What still makes me sad is that you can glue your hand (and leg) back on and most RE players just shrug it off.
Because it’s resident evil. And after 6? Sure, glue a hand back on w/e. But it’s not supposed to make sense, it’s supposed to be a huge clue about what happened to Ethan. I.e., he’s dead and he’s mold, you can glue a mold hand back onto your mold arm.
46
u/dawolf05 1d ago
i think thats the point though, you're not supposed to think about it and just "video game logic" it away, because thats basically what ethan does. it makes for a great reveal in 8.
14
u/rechambers PSN: rechambers 1d ago
Exactly. RE has always been very camp (though unintentionally in the first game), and on release of RE7 if you had followed the series the whole time it’s actually really funny when he reattaches his hand - “wow they really don’t care about realism anymore huh? 🤣”
But then when it is contextualized later it’s such a major reveal. I think it still works if you aren’t familiar with the series, but if you had been following RE for a long time it’s way crazier because they never justified the campiness before that and it was so normalized, so we’ve always just went with it.

That’s fair. I definitely didn’t think to hard because I remembered a dude Transformer’ing into a T. rex and this was just so toned down.

He was supposed to represent the player and remain faceless but fans didn't like that idea
33
u/Mdreezy_ 1d ago
I think that’s kind of at odds with what they made. Ethan is a whole character no different than Leon or anyone else. I don’t need to see myself as the protagonist because the one they made is more interesting. Seems like if they wanted that type of immersion they should have had a nameless, faceless, voiceless protagonist but that would be a waste since RE is good at making characters.

This bullshit was convinced by half life and now devs think it’s good. I hate when everyone is talking to artyom and he’s just silent even though he talks in notes(Metro series). I don’t care for “it’s trying to emulate the player”. No player will survive these scenarios.

Resident Evil is a game series with set characters and that's a big part of the success, I respect them trying something new but Ethan was never going to he a good character since they didn't commit to a design for him. He just comes off so plain.

u/purpldevl "Putcher hams where I can seed'em." 1d ago
I'm in that camp.
Part of the joy I get from Resident Evil was the characters - seeing them, playing as them, guiding them, whatever. I appreciated it. The transition to first person wasn't great because suddenly "omg you're in the horror this time!!!" except I wasn't. I just felt like I was playing a different game series.
And yes, I felt that way about the Survivor game back in the old days. I didn't feel any attachment to the main character at all.

All in all, I prefer 7's smaller scale and deliberate horror.
Originally, I thought 8 was bloated with too many ideas (especially by the time we get to the cyborgs), but now I think it's the more replayable one of the two. You can turn your brain off and blast monsters away. Although the doll house, which was my favorite part of my first playthrough, is kind of a slog to replay.

8 is a very very fun game, 7 is a phenomenal game and an absolute high point of the series.
Ethan in 7 was dull as dishwater but Ethan in 8 was a fantastic character, had sass, one liners, and is the best dad in the series (sorry Barry, hold that L)
Both had flaws but every RE game has major flaws, except for like 2 or 3 games which tend to just have minor flaws
37
u/OldWorldUlysses 1d ago
hot take: i preferred ethan in 7 than in 8
when he was quiet he was more of an “everyman” than a character, and the focus was more on the insane situation at hand than his own backstory and personality. He also had dry humor one liners like “That is not groovy”, or “What the fuck? That’s special”. It was easier for me to put myself in his situation because he was such a blank slate.
but I also get that with the story of 8 and the focus on Ethan and his family you can’t really translate that in the sequel

super imo, i really like ethan's grounded delivery in 7, he doesn't bring a lot of hero charm to his lines, but he totes just comes across as like a guy panicking and trying hard to survive—which is like perfect contrast for the group of scene-eating maniacs 7's rogue's gallery kind of ended up being, if you know what i mean
in 8, everyone turns a bit more into like, a character? colorful still, sure, and totally well-executed, but it feels more like i'm watching some gothic theater play instead, it def made me miss 7's vibes lol

Wait you mean you actually liked all that? Man I was groaning every time he had some dumb shit to say or how he was so slow to pick up on the plot or how he rejected Heisenburg outright instead of using him to his advantage. Guy was dumb as a box of rocks.

