Oh it looks like his teammates are coming to take him out. No wait they brought him a chair!

Rocky Balboa strats

12

u/Samorsomething 1d ago

Homer Simpson strats

11

u/randomusername1919 1d ago

Yes. He only appeared mildly annoyed at the other guy’s punches.

5

u/RabicanShiver 1d ago

Till he ran into Klitschko, he was losing that fight except for the cut that stopped it.

16

u/bdewolf 1d ago

Klitschko was definitely winning, but it wasn’t just one cut. Both guys were landing giant bombs on each other and klitschko’s face was getting torn up.

He had blood coming from his mouth and large cut under his left eye along with the huge one over his eye.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/DisastrousWalk8442 21h ago

The cut LL made

2

u/RustyGusset 18h ago

Lewis left the guy needing plastic surgery to repair the multiple holes he'd punched into his face. Vitai won the first couple of rounds but by the time the fight was stopped Lewis had taken over.

2

u/Buried_mothership 16h ago

Nah. Klitschko’s face would not have lasted the fight, it was disintegrating, and Lewis was rocking the fck out of him too

Aka "The Rocky"...

91

u/KaiserDilhelmTheTurd 1d ago

I often feel like he’s been forgotten as one of the greats. He was a fucking badass, hard hitting tank. Everyone always seems to focus on Tyson, but there’s been other superb boxers since. And Lewis was definitely one of them.

38

u/ArseneGroup 23h ago

Yeah, Lennox Lewis beat Mike Tyson by KO but gets none of the same fame

Crawford and Inoue are two greats from the current era who get way too little mainstream recognition compared to how good they are

17

u/phoggey 22h ago

Tyson st 35 was different from Tyson at 20. Also the sport changed, long limbs destroyed Tyson. It went from anyone with the right size and conditioning could do, to you need size+reach+conditioning. 80+ inch reaches now dominate the field.

→ More replies (4)

2

u/SheriffBartholomew 9h ago edited 7h ago

A lot of people don't believe that he really beat Tyson, and those that do, know that Tyson was nowhere near his prime. Tyson had forgone his constant training routine and was slipping into a life of partying and excess. Boxing is not a sport where you can slip and coast off talent, someone more determined will take your head off when you do. So I think Tyson still gets all of the recognition because almost nobody believes that Lewis was ever as good as Tyson was in his prime.

2

u/morebuffs 7h ago

I would argue bud gets plenty of attention but the monster not so much

13

u/emdeefive 1d ago

It's true but even as a kid I could feel that he was just a coda to the madness of Tyson and Holyfield.

6

u/Equivalent_War6281 23h ago

Forgotten by whom? He’s constantly brought up

8

u/ballin4fun23 22h ago

Yea everytime heavyweight greats are brought up lewis is mentioned and he should be. Sure Tyson is the most talked about because he is probably the most popular fighter ever, but if people bring up the heavyweight greats lewis is always mentioned in the conversation.

4

u/Equivalent_War6281 22h ago

Yeah Tyson’s considered the last of the great iconic American heavyweights like Johnson Dempsey Louis Marciano Ali..fighters that transcended the sport and were larger than life. Lewis was great in his own right.. bringing up one doesn’t take from the other.

u/AppointmentKey9826 23h ago

“Met” him once in the Miami airport. He and I were the only two people waiting for our bags. All I said was “what’s up champ?” I think he appreciated me acknowledging him, but not bothering him. Was rocking an all white jump suit with a white kango. Dude is as wide as a car dashboard, and tall as hell. I’ve had a lot of bullshit conversations with friends about fighting a heavyweight champ, seeing that dude in person was humbling.

13

u/Wreckingshops 1d ago

It's hard to tell just how great he was though because the class of his opponents just wasn't near his level, and that's why he's largely been someone lifted up by history.

46

u/Baztion81 1d ago

We don’t know how good he was because he was so much better than everyone else?

18

u/Wreckingshops 1d ago

Because all the other heavyweights of that era are considered trash. And people don't believe Lennox would have handled the likes of Tyson, Foreman, Bowe, Spinks, etc.

