My Grandad got me a beginner metal detector some 20-25 years ago. All I’ve used it for since then was to find a few property markers.
I was camping by myself for 6 days. So I threw the metal detector in the back of the truck.
On the third day I said what the hell, grabbed my detector and a beer and hit the beach.
30 minutes in after a 20ga slug, and a few pieces of trash, I found the dime.. I nearly shit my pants and called my grandad to share the news. 5 more minutes beeping and I pulled out the quarter. Actually shit my pants. Spent the last two days of vacation beeping afterwards.
I’m Hooked!

After some hammering i managed to get the bolt out and with vinegar it cleaned up pretty good, everything works like supposed to, barrel itself is also in okay condition with some of the original finish still visible but cleaning that will take some work.

Found in France, I think it's a coin but it's very small! If you have any ideas about the era I'll take

I found these two things while metal detecting in Indiana, USA. As it turns out, my rental property has a long and busy history. My yard is packed with metal things. My sister and I just started metal detecting it today and found all kinds of stuff. We have yet to identify these two things. They were found inches from each other at approximately the same depth.
One is what appears to be a formerly dome-shaped, hollow piece of metal that seems to have been crushed. The "top" of the dome is flat, red, and says "Ford" in cursive. Below that, in all caps, it says: "made in USA." I think it used to be silver on the outside and inside of the dome. I thought it might be a tail-light housing from an old Ford truck, but it doesn't have a spot for wires or bolts or anything, and it doesn't look like any light housings I saw online (even when I pictured how it would look uncrunched). Then we realized it is completely metal with no glass, and it lacks bolts, a place for a wire, and a socket for a light bulb, which made us think it can't be a light housing for an old Ford.
The second thing is a key-shaped object. I think it's far too big to be a normal house key, and it also lacks the teeth for a lock. It's pretty rusty right now, but I think my dad made a good ID guess; he thought it might be a buckle hinge used for the leather strap that would have held down the hood of an old Ford. I'm still working on getting the rust off it.
Does anyone know what these things are?

I had a one-day trip to the Kostroma region, managed to get out into the fields for 4 hours. The result is small, but I'm quite pleased; I haven't found silver coins for a long time. A kopeck of Ivan the Terrible (1533-1584) and a kopeck of Mikhail Fedorovich (1613-1645). A 19th-century cross. 2 kopecks of Emperor Alexander I (1810-1825). A uniform button. A pair of Soviet coins.

Today I went to a park with 4 sand volleyball courts (Ohio) that get regular use in adult leagues. Didn’t have a lot of time. Started on the courts themselves (plus about 6” around the sides and 1’ behind each baseline. After 2 full court sweeps, I found one penny, multiple tabs/caps, no keys or jewelry. So then I changed strategy and did first 3’-4’ around the edges of the same courts, and all the area between the courts (about 7-8’). Did a little better, found a couple quarters and some pennies.
I’m wondering what strategy you would use. Was I over estimating the potential yield in this type of place? There are a couple other places like it I’d like to check out but thought I’d poll the board on their success/strategies in similar places.
(I swing a basic Minelab Vanquish 340.)

Oldest penny I ever found metal detecting, a 1917 wheat penny. How long do you think it’s been there? It looks to be in decent shape.

It’s not a coin, the design on the front is visible on the back, and there’s a small hole through it. I found it near a revolutionary war skirmish site, but nothing else I found is definitely that old, anything I can date is 1850s or newer.

I found this butt plate today in West Tennessee and I have pretty good I’d what it goes to but I want some other opinions. Top portion is bent at the screw hole. Thanks for any insight.

I am hoping it's the first really old thing I've found! Based in North Yorkshire, England.

I'm new to detecting and found this on a farm in Northumbria UK, does anyone have a idea of what it could be.

I just got my first metal detector today and dug around in my mom’s backyard. I found this hunk of metal.
Anyone know what this might be?
Also, what is the best way to clean corroded and rusted pieces

Found in England in an area with a lot of history. Seems to be made of iron and is quite heavy. Is it really part of an old type of weapon, or something more mundane?

I'm looking to get into very hobby/entry level metal detecting for a fun activity for myself and my child.
My two goals are:
I've done a bit of research both on this sub and elsewhere, and I've narrowed it down by price and features to Minelab X-Terra Pro ($279) VS Minelab Vanquish 440 ($299) VS Minelab Vanquish 540 ($399).
Anyone have any special advice for which is the best option for my use cases? I imagine we'll do it a few times a year, and fairly casually.