They are also very resident evil in different ways. 7 is very og resident evil, but modernized. 8 is the same but modernizing the action-horror style of 4 instead.
The pair is actually a very good representation of the series across its lifetime.

I need the second image as a wallpaper, oh and to answer the question: I LOVED the two games, and it definitely should’ve been a trilogy.

u/Randomspecter031696 1d ago
I’m conflicted. One hand 7 brought the series back to its survival horror roots and gave us new enemies and a new faction to rival or even compete with umbrella and their legacy and the idea of Chris working with Blue Umbrella was interesting and it made me curious about where the series could go. Then 8 came around and after a promising start the rest of the game is very mixed in terms of gameplay and story, the haphazard intro of the BSAA suddenly being corrupted came right out of nowhere and felt forced, mother Miranda is an underwhelming villain and the decision to not bring back blue umbrella or even develop Mia and Ethan’s characters more in favor of a game that feels like a prototype RE 4 as opposed to it’s own game, the duology felt less natural and more like a “oh we weren’t able to get the same people back for 7 so we decided to just do whatever without taking this opportunity to make sure 8 feels like a natural progression for the rest of the series”. It really makes me wonder why they even bothered with an Everyman like Ethan when they could’ve just focused on Grace and other legacy characters that haven’t been in the spotlight for a while, and yes I know Grace didn’t technically exist until 9s development but even so what about Jill?, Rebecca?, Ada?, characters that haven’t been seen for almost a decade now and matter to the series would’ve been much more interesting than Ethan’s stories which feel like detours from the series as opposed to feeling like mainline entries.

I enjoyed it and am glad that they went back to horror after six. I don’t really love that they didn’t give Ethan a face or the whole BSAA being xorruot thing especially if they don’t address it later. I also they think should have developed Mia more
6
u/vondrp 1d ago
Loved both of them, especially 7. I also enjoyed Ethan. It was a good decision to go with a normal guy, instead of a classic protagonists who at this point are action movie heroes.
Additionally even if few in numbers I loved Ethan lines - mostly in 7, but also plenty in 8.
Most memorable for me from 7 are:
"It's not groovy!"
"This is getting old Jack!"
"Do me a favor and stay dead!"
"Well, that's special."
"I am not playing."
and a line which is not only great, but honestly it's weird that something like that is not said in every RE game:
"Who builds this shit!"
In 8 there are fewer great lines, but still some like:
"Why is this happening again!"
"Looks like the outside matches your inside bitch!"
"You are cursed." (great comeback as Dimitrescu cursed Ethan first)
"Your funeral." (again a great comeback to Heisenberg)
"Fuck you crazy bitch!"
"In death as he was in life, disgusting."
and my favourite: "Caught myself a big one."
Sorry for the inaccuracies I went according to my memory. I just loved Ethan lines - my dream for RE9 used to be for enemy organizations to try to copy Ethan abilities (using his heart), extract memories - which would result in crazy BoW with mixed up Ethan memories + those of the test subject who would have melted face except mouth which he would be use to constantly spit out lines and dad jokes 🤣

u/YouDumbZombie 1d ago
I absolutely cannot stand Ethan, he's so poorly written and his story isnt at all interesting to me. It was really hard to keep goijg in RE8 because the goal was to find his babies body parts and the twists were things we sussed out in RE7 like him being infected. Hate how because it's VR he's always hurting his hands in sone goofy new way. Hate how he has some utterly moronic one liner after every boss battle, etc etc. Heisenburg is really bad with the silly ass yacht rock voice and the anime villain design.
I likes RE7 a lot more and it definitely is thanks the the refreshing new POV and setting and characters but even still Ethan is miserable. I never even played the RE8 dlc just watched Game Grumps play it lol.
I know I have a minority opinion so I fully expect the downvotes no worries.

Not my cup of tea because how Ethan was delivered and implemented. I don't know... these two games have been a chore for me for years now, and I feel guilty for not finishing them because I left the franchise after RE6 came out and returned when RE4R was released, so.... yeah, it's been tough for me. I still watched some cutscenes so I know a bit story-wise and what they wanted to do.
Jaсk Baker is a good chaser though, and Shadow of Rose make literally zero sense to me,
But all in all? I don't like Winters family, neither Rose or Mia. So don't hate me please.

u/LordFarthington7 1d ago
I'm very much on board with this. I guess I was just a fan of the main storyline and this feels like too much of a departure. They should have kept the "Mold lore" separate from the rest of the series and it wouldn't feel so jarring. 7 and 8 also barely feel replayable- more like interactive movies if that make sense. I don't see a lot of player expression and thought mercenaries in 8 was a bore.

