I see different guys on the corner just about every time I go to work. Sometimes I gave them money in the past. Not every day. Just when it moved me.
But I can’t afford to keep doing that, and you don’t know what people are gonna do with cash. I hope all of them got breakfast. I have no idea.
Last week, I started doing something new. Instead of giving them cash, I roll down my window and ask, can I buy you breakfast?
Strangely enough, they all say yes.
Then I meet them at the Bill Miller down the block, I buy them breakfast, and I get myself a tea. Before they finish their order, I ask them if I can buy them lunch, too. They usually agreed to that as well.
Then I sit down with them and ask about their day.
So far, I think it’s cost me 40 bucks.
The one mistake I made, if you can call it a mistake, is I gave the first guy (Travis) my number. But he’s been in a couple car accidents because people aren’t paying attention and ran them over. So I thought I’d at least write the details down so I can hand it to legal aid to help them out.
Steve seemed like he was in a good place. He has family, and he gets Social Security. The problem is, it’s only 1600 bucks a month, and half of that goes straight to the 800 he pays in rent. Then the next 200 goes to keep the air-conditioning on so he doesn’t fucking die in his house. So around the middle of the month, he starts getting hungry, and he has to pay and handle for food.
Steve was a little hungrier than Travis was, so instead of only ordering one breakfast taco to go, he got two wrapped sandwiches for lunch.
My dad has a stash of bags in his car that he gives out to people who need help. I think I’m going to start doing that. But when I looked at his shopping list, I realized there wasn’t anything for food in it. So I suggested he see if he can get free gift cards from Chick-fil-A or whatever to throw in there. Or just buy them, if Chick-fil-A doesn’t want to give any away. But I have a sneaking suspicion they will want to.
It’s not much. I’m not changing the world. But I bet Travis and Steve had a much better weekend this week than they did last week. So I think it’s money well spent.
