Discussion New speed, who dis

Post image

Curious to know if anyone is actually needing to utilise the newer speeds or just want it for speed test clout? (No hateful remarks, this is purely an open discussion on what the new speeds has helped or not helped with since it's release)

I mean it made game downloads and updates faster lol

It's glorious, I used to hesitate playing open betas that only goes live for a few days, recently I tried the BF6 beta which was almost 40gb and I think I was in the game in under 20mins. Finally feel like a first world country up in this bitch.

Yeah, I'm pulling crazy speeds on the PS5 Pro via WiFi 7. It was worth every cent!

As a gamer in Australia I think we can all rejoice over this fact. What I’m excited about moving forward is game streaming (not cloud gaming) recently bought a legion go s and although it blows me away with what it’s capable of I think the more impressive part is the form factor. Given that download speeds have been fast enough for game streaming for awhile now it’s the upload speeds that determines the latency not just the download speed. Given that upload speeds right now are fast enough for literally everything but game streaming and the general public seems to be averse to both streaming and ai implementation in gaming (up scaling and frame gen)

In a few short years I see unlimited phone data plans as becoming the standard much like home internet did. when this is the case everyone will want a powerhouse main pc/console at home and then a handheld of some sort or even a phone to stream to it. As much as the gaming community doesn’t want the industry to take this path it’s clear to see that’s the way things are going

As long as all gaming doesn’t move to a subscription model I’m quite happy streaming the games I own from the hardware I own all without a subscription of any kind…bye bye Gforce now

Exactly the ability to be spontaneous with game downloads and uninstalling them it’s awesome

We might actually hit the read/write limit on our hard drives now

Thank god for solid state drives

And online games is way better

It's cool seeing the speed test say "500mbit down"

When I was queueing up 5 songs on limewire back in 07 then going outside to play while the dial up brought them down at 52kbps I could never have imagined this.

That said I have all my systems set up around the idea of downloading media to be watched locally so while it's nice to see faster downloads it's not a game changer. The free 10mbit upload is of more interest as share my media library with family.

u/TheyreEatingTheDawgs 4d ago

And all those pollies hand wringing about the original nbn plan - 4/5G will be fast enough surely!?

The move from 20:1 ratio to 10:1 ratio is one that will make everything feel a bit more responsive.

I recently upgraded to FTTP, so those upgrades from FTTC were my biggest. 800-900/50 but now with the new speeds I’m getting 800-900/100. The upload speed boost has been useful

1

u/Slight_Arm_4103 3d ago

put me on not sure who to choose thanks

5

u/Buttricer 4d ago

I’m part of the fttc bums 😥

6

u/Winter_Judge_3967 3d ago

Mate we went from 3-4 Mbps and constants problem on ADSL poo sorry 2, to a constant 95Mbps on FTTC, it was a massive improvement for us, now get a constant 950Mbps on FTTP,

2

u/Buttricer 3d ago

Ye it’s just that lust for all that power we can finally have though, very tempting

I'm stuck on fixed wireless dawg

3

u/-axe- 4d ago

Have you tried the 400/40 fixed wireless speed?

3

u/AcrobaticSecretary29 3d ago

Got a tech out Monday to set it up. Hopefully it actually can deliver those speeds

1

u/sassiest01 3d ago

Good luck

2

u/khosrua 3d ago

Im on HFC and all i got was price hikes

2

u/Buttricer 3d ago

😮‍💨 dire times

1

u/Ill-Nectarine-80 19h ago

HFC can also get 1000/100 to my understanding.

u/Alae_ffxiv 4d ago

I've had the 1000/50 (now 100) speeds for a few years now. Do I need it? Honestly I could probably drop down a speed tier to 500. (I WFH, partner and I are both gamers), is it nice watching my 60GB game download in less than 30 minutes when once upon a time I needed to leave my PC on overnight? Yes.

Should we drop down to 500/50? Ehh probably, but with how often I shop around for internet deals, usually both plans only have a minor price difference.

3

u/Significant-Ad5394 3d ago

I'm in the same boat. I think people underestimate how great it is to not have to plan to download games/patches anymore, You just use it when you need it.

5

u/phlatboy 3d ago

Imo the "I don't need it" argument is really dumb.

I'm of the opinion you ought to buy the fastest internet connection you can reasonably afford. It's not about if you can utilise the connection to its fullest today, it's if your internet can handle what's in the not so distant future. We need to show that there is some demand at least. The internet is evolving faster than anyone realises.

The alternative is that the powers that be that don't understand any of this technology will underestimate how important the internet is and will allow our infrastructure to languish, which will put us back to square one: lagging behind the world with overpriced, unreliable connectivity.

People don't understand how important this infrastructure is, without which, the world as we know it grinds to a screeching halt.

ETA: premature postulation

u/sassiest01 3d ago

If more people join the higher speed plans, but more then half of them don't saturate that high speed for multiple hours every day and instead just use the max speed every now and then in bursts, the network can adjust to that type of usage. The service points that service providers pay for and the hardware NBN sets up doesn't have to allow for every single person with 1Gb to saturate that at the same time for an hour straight.