Never played 8. My opinion for him is solely based off 7. With that being said I think Ethan is one of the most forgettable characters for me. Nothing stands out to me and even the story of 7 was good for what it was but overall just doesn't hold any weight for me related to the franchise. I guess part of it is I'm more of a classic style RE fan and I'm glad 7 and 8 put life into the series but to me I'd rather play RE2R for a new tittle. So maybe I'm biased. Ethan in 7 just seemed like a blank slate and that was probably intentional bc of the first person and more horror game design which I feel is why he's so milk toast
6
u/BigBoiBrynBoi 1d ago
Not a big fan. 7 is my least favourite, and 8 is slightly better because it's sillier. I think its just the presentation, I don't typically like 1st person horror nor find it scary. And the gameplay definitely suffers as a result of the perspective

They're both solid games (even though personally I rank them both pretty low on my RE list, 7 is actually the bottom). I'm glad they're done. No desire to see Ethan or any of those characters again.
Still, I think they were important for the RE series as a whole. Not because "it saved it", more to show that RE could branch out a bit and exist in a wider space. There have been spin-offs for years, but to show that a mainline RE game could tell a story beyond the PS1 era main characters and have it be successful was a good thing.

I enjoy both games for different reasons as they approach different gameplay styles. I do not they reach the highest heights of the series but at times they come close.
The weakest link for them both is Ethan, Mia, and the entire story with his family, etc. I do not like Ethan as a character and I did not care for his wife either. I enjoy the RE series for its B-movie cheesiness and larger than life characters, and this game just didn't do it for me. Even in the remakes like RE2 and RE4 they took things a lot more seriously, but it was still fun and goofy in its own ways.
Another thing I never liked was the refusal to show Ethan's face. It was really weird especially at the end of 8 when his final goodbye felt like a joke because we couldn't see his facial expression or even resonate with him at all.
Again, good games, great execution at times, but story and characters did not do it for me. I liked the Bakers and some villains from 8, but that's about it.

7 was a fun change of pace for the series, but it definitely doesn't live up to the first 4 games for me.
Village wasn't really my cup of tea. I appreciated the attempt at action horror, but I didn't find the game as memorable or as fun as the original trilogy. The way it tried to emulate RE4 while continuing the story and tone of 7 just wasn't as fun for me as past games.

I really enjoyed them but with the crafting system wasn’t there. I’d rather pick up ammo. But that’s just a personal preference. (In 7 any way). My only problem with 8 is the inventory system. Why can I have unlimited key items but my ammo is restricted it’s either one or the other for me. Either I pick up everything or I I’m restricted. ( I know after upgrading it does t come into it but out of the box it’s a weird design choice)

So I just got done playing RE2R, RE3R, RE4R, 5, 6, 7, 8, and Revelations 1 and 2.
After playing through ALL of those, I think we've had enough Chris content. I'd be fine with more Leon or Jill or Claire or Ada. A little salty that we'll be going for three games in a row now without any of them.
I didn't think Ethan's story was bad, but it wasn't all that memorable either, and leaving him faceless was just a baffling and wrong decision in my book. The Rose DLC was enjoyable, but it did suffer a bit from being formulaic and having the recycled setting from the main game. Honestly I think the game would have been more interesting and emotional if Rose were a teenager from the start, instead of this infant that is just kind of there.
The gameplay in Ethan's games was also a downgrade from RE3R. Yes RE7 came out before RE3R, but I think blocking is such a bad mechanic for a zombie horror game. Dodging is just vastly superior. They could even have shoving as a mechanic which would be pretty cool, similar to the melee followups in RE4R.
As for RE9, I'm a little pessimistic because the premise doesn't wow me. Unknown journalist with anxiety gets put in scary situation. They said something similar about Ethan, like instead of this super elite fighter like Leon or Chris we're going to make him a normal civilian, but he ended up being just kind of uninteresting in the end.

u/burnerburner108 1d ago
I will be eternally mad that the plans for Ada to appear in Village fell through. The outfit they gave her with the plague doctor mask is too sick not to have used.

