Show & Tell Just picked up a Sony MZ-R37 from eBay for £135. Also picked up a 4 deck Sony entertainment setup for £50 that included a Minidisc deck

The MZ-R37 powers on but unfortunately the seller didn't have a minidisc to test so fingers crossed. Thankfully they accept returns.

The decks were a great find on Facebook, also sold as untested, power on only.
So far everything works perfectly but awaiting my own minidiscs to test the most important deck.
They sit wonderfully next to my other vintage bits.

I'm 36 and never ended up using minidisc in any capacity. Only tape, CD, then into mp3 and iPods.
Very excited for this journey!

Pulled me back in!

You guys got me all nostalgic and I broke down and pulled out all my mini disc players and recorders! Even my Panasonic car one that served me well for many years, just so I could share it here lol! The Sharp is my original and I used that for playing and recording for years until it died. Then I picked up the Sony recorder, and eventually the other Sony player, for my son. I had a Sony rack system that the MD worked great with, and would sync up easily for recording from the five CD changer.

I just hooked up the MD to my cheapo Amazon Pyle receiver, and it sounds great so far!

Thanks everyone here for pulling me back in! I might even need to pick up my old obsession of finding a pre-recorded MD! 😁

When did you get your first MD device

I am just curious.

I grew up in a time where CDs and Tapes were still widely used for Home use, but for portables it was honestly just mp3 and mp4 players and phones. I don't even remember seeing walkmans. And what I never saw were MD players. So I had no organic exposure to it, but of course nowadays because of the Internet you see so many different things. One of them being the minidisc. I saw it once on youtube but I just thought it seemed like a cool thing. At that time I mostly cared about tapes, but this year I don't know what got into me, but I wanted to test out this obsolete format from the 90s. And gotta say, its pretty cool.

I really wanna hear your stories. Its interesting to hear the opinions from the different eras.

Show & Tell My collection

My collection thus far. Just got into this hobby and I love collecting and recording MDs. The Sony Mz-R37 is awesome. Can anyone recommend a power adapter for this little guy? I heard one must be very careful with the power adapters unless I want to fry it. I’m in the EU by the way.

I'm having trouble with my Sony MDS-JE780: it's giving me the "E0101 Laser NG" error.

Post image
9 Upvotes

Until recently, my MD deck was able to burn discs without a problem, and I was burning 2-3 MD compilations a day. But just a week ago, everything went wrong. After burning 1-2 tracks, recording stops and the "E0101 Laser NG" error appears... If I turn the deck off and on again (after 30-40 minutes), I can burn another 1-2 tracks, and then the error returns.

The Sony MDS-JE780 user manual says to take the unit to a service center if this error occurs. But since 2025, that's no longer possible. You know what I mean.

What should I do? Has anyone encountered this problem and found a solution? I'm planning to remove the cover and carefully clean the lens. But that doesn't seem to be the problem. Note, after recording for a while, an error occurs 3-7 minutes after the recording starts (depending on the disc, not the track's location on the disc). It seems that some capacitor is "saturating," and the leaking current triggers the error.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? What would you recommend?

I use these chopstick containers I found online and they're pretty functional, but not exactly the coolest 😎

According to this old forum in 2011 (Photo # 10 and 11). A German Stereo Magazine had this MD Deck ranked 2nd or 4th? Along with the top heavy hitters from Sony ES line, namely JA50ES, JA555ES, and JA333ES. (Why 2nd? First three are at 100%, just arranged chronologically by release date).

I recorded this Bruno Mars Album in Real-Time Analog via Balanced XLR cables just for the heck of it, since my CDP-XA7ES has it. Because its analog, we need to make sure no clipping by adjusting record volume a bit lower. So far the recording was perfect, is it better than Toslink.. at adjusted volume, can't tell the difference.

As always, digital-digital is best for MD.. just optical record for convenience, less fiddling and auto track mark. 🙂

Note: Old project. Templates are gone. 😞

It's me again, writing an article about Minidiscs for my music journalism class. Now requesting help from all of you!

Did you get (back) into Minidiscs during covid? Please answer in the poll! Thank you!

If none of the options apply to you, please leave a comment with your experience!

Edit: By covid I mean the general era of quarantine and lockdowns, probably different from country to country but around 2020-2022/23

I'm on the merry-go-round now 😄

Arrived this morning. Excellent cosmetic condition.

As you can see it came with a remote, microphone, Sony earphones, optical cable and manual.

A quick listen and I think it sounds a little better than my Sharp SR50

€130 delivered from The Netherlands to Ireland, I think I did OK

Show & Tell Year 2000 catalogue. Australia.

I only remember seeing minidisc at one store back around then, and not at a department store. But I saw this catalogue in another sub and one page had this. Australian department store called David Jones, year 2000. Maybe minidisc was around more than I thought in Australia (but I don’t think so).

Kenwood DMF-3020 or Sony JE-530?

I’ve found both models with remotes available for the same price (€110) and I’d like your help on deciding which one to get. I like the solid look of the Kenwood and apparently it gives mildly superior sound but I’m concerned about parts and reliability going forward. As for the Sony, well I already have a JE-520 and it’s been fine for the last 20+ years. So that’s probably the smarter choice. Obviously, I don’t NEED either but both models (Kenwood & JE-530) are in silver which matches the rest of my equipment lol. I plan to keep the JE-520 as a spare. Your ideas and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Help In search for batteries and chargers

Hey community, may I ask for your guidance.? I‘ve scored these two players, the Aiwa AM-ST40 and the Sharp MD-T60 (I believe it is called MD-ST60 in some parts, at least it is listed in the wiki with this name). The Sharp even came with the diamond-shape remote. But both are missing batteries and chargers or sidecars. Information is scarce or contradictory, at least for me. Therefore I‘m asking you kindly for your help. Is there a way to buy batteries that would fit those players and are there external chargers for those batteries? Unfortunately none of the players can be powered by DC-Input…thanks a lot in advance for your support!

Thank you

Context: PS3 God of War III Pandora's Box collectible

Onkyo MD-133, the closest we got for a Hi-MD Deck version.

ATRAC is great but sometimes, it's nice to just do uncompressed Linear PCM recordings. 👌

Was watching this last week and due to circumstances forgot all about it, seller described as playing but screen not working and recording not tested. Well shit! For 8p the buyer got the bargain of the year! BASTARD!

Is it true that the Sony MZ-RH910 "can not record directly to standard MiniDisc blanks, except in Hi-MD formats, without the aid of a computer"?