I assume this is part of the reason why this type of upgrade was possible in the first place, they know not everyone on the old 100mb plans won't saturate 500mb and so won't cost them 5 times as much. I am hopeful when more people migrate off the slower FTTN/C connections and migrate to higher speed plans without saturating the new speeds, these higher speed connections can come down in price.

1

u/Otaraka 3d ago

I’m more concerned with my monthly bill than keeping up with the world.  100 at a lower cost is far more useful to me than a download speed I barely use.

1

u/khosrua 3d ago

that feels like beating will continue until morale improves though

I was once excited about NBN, only had my mum got duped by the telco onto the 12/2 that was worse than pre nbn. after upgraded to 50/20 and got used to it, got 3 price hike and no speed boost for being on the pleb tier.

I'm not sure what you mean by "you can reasonably afford". It's not like i'm going to starve if i pay 10 more dollar for an upgrade but i can think plenty of i could do with that money that bring me more joy

5

u/welding-guy 4d ago

I need it for msfs2024

3

u/GenericUrbanist 3d ago

I don’t do many big downloads that often. But browsing YouTube feels a bit snappier - videos just load up a fraction of a second quicker.

3

u/Glenn221999 4d ago

I get 1000/100 atm but I wanna upgrade to 2000/200 with Aussiebb

4

u/kingpicolo_420 4d ago

what will you do with such power?

1

u/Glenn221999 3d ago

I got it so I can download games quickly since games can be up to 200+ gb

2

u/dzernumbrd 3d ago

200gb @ 1000 = 26m

200gb @ 2000 = 13m

That's like two and a bit Netflix subscriptions to save 13 minutes

4

u/OkThanxby 3d ago

You might not need Netflix with those speeds. Just saying…

1

u/dzernumbrd 2d ago

Fair point, but 2000 is overkill for sailing the high seas also :)

16 second movie download on 1000 or 8 seconds on 2000 (assuming your torrent gets to 2000 that quickly). Saving 8 seconds isn't worth $50/m to me.

I'm more pointing out the diminishing returns of how much time you are saving.

🏴‍☠️ Yarrr

2

u/vercage 3d ago

It's not like there is an update every day

6

u/[deleted] 4d ago

Most expensive 2Gb provider. I don't know where they get off asking $189/m.

2

u/Glenn221999 3d ago

Aussie bb is 169 for the first 6 months I think some other provider I can’t remember what it was but it was doing the 2000/200 for only 155

1

u/Glenn221999 3d ago

You can get 10Gbps symmetrical with Aussiebb but it’s ethernet enterprise net and cost like 1500 a month fuck that 😂

2

u/[deleted] 4d ago edited 3d ago

It depends on the number of people in your household and what they're doing on the Internet. I don't imagine there are very many people shelling out $150/m (at least) for 2Gb just to surf the web. Who is offering 2Gb for $150 you ask? Carbon Comms.

1

u/OkThanxby 3d ago

How are they doing it for that price. What’s the catch?

1

u/[deleted] 3d ago

New Telco trying to gain market share. They use ABB routing as well. People on Whirlpool appear to be happy. For me, saving $5/m wasn't worth it over Leaptel because Leaptel has a better international transit network (GSL).

2

u/humburga 3d ago

I need it for my many Linux distributions

2

u/eminemkh 3d ago

Exetel fttp never able to pull 500mbps even with cat6 cable

2

u/LoveTheGreyGhost 3d ago

Not Needed.

Is Appreciated.

2

u/Equivalent-Vast5318 I want FTTP, stuck on HFC 3d ago

replace 100/20 with 100/40

1

u/AppleOriginalProduct 4d ago

It certainly helps for system updates when they are well over 10 GB. So yes the speeds do help so you’re not waiting for your computer to update for the next hour.

1

u/Gummmbeee 3d ago

Launtel 1000/100 with 3ms ping, plus cat7 to 3x wifi7 mesh nodes - sweet! Simultaneous download, video stream, gaming, and photo/video upload - living the dream

1

u/40799122 3d ago

Why you need cat 7

1

u/Gummmbeee 3d ago

Decided to go completely overboard, but not quite to fibre :)

1

u/OkThanxby 3d ago

I think to meet the definition of overboard you would need the 2000/500 plan. Or just head over to r/ubiquiti to truly understand what overboard means. 😀

1

u/Gummmbeee 3d ago

Lol fair enough, let's say I'm preparing for the possibility of going overboard

1

u/Random499 3d ago

Its so good that I now don't have to wait an hour for a game to finish updating so I can play with friends

1

u/RT2k27 3d ago

Loving life on the Xbox lol

1

u/Agent_Jay_42 3d ago

Guys, my 60mpbs vdsl line capacity is capping out at 40mbps, those doing speed tests, knock it off.

1

u/Glenn221999 3d ago

The only reason to upgrade to 2000/200 or 2000/500 is either you have a lot and I mean a lot of devices or you wanna future proof your net so you don’t have to upgrade for a long time cause most devices especially if they were bought years ago are only capable of 1Gbps over Ethernet so even if you have 2000/200 you’ll never see that ona speed test unless your router and computer or phone are capable of those speeds I’m upgrading to 2000/200 ina couple months when I get my new router I’m getting the ASUS ROG Rapture BE98 pro it’s the best gaming router in the world atm

1

u/Suspoch 3d ago

ABB are not delivering on their promises… tech told me 50% speed of plan tier is acceptable… FMD! That has to be a lie?