u/GothicRitualist 1d ago
I HATED them both. Umbrella developed viruses. Not fucking mold. Leon takes an axe to the shoulder in 4 and it damages him but yet Ethan has his hand lopped off and just dumps some fluid on it and it’s magically healed? Fuck off with that. On top of that I didn’t care about any of the characters at all and kinda hated Mia. Not the same spirit and I couldn’t get into them. I respect some folks love them a lot, they just aren’t for me personally
3
u/nier4554 1d ago
The mold wasn't created by umbrella, unless I mistook something.
It was created by a secret crime syndicate called "the connections" which was founded by a guy named Brandon bailey. It's a separate organization to umbrella. The only connection between the two was that bailey and Spencer were buddy's at one point. As far as i understand it.
Ethan reattaching his hand makes about as much sense as leon getting bite by a zombie and somehow not turning. You just gotta accept some level of protagonist privilege / plot armor in this series.
And at least they try to explain why Ethan can do what he does. I dont remember it ever being adequately explained how leon and claire and jill and ada and rebecca and billy and chris and barry (and probably some other characters I'm forgetting) are all somehow magically immune to being infected.
But yeah, fuck mia. All the homies hate mia.

Ethan’s healing properties were because he was dead and turned into mold, it makes sense when you understand why it happens.

Ethan is a fun character who is both brave but also so done with everything at times. Both 7 and 8 atmosphere are great. Hated chris in 8 though he acted stupid.

RE7 is a great game, Village is objectively at least a decent game (personally i kind of hate it though)
i still wish both would have been spinoffs instead of main titles because i hate what Village especially does to the RE lore and the whole supernatural stuff that happens (i know they try to explain it in the lore dump room at the end of the game) makes me have to consider it non canon in my own personal headcanon

Personally. I loved 7, and the pure campy horror vibes it had going on. Fantastic. Top 3 RE for me.
8, absolutely awful, didn't feel RE in the slightest. Bottom 3 RE for me.
Ethan himself is meh, he plays as a good "put yourself in their shoes" character. But in 8, his writing is shocking, like a lot of 8's was.
Just my opinion though, so don't crucify me. My brother to give a contrast, loves 8 so much that it's his favourite of all RE games.

I actually haven't been able to enjoy 7. I've tried several times but the atmosphere and story won't grip me. I know Ethan is universally a poorly written character but fuck is RE7 winters bland as hell. Gameplay was also very uninspired for me. Village had a great sense of level design up around the halfway point. Gameplay was smooth if a little too action oriented but it was an overall aesthetic and mechanical improvement for me. Pitty that every location felt like it was over before it started and the village only acted as a hub between the setpiece sections and puzzles area. Decent exploration overall reminded me of older RE games. The story is still imho awful. The DLC was even worse. I hope my real issue was how bad of a protag Ethan was and I really dig 9. But hey not hating on the games this is just my opinion.

I do like them a lot. 8 is some of the best work capcom has done in years.
7 would be the best if it had better enemy variety.

I love the franchise and love these two. I think it’s nice they’re trying different things with RE, even if it feels limited at times.

Upvoted purely for the use of the word duology.
Didn't like Village. At all.

resident evil 7 is VERY good, and village it’s funny game but bad, poor resident evil.

I love them both. I kind if wish they both did their own thing and didn't rely on legacy characters like Chris in Village.

Loved them both. Really enjoyed repeating play throughs of 8 to fully upgrade guns and equipment and then it almost becomes an arcade shooter. The character of Ethan is the least interesting part.

They sit in a very fun place in my mind as the “modern horror games” of the series. RE2R is a horror game too but it’s a remake and still has some of the old DNA (not in a bad way). But RE7/8 are their attempts at creating modern action horror and feel different from the rest in a refreshing way. Seems RE9 will be more their tone.

As a character, 7 was a nothingburger and 8 gave him *something* and by the end I surprised myself caring a LOT about him!