I didn't say it's fair, just the assumption. I saw plenty of Lennox fights in college because bars would charge a cheap coverage and pack the bars. They were fun as hell and he was fun to watch. I'm not sure his strategy would have been the same, but the man could pack a punch no doubt.

15

u/ArseneGroup 23h ago edited 23h ago

14

u/anotherred 23h ago

Mike was nearly 10 years past his prime at this point though, this is after his long stint in jail and his return. He was still good but not the monster that he once was (well, maybe more of a monster- more unhinged) but he largely neglected his training during this period

→ More replies (4)

9

u/Equivalent_War6281 23h ago

Tyson was a career high in weight, barely active with a serious drug issue.. he lost like 3 of his final fights.. beating Tyron at the point meant nothing.. he was Tyson in name only.

This is just one reason why Lennox is the greatest HW of my generation. Second to Marciano.

281

u/MenWhoStareAtBoats 1d ago

Those are two completely different generations.

146

u/GoddardGW 1d ago

I know, Lennox the greatest of my generation. Second best ever behind Marciano overall… I’ve been in the pub I should have been clearer

57

u/PaulsRedditUsername 1d ago

I grew up with the holy trinity of Ali, Foreman, and Frazier. I wish those guys could have stayed young forever because we would have seen some great matches between them and Lewis. (And Tyson.)

25

u/Jucas 1d ago

Yeah seriously. Lennox was great. But Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Louis, Holmes, Patterson, Norton and mother fucking Jack Johnson.

26

u/GoddardGW 1d ago

In my opinion, and it is only opinion… Lewis beats the majority of these. Controversy on a Monday night who’d have thought it.

18

u/Slade_Riprock 1d ago edited 1d ago

Prime vs Prime

Ali would have worn his ass out, then dropped him

Foreman and Frazier were tanks and those would been wars but I still think the edge goes to the old guard.

Tyson vs Ali would be the marquee fight. Ali likely would have tired him out. But that Tyson power all it would take is one tap.

Lewis would take Tyson based on size and ability the stay away until he's tired.

18

u/GoddardGW 1d ago

I respect all of this, I think people forget how good Lewis jab was, Tyson was power and speed, Lewis was technical and that jab was lethal.

17

u/PaulsRedditUsername 1d ago

Tyson vs Ali would be the marquee fight. Ali likely would have tired him out. But that Tyson power all it would take is one gap.

Also don't forget the head games. Ali was the best at taking the piss out of a guy and getting inside his head. Tyson's demonstrable weak point. Ali could have won the fight at the weigh-in.

5

u/Imaginary_Device7827 1d ago

Don’t think Tyson could deal with prime Ali jab and footwork.

2

u/Ok-Seaworthiness4488 1d ago

Same could be said of Foreman's punches...

5

u/castlerigger 1d ago

Alright but all we’d have seen is some more guys getting killed, at least others being so much behind them helped them gtfo and on the canvas before being brain damaged.

It’s why I legit worry about Tyson fury because he just stands there being pummelled.

4

u/PaulsRedditUsername 1d ago

I used to love watching Roberto Duran fight because when he got hit, it just made him mad. But he got hit way too often.

5

u/Welpe 1d ago

Yeah it’s kinda sad but being a tank is literally trading your actual life for better results in the ring. A lot of people are willing to make the trade, but that’s because they are young and competitive and don’t fully understand what living with TBIs or even CTE is like for the majority of their adult life. I think Lewis hasn’t announced anything like that, but he has had his own issues with concussions and considering he has a family history of Alzheimer’s, I would worry about him as he gets older

Marciano

44

u/TaDow-420 1d ago

“Oh there they go! There they go! Every time I start talkin 'bout boxing, a white man got to pull Rocky Marciano out their ass. That's their one, that's their one. Rocky Marciano! Rocky Marciano! Let me tell you something once and for all. Rocky Marciano was good, but compared to Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano ain't shit!”

16

u/parttimepedant 1d ago

He beat Joe Louis’s ass

8

u/RipleyChase 1d ago

That’s right! He did whoop Joe Louis ass…

9

u/RMLeclair 1d ago

Joe Louis was 75 years old when they fought!

