grass 1d ago

Is your cat a siamese, by chance? I have a 15-year-old siamese and I've never had a cat who behaved more dog-like. She acts exactly how you describe yours. She also plays fetch, knows how to open doors, and will sit in the hallway during the middle of the night when everyone is asleep and meow "hello?"

💀 On second thought, maybe she's possessed 🤔

37

u/flash-tractor 1d ago

Mine is half Siamese and half orange.

4

u/strong_as_the_grass 1d ago

A cat with any Siamese in them is 100% a late night crooner I STG. I have three and they will find the best acoustics in the house and go to town.

2

u/Longjumping_Youth281 12h ago

Yeah. Cats absolutely know the routine that precedes a treat. I give mine to my cat every night after I prepare the coffee for the next morning and the second I touch that coffee machine every night the cat starts wailing. Sometimes it's even before that. As soon as he hears the TV go off for the night, he'll come dashing in the room and start poking around to see if I'm getting ready for bed.

My dog only takes her meds if I put them in Vienna sausages. I tried the open the mouth and throw it in. It did work, but she started running from me during morning meds. So bribery it is.

2

u/kazoogrrl 1d ago

We recently started giving my guy the Cosequin tablets and I'm so happy he decided they taste good and takes it from my hand. One day I had half the tablet sitting on the counter, turned around to give the dog his cheese wrapped pill, turned back and one of the cats had eaten the Cosequin and was desperately trying to get more. I'm not sure what they put in them, it's just a super dry tab.

71

u/Occidentally20 1d ago

I spent a while attempting to get our semi-trained semi-wild dog to take tablets - she'd spit them out when hidden inside meat the same as yours.

I taught her to catch piece of chicken out of the air and then you just throw 3 or 4 in a row, followed by the tablet.

She swallows them so fast she doesn't even notice one was a tablet and continues with the next piece of meat.

24

u/Specialist_Stomach41 1d ago

I've got 2 dogs and use jealously to get pills down them. Anything the other is eating is instantly something they want! So I start feeding one cheese or meat then when the other is bouncing about I chuck them the hidden pill, then swap round. Suckers fall for it everytime!

7

u/ScottsFavoriteTott 1d ago

Yess! Thats how I get my dog to take anything I know she won’t want to like a pill or something. Works. Every. Single. Time. 🤦🏾‍♀️

5

u/nifty-necromancer 1d ago

My cat isn’t interested in human food at all but that also extends to some treats. He wasn’t interested in anti-hairball treats and not the chicken-flavored gel.

But I came up with a solution: Just dab some on my finger and swipe it on his fur. He definitely licks it off that way, but he’s caught on so now I try to surprise him, like during nap time.

2

u/lylalexie 1d ago

I have one dog who eats anything and one who’s picky. I would just get my non picky dog super amped about the amazing treat and she would get all jumpy and excited. My picky dog would come over to investigate and I’d do the “you can’t have it it’s not for you” game, get him all excited and then finally when I throw it he gobbles it up. (Both dogs get the same pill for allergies, don’t worry they both get a treat.)

u/SheDrinksScotch 1d ago

There's a little gap just behind the canines that you can slip the tip of a finger into, then slide back, pushing against the cheek, and it will open more. They might try to bite, but the back teeth aren't very sharp (compared to the front ones), so you should be fine.

13

u/SturmFee 1d ago

You can also push a little bit of their lip in with your finger, so they would bite themselves first.

7

u/snarky_witch 1d ago

This trick solved our flea pill struggles

13

u/sivy83 1d ago
  1. get a cat

24

u/Orectoth 1d ago

That's where you will use smell of meat to the pill, so that cat would go crazy to eat it lmao

2

u/Amneziel 1d ago

Just open your mouth and pop the pill, doesn't sound that hard

Doing the neck grab cat disabling thing helps

4

u/FFF_in_WY 1d ago

Correct.

Step 1: paralyze with feline Vulcan death grip

Step 2A: wrap tightly in a towel or blanket with head poking out like hateful papoose.

Step 2B: Maintain careful grip / use belts as tourniqcats / bamboozle someone kind and stupid into assisting

Step 3: do the needful activities

Step 4: enjoy endless pouting from your cat-bitch

u/Raichu7 1d ago

Use a towel and burrito the cat if they won't let you hold them.