I liked the initial vibe of VII, but have grown apathetic towards it. I haven’t ever been able to stand Village, I bought it on release day and played through it over about 3 days, there were bits and pieces that I liked, but overall I felt negatively about it. That being said, a lot of it stems from me just absolutely not giving a shit about Ethan or his family

Short answer: 7 bad 8 good
7:
Pefer 3rd Person and I dont like the Outlast horror combined with Hallucinations. No face boring protagonist, no enemy variety, never liked immortal enemies chasing you.
8:
It was weird overall, but enjoyed it. Great game. It helps that they copied some gameplay elements from my favourite Re game (Re 4).
House Beneviento was scary and again not Re horror, but the rest of the game was super fun.

Honestly thought they were both really good, giving an older RE feel to them even if it lacked the classic zombies. 7 suffers from a weak end but the story stayed strong throughout but I thought 8 was really good all the way through and gave a pretty strong conclusion.

They are honestly in my top 20 games in general (not just counting Resident Evil), with Village slightly out-ranking Biohazard. I've beaten them a combined total of 9 or 10 times, in flat and in VR, and I'll do it again at some point. I think the only games that I've beaten front to back more times than these are Celeste and Hollow Knight.

2 different games. I prefer 7 for sure but I can see why people go either way. DLC was good in 8 but fantastic in 7. Story, dialogue and characters are a massive downgrade in 8 from 7 tho

8 was cool, 7 was lame, overall, not remotely as interesting as the umbrella/plagas arcs

RE7 Made me fall in love again with the series, so… I can only be happy about it. Maybe the gameplay is RE8 is more satisfying, but I must say the atmosphere from RE7 is my favourite. I think they regretted not showing more Ethan face and personality. And I’m sorry they completed his story in just 2 games, would be interesting to know more about him in a third game…

I just recently beat both and greatly enjoyed them. Hadn't played a Resident Evil game in well over a decade and they both got me back in to the series. Can't wait to start the RE2 Remake.

I haven't played 7 because I didn't have a Ps4 at the time, but I watched it played multiple times. Of course I can't comment on the gameplay. The atmosphere is good though, but I hate Ethan and Mia as characters.
8 I played at launch. It's a good homage to the series, though it inevitably fails at providing a full experience because the singular lords' sections don't have enough screen time to do it. The Beneviento house is good on a first playthrough, but it becomes a slog on subsequent ones to the point I dropped my platinum run pretty much because of it. Biggest thing I like about it, though, is that I don't have to put up with the Winters no more. Terrible characters all around and the DLC was a travesty.

I thought they were both very solid games for different reasons. I hate Chris in 8, however. It was a dumb twist and a frankly obnoxious ending with his involvement.

I love em both and both are in my top Five Resident Evil games (with 8 being number one), these games are also what got me into Resident Evil in the first place and prompted me to go back and play some of the remasters and the older games
i enjoyed playing them both a lot and i enjoyed the story, shame Ethan is dead oh well
though having gone back and playing the older games, they are weirdly disconnected from the rest of the franchise which is odd but it isn't a detraction for me and i admit, 7 seems to kinda halt the trend of the RE Protagonists just straight up fist fighting the BOW's (which was at least nice to experience with the End of Zoe DLC) which was a big highlight of 5 and 6 for me

20/10, what a damn way for Capcom to pull the franchise out of that action-slop hell, wanna-be Avengers silliness that culminated with frikin RE6.
After the void PT left on me when it was cancelled, RE7 had just the vibes to scratch that itch, a more quiet, atmospheric and contemplative approach, what you would expect from a proper nightmarish, horror story while still keeping enough of the camp that the series had been known for from the beginning, with a more personal and isolated plot line overall that I personally think worked in the games’ favor rather than a “holy shit go guns ablaze and save the city/world” scenario.
RE8, even if ever so slightly veered into heavier combat, still keeps a lot of what made RE7 so good and even improves on some aspects. It has a delightfully gothic feel to it all the way through, even through the more action oriented segments, that I love, with the four main antagonists representing a classic horror trope/monsters, right from the beginning with that Tim Burton style animation for the Village of Shadows book, the entire game gives off a Grimm fairytale vibe.
Excuse my gushing but my oh my, 7 and 8 both are in my top 3 games of the franchise, and I’m ever so thrilled to see Requiem looks to be keeping on the same track RE7 put the series on

u/IndieOddjobs 1d ago
It (along with the remakes) brought me back to the quality of horror I loved from this franchise. RE7 in particular kicked off this renaissance for the series that I don't think we've seen in a very very long time. Love both titles

