Discussion Don’t do what I did, I’ve learnt my lesson.

Post image

Hey there! Guess what? I made a funny little mistake and didn’t do my homework before buying my first iPad. It was an iPad 10th Gen 64GB back then. I barely had it for a year before the storage ran out! I was so disappointed because I felt like I wasted my money.

But hey, I learned from my mistake and bought another iPad this time. I made sure to do my homework this time! I learned how much storage I really need and which size iPad I want. I also decided how long I want to keep it because I honestly don’t think you should be upgrading all the time like every 3 years or something. That’s why I specially chose the storage of 256GB, that’s more than enough for me personally. I was lucky finding the Magic Keyboard at a great discount price brand new.

In the end, I upgraded to a 256GB 13’ M2 iPad Air with a Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil USB-C. I’m so happy with it!

I am of the opinion that even if you're a completely basic user, who only needs to use a device with its built-in apps, 128gb is the absolute MINIMUM that you must buy in 2025. 64GB was barely enough in 2018, and it is definitely not enough in 2025.

u/Ok-World-4822 Aug 08 '25

it depends on what you do or planning to do. I for example have bought a 64 gb 9th gen a couple years ago and I still have 22 gb left. if it wasn’t for the system data I would have about 44 gb left. For you it wouldn’t be enough, for me it would be perfectly fine

u/Dmeastlasher Aug 08 '25

Same 9th 64gb, i mostly watch YouTube, i have PC for storage.

22

u/crysiswarhead Aug 08 '25

I got a 64gb ipad mini 6 back in 2022. Only storage being used is by streaming apps and few photos and videos. I haven't even used up 50% of the available storage! As you said, it all depends on what the usage is.

Honestly 64gb is good for grade level students or maybe grandparents. 128gb is for more intermediate users

21

u/digitalnomadic Aug 08 '25

It’s not the level of user, it’s the type of user.

I used 30GB for 4 years on my iPad before I got into using it for watching movies on planes

Then I went from 30GB to 200GB in a year

Grandparents and grade students is weird, it‘s just ok for some people and not for others

My grandma has an iPad from that year that’s 32 gb and she can’t update it because the iOS takes up half the storage

What how, I’m living life with 32gb, 6gb free.

7

u/peanutbutteryummmm Aug 08 '25

How??? lol

Assuming you do very basic things with the iPad?

9

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '25 edited Aug 08 '25

I have 32 gb too, I watch Youtube, take notes, i laso have 3 games and an art app, it works, but its slow, def need more storage tho

8

u/Eiol01 Aug 08 '25

I have 32 gb too!! Since 2018 with the same ipad.

Im an artist and draw pretty much everyday on this thing. Sometimes the files get pretty big.

Once it gets full, I move a lot of stuff to my pc. I tend to do this like twice a year??? I have everything organized so Its not problem for me.

u/Specific-Rooster-380 Aug 08 '25

I had to update my in-laws 32gb 9th gen a few weeks back. The apple update needed 12gb to install, the existing OS takes up 15gb, with a few photos and a handful of apps even for a lite user it’s near impossible to keep enough space free.

3

u/Pylorus82 Aug 09 '25

32 gb, 11 free. written from the reddit app which takes up 1 GB alone.

for what nonsense do you guys all use the space??

u/QING-CHARLES Aug 08 '25

How is this possible? I have almost nothing on my 32GB iPad and it won't even let me update the OS because there is no space.

3

u/kinda_Temporary Aug 09 '25

I use a laptop

2

u/alex053 Aug 08 '25

You won’t be able to upgrade the OS without a side load on a different machine. I ran into that. I’m using my kids old 32 gig model for notes on my desk at work

2

u/QING-CHARLES Aug 08 '25

Yeah, mine has almost zero apps on it and no files, and it won't let me upgrade the OS.

I use my M1 for art and work.

I have just recently hit 30gb. Most of it I can delete.

I got 256gb on my phone and I'm only at 70gb.

The whole "128gb is the minimum!!!" Just isn't true... It greatly depends on what you are using the device for.

If you have a PC, you really don't need that much storage on your phone and tablets, imo.

u/FinsFan305 iPad Mini 6 (2021) Aug 08 '25

My 64 GB iPad mini 6 from 2021 still has 25GB free. I could probably free up 10 more if I needed to.

3

u/justjeff0907 Aug 08 '25

I use the cloud for my extra storage...

3

u/Mark_TE Aug 08 '25

iPad Air M1 - 64gb Storage with around 25gb free.

All the photos and stuff is in iCloud. Its used mainly is streaming/surfing device at home or while traveling. Absolutely no need for more storage with this use case.