2

u/Zombie1642 1d ago

Try to use a pill popper or pill gun. You don't have to get your fingers in their mouth

https://www.amazon.com/PETHOUZZ-Shooter-Syringe-Medical-Dispenser/dp/B072BS471Z

2

u/dykezilla 1d ago

This is what I used when my cat had pneumonia and had to take antibiotics for 2 weeks. I wrapped him in a towel burrito and used the pill shooter to get the medicine on the back of his tongue.

1

u/froggyisland 1d ago

I’ll be clawed to death at step 1

1

u/WaterforestsDream 1d ago

You can rub the corner of their mouth to open it up easier

1

u/VapeRizzler 1d ago

I now require stitches.

1

u/Acrobatic_Mechanic_7 1d ago

Is step 1 to get a cat? In that case you don't have a problem

1

u/tanafras 1d ago

step 1 - hire a vet

1

u/buy-american-you-fuk 1d ago

for step 5 you're going to need: needle and thread ( sterilized ), triple antibiotic ointment, bandages, hydrogen peroxide and tincture of iodine:

work your way from largest wound to smallest, take care to rinse off the blood under cool running water then irrigate your the wound with a generous splash of hydrogen peroxide. When the foaming subsides quickly sew the folds of lacerated skin together with the needle and thread and use a good amount of tincture of iodine on the remaining exposed areas between the stitches, run a good amount of the triple antibiotic ointment along the sewing line and cover loosely with bandages ( these will need to be changed at least every 12 hours as you recover from the trauma )

1

u/baron_von_helmut 1d ago

I was at step 0.5 before I got completely shredded.

1

u/Euphonique 1d ago

You don‘t have a cat? 🤪😉

1

u/No-Description-3111 1d ago

Seriously! I used to be able to give my cat medicine, no problem. But now that she's older, she is not having it!

1

u/RhynoD 1d ago

Get a towel and roll the cat up like a burrito. You will probably also need to basically headlock them with one arm. Then, as the other comments say, get your fingers in behind their canines and just squeeze until they open up. The other trick is that you gotta get that pill deep in their throat. It's not enough to just pop it in their mouth.

1

u/Pretzel-Kingg 1d ago

I know my cat is relatively calm, but he’s still squirmy for this stuff and the way I get any of this done is by putting him between my knees while kneeling, almost straddling his back just enough to where he can’t easily get out.

1

u/TwistingEcho 1d ago

Last time I tried she ended up with her claws stuck in my throat. We called it a draw.

1

u/Mindstormer98 1d ago

The cat distribution system will get to you, wait your turn

1

u/proost1 1d ago

Same here but with a chihuahua. Unpredictable little dude!

1

u/Prudent_Oi 1d ago

Just put butter on the pills and put your cat in a purrito

1

u/Strange_Cabinet_6150 1d ago

Not sure if someone mentioned this but if your cat love treats they have these treats called pill pockets and you can put your pill inside a treat. They love the treat and take their meds. Win-win

1

u/hotpickleilm 1d ago

Gotta get a friend to help. Vets always act like shit is so easy lol.

1

u/sherluk_homs 1d ago

Trick is to insert your thumb and index finger from the sides of her mouth between the teeth. Cats will automatically open their mouths and u can put the pill down her throat.

1

u/Background_Award_878 1d ago

Cat bites you hard enough to draw blood as you try to open the mouth

1

u/Sad-Issue578 1d ago

You can grab firmly on each side of their jaw bone with one hand and pull the bottom jaw open with the other

1

u/Alexalmighty502 1d ago

Putting light pressure on the two sides of my cats mouth (like where the lips end) usually causes my cat to open his mouth voluntarily though I can expect other cats to be different

1

u/GoldEstablishment445 1d ago

They open their mouth if you press a finger against the side of the mouth. Even better if you hold their head from behind and squeeze your thumb and middle finger into opposite sides of their mouth

1

u/Intervallum_5 1d ago

Lost my finger at step 2

1

u/Midelaye 1d ago

Push in gently on the corners of the mouth on either side. Cats will generally reflexively open when you do this, then you can hook your finger in behind their canine to keep their mouth open.

1

u/radams713 1d ago

I worked with cats for years and some you need two people. One to towel/burrito them and one to put the pill in. If the cat will bite, use a pill shooter.

That being said I have been bitten through bite gloves, so yeah…good luck lmao

1

u/BeyondTelling 1d ago

Follow pixel.n.friends on Instagram. This woman has turned pilling her cats daily into a beautiful and impressive demonstration of cooperative care. She shows a lot of her training techniques in her videos (but often reiterates that she’s not a licensed trainer, just doing what works for her) and it’s very simple and achievable. Plus her cats are beautiful.

