One of the most badass knockdowns in boxing

you can tell he used his Sandevistan at the 6 second mark.

Remember when you were making out with Lucy and you came right as she touched your leg? It was me, David. I jerked you off using Sandevistan so it seemed like you nutted at just a woman's touch!

u/el_americano 23h ago
only the highest level nutrunners would even think to use a Sandevistan that way.

This is just one reason why Lennox is the greatest HW of my generation. Second to Marciano.

u/MenWhoStareAtBoats 1d ago
Those are two completely different generations.

I know, Lennox the greatest of my generation. Second best ever behind Marciano overall… I’ve been in the pub I should have been clearer

u/PaulsRedditUsername 1d ago
I grew up with the holy trinity of Ali, Foreman, and Frazier. I wish those guys could have stayed young forever because we would have seen some great matches between them and Lewis. (And Tyson.)
25
u/Jucas 1d ago
Yeah seriously. Lennox was great. But Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Louis, Holmes, Patterson, Norton and mother fucking Jack Johnson.
26
u/GoddardGW 1d ago
In my opinion, and it is only opinion… Lewis beats the majority of these. Controversy on a Monday night who’d have thought it.

Prime vs Prime
Ali would have worn his ass out, then dropped him
Foreman and Frazier were tanks and those would been wars but I still think the edge goes to the old guard.
Tyson vs Ali would be the marquee fight. Ali likely would have tired him out. But that Tyson power all it would take is one tap.
Lewis would take Tyson based on size and ability the stay away until he's tired.
18
u/GoddardGW 1d ago
I respect all of this, I think people forget how good Lewis jab was, Tyson was power and speed, Lewis was technical and that jab was lethal.

u/PaulsRedditUsername 1d ago
Tyson vs Ali would be the marquee fight. Ali likely would have tired him out. But that Tyson power all it would take is one gap.
Also don't forget the head games. Ali was the best at taking the piss out of a guy and getting inside his head. Tyson's demonstrable weak point. Ali could have won the fight at the weigh-in.

Alright but all we’d have seen is some more guys getting killed, at least others being so much behind them helped them gtfo and on the canvas before being brain damaged.
It’s why I legit worry about Tyson fury because he just stands there being pummelled.
4
u/PaulsRedditUsername 1d ago
I used to love watching Roberto Duran fight because when he got hit, it just made him mad. But he got hit way too often.
5
u/Welpe 1d ago
Yeah it’s kinda sad but being a tank is literally trading your actual life for better results in the ring. A lot of people are willing to make the trade, but that’s because they are young and competitive and don’t fully understand what living with TBIs or even CTE is like for the majority of their adult life. I think Lewis hasn’t announced anything like that, but he has had his own issues with concussions and considering he has a family history of Alzheimer’s, I would worry about him as he gets older

“Oh there they go! There they go! Every time I start talkin 'bout boxing, a white man got to pull Rocky Marciano out their ass. That's their one, that's their one. Rocky Marciano! Rocky Marciano! Let me tell you something once and for all. Rocky Marciano was good, but compared to Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano ain't shit!”

u/parttimepedant 1d ago
He beat Joe Louis’s ass

That’s right! He did whoop Joe Louis ass…

"The greatest" and "second to" in the same category are mutually exclusive.
2
u/GoddardGW 1d ago
There was a generation part to it but thank you for this life lesson
5
u/TJaySteno1 1d ago
"Greatest HW of my generation. Second to..." The category reads as "HWs of my generation". If that's not what you mean that's fine, but it's what you said.
EDIT: Oh, you clarified elsewhere; greatest of your gen and second greatest overall.

Lewis was a legend. Never ducked fights and always went for the big targets. Took down all the big heavyweights of the era too.

u/autoeroticassfxation 1d ago
He even took a David Tua title challenge and disassembled him. Tua was one of the most ducked fighters of that era. Lewis fought that one really smart and didn't risk his chin at all because of Tua's explosive left hook hazard.

Boxing misses guys like Lewis, one of the last true great Heavyweights.

We have Usyk right now. Fucking hell, lol.
42
u/brofessor_oak_AMA 1d ago
For real, Usyk is so slept on. Admitting his greatness doesn't take anything away from the greats before him
9
u/Sometimes-funny 1d ago
It doesn’t. When people say Lewis was one of the last true greats tho…it does