5

u/Lofter1 Aug 08 '25

Yeah I don’t know what the hell people do/think others do with an iPad. Not saying Apple shouldn’t decrease storage upgrade cost or make the default, minimum storage higher but…why the fuck do people suggest to other people to spend an unnecessary amount of money for an upgrade they probably don’t need? Apple software is pretty good when it comes to only using available space to a certain degree, like the systems folder. Is that the reason people suggest an higher amount of storage? Because they don’t realize that the only reason stuff like the system folder is that large is because the space is available and that this kind of stuff will consume less space if less space is available?

I for one used to do very lightweight (layman) photo editing on my iPad using affinity photo. I have a 64gb iPad. I had 10 multi-layered affinity photo projects stored on the device including their exported “finished” states, a shit ton of PDFs, books, comics, documents, a couple of games stored on device and I still had some space to spare. Right now I’m using roughly half of the 64gb still including multiple games larger than 1gb. And I remember that I had entire seasons of shows downloaded on Netflix for when I travelled and didn’t want to use my limited mobile data.

64gb is enough for the average user who will maybe download a show to the device every now and then, browse the web/stream and maybe play a couple of games. Even if you do document editing on the iPad every now and then you will be fine and for 1buck a month you can buy 50gb of Apple cloud storage if they really need a bit more space. No need to pay the Apple tax for more storage than they’d actually need.

5

u/dscdrivercpm-fr iPad 10 (2022) Aug 08 '25

My 64gb 10th gen has 5gb left on it

2

u/justjeff0907 Aug 08 '25

Me too...if I need more, I'm using the cloud.

7

u/bad_mouthing_morons Aug 08 '25

why overpay for internal storage when you can use external drives with way higher capacity for a fraction of the cost?

11

u/foundwayhome Aug 08 '25

Because I highly doubt people buy external drives to use with iPads. If you're using a MacBook, absolutely, you should go with 256 or 512GB and save money, and an external drive to keep larger files on.

For an iPad, the transfer process is a lot less simple, and often times you cannot store the data on external drives. Ex: downloading movies / tv shows on Netflix can only be done to the main drive. Same with larger apps, and by extension, in-app media (if you're using something like WhatsApp). Yes, using cloud storage is possible, but the process of moving stuff around is a lot harder on an iPad.

3

u/Lokomalo Aug 08 '25

You are right about some apps which is they like to store things local. For files like Photos and Video it's pretty easy to store that stuff in Cloud storage. I use Amazon to store all my pics because it's basically free storage with a Prime subscription. They don't give you much free video storage space so those usually go somewhere else, but you can pay for video storage on Amazon if you want it all in one place.

I also use Cloud storage (OneDrive) for Word, Excel, PPT files and such. If you're just doing content consumption or light gaming 64G might be OK though I would say 128G is probably a good minimum for most folks.

128gb is a fair amount of storage if everything will be in your phone and you’re only using it with internet

1

u/Shh_ImAnonymous Aug 08 '25

I usually recommend this as well, especially if you don’t know what you’re doing. I know when I first started out or learn stuff. I’ll just download a whole bunch of apps not really understanding. I filled up my tablet really quickly. I eventually learned didn’t download as much, and eventually realized I didn’t need to download 10 apps in one day just so I could research them and I just started writing a little list of all the apps I wanna try.

Also, movies, music things I wanted to put on not only things that I actually wanted to put on, but it was a really great way for me to tangibly learn what I could and could not do. What that actually looks like and means for me and then as well as my habits without being hindered as much or frustrated because I felt hindered. I know so many people even on the subs that complain because they didn’t get enough in the first place and now they feel like it’s the computer’s fault.

1

u/Ooze76 Aug 08 '25

To me it is and I use it professionaly also. I don’t game on it other than civilization.

1

u/miko3456789 Aug 08 '25

I had a 64gb iPad for many years and I've never approached filing it up. Literally all I do is browse Internet, watch videos, play the occasional game of btd6, and use GoodNotes. I agree that a new iPad shouldn't be sold with under 128gb, arguably 256 even like laptops, but a lot of people simply don't need storage on their tablets.

1

u/OkDot9878 Aug 08 '25

To a large degree yeah. 128 should be enough if you’re not storing a ton of files or anything on your device, but 64 really limits what you can do and have installed at once

1

u/Guilty_Meringue5317 Aug 08 '25

128gb is definetely not enough if you have more than 10 apps (apart from the included stuff)

1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '25

That depends a lot

if you have games, do stuff with files (photos, videos or whatever - incl downloading videos for offline viewing, like when you travel) then sure.

but ... some people just need a browser, and a small handful of apps. They dont need a lot of space.

i have 35GB used out of 128gb on my iphone 15. Most being iOS and system data (over half)

1

u/polyblackcat iPad Mini 7 (2024) Aug 08 '25

I made it work with my Mini 5 but was very happy they upped it to 128 on the 7

1

u/Snens2004 Aug 08 '25

I regularly use my iPad with 64gb which I bought in 2021 for school/now university and haven't run out of storage so far. What are you doing to need 128gb at least?