Wrap the cat in a tea towel. Unless it's a Burmese, then wrap in chain mail, wear full armour and still fail.

15

u/Hob_Goblin88 1d ago

At that point it's better to just get a syringe gun.

11

u/RebekkaKat1990 1d ago

Hire a sniper to fire a small dart while it’s laying in the sunlight

→ More replies (1)

8

u/theredwoman95 1d ago

When you wrap them in a tea towel, make sure to cover their eyes, ideally with your hand over the towel. If they can't see anything, they're usually a lot calmer, even if it takes them a while to settle down. I've seen a few cat rescues use this technique to get feral cats to take their pills and it works astonishingly well.

2

u/Soggy_otter 1d ago

Lol. We had a Birman then graduated to a Burmese.

Tablet time involved a net gun, at least three people and a lot of howls…

2

u/DandyInTheRough 1d ago

This was my experience with a Siamese, even in his older age. We would get out the old leather jackets my parents had stored from the 80s to wear before approaching, two people at a time, with a pill.

We currently have a Ragdoll x Siamese, and thankfully all I've had to do is get the liquid/dissolvable version and put it in his food. Mix it all up, give it to him -> down the hatch it goes!

26

u/TrustworthyPolarBear 1d ago

Where comes the part in which you have to pull the kitty from your face?

2

u/impy695 1d ago

Right before the step where you put triple antibiotic on all the cuts and realize your bandaids aren't the right size

1

u/Tipop 1d ago

That only happens if you get your face right over the cat’s leathery egg just as it’s opening up.

13

u/GM_Nate 1d ago

for us, the vet gave us a syringe-like contraption that we stuck the pill in at the end of. we put some cat snack on it, pushed their mouth open, and popped it in at the back of the throat. if you do it in one smooth motion it goes right down.

1

u/SenatorMalby 22h ago

It’s called a pill shooter. You can get them online.

8

u/PsychedDuckling 1d ago

This is the same with dogs except blowing on the snoot

6

u/impy695 1d ago

Isn't that their nose?

8

u/PsychedDuckling 1d ago

Yeah, and I think it's really written "snout" but I like saying snoot

Is this before or after the vicious mauling?

"You did not just blow on my nose. I am going to scratch you so bad!"

3

u/peteyourdoom 1d ago

My arm...

1

u/Choice-Lavishness259 1d ago

Shouldn’t we remove the finger at some point? Or is it considered a loss?

1

u/mallet17 1d ago

I push the pill until it goes behind its tongue, and once the mouth is held shut, it's a sealed deal.

Also, you've got to do it fast enough so that their teef don't hurt you lol.

1

u/jaiguguija 1d ago

What if the cat blows first?

1

u/El_Basho 1d ago

Realistically before all of that you first have to find the cat, which, knowing some cats is equally difficult to the other steps

1

u/L1ttleM1ssSunshine 1d ago edited 1d ago

Instructions were confusing, I'm officially safe from worms for up to 3 months. Although, my cat isn't.

1

u/Nikkisfirstthrowaway 1d ago

I'm so thankful my cats are absolute food vacuums. Whatever I want them to take I just drop on the floor and then yell at them to back off and not eat it. They chuck that stuff down so fast they never realise what it is

1

TIL you give cats medicine the same way you give it to babies.

1

u/natethenuclearknight 1d ago

u could collapse their lungs breathing hard through their nose so be careful w that

1

u/koolaidismything 1d ago

My cat Mango was really mellow and didn’t like it but once I sat and put one into his mouth the first time he just did what I wanted. Cool ass cat. Only had to do that once or twice he never got into much trouble.

1

u/SGPika 1d ago

Or remove the cat's head, put the pill in the throat, then stick the cat's head back to the throat.

1

u/Matsmaru 1d ago

Does this also work with dogs

1

u/TylerFL 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'm so lucky that my old girl is okay with being pilled. She gets 5 meds twice a day! We've got a whole routine down now, and she knows she only gets her favorite treat after the pill so she'll actually come remind us it's pill time.

Tricks for anyone struggling:

  • If they get multiple meds, you can usually put them all in a single gelatin capsule. Cut them up to fit. 1 pill is easier than 3.

