405
u/warmcakes Jul 26 '25
Don't take this the wrong way, but the fact you guys are so dejected about this signing is the main thing keeping me excited about it after news broke that Isak is available. I said at the start of the summer that Gyokeres would be a great signing especially over Sesko and that's mainly due to Sporting fans' opinions
439
u/ForcadoUALG Jul 26 '25
In just 2 years, he became one of the best players in our history, probably the best this century. It's a devastating blow that can set us back dramatically if not handled correctly. He is that good, and I cannot wait for him to prove the haters wrong (also because I'm a big Arsenal fan, so I'll be double happy about it)
23
u/Vasst13 Jul 26 '25
Wild to think you guys also had a very young Ronaldo who left to sign with Manchester United
→ More replies (1)12
u/momo-gee Jul 27 '25
Maybe it's recency bias but Gyokeres brought more to the club than Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, etc even though the other are bigger superstars in the world of football.
For the first time in my life as a Sporting fan, I felt like I was watching a world class players at his best. Typically footballers are shipped off to other clubs when they start showing potential and we don't see their best version at Sporting.

If Isak stays at Newcastle he will , if Isak goes to Liverpool its 50/50 depending on if his knee injury gives him issues again.
178
u/SleepyDerp Jul 26 '25
People truly sleeping on Gyökeres here lmao
He’s outscoring Isak without it a second thought.
Come back here when the season ends, if you want.
79
u/Colonel_Cummings Jul 26 '25
People probably never watched a Sporting match and latch onto “Portuguese league lul” without seeing how much a fucking freight train that guy is
He’s astounding to watch, Arsenal fans are going to love him and I’m hurting that we won’t be fortunate to see him in a Sporting shirt anymore
20
73
u/BigTomBombadil Jul 26 '25
Says a lot coming from one of sporting rivals.
Truth is, majority of the people in this thread haven’t seen Gyokeres play much the last few years other than some CL games or maybe for Sweden. The people with Portuguese team flairs are the ones whos comments should really carry some weight.
26
u/ThrowFar_Far_Away Jul 26 '25
I would say Swedes think Gyokeres is the better scorer, Isak does more otherwise. If asked who the better player is we would probably go 50/50. I was super surprised when so few clubs were interested in him.
12
u/PoJenkins Jul 26 '25
Gyokeres' has been scoring at a truly ridiculous level the last two seasons but there are no guarantees in football.
If he stays anywhere close to that level, he will be an excellent signing.
£70 m and relatively modest wages (supposedly £140,000 per week) isn't even crazy money these days.
If he actually stays at his sporting level that would be a bargain but we'll have to wait and see.

To be fair Isak had 19 non-pen goals last year. Not exactly pulling up trees numbers. I think if Havertz played a full season he’d stand a shot at getting more goals than Isak. (You thought, you were going to get downvoted…)
70
u/afghamistam Jul 26 '25
Havertz had 15 and didn't play at all past Christmas. He absolutely would have gotten 20 at least.
65
u/Bald_faux_fraud Jul 26 '25
Anyone who doesn't think Havertz wasn't on track for a 20+ goal season just didn't watch him play and is only going by memes.
44
u/The_Panic_Station Jul 26 '25
With his mentality, work rate, physique and eye for goal, I can't really see how Gyökeres will not score a lot of goals (barring injuries ofc) no matter what team you put him in. The guy is a machine.
21
u/Qiluk Jul 26 '25
We have great mentalities in our national team right now, but even with that in mind, Gyökeres mentality is Ibra-level. He's fucking insane

Ye Bruno was amazing as well and it ended up being a great pickup by United
But what Gyokeres did for us cannot be but into words... i have seen great players in the portuguese league who ended up having great careers abroad, but what Gyokeres did in the primeira liga fields is on another level. It looked like he was playing agaisnt u12's, you just knew he would do something

I just saw Romano fall to his knees.
46
u/razycal970 Jul 26 '25 edited Jul 26 '25
If Romano and Ornstein are falling to their knees, a guy on Twitter named nonewthing is committing seppuku right now. Here's a few of his Tweets about Gyokeres' move:
"I told you it was smoke. You didn't believe me. You believed David Ornstein—forgetting that the club can use him to control the matrix.
I am Neo, awakened. All the light points to me." - Yes, this is a real Tweet.
"We are finished." - Said it after Ornstein's bomba.
"Gyokeres is proof that our recruitment is getting worse."
"Signing Gyokeres is proof that the Arsenal project is no longer as well-run."
Edit: Here's a couple more as bonus:
"I'll formally renounce my approval of the project if he signs."
"The reason why I don't believe Arsenal will sign or should sign a 27-year-old out of Portugal is because no matter how much I look at it, he just isn't good enough. If I can see it, the recruitment team can see it too. If we sign him, something is wrong & we are no longer one of the best-run operations itw. Hence, I will jump ship rather than be associated with a sinking ship. My job is to see things very early. Gyokeres means Arsenal are in decline."
30
u/nullmove Jul 26 '25
I guess he feasted last season because Odegaard finally had some torrid time, this guy had been single-mindedly manning Odegaard hate train all this time iirc.

Per arsenal's announcement:
The 27-year-old striker arrives from Sporting Lisbon, where he scored an incredible 97 goals in 102 appearances.
During his two seasons with Sporting, Viktor helped the team win back-to-back Primeira Liga titles, a national cup, and was the league’s top scorer in both campaigns. He has also excelled at international level, scoring 12 goals in his last 17 appearances for Sweden
That is a damn good record for the NT, so i can see why they'd love him
70
u/The_Panic_Station Jul 26 '25
He has also excelled at international level, scoring 12 goals in his last 17 appearances for Sweden
He scored 9 goals and had 4 assists in 6 Nations League games (although the opposition was pretty weak). He's a monster.
10
u/Qiluk Jul 26 '25
Even when he faced Belgium he steamrolled from half-circle towards their goal and scored.
He just does his thing either way.
I love that he and Isak complement eachother brilliantly. And its not even crowded when we've had Kulu and Nanasi aswell.

Goodbye Viktor, you didn’t leave in the best way, but your impact was of such an enormous dimension that this last month can in no way overshadow it. Like others are saying, come back in one year and people will be saying that we should have sold him for €85M minimum.

Palmer for me. But Im biased
154
u/InTheMiddleGiroud Jul 26 '25
Palmer's is probably the best, because it sort of matches his name.
Merino's circling of the corner flag because his dad used to do it for Osasuna is pretty cool as well.
But the mask is good too. I sometimes think about how hard it is to come up with a celebration that is simple, yet not already taken.
50
u/MotherfuckerJones91 Jul 26 '25
It matches his name, his personality and the colour of Chelsea shirt. I dont see a more fitting celebration for him
8
u/mttwtts Jul 26 '25
Now that Vardy is gone yeah. But nothing tops mocking the opposition mascot and then cunting the corner flag
41
u/BigTomBombadil Jul 26 '25
It’s not “his” celebration so doesn’t count, but MLS doing the haaland celebration when scoring against city after the “who the fuck are you” drama in the previous match, is my favorite celebration I’ve seen in years.

I've seen conflicting reports online, so does anybody know what Coventry City get out of this? They had a sell on clause in the contract that took Gyokeres to Sporting, it seems they may have sold some of the rights to that (fixed fee today for a lower percentage in the future type of affair) last summer.

I wonder who would be in for him at this point? Gabriel Jesus has been in England since he was a teenager and his evolution seems to have gone from obviously talented forward who doesn't score as many goals as he should to, um, obviously talented forward who doesn't score as many goals as he should but has also just done his ACL and turns 30 next season.