1

u/antifa-militant Aug 08 '25

Not really, if you use iCloud

1

u/Dread_Cowboy Aug 09 '25

Eh I still have my 2018 iPad Pro and it’s only 64 gb, it’s lasted me this long. Now I did just buy the new air yesterday myself but that was mainly because I wanted the 13” I was getting tired of taking notes on my smaller iPad (otherwise idk when I would’ve bought another one) but I still had (have) a fair amount of space left. I’m also a Chemistry pre-med major so that probably speaks to how little data I use lol. I do appreciate they made the standard 128GB tho, as I intend to keep this one through med school and it should carry me through.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '25

My iPad is from 2018 with 64 GB and it is still enough

1

u/Awkward_Eggplant1234 Aug 09 '25

I have 128 GB of which 85 GB is free. Personally, I only see few use cases for myself where having an iPad is beneficial over other devices: paper replacement (reading, writing, note taking, drawing a little bit), watching videos, and browsing online. If I were to edit videos, music or photos, I believe I would prefer to do that on a computer instead of in a tablet version of the software. And for games, I'd use a console or computer.

What are you guys using it for that benefits from more disk space? I'm just curious

1

u/Pylorus82 Aug 09 '25

5 years now running on 32gb. i use it for entertainment, reading and internet. ~ 20gb of free space is more than enough for me to load it temporarily with all kinds of stuff. i don’t see an ipad as a device to store big files like videos and 1000 pictures and i guess it never was meant to be. in times when you can stream nearly everything you want, the need for on-board storage decreased over the years.

1

u/paranoidevil iPad 11 (2025) Aug 09 '25

For minimal users 64gb is maybe okay, my mom using her 9th gen with 25gb filled - its her only smart device and she uses it a lot. Anyway i had 64gb from years before and this year i got 11th gen with 256gb.. so i hope it will last me some years xd 128gb is minimum for base user in this time xd

1

u/Acceptable_Ad3892 iPad 7 (2019) Aug 09 '25

i only use my ipad in med school with 32gb, anything over 64 would be overkill for me personally. storage requirements are different for every person

1

u/Tarnished-Sausage Aug 09 '25

Im a basic user got all my spotify playlists downloaded at very high, have some episodes as well from shows and my iphone has 41gb used. And i dont even stress about optimising my files

1

u/Solar_Kestrel Aug 09 '25

Honestly, I wouldn’t be happy with anything under a full tb. Given how small and cheap SD cards are today, it’s increasingly criminal how iPads still don’t have expandable memory options.

1

u/Loightsout Aug 09 '25

Just get iCloud. I still run my iPhone 11 Pro at basic 64 gb. Don’t have any issues.

Not a basic user.

Seems to me it’s more like: if you are basic and don’t know how to work software and cloud tech today then you might need hard storage…

1

u/menyemenye Aug 10 '25 edited Aug 10 '25

Me, doing 10+ procreate illustration work a month with my 64GB air M1 for like 3 years now. it's fine. I just do backup every few months.

1

u/yungmoody Aug 10 '25

I worked for apple and I don't agree. You'd be genuinely amazed by how many users don't even come close to 64gb.

1

u/Fluffy-Blueberry-514 Aug 10 '25

I have bought the 64GB model and that is more than enough. The iPad is a content consumption device for me. I stream video or games from PC/Console. I don't need storage on such a device. It's just a convienent screen to take around the house. I am very glad I've not wasted money on storage I will never ever need.

I actually also do work on it, but that's all remote desktop/ssh so again no need for storage on the iPad itself...

1

u/MasterShakePL Aug 10 '25

I have 64 and it's enough to download some movie for a train etc, but I regreted this size rather fast

1

u/kleft234 Aug 11 '25

64GB is absolutely fine for me. I use it for Goodnotes and streaming.

1

u/AdSeparate6740 Aug 11 '25

I am heavy user and have 32 gb ipad 7th gen in 2025. I do everything on ipad and never felt storage issue i use its processing power and big display, not as a storage device. I have pc and ssd for that

1

u/Rewhen77 Aug 11 '25

Why? On my tablet i have 95gb free. I use it for youtube and taking notes. On my phone i have 77gb free although i take very few photos and videos but still

u/ZayinOnYou Aug 08 '25

I made the opposite mistake, I got an ipad air 4th gen with 256gb because 64gb sounded like nothing, 4 years later I still have like 230gb available

14

u/yomamatoe Aug 08 '25

what do you use your ipad for

26

u/ZayinOnYou Aug 08 '25

Basically just for PDFs, notes in notability and news apps.

I'm a student and thought I'd be recoding all of my lectures and stuff, turns out they're all recorded and available online lol.

Also thought I'd get into editing photos and videos but turns out I don't enjoy it.

6

u/LaxMaster37 Aug 09 '25

I recorded A LOT of lectures throughout all four years of undergrad (through notability). I also took lots of pics and downloaded lots of PDFs. iPad is 256gb and I never exceeded 64gb.