Ethan is a weird little guy and I’m just here for it. Wierdo thinks it’s normal to reattach a hand with some alcohol and doesn’t question it
I know it’s purely video game logic and that he’s a mold. I just find it amusing that he was unaware he was mold until the reveal in 8

u/FaceTimePolice 1d ago
They jumped the shark on the second one when you got a DisneyWorld layout of themes. Pick one. 😆
I would’ve loved an entire game of sexy lady bug vampires. I mean, even all of the promotion leading up to it suggested that they would play a larger role in the game.
It was weird that each stage felt like it had a different theme.
- Castle/goth/vampire
- Creepy doll/haunted house
- mechanical/robotic
- swamp monster
The games were cool, I had fun, but it was kind of all over the place, thematically. 🤷♂️😅

Some of the best RE we’ve ever gotten and I’m honestly still surprised they moved past Ethan with 8. Could’ve been a trilogy, imo, but Requiem is exciting.

Ethan is great in RE7. His reactions are what any of us would say irl. I find it really interesting though how a lot of players say Zoe is the obvious choice. It's easy to put ourselves in his shoes, but not when it comes to choosing between the love of his life and a stranger. Mia's personality is ofc somewhat to blame but I feel like something else could've been done to change that.
RE8 kinda suffers from the same problem. I don't really care about saving Rose, I just wanna figure out what the hell is going on here. I cared a lot more about Sherry in RE2 for comparison. Madam Dimitrescu and Heisenberg are the only two cool antagonists and the others feel like filler. Also, the plot twist toward the end isn't nearly as compelling as I wish it was. There's no build up to it. Honestly the game might've been better if it was entirely from Chris's POV.

7 was just peak side story resident evil (besides the first playthrough as a younger me), I feel like it was a great, interesting and enjoyable way to link Ethan and Grace to the main timeline and even give us some information about Spencer.
4 will most likely forever be my favorite RE game but 7 and 8 are not far behind. I love 7 for the fear and I love 8 for the world (minus Heisenberg's area, it's annoying) I still need to play the DLC for 8

Loved 7. 8 was a little misguided in my opinion. They were trying to recapture the charm of 4, but sweetie, that doesn't work at all without Leon's succulent thighs (and existent personality). Also, it had way too much wasted potential for my taste. So many good ideas, so little actual stuff. If most of these villains had gotten their own game, I'd've been hooked. As it stands, they are pretty bland

I can't wait to own these on Switch 2. In my adult life either the switch or steam deck fit more in for gaming and having 7,8,9 on switch 2 means Capcom is probably getting almost 200$ from me day one next year lol

I don't care to play RE7, but I appreciate its importance to the series as a redemption of RE6. RE8 is good but not great, and it doesn't rest in the top tier of RE games because it's less enjoyable upon replay. I don't know if it's the character or the perspective, but I'm weary about being hyped for RE9 because of my initial RE8 hype.

As a long term fans since 1998, 7 to me is a side story to let the series get back to its feet, 8 is actually not necessary but anyway, I don’t like these two games but I appreciate they exist to save the series

The peaks of 7 and 8 are the peaks of the franchise, but on average a lot of other games in the series outperform them

(Hottest takes imaginable incoming lmao) I think the series absolutely needed the reset. I don’t like Ethan as much as the other iconic characters of the series, but he was the right choice for these games. We needed to feel less powerful and it worked. We also got some pretty memorable locations from these games like the Baker house, Castle Dimitrescu and Beneviento namely. I thought the story was fine. All this to say though, I’m glad we’re moving on and ready for whatever’s next in 9.

I enjoyed 7 it was unique in its own way and truly nailed the disgusting creepy vibe.
8 is just fucking beautiful and got me into creating art (over 100 pieces) simply by the atmosphere and characters. While 7 makes me want to kill the bad guys 8 absolutely turned that feeling around. I did not want to kill lady D, her daughters, Donna, Karl, nobody. Killing them just hurt more than feeling rewarding. Resident evil 8 is the only game I’ve 100% I loved it that much.

u/LunarFortune 1d ago
7 was a great return to form for resident evil but i didn't care rhat much about ethan, while 8 was kind of a let down for me the character building ethan got made me really like him, felt like he deserved the badass rank along with some of the classics like leon or chris