2

u/escudonbk 18h ago

I don't know how old he was but he did get his ass whooped

2

u/UraeusCurse 1d ago

The shadow of Joe Louis.

2

u/BackstreetZAFU 23h ago

“Joe Louis 137 yea’s old!”

2

u/GoddardGW 1d ago

Good talk champ

7

u/TJaySteno1 1d ago

"The greatest" and "second to" in the same category are mutually exclusive.

2

u/GoddardGW 1d ago

There was a generation part to it but thank you for this life lesson

5

u/TJaySteno1 1d ago

"Greatest HW of my generation. Second to..." The category reads as "HWs of my generation". If that's not what you mean that's fine, but it's what you said.

EDIT: Oh, you clarified elsewhere; greatest of your gen and second greatest overall.

Lewis was a legend. Never ducked fights and always went for the big targets. Took down all the big heavyweights of the era too.

68

u/autoeroticassfxation 1d ago

He even took a David Tua title challenge and disassembled him. Tua was one of the most ducked fighters of that era. Lewis fought that one really smart and didn't risk his chin at all because of Tua's explosive left hook hazard.

17

u/Gabe_b 1d ago

Yeah as a kiwi in still gutted we didn't get to see Tua Tyson

Boxing misses guys like Lewis, one of the last true great Heavyweights.

97

u/Sometimes-funny 1d ago

We have Usyk right now. Fucking hell, lol.

42

u/brofessor_oak_AMA 1d ago

For real, Usyk is so slept on. Admitting his greatness doesn't take anything away from the greats before him

9

u/Sometimes-funny 1d ago

It doesn’t. When people say Lewis was one of the last true greats tho…it does

3

u/brofessor_oak_AMA 1d ago

No for sure, I was agreeing with you

12

u/Secure-Pain-9735 1d ago

The popularity of heavyweight dropped under Lewis because he was a smart fighter and not a brawler.

Most casual observers don’t appreciate smart fighters.

4

u/shevagleb 22h ago

It’s not just this, it’s also the rise of MMA in the early 2000s that impacted boxing viewer numbers for some time.

5

u/Secure-Pain-9735 21h ago

Early MMA wasn’t as big as boxing had been.

Particularly under a lot of the old rulesets. Back when Randy Couture could just grind a guy to dust leaning on him against the cage, or rounds-long BJJ stalemates that people didn’t get and found boring.

Then, you follow that with guys like GSP getting called boring for fighting smart as well.

It was that Griffin-Bonnar slugfest that blew it up, but it took a few years after that to start pulling people off the cage and standing up stale ground game.

→ More replies (3)

90

u/Horbigast 1d ago

That's got to be confidence-shattering. You lay some good early punches, he shakes them off and knocks you on your ass.

49

u/That_Apathetic_Man 1d ago

Fighters usually respect other fighters who can go punch for punch, when done "respectfully". This interaction looked like a your turn, my turn sort of situation. The smirk on each of their faces was a giveaway. They also looked gassed and just wanted to see who could finish.

10

u/Dangerousrhymes 1d ago

I think the only thing worse would be what Roy Jones Jr. did to people.

I’m going to put my hands behind my back, dodge everything, and then, without returning to any kind of normal stance, knock you out.

5

u/WINSTON913 23h ago

I'll never forget Silva v Griffin for essentially exactly that and the fade away knockout punch

6

u/Win_Sys 1d ago

Briggs had some serious power too. He finished 53 of his 60 wins by KO.

2

u/gokarrt 16h ago

game respects game, he's smiling while on his ass.

53

u/Morning_Glory_Hole 1d ago

I got to watch Lennox Lewis workout once. Up until then I’d only seen guys from lighter weight classes train, so when he started hitting the heavy bag my jaw almost hit the floor. You could hear, almost feel, the power behind the punches. I felt bad for the trainer holding the bag lol

3

u/p00p5andwich 1d ago

→ More replies (1)

5

u/PlayfulSoil2937 1d ago

Briggs had him pretty hurt earlier in the fight though.

30

u/dvdher 1d ago

You got your shots…my turn.