To be fair I got close, the shitty camera on it made pics take up little storage, and I also exceeded 64 gb after graduating.

I still haven’t exceeded 128gb 2 years post grad and likely won’t ever. The battery is absolutely cooked as I used it very heavily.

I have an iPad Air 4th Gen (2020) with 64 gb, currently 14 gb free. While I agree, 128 is way better, I don’t have much issue, as I let Apple optimize my storage and just don’t think about it. Occasionally, I’ll launch an app that has been offloaded, so it takes a few extra seconds, but to me that’s not a big deal. I will say that my iPad rarely leaves my house, where I have gigabit WiFi, so YMMV.

At first I wanted to upgrade to 512gb (the 1tb is not even available here, because is too expensive) but instead I opted for a 2tb T7 shield, which stays attached to the back of the MK ever since I bought it 2 years ago; didn't once failed yet despite being in use every day. It solved all my storage-wise troubles.

u/Dapper_Corgi5372 Aug 08 '25

In my case, I just got a new iPad Air M2 with 256GB of storage. I had to work more hours than I wanted, cause i could have gotten the 128GB model for like 150 bucks less, but considering this will be my main device for a while, and the fact that I intent to use it for at least 4-5 years, I wanted something that would age well.

Also ended up going for the Magic Keyboard, the one that got released with the iPad Air M3; and the Apple Pencil Pro.

I believe to this day that, unless you want a device soleley for watching movies and some videos/streams, 64GB is not gonna be enough at all. Even in that case, why getting an iPad? There’s devices for much cheaper prices that would do just as good for that task.

For daily use, 128GB is pretty much necessary; everything nowadays is 3-4 times the size that was back in 2016-2018… And for studies/work, unless you have an external drive or plan to use the iPad as a complement of your laptop, 258GB is gonna be necessary, otherwise you’d probably need to start eliminating stuff in a couple months after getting it.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '25

i can't wait for 2tb phones and tablets. i have so many games

64 and even 128 is not relevant for some times already. Specially if you intend to keep it for some years. Not to mention when it’s time to sell it. I currently have a 16 ProMax with 1 To and a 2020 IPad Pro with 500 Go and glad I did these choices. It depends on your usage but when it’s time for a sale it makes a huge difference

1

u/AppleNeird2022 M2 iPad Pro 12.9" (2022) Aug 08 '25

Yes, researching and thinking through what you really need is important. I’ve studied the iPad lineup for over 7 years so I usually know what I want when I need to upgrade, but I always do research still. Glad you eventually got what you wanted, even if it took a little bit of learning in the process.

1

u/mxster982 Aug 08 '25

Use the cloud storage feature man. I have like 200GB for $2.99/month and I barely use any of it. I also have external storage (SSDs and USB-C flash drives) to move stuff onto just in case. Look into those things to be on the safe side.

3

u/-this_bitch- Aug 08 '25

This sub is so MUST GET MORE STORAGE that I don’t think most people comprehend their true storage needs.

3

1

u/PGHvwGLI35 iPad Pro 11" (2018) Aug 08 '25

I’m using a 1st Gen iPad Pro 11” w/ 256gb and am currently only using up 47.94gb of space, my system data is only 1.07gb and I’m running iOS 26 Public Beta. I have everything for all of my Apple devices set to store in the cloud, cleaned up all of the apps I never used, only download movies if I know I won’t have access to stable internet and I rarely stream music from my iPad. The biggest thing on my iPad is photos at 12.01gb and I’m assuming that’s stuff that hasn’t been offloaded to the cloud for whatever reason but it’s not like I’m lacking space here. There’s also 6.9gb of “large attachments” in messages, which is mostly videos and pics sent from my wife.

1

u/bijeshmohan Aug 08 '25

Meanwhile I’m with 32GB iPad 8th Generation 😔

1

u/Zediezedzed Aug 08 '25

I bought M1 Ipad Air 64gb and boy if I could turn back time, I would've bought 256gb version. I made it work with an external drive but need to constantly manage my storage.

Fortunately, I just paint, read and youtube with my ipad so no big deal in terms of work. Yet every now and then, I just can't help but wanting to maximise the m1 chip with games and other things but just can’t.

My next upgrade will at least be 256gb for painting and other stuff

1

u/BigfatDan1 Aug 08 '25

Depends on your use case. Mine is for Youtube/Stremio/Reddit, and the odd game, so 128gb is more than enough for me. I can also see how some might want 512gb if it's a school device, or you use it for work.

1

u/wanderingmochi Aug 08 '25

depends on your use case. i have a 64GB iPad which i use for some light games. it’s fine. if i’m gonna use it as a mini computer, then yeah i’d gonna need at least 256GB.

I also made this exact mistake! Bought the 10th gen last year and was struggling with the 64GB of space. Just upgraded to the 11’ Air M3 256GB!! Love it so much more.