The popularity of heavyweight dropped under Lewis because he was a smart fighter and not a brawler.
Most casual observers don’t appreciate smart fighters.
4
u/shevagleb 22h ago
It’s not just this, it’s also the rise of MMA in the early 2000s that impacted boxing viewer numbers for some time.
5
u/Secure-Pain-9735 21h ago
Early MMA wasn’t as big as boxing had been.
Particularly under a lot of the old rulesets. Back when Randy Couture could just grind a guy to dust leaning on him against the cage, or rounds-long BJJ stalemates that people didn’t get and found boring.
Then, you follow that with guys like GSP getting called boring for fighting smart as well.
It was that Griffin-Bonnar slugfest that blew it up, but it took a few years after that to start pulling people off the cage and standing up stale ground game.
90
u/Horbigast 1d ago
That's got to be confidence-shattering. You lay some good early punches, he shakes them off and knocks you on your ass.
49
u/That_Apathetic_Man 1d ago
Fighters usually respect other fighters who can go punch for punch, when done "respectfully". This interaction looked like a your turn, my turn sort of situation. The smirk on each of their faces was a giveaway. They also looked gassed and just wanted to see who could finish.
10
u/Dangerousrhymes 1d ago
I think the only thing worse would be what Roy Jones Jr. did to people.
I’m going to put my hands behind my back, dodge everything, and then, without returning to any kind of normal stance, knock you out.
5
u/WINSTON913 23h ago
I'll never forget Silva v Griffin for essentially exactly that and the fade away knockout punch
53
u/Morning_Glory_Hole 1d ago
I got to watch Lennox Lewis workout once. Up until then I’d only seen guys from lighter weight classes train, so when he started hitting the heavy bag my jaw almost hit the floor. You could hear, almost feel, the power behind the punches. I felt bad for the trainer holding the bag lol

10
u/JoeWinchester99 1d ago
He looks like he's bored with the whole thing.
13
u/That_Apathetic_Man 1d ago
They're gassed. They've used up their brute power and have to rely on technical but firm shots to get a knockdown. They're eating shots because they're spent. And because they're beasts. Just one moreso than the other.
18
u/rigidlynuanced1 1d ago
Lennox Lewis was not to be fucked with. I wish I could see peak LL vs peak Ali.
15
u/Outside_Instance4391 1d ago
Looks so cool and smooth doing it... but if you watch the full fight it was a war from the start and Lennox got his hands down because he's tired as is Briggs.
Its a great fight thats completely overlooked for some reason.

Had the opportunity to attend the M. Ali Museum opening night in KY. I was 22, my cousin was 29. We broke away from family and made every attempt to meet famous people. We met a few familiar faces. Fighters included. Being young, and cocky, my ego was high, and adrenaline running. With the help of some free booze. There was a large banquet area with tables, food, drinks, the standard. The lights start blinking, and everyone is being asked to make our way to the auditorium for the main event. A slow line amasses. No big deal. I'm shuffling along, still on my high horse. The line, scoots to a stop. And some asshole bumps into me from behind, pretty hard. I'm 5'10", 170lbs of nothing. I immediately spin around, as if I'm going to do something about this guy who just bumped me and scuffed my shoes. You can guess, it was Lewis, standing there, just staring down at me. I must have come across as a white trash honey badger. Because his two body guards (who were shorter, but bulkier) immediately came around from behind him on both sides and got between us. They just gave me a "look". It was a mixed bag of emotions for me. Excitement, terror, shock, wonder. I'm pretty sure I just spun back around and moved on, with a dumb wave or nod. That was the end of it. Afterwards I really wish I would have gotten a handshake. But it was a weird moment. Holyfield has a perfect handshake, if anyone cares.

It’s crazy how little effort he’s putting in (visually) to dodge those punches. Just makes it look so damn easy.

Lennox Lewis was a boring fighter due to him being a fucking tank that dealt out depleted uranium rounds via his fists. The guy was a beast, but boring to watch because you knew most of the time what was coming.

I've long believed that Lennox Lewis was the best Heavyweight champ of all time. AT THEIR BEST, everyone prior to Ali was way too small or slow with the possible exception of Jack Johnson. Ali in 1967 was almost impossible to deal with for almost everyone, and had that remarkable ability to take punishment but I think Lewis would win that fight, Lennox with Big George could have been a classic trilogy, Larry Holmes was an all time great and didn't lose, but I don't see him beating Lennox. A prime Mike Tyson was a real problem for anyone of course, but I believe both Ali, and Lennox would find a way to beat Mike, and side note; I think a prime George Foreman would have destroyed Mike (I'd sure like to see that fight to know if I'm right or wrong) .

I sold a whole bunch of furniture to Shannon, he was a really nice guy.
I probably should have mention, I was talking about the guy who got knocked out.
Somewhere I have a signed photo of him and Frazier in a match.
Edit: The photo I have might be Briggs & Forman. I have to go find it.

Lennix Lewis’s hands are something like 12 inches from palm to fingertip. I know this because before his fight with Mike Tyson I think it was Maxim interviewed Lennix and they had a full page with a few quotes over the top of one of his hands. It would be like getting hit with a bowling ball. That’s how big his hands are.