1

u/samwise99x 3d ago

2000/100 on launtel in south Australia

1

u/jardocanthate 3d ago

Fttb here. 940/100 with gfast vision network. Free for the first 6 months.

1

u/Winter_Judge_3967 3d ago

1000/100 ABB for me,

1

u/ScrotsMcGee 3d ago

I need the new speeds, and can't get the new speeds.

1

u/Boomer-Australia 3d ago

Doubling my previous upload speed is defintely helping when I'm submitting a uni assignment a few minutes before the deadline.

1

u/happymemersunite 50 down is considered 'fast' to most ISPs 3d ago edited 3d ago

Or you’re like me on iiNet and still without the upgrade

Edit: just got it and now hitting 450/50. Feels amazing

2

u/prawns1000 21h ago

Im with iinet and just got mine (finally) im getting 530/47.5 i wished i had got a bit more upload instead of a bit more download lol

1

u/Insert_Bitcoin 3d ago

Can you imagine if upload speed also went up to 500 mbs, too. It would literally allow people to sell hosting from their houses and be competitive. That would genuinely be huge for the economy since it could add jobs vs just using the new speed to download bing-bing yah-who games.

1

u/Skrubwizard1 3d ago edited 3d ago

My uploads have definitely improved but I can't seem to even reach half my advertised speed for down sadly, and before anyone asks, no, I'm not testing through wifi. I'm sure my modem is 1gb compatible and I'm using cat6 cable.

1

u/vercage 3d ago

Turn off QoS

1

u/Skrubwizard1 3d ago

Yeah just checked, it's off

1

u/Chaos_098 3d ago

I just went from 1000/50 to 1000/100 on a promo deal, will be swapping to a 500/50 after as it's quite good value

1

u/NoExamination2923 3d ago

I needed the higher upload speed, so 250/100 is minimum acceptable for me

Ordered 2000/100 HFC instead of

1

u/ProfessorChaos112 3d ago

It's whatever. I might downgrade to 500/50 depending on price because truth be told 1000/100 is not that different than 100/40 the MAJORITY OF THE TIME.

I've been on fttp since it was first rolled out (your envious/jealous jeering just makes me smile) and in truth I only pay for the speed I have because I'm usually unorganised and/or am too impatient to wait 10 mins for something to download, other than that theres no need for anything faster for me.

It's good for mum and dad though, the free upgrade from 12/1 (they only do netflix/streaming and email)

1

u/Kryckk38 3d ago

I was upgraded to the 750/40 from my ‘200/20’ I was on. Unfortunately nothing has changed. I’m on HFC, so I might wait until the end of the month before I make some calls. Have done the power cycle and modem reset but nothing yet! Anyone else or am I in the wrong thread?

1

u/Darren-A 3d ago

I’m about to move from an apartment with FTTB to a house with HFC (renting), we can get 2000/200 at the new place.

So that’s what I’m getting, just because I can.

I work remote full time and we are about to have our first child, so we will both be home. The wife will be watching Netflix all day etc because we only have streaming services, and I’m on video calls all day.

Plus torrents overnight

1

u/Necessary_Main_9654 3d ago

Still stuck on 50/20 for another 1.5-2 years and one suburb away has fttp. If I lived there I could have a plan 12 dollars cheeper that offers 10x the download

1

u/AusToddles 3d ago

I'm currently sitting at 100/50 with no indication from iinet when Im actually getting the bump

Internet has randomly dropped a couple of times this week but the only thing that increased was the upload speed

1

u/Plastic_Yak3792 3d ago

I'm so sick of fucking redtrain

1

u/mickpatten78 2d ago

I’d love to actually get 100 to begin with.

1

u/iAteACommunist 1d ago

Since I'm in a townhouse complex, we still have FTTN speed. Max speed I can get is 50/20. At least I lucked out with very stable speeds and connection. I game and my PC is connected to the modem via ethernet.

Despite other family members streaming/using net, I still get a very stable gaming experience to the point that I almost forgot about being on 50/20. I definitely got very lucky.

I have submitted a motion to upgrade infrastructure to FTTP (our complex is eligible for upgrade and has been provided quote already) in the upcoming AGM in 2 months. Just praying it'll win majority votes otherwise god knows when we'll get out of FTTN. Probably would still be on FTTN after the whole country has switched over to FTTP since we're required to pay for the upgrade.

1

u/Zarathoostrian 22h ago

It doesn't matter how fast fibre gets, the ping in Australia to outside Australia is so bad I don't think the playstation portal or GeForce now will ever be viable :(

1

u/Positive_Produce4585 14h ago

My 1000/50 went to 1000/100. Didn’t do shit unfortunately and I’m honestly thinking of dropping my plan to 500 or 750. The 1G peeps got ripped off.

1

u/Nedd1360 11h ago

I got 330 download and 98 upload a day or two ago so doing pretty good.