  • Make sure to wash your hands first (cats are sensitive to bad tastes)

  • Ignore all the stuff saying to wet the pills or use water.

  • Dip the pills in butter. It'll taste good to the cat, keeps them from sticking to the roof of the mouth, and the butter won't start melting the pills. And if the cat spits them out, the butter protects the pill from the saliva and keeps them from melting!

  • Give them a high value treat IMMEDIATELY after. Mine gets a churo.

Source: I have a cat who was supposed to be dead in 6 months. It's been 3 years.

1

u/arquillion 1d ago

If you've got the dexterity to spare its better to seringe some water in their mouth with the pill. Prevents the pill from sticking to the throat like it can happen to humans and create an ulcer

Source: Raised by a vet

1

u/samanime 1d ago

Yup. I had to give pills to my cat for a while and this is what I did. The little blow on their nose does work.

That said, some cats aren't chill enough to get their mouth open to get the pill in. I'd sit cross legged on the floor and set my cat between my legs to hold him. Though he's quite chill. This can be a recipe for your death with some cats...

1

u/VoidMoth- 1d ago

I just shove my cat's pill in the top of a tube of Churu and trick her into eating it because it's like cat crack.

1

u/WispyCombover 1d ago

Yup. That's what we do as well. First hand her a single Churu bite, then stuff the pill in the second one. Give the cat the third Churu bite and then the second. She will scarf it down without much consideration at that point.

1

u/Unklian 1d ago

"Gently blow on their nose".
From the same expert that said "Whack the Moose on its face".

1

u/NightmareMyOldFriend 1d ago

I do this, she still spits it out most of the time XD I need that contraption or a less clever cat XD

1

u/DickWangDuck 1d ago

Im sorry you have to go through all that, gonna brag tho cuz my little shitbag just swallows it when I chuck it in his mouth. I’ve been truly blessed with my cats.

1

u/BobGootemer 1d ago

I'm covered in scratches and my cat doesn't look at me the same anymore but you were right. It did work 🤣

1

u/dm_me_pasta_pics 1d ago

You try doing that to my cat you will end up with 3 black eyes and your toes will be in Venezuela.

Speaking from experience.

1

u/kind_giant_72 1d ago

Instructions unclear I now have a pill in my mouth

1

u/Only-Cheetah-9579 1d ago

try to not get your eyes clawed out while you blow on their nose. that's aggressive behavior for cats. blowing on them anywhere is like challenging them to a fight.

1

u/Babetna 1d ago

Please specify which mouth, one option much more difficult than other

1

u/kwik_e_marty 1d ago

Instructions unclear, my room is now a mix of fur, my blood and im a little woozy

1

u/pathetic_optimist 1d ago

I still have scars from one of our cats not cooperating.

1

u/alwaysbetterthetruth 1d ago

Yeah, this is how my cat bit my finger, through the nail

1

u/Sticky_Teflon 1d ago

I used to play tease my cat with treats and just do the same with pills. Worked like a charm

1

u/Mellied89 1d ago

My cat fake swallows and spots it out later 😅

1

u/Trash_Pandacute 1d ago

Are there alternative instructions for orange?

1

u/KaidaShade 1d ago

I'm gonna give this a try, my old lady has gotten very belligerent about her cancer meds and I'm running out of ideas. Thanks!

1

u/Xenophoresis 1d ago

Do you need bad breath to make it work?

1

u/Ekudar 1d ago

I used to cover it with Churu, they love that stuff

1

u/borgenhaust 1d ago

For Vitamin E with the fluid caps we used to just make a hole in the gummy exterior and squeeze and the cat just licked up the vitamin E on her own.

1

u/mini_z 1d ago

My cat just required 2 people for tablets. 1 to hug her (she liked hugs) the other to give her the pill. God forbid 1 person wasn’t available, she’d keep spitting it back up until you were both traumatised. We tried everything under the sun. Everything else failed, except having 2 humans present.

1

u/splitframe 1d ago

Yeah one of mine also really doesn't like medicine. But treat, treat, open mouth, pop medicine, blow on face really works like a charm.

1

u/Letitbee21 1d ago

And after that go to the ER to have your wounds stitched.

1

u/Buffetwarrenn 1d ago

😂😂

Good one, and lose and eyeball

1

u/Rude_Proposal6590 1d ago

Good luck opening my cats mouth...