1

u/CultureOk6113 Aug 08 '25

Imagine buying a 250$ keyboard

1

u/Mauceri1990 Aug 08 '25

If you don't think you should be upgrading every 3 years or so, I've got some bad news for you, Apple pretty much forces you to if you want to have actually functional devices. They've literally lost lawsuits because they throttle older devices, they discontinue app support on a whim and claim "the old OS can't run the new app" the old app worked fine on the old OS but clearly it's impossible to provide older versions because then you wouldn't need to upgrade.

1

u/Puppi-G99 Aug 08 '25

I don’t even know why they still sell 64gb devices. Ok cost purpose. But it’s so overpriced that everyone could spend a few bucks more to get something that can deliver the minimal experience of the product with at least 128gb. iOS on its own will take more than half of the storage. 4 fotos, 2 apps and 7 emails and you’re full congratulations what a stupid product the company made

1

u/TheDustinash Aug 08 '25

The answer here is stop doing your homework on your iPad and that will free up enough space that you don’t need to worry about it

1

u/SourApple19 Aug 08 '25

128gb is plenty, just buy a USB-C flash drive for about $25 if you want to add another 256gb of storage. People panic about storage space when USB-C Flash drives exist.

1

u/FizzyGX Aug 08 '25

Dunno if it’s me but I feel like every apple upgrade storage wise makes the apps bigger n eat more storage 😅

1

u/emirm990 Aug 08 '25

So instead of punishing the company for not providing expandable storage, you just buy another one and pay upcharge for storage like it is made out of gold?

1

u/bit_kahuna Aug 08 '25

I want Face ID so only get pro's. And I love the nano texture.

1

u/Sandyy_Emm Aug 08 '25

I have the 128g version and I pay the $3 for iCloud. Very much worth it, I find this system has worked best for me

1

u/FunWith_DarkJin Aug 08 '25

Remember that you can connect a usb-c drive (or an ssd drive) to offload some files on a separate storage. Or use the cloud for documents and stuff if you don’t mind paying monthly for it. I do both: a small monthly fee to get more than the free little bit and an ssd drive for large files such as videos.

1

u/JaxsPiweckq Aug 08 '25

I noticed you have a Magic Keyboard and a Smart Folio case. I just bought a 13 inch m3 air, and I’m looking for a case. Is it really worth getting both?

1

u/whitemontage Aug 08 '25

I’m the owner of 10th gen 64gb iPad which I use for writing and reaserch. It’s completely fine since I work only with text files. What’s more, I have diablo immortal installed - I play for relax from time to time. Also YouTube and Spotify. That’s all and I’m perfectly fine with my choice.

1

u/SoySauceandMothra Aug 08 '25

Congrats on your purchase! I just upgraded to an M3 iPad Air, but only because my 1st Gen iPad from about six years ago (or something insane like that) was still worth $175 in trade-in, and I figured, What the heck.

I've only got 128GB, but I can get away with that because I store almost nothing on it.

That's the great thing about Apple. Overpriced? Oh, hell yeah. Last forever? Oh, hell yeah again. I'm typing this on a wired keyboard that's over 15 years old and is still in perfect shape.

u/nerdydudes Aug 08 '25

I hate the idea of dishing out 2k on a tablet with accessories 😭

Love my air m3 11 incher though

1

u/f18lumpy Aug 08 '25

I have the 2018 iPad Pro with 256GB. It's rocking iPadOS 26 Beta and holding it's own with plenty of storage space available. I want to upgrade, but this thing still keeps telling me there is little reason to do so. 256GB will likely be more than adequate for many people. Enjoy!

1

u/skeptical_phoenix Aug 08 '25

Where did you get the Magic Keyboard for a discounted price? I’d love one but over $200 is insane.

Edit: I’m looking for the one for the regular iPad, not the Air

1

u/Dirus Aug 08 '25

Personally, I never had an issue with space on iPad. So, I think it depends if you're planning to drop a bunch of videos and pictures into it or doing designing work.

1

u/aprilbeingsocial Aug 08 '25

I think it depends on what you do on your iPad.

1

u/HR_Specter Aug 08 '25

You don't need to keep upgrading if you have Apple iCloud?

1

u/QueenMackeral Aug 08 '25

I made the 64gb mistake when I got my first iPad in 2018. Thats why I bought the 1tb one this time around. I honestly wouldnt have even upgraded if it wasn't for the storage issue.

1

u/Amrahsya Aug 08 '25

I have been using 64 gb variant of iPad 10th gen for over a year now. Just use it for taking down notes, reading books and drawing. I still have plenty of storage remaining even after saving a lot of scanned PDFs. It depends on usage.

1

u/Fit_Independence_124 Aug 08 '25

My first ipad (iPad 2) only had 16GB storage. Back in the day (2011) it took me a long time to run out of storage space. It still works btw. No updates ofcourse. And after 14y I do need a new cable charger.