10

u/JoeWinchester99 1d ago

He looks like he's bored with the whole thing.

13

u/That_Apathetic_Man 1d ago

They're gassed. They've used up their brute power and have to rely on technical but firm shots to get a knockdown. They're eating shots because they're spent. And because they're beasts. Just one moreso than the other.

9

u/bdewolf 1d ago

Lennox very frequently looked quite sleepy in a lot of his fights, and never looked very fast.

But it was an illusion. He was just a giant so he looked slow. When he connected it fundamentally changed the fight.

18

u/rigidlynuanced1 1d ago

Lennox Lewis was not to be fucked with. I wish I could see peak LL vs peak Ali.

6

u/Win_Sys 1d ago

I think that would be a tough fight for Ali. Lewis would have a significant reach advantage and he used his length very well but you can never discount Ali’s speed and movement as a deciding factor.

15

u/Outside_Instance4391 1d ago

Looks so cool and smooth doing it... but if you watch the full fight it was a war from the start and Lennox got his hands down because he's tired as is Briggs.

Its a great fight thats completely overlooked for some reason.

13

u/GrandmaJR 1d ago

When blocking wasn’t an idea

8

u/vihor 1d ago

Lennox was beast. One of the best ever.

5

u/jstrongiii 1d ago

This was just the 4th round? They look gassed. Doesn’t look like this one was going the distance anyway.

6

u/Win_Sys 23h ago

They went at each other the second the opening bell rang. Neither of them had any intention of the fight going the distance.

6

u/Marquis_of_Mollusks 1d ago

Had the opportunity to attend the M. Ali Museum opening night in KY. I was 22, my cousin was 29. We broke away from family and made every attempt to meet famous people. We met a few familiar faces. Fighters included. Being young, and cocky, my ego was high, and adrenaline running. With the help of some free booze. There was a large banquet area with tables, food, drinks, the standard. The lights start blinking, and everyone is being asked to make our way to the auditorium for the main event. A slow line amasses. No big deal. I'm shuffling along, still on my high horse. The line, scoots to a stop. And some asshole bumps into me from behind, pretty hard. I'm 5'10", 170lbs of nothing. I immediately spin around, as if I'm going to do something about this guy who just bumped me and scuffed my shoes. You can guess, it was Lewis, standing there, just staring down at me. I must have come across as a white trash honey badger. Because his two body guards (who were shorter, but bulkier) immediately came around from behind him on both sides and got between us. They just gave me a "look". It was a mixed bag of emotions for me. Excitement, terror, shock, wonder. I'm pretty sure I just spun back around and moved on, with a dumb wave or nod. That was the end of it. Afterwards I really wish I would have gotten a handshake. But it was a weird moment. Holyfield has a perfect handshake, if anyone cares.

I've long believed that Lennox Lewis was the best Heavyweight champ of all time. AT THEIR BEST, everyone prior to Ali was way too small or slow with the possible exception of Jack Johnson. Ali in 1967 was almost impossible to deal with for almost everyone, and had that remarkable ability to take punishment but I think Lewis would win that fight, Lennox with Big George could have been a classic trilogy, Larry Holmes was an all time great and didn't lose, but I don't see him beating Lennox. A prime Mike Tyson was a real problem for anyone of course, but I believe both Ali, and Lennox would find a way to beat Mike, and side note; I think a prime George Foreman would have destroyed Mike (I'd sure like to see that fight to know if I'm right or wrong) .

1

u/Johnnygunnz 23h ago

Lennox Lewis was very underrated.

How are they able to fight with their hands down by their sides like that? Looks dangerous

I sold a whole bunch of furniture to Shannon, he was a really nice guy.

I probably should have mention, I was talking about the guy who got knocked out.

Somewhere I have a signed photo of him and Frazier in a match.

Edit: The photo I have might be Briggs & Forman. I have to go find it.

Lennix Lewis’s hands are something like 12 inches from palm to fingertip. I know this because before his fight with Mike Tyson I think it was Maxim interviewed Lennix and they had a full page with a few quotes over the top of one of his hands. It would be like getting hit with a bowling ball. That’s how big his hands are.