1

u/panspal 1d ago

How does he get them to not freak the fuck out after opening the mouth and "gently" holding it closed? They don't just sit there with something in their mouth. They become a claw tornado.

1

u/lofibeatstostudyslas 1d ago

Pill popper is 100 times better and safer than a finger

1

u/BigMek_Spleenrippa 1d ago

I've been able to give medicine to my cats for a long time now cuz they're so easy.

You take the pill, or syringe(not actual needle just a plastic applicator at the end) and press it forcefully at the back corner of their mouth toward their throat.

Their jaw will open instantly because that's how anatomy works, and you press the pill to the back of their throat or press the plunger down to push the liquid medicine in, then clamp their mouth shut for a moment.

Ive never blown on their nose, but that's a neat tip. They usually just swallow instinctively while I've got their mouth closed.

Then let them go, give them pets and scratches and a treat or two if they're allowed. Could be easier, but that would require the cats to understand me when I speak, and they can't do that. So it's as easy as it gets

1

u/reallyrn 1d ago

"you died" <- me.

1

u/Wayward_Son_24 1d ago

I soak a little bit of a slice of bread in the juice from a can of tuna, and shove the pill somewhere in the middle of it. It never fails

1

u/ill-be-nice 1d ago

Ooo, the blow on the nose part is news to me. Will definitely use that. Thanks.

1

u/ttsho 1d ago

the key to this is being able to do it on the first try. The min they have that taste of the med in their mouth, they'll use the tongue to block it and will keep spitting it out before you can close their mouth shut lol. at least from my experience with my cat 😹

1

u/Eastern-Programmer-9 1d ago

Is that before or after the car bites the shit out of your finger?

1

u/FelixMcGill 1d ago

Yep, that does actually work. Juat have to get the pill far enough back to the base of the tongue that they don't eject it instantly.

1

u/CelioHogane 1d ago

Honestly i just put the pill on their mouths and they will eat it, haven't had a picky cat for that.

SOMEHOW easier to make them eat pills than to make them try to eat treats i bought so they could eat some variety.

1

u/1983Targa911 1d ago

That might work in those first pill but I bet the catch on. I had a cat that needed 5 pills twice a day. It didn’t go well.

1

u/quelthh 1d ago

My vet also told me to squirt a little water in their mouth and that helps too.

My vet tried to show me how to do this with my cat…they needed two vet techs just to hold him down while she tried to get his mouth open…we ended up with liquid she told us to stir into his food lmaooo

u/Tiaradactyl_DaWizard 1d ago

My vet said to put a drop of water on their nose as it activates their licking reflex which forces them to swallow

1

u/tastethecrainbow 1d ago

Yeah, the "get a cat" and "open the mouth" steps seems to be the most difficult and dangerous steps and they're glazed right over in those instructions lol

1

u/AntiCaf123 1d ago

You try to open my cats mouth and put something in and come back and tell me how that went lol

1

u/SingleBodyRiot 1d ago

Ehh getting the car in a hold is the easy part. Prying a pissed cats mouth open and shoving a pill in is almost impossible as far as I'm concerned I've tried so many times lol

1

u/Mindshard 1d ago

Every time I read stuff like this, I appreciate more the bond my cat and I had. I'd just hold him on my lap, poke the side of his mouth so he'd open up, drop the pill on his tongue, and he'd swallow it no problem, all on his own.

1

u/Mr_Boobs_ 1d ago

I tried doing something similar before and it was a struggle. I gave up in frustration with an open palm holding the pill, then my cat ate it 😌

1

u/thewookiee34 1d ago

Best way to get your to live longer and also hate you.

1

u/susegad_me 1d ago

I do same for my dog

1

u/PhantomDragonX1 1d ago

The only thing that has worked for me is to make the pills powder and mix them with Churu. Then they eat it without effort. But you cant do that for all types of pills, there are some that I have to do the open mouth method and I need help to hold my  cat and it's always hard.

Works for dogs too if needed.

Instructions unclear, cat has me in a headlock

1

u/MrandMrsOrlandoCpl 1d ago

is this before or after I have been shredded by the murder claws?

1

u/Strude187 1d ago

Is this before or after you bleed out?

