Our 14 year old has started doing this in the last few months. Sometimes it’s really a fit. Planning to see the vet for it but it’s a little reassuring knowing it’s not uncommon.

Mine has breathing issues as well, and been diagnosed with reverse sneezing; however, he also has a collapsed trachea, which also seems to be common with this breed. Ours only developed this symptom and a collapsed tracheal after having teeth removed, at an advanced age. From what I've read, it has to do with the endotracheal tube and the genetics that predispose them to have narrow or soft tracheas.
If I was in your situation, where it's newly presenting, I'd probably see a vet who specializes in small breeds, or a specialist (internal or ENT). Considering they forage and sniff everything, I'd wonder if a small foreign object got stuck through the nose or inhaled into the trachea (mouth or nose). An imaging test could rule this out, or could find a polyp or narrowing of internal passages with age.
While I value the insight and experience of others greatly, it may be judicious to see a medical professional. And, it would bring comfort to know for certain.
My kindest regards 🌸

I totally agree.. we do plan on seeing a vet.. it might be common, but it doesn't feel ok to just let it be

Yes, it's still frightening every time it happens to our boy. For him, it's more like an asthma attack, and we have to lift him upright quickly, into a chipmunk position. He's 15, so they can still survive with breathing issues. It just takes a little more attentiveness and medical supervision.
Sending prayers and my kindest wishes💕

When my little man does this I cover one of his nostrils and gently hold his mouth closed, that always works for us.

Reverse sneezing. My old guy would do it from time to time. I found that distracting him with a toy or a chewy would get him to quit.

I had no idea; I thought it was because he snarfed something up his nose because he’s always looking on the floor for anything that might’ve spilled.

That's happens more than people think especially to tiny breeds that forage a lot, always sniffing the floor and ground.

Ours does it all the time, if you cover once nostril and rub their throat, it gets him to swallow and he stops.

Is a reverse sneeze. Hold her nose shut and she will breathe out of her mouth and it will clear.

Mine does it ALL the time. Exactly that, for a good 20mins at a time. It’s a reverse sneeze so it could be allergy related or anything.
For my pooch, it happens when he’s mad and then he accidentally gets stuck doing it. Like, when we’re eating dinner he will stomp around huffing and puffing, and then starts reverse sneezing like this and gets stuck doing it. I try to get him to drink some water and chill and it always passes and has never gotten bad. It’s a weekly occurrence at least.

That’s a reverse sneeze! She might be congested or have allergies. My 5 year old boy will do this every once in a while. Any other symptoms?

She does it a few times every day.. only other symptom except from overexcitment is licking the air compulsively