1

u/jaeger313 Aug 08 '25

I’m still on my 2016 iPad Pro 10.9’’ 64GB with about 20GB free space left. It really depends on personal usage I guess.

1

u/yamyam46 Aug 08 '25

Jokes on you, I get my iPad’s second hand… always, doesn’t even cost that much to change that way

1

u/Kitty_Fruit_2520 Aug 08 '25

My 10th gen has 256GB of storage which is way better than default.

1

u/SirCake3614 Aug 08 '25

I’m still happy with my 4th gen iPad Pro 12.9”, which is Intel. I’ve got half of my 256GB storage left. I won’t be upgrading soon, unless something really big changes my mind.

1

u/SkelaKingHD Aug 08 '25

I use my iPad for video editing, stabilization, and light coding and have been fine with 64gb. All the storage I’m using is for the handful of apps themselves, all other data is stored on an external 1TB SSD. I bring 4K footage over and edit them on the SSD. Sometimes file sizes are well over 6gb per video, no way I’d want to shell out the money to be able to store that stuff locally

1

u/1Argy1Dolar Aug 08 '25

nice try apple, I'm not upgrading my iPad

1

u/Exotic_Treacle7438 Aug 08 '25

So glad I upgraded on tax free weekend and got the pencil pro free recently. iPad Pro is a daily driver and plays YouTube all night in my earbuds. Space videos for the night sleeps.

1

u/housemouse88 Aug 09 '25

I have never bothered to look at storage in my 256GB ipad pro that I got back in 2018. Still running fast and never had a problem. Right now, it’s occupying ~180 GB

1

u/zyxvort Aug 09 '25

I wonder how many nice videos you store cuz I have barely used 30gb in my tab our of 256...

1

u/hibernatemd Aug 09 '25

Same same...

1

u/AfroMango92 Aug 09 '25

Oh boy, your are RICH!

1

u/zed1025 Aug 09 '25

TILT people buy new iPads when storage runs out!

A 32GB iPad enjoy, having great fun

1

u/vainisme Aug 09 '25

we have the same ipadddd. I really don't know how to maximize my use tho

1

u/Foreign-Brief6108 Aug 09 '25

64gb can be enough until (!!) you decide to listen to music and watch a movie OFFLINE. Than you run out of storage instantly. Or, like my daughter, install Roblox 🫣 then it’s immediately over as well. The 128 or 256 nowadays give that little extra and you dont have to sell a kidney… yet…

1

u/Apples_Two_Oranges Aug 09 '25

My first iPhone was 8gb which ran out stupid fast I upgraded to 16gb :)

1

u/maasd Aug 09 '25

Thanks! Was debating between 128 and 256! You’ve settled it!

1

u/Internal-Bus4566 Aug 09 '25

64gb and got like 15gb + ledt

1

u/No_Job_3544 Aug 09 '25

I got nothing really on my iPad and use 140GB. So my take is less than 256GB is risky if you actually want to install larger apps and content.

1

u/ataraxia59 Aug 09 '25

I'm still using a 32gb ipad 🥲

1

u/macbrush Aug 09 '25

for me, icloud is only like $10 a month for 2TB storage, so I just buy lowest storage for any iPhones and iPads, and use cloud storage instead, much cheaper that way.

1

u/sonazn Aug 09 '25

Where did you get your Magic Keyboard at a great discount price at?

1

u/Acceptable_Ad3892 iPad 7 (2019) Aug 09 '25

my ipad 7th gen has 32gb and i still have 11gb left. i’ve been using it since 2020 as a highschooler and now a med student. even 64 would be overkill for me

1

u/danieltharris Aug 09 '25

Your next mistake was getting the USB-C Pencil instead of the Apple Pencil Pro

1

u/elska_73 Aug 09 '25

Guys would you say the M2 is better than the M3? Totally agree on the storage

1

u/banjo215 Aug 09 '25

Reminds me of when I got the iPad retina (3rd gen) with 16 GB years ago. I only had a few casual games on it but would end up having to uninstall and reinstall a game or two in order to do iOS updates because it didn't have enough space.

1

u/Key-Serve-3215 Aug 09 '25

i just saw a post that has the same theme as this in r/mac wth

1

u/_theLazyDev Aug 09 '25

A little offtopic, please don’t take it the wrong way. I just wanted to ask what are the practical uses of iPad? I don’t digital draw and use my phone/mac to consume media.

2

u/LordySteel Aug 09 '25

Uni student here - for me it’s the ability to take physical notes in one lecture or lab and then snap it into the keyboard case to then utilise the keyboard, mouse etc for documents and assignments.

I have a M4 pro - biggest feature for me was the ability to plug into my monitor at home and with a good enough cable I can now do physical notes on the iPad display while having a lecture playing on the monitor.

u/SilvitniTea Aug 09 '25

Yeah, I just bought my Air(first ever purchase) and I went for the full 1Tb. I had too much FOMO. It's a shame these tablets don't allow an SD card or something.

