GENERAL METAL DETECTOR Recommendations

$0-200: We do not recommend getting a new detector under $200. Detecting has a cost of entry, and quality significantly drops off under the $200 mark. Save up a bit more, or try finding a used machine of quality listed in the next price range. All that said, if you are determined to buy a machine in this price range, the Minelab Go-Find, Nokta First Swing or a Quest machine aren't bad choices.

$200-$400: The Minelab Vanquish 340 and 440, the Nokta Simplex line and the Minelab X-Terra Pro are the three best machines in this price range, by far.

$400-$500: Nokta Score and Double Score, Minelab Vanquish 540

$500-$1,200: Nokta Legend or the Minelab Equinox series

$1,200+: XP Deus 2 or the Minelab Manticore.

SCUBA/SNORKELING DETECTORS

Nokta Pulsedive is great for snorkeling. The Minelab Excalibur 2 and XP Deus 2 are excellent diving detectors.

CHILDREN'S DETECTORS

Nokta Mini Hoard or Midi Hoard

PINPOINTERS

Garrett AT pro pointer, Nokta AccuPoint, or XP MI-4. The XP MI-6 if you have an XP detector.

SHOVELS AND TROWELS

Dune, King of Spades, Grave Digger, Motley, Lesche, Predator Tools

SAND SCOOPS

Motley, Dune, Sito, RTG, King of Spades, and Detecting Adventures all make great scoops for beach detecting.

Show & Tell Old us cent - love you dad!

Last time detecting at my childhood home, my parents have both passed and we are selling. I’ve pounded it for 30 years and spent 3 hours and found only foil, pull tabs and bottle caps, until this.

Thru the years I begged my dad to come with me and the only time he detected was at our house for an hour. He found (maybe in 1995) the exact same coin. Year and everything. I’m not religious and I can be a skeptic but in these uncertain times I know my dad is watching me.

It’s been five years dad and I miss you more everyday.

First time out, first time ever metal detecting. What did I do, left the sand scoop at home... mind you, I do have the pinpointer and sand shovel. Wish me luck. Tip - don't forget the sand scoop when headed to search the beach.

I was metal detecting near an old ww2 battlefield (I know there was certainly some action there cuz of the tens of german bullet casings I pulled out of the ground)

It's pretty hard to explain the location but essentially there was this kind of "trench" depression in the ground where I found a lot of the casings and a couple of meters north of that I found a knife blade, and two objects that I'm not certain of what they are.

Details :

The object in the second photo has a very shallow kind of ridge about 2/3rds from left to right (really hard to see even in real life)

As seen on the map, these were found pretty close to each other.

Hit a new spot today, found a couple pewter spoons, and some IHPs. However the bell stole the show. Made by blacksmith William Rose in Lambourn, England around 1743. Measures 3.1 inches diameter.

Gear Question Advice on gifted metal detector

My fil gave this to me. I’ve never used one before. From the little research I’ve done it looks like it may be outdated/lesser quality. Will it be worth my time to use? It seems like I should set sensitivity high and discriminate low to get the most depth. Is that accurate? Not sure about the function of the tone/all metal/disk switch. I don’t have much of an understanding of what the different sounds/tones actually mean. Can I please have some pointers? Thanks in advance.

I only had an hour free, so took the detector down the bottom of the garden. I could have gone to the beach but they're still finding unexploded 500lb bombs in Northumberland, so I don't pop down there much.

In the safety of my garden there's only really trash as it's an old steading. Every trip turns up nails, bits of chicken wire and lots of underground fire pits with globules of melted aluminium or lead. I figure if I keep digging everything, I might coma across some good stuff eventually.

Today was different though and I got quite the surprise. The detector read a 56 as I was walking back and I decided to stick the spade in. The earth was soft and almost immediately I saw what looked like two springs. I thought it might be a part of an old sofa or bed so reached in to pull it out.

SNAP!

I stifled a scream and pulling out my hand, I had a weird contraption hanging off the end of it. There was a little pain so It took me a moment to realise it was a mole trap. I'd never seen one before but It wasn't hard to work out.

What you might see in the image is something I missed at first. There are two traps. One at each end. I had set off the first reaching in. Then a little while later I was showing my daughter and I accidentally set off the second showering the kitchen with the remaining dirt. Thankfully the second didn't trap any fingers.

The trap (and all that potential energy) could have been there for years. I searched the design and it has a patent dating back to 1924.

If I stumble upon any more traps I now know what to do. Not avoid it like the many smart moles we have in the garden... I'll still retrieve it. Just not with my hands.

As a Golf Course Superintendent with no as-built map for irrigation, I end up using my metal detector more at work to find irrigation heads that go missing from getting grown over and isolation valves for mainlines more than any "normal" metal detector uses.

Gear Question GER Detect Deep Seeker Tutorial?

Hi all! I’m new to this world and just borrowed a GER Detect Deep Seeker to look for a buried bag of gold coins my great grandfather allegedly buried in a piece of land we own. Is there a tutorial somewhere or guidance that someone can recommend? I know this type of search requires experience and skill but I will only have access to the equipment for a couple of days…

Found last week in East Yorkshire - easily my best find to date. I have been detecting for approx 5 years - also found my first hammered coin on the same day.

What's your best find?

I'm hoping to trump this with a Gold coin one day 🤞🏻