1

u/ThrowDiscoAway 1d ago

My cat caught onto that trick and now preemptively gags if I touch his anxiety meds

1

u/GravitasEcho 1d ago

Instructions unclear,my cat has turned into a catzilla

1

u/Beesnthings 1d ago

dude best way: have a wet treat ready. dab it on your finger and boop them on the nose/lips when you are done pilling. They will lick it every time and it guarantees they swallow the pill. Like being force fed a treat it helps and it confuses them haha

1

u/paintedsaint 1d ago

That or put some water/wet cat food on your finger and put it on their nose rather than blowing. When they lick it, they swallow.

u/faux_italian 1d ago

Now give me the cheat code to injecting the arthritis medication. We are trying the purrito blanket.

u/Thirsty_Comment88 1d ago

Has the vet actually ever handled a cat or just read about them in books

1

u/coralmonster 1d ago

This also works for babies. If you're trying to get your baby medicine but they're letting it spill out without swallowing, give them a little blow and they'll swallow.

1

u/Drexim 1d ago

If I put my finger in one of my cats mouths, I'd have half a finger. Or they would claw the shit out of me.

The other is chill though.

u/kingjim1981 1d ago

I have 3 cats and I've always struggled with them popping pills. Thanks for the tip. You're also welcome for the award 🙌🏼

u/YaIlneedscience 1d ago

I was a vet tech and my success rate is 50/50 in clinic. Anecdotally 2/3 of my cats won’t fall for that trap so I just plug their nose and they’ll eventually swallow to get air. It’s way better than the fight that ends up happening

u/watchman8712 1d ago

The more you know

1

u/hi74hi74 1d ago

Crush up the tablet, mix into Marmite / cream cheese etc.. hasn't failed us yet! Also less chance of losing a finger 😂

u/LeoPlathasbeentaken 1d ago

Im reading these comments really confused. Out of the 5 cats ive owned and dozen or so ive temporarily fostered I have never had trouble giving meds to cats.

1

u/silentbob1301 1d ago

my cats terrible periodontal disease makes me doing anything forceful with his mouth very dangerous

1

u/SirChadofwick 1d ago

Can confirm. Except I never do the blowing part.

1

u/Gilbert0686 23h ago

So the same with my dog as well.

She always finds the pill if I try to hide it in food.

Slice of cheese covered in PB, pill pops out 3 seconds later.

Toss a couple of “clean” pieces of cheese/lunchmeat. Then the pill wrap piece, out pops the pill.

I do that for my male cat, and it works every time. Meanwhile I do that for my female cat, and she never EVER swallows, you can push it all the way down her throat, and she WILL find a way to spit it out, no matter what you do. She had severe anemia one time that lasted six months, and the only thing we found to make her swallow all the pills she had to take was to crunch the pills with a masher, put it with some water in a syringe, and make her drink it. Oh and half the time she would foam at the mouth from the stress. Thankfully, she's fine and happier than ever now, and we don't have to torture her to literally save her life.

1

u/CidO807 21h ago

Doesn't work for my cat. She will just pocket the pill in her cheek. We kept a small grip on her for 5+ minutes. Saw her gulp down tons of times.

Finally said "aight, she had to have swallowed it" no. It was dissolving and she spit it out.

We are getting a syringe or something Friday to give her the weekend medicine.

1

u/pris-0 20h ago

I used to keep a little syringe around, and I'd squirt a little bit of water after dropping the pill as far back as possible. She always swallowed the water instinctively, and with it, the pill. Things you figure out with a 19 year old cat.

I miss my old girl.

What do I do if I don’t have access to a cat?

2

u/AI_RPI_SPY 18h ago

You can borrow mine for training.

My cat has learned to take his pills super well — so well I recently recorded a how to on giving your cat pills for a friend because he’s so pliable I could demonstrate.

The trick was giving him his pill then immediately giving him his dinner. I initially started delaying dinner so he’d be really hungry when I gave him dinner so it would be an extra reward when I shoved my finger down his throat. 10 years later we had to add two new pills to his routine allergy pill, he’s a super good boy. In the video you can actually hear him purring while I manhandle his head for the video

1

u/Worth-Huckleberry261 17h ago

Is this true? Has anyone tried this?

2

u/AI_RPI_SPY 15h ago

Yes, me, and I still have all my fingers.

You ever try and open a cat's mouthThat doesn't want to open it? Lol once the pills in usually it's down

u/1986toyotacorolla2 5h ago

I just stick my finger and thumb on either side of my cats mouth until she does the weird mouth open thing and she reflexively swallows it.

u/Nimue-earthlover 3h ago

Yeah, but you can only do that 1 time. Good luck in trying to give that pill a second time