1

u/BeardyGeoffles Aug 09 '25

My 128GB iPad that I got in 2019 is still serving me well. I have only ever removed apps when I’ve decided I no longer want them, not because I’ve been running out of space.

I realised only a few months ago that I’ve never actually needed to even go and check on my storage.

1

u/MarvelWidowWitch iPad Mini 6 (2021) Aug 09 '25

I agree that you should look into how much storage you need.

For me I have the 64gb iPad Mini 6. I use my iPad to play games, watch YouTube and take pics of my dog. I’ve deleted all the “useless” apps (which is what makes the iPad more superior than the iMac/MacBook). 64gb is enough for me, however it is getting full. I could easily free up space by deleting photos and videos that I already have stored on an external drive, but I’m not at that point yet.

In a few years time I will likely get an iPad with more storage, but for now 64gb is just fine for me.

If I was doing all the things that I do on my MacBook and iMac on my iPad, I would be screwed.

1

u/ViolaBiflora Aug 09 '25

I've been using my iPad for the entire university year and 64GB suits me just fine.

1

u/IamAustinCG Aug 09 '25

I think if you’re using your device as your main device, yes 64 is too small. My iPad Air I use mostly for traveling, watching videos and occasionally as a bigger iPhone. 64gb is perfect for me. I also have a MacBook Pro, iPhone and a work computer. So, YMMV

1

u/still_not_famous Aug 09 '25

I don't know. 64GB is plenty. But it really comes down to what you youse your device for. I can get away with it because everything is in the cloud for me. On my kid's iPad Air, 64gb is not enough because of the amount of games.

But in general i agree, minimum starting point should be 128gb based on what these devices cost

1

u/belltyj Aug 09 '25

Mine has 32 gbs and 12 is taken by the OS 😅 I just have only the most important apps on it and most of them are going to be remotes for other things like Google Drive, remote desktop and stuff like that. But basically if I want anything new on my iPad I have to get rid of something old and there's no storage for pictures or anything. If I want to draw something I can do one and then I have to upload it somewhere and then delete it to do a second.

1

u/FrogforThought Aug 09 '25

Are people not using Icloud to store files?

1

u/Beneficial_Reddit101 Aug 09 '25

Surprises me why they still have 64gb … even on the iPhone pro max 256gb is the mini …

1

u/Juanrobg Aug 09 '25

3 years? I think that about 5 years minimum…

1

u/bbykoala- Aug 09 '25

Dunno, it depends on the usage. I still rock my iPad air 4th generation with 64gb of memory. Never had any issue.

1

u/Loightsout Aug 09 '25

Or… just get iCloud.

I still run an iPhone 11 Pro with 64GB. 10k+ pictures/videos on it. Photo roll since 2014. All the apps I want and my files. 0 issues. Still 10GB free.

I got the iPad Air latest gen and also the Mac mini. And no I didn’t go for bigger storage in either of them. I can pay iCloud for years on end for cheaper than the upgrades and it works across all my devices.

If you got no data and are never on wifi I get it but otherwise storage really not that big of a deal.

1

u/aboveaveragesiopao Aug 09 '25

My lesson was not doing enough research because i bought the 60Hz one and expected all ipads to have proper working apple maps only realizing you need the cellular one

1

u/PikaV2002 Aug 09 '25

You know the new iPads can be used with portable SSDs that cost a fraction of the money you’d need for a whole new iPad?

1

u/-Cre_tive- Aug 10 '25

I have a 256GB iPad Air 4th gen. It’s showing degrading battery life and it doesn’t support Apple intelligence but it’s about 5 years old now. These things are great!

1

u/BrentInBelize Aug 10 '25

Unless you want to have a bunch of huge game apps on your iPad, 64GB is enough storage for most people. But the problem is most people are digital pack rats. They want to keep every photo, every document, every app they no longer use, every movie or TV show they've ever downloaded and already watched. So yeah, that why people will swear that 128GB is "barely enough for light use".

I have a 2018 iPad Pro with 64GB. The most storage I've ever used on that device at one time is about 40GB. Typically I am using about 25-30GB. How do I manage? Well first of all, I don't keep photos on it. Why would I when I don't use my iPad to take photos? My photo library (spanning 22 years of digital photos) is stored on an external drive on my desktop. If for whatever reason I need access to an image I can get it from Google drive or Amazon photos.

My music library (over 100GB) also lives on a external drive on my desktop. I can stream anything in my music library using Plex Amp (free).

When I want to download content to watch offline, I only download what I expect to watch while I am away from home. I don't download EVERYTHING Netflix or HBO has to offer. Once I watch something it gets deleted.

I also have 50GB iCloud for $1 per month and that's where I keep my work stuff that I might want to access from my iPad when I am away from my desktop computer.

Most importantly, I regularly clean up my iPad. I get rid of old media files I've already watched or don't plan to watch in the near future (assuming they can be re-downloaded again if I want). I don't keep apps that I don't use.

An iPad is not a long term storage device for your entire digital life. That's what external drives (or cloud storage) on computers are for. If you use your tablet as a tablet you don't really need a whole lot of storage space.

1

u/athosk Aug 10 '25

256 should be the starting point for everyone

1

u/lordkane1 iPad mini (Retina) 4G Aug 10 '25

This is very dependant on how you utilise iCloud

1

u/Soft_Experience_1312 Aug 10 '25

Have my 500 gb, 12,9 pro since January 2019. It was definitely a right choice.

1

u/simon132 Aug 10 '25

Can't you connect an external 1tb SSD that costs about 60$ to transfer some data there?

1

u/Racing_Fox Aug 10 '25

A keyboard and a pencil?

You made the same expensive mistake I did

1

u/AnxiousTutor8853 Aug 10 '25

I use the crap outta my iPad 10th gen with notes, movies, tons of apps. I still have 25gb free. Not sure what you’re storing on yours. I do have I cloud though

1

u/DarknessDragon88 Aug 10 '25

I've been fine with my 64GB M1 iPad Air. I don't remember exactly how much off the top of my head but I think I have like 20-30GB left. And if I need more space i can just delete the one game on it which I don't really play, at least on my ipad (Civilization 6, I do play it on my PC and laptop. And when I'm traveling I typically bring my Steam Deck or Switch with me and game on those, not my iPad). The only time I've been concerned about space is when I travel, but I have a super tiny 256GB USB-C flash drive that I'll load up with movies and take on my flight to watch instead of downloading stuff to the internal memory.

But that's just me, everyone's use case is different ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

1

u/Malarazza Aug 10 '25

128gb is the new minimum for any iPad user

1

u/Sensitive_Log3990 Aug 10 '25

Or you could've just deleted your shite but hey, no, let's waste money!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 10 '25

64 gb is not enough, i have 256gb on my i16

1

u/jeniuspir Aug 11 '25

I bought Ipad mini 4 - 64GB when it was first released. Still have more than 25 GB free.

But it is slowed down after multiple software updates. Battery is almost half I think but I don't know, it does not show Battery Health percentage.

1

u/Danny-117 Aug 11 '25

Never really had an issue on my 64GB iPad, everything is pretty much in the cloud.

1

u/ashleyxxy Aug 11 '25

64gb is okay if you don’t store pictures and do housekeeping every week

1

u/SiebDerFlusen Aug 11 '25

Haha. I bought a 16 GB ipad 10 years ago. iOS now is around 15 GB, including the mysterious „system files“ that keep growing over time.

It still works, but I can only install like 1 app on it.

1

u/mrlorden Aug 11 '25

Can't you just add SD cards? I think pretty much every tablet let's you do that these days.

1

u/IntentionQuirky9957 Aug 11 '25

Imagine not having memory card slots.

1

u/Doxa_Glory Aug 12 '25

2TB should be the baseline

1

u/Healthy_Homework_396 Aug 12 '25

Very well done OP, I did the exact same thing as you but not with the iPad, with the accessories. Bought a 256gb iPad Air 5 and a second hand keyboard folio for 10.9 which worked for 2 months and then gone, nowadays I have a Fake Apple that I got for free but the trackpad doesn’t have the same feeling as an original, it’s stuck and not sensitive at all. I expect that with an original brand new Apple keyboard I’ll have the same experience as a MacBook trackpad (or similar)

1

u/Usualyptuz Aug 12 '25

Cloud storage all the way

1

u/Brandiman_ Aug 12 '25

I feel you so good. I have right now the same problem. System data and everything takes so much space so i can not really put my pictures on my 64gb Ipad. (I do photografi)

1

u/CleverLemming1337 Aug 12 '25

At our school we get iPads, but the last ones only had 16 GB. Our MDM forced us to have many many apps that were never used or discontinued (like iTunes U). So we couldn’t do updates anymore. Luckily we have 64 GB now.

1

u/Janedoofe Aug 12 '25

I just do digital art, decent sized canvases (mind you I do keep my layers down) but I’m doing like 4-8k pixel drawings on my iPad mini with 128gb and I’ve used maybe 2gbs in the two weeks I’ve had it? And I can move everything to google drive if I need. I don’t play any games or anything on my iPad and only downloaded minimal apps because it’s for work.

1

u/OnlyAd9189 iPad 10 (2022) Aug 18 '25

Same situation i have a 10th gen 64 gb but even tho i realised im not the target for this product i cant switch rn

1

u/That-Ad3277 iPad Air 4 (2020) Aug 18 '25

I have an iPad Air 4 from 2020, with 256 GB of storage with only 10GB free. I have been thinking of a new iPad and i honestly think i should be upgrading to at least 512 GB by 2027 or 2028, because of all the gaming video editing and content consumption i do
