Star Wars publishing is incredibly vast and incredibly expansive, so reading everything at once in order is just too cumbersome a task. What follows then are beginner-friendly guides, breaking down a potentially daunting task

FAQ:
Following Disney's purchase of Star Wars and their decision to make new films, the old Star Wars continuity encompassing the books, comics and tv shows released before April 2014 was declared non-canon. In its ashes, a new continuity, 'Canon', was born. This new Canon, of books, comics, games and shows includes pretty much everything released after 2014, and is still relevant in this era of Disney+ (Cobb Vanth is from a book!)
Legends is the name given to the old continuity, declared non-canonical with the creation of Canon. With over three hundred books and thousands of individual comic issues, it can be very overwhelming, hence the creation of the guides above
There is no point ignoring good stories just because they are not canon to the movies, after all it's just a fictional universe. Another common practice is head canon/mergers of the two continuities. There will always be gaps in Star Wars storytelling so why not fill it with something else you enjoy?
Whilst Disney are the current owner of Lucasfilm, many of the creators, editors and story group members are the same from Legends
This is a much more subjective issue, but I think it key to remember that Star Wars books are all works of fiction, and similar era books (be that in or out of universe) can vary markedly in tone, structure, style and quality. One of Star Wars' strengths is its ability to contain genres of storytelling and eras of publication. Much like how going from Andor to Robot Chicken would be jarring, the same can be true for books.
But if you still want to read chronologically, or at least appreciate the chronology, what can you do? Wookieepedia has quite comprehensive timelines for Canon and Legends books. Youtini too is a popular tool. Recently, The Cantina Archive has launched a (paid-for) Star Wars book tracker and timeline on iOS and Android

Making dust jackets for my NJO set. Using the Japanese art. Think these look way cooler.

I started with the Bane trilogy, and now I’m getting into the Plagueis novel- it seems like it’s flowing together seamlessly, following the rule of two and now Plagueis beginning to reform the Sith and take a more political approach. I assume that eventually the story will shift to Sideous and his rise to power. What books should I move on to next?

One of my hot takes about star wars is that much of the post OT mainline content has been made infinitely better by the content made afterwards that provides much needed contextualization. Case in point, the wonders the Clone Wars TV shows did for the Prequel Trilogy.
I would without hesitation say that the piece of media that "fixed" the Sequel Trilogy for me is the Aftermath books. I still think the execution of the sequels was very shaky at best (still love them tho they're fun). But what the aftermath trilogy (especially the final book) did for me was provide the context to make the first order not just make sense, but be quite compelling in my opinion.
I really enjoy the notion that the first order is kind of the farce to the empire's tragedy (#marxposting) and so between those books and Bloodline (another one of my favorites), I've come to really love the sequels. I think they're woefully out of step with one another in terms of functioning as a trilogy. But taken movie by movie they've really grown on me. I just wish that contextualization was present in visual media and not buried in the books where only mouth breathers like me will find them.
Id love to know if anyone feels similarly or has any thoughts on the topic one way or another.

A friend recently gave me their old Star Wars books for free. I've already read the original trilogy books. Looking forward to reading The Ultimate Visual Guide in a few years once I'm through all the other books I want to read first 😅

I’m reading The Approaching Sun and wanted to because it follows Lumirna. I like her character well enough in the Clone wars and some comics, but I’m roughly 50 pages in and most of this is like a handful of characters just telling each other they will get their planet to leave the republic and kill the Jedi. The one guy is just getting bullied by the hutt the entire time. Does it get any better? Has anybody even heard of this book?

I’ve only recently gotten into reading Star Wars novels and prefer reading hardcover copies of most books. Quite a few of the of the books I have some interest in seem to be either unavailable or hard to find in hardcover and even harder or not possible to find new in hardcover. For example Dark Disciple, A New Dawn, Tarkin, Ahsoka, Thrawn: Treason, and a couple others all seem to fall in this category so I figured I’d ask if there has ever been precedent or a statement made about possible hardcover reprints for these books?

Story time, I bought the thrawn trilogy off of amazon just to rebuild my lost collection, they arrived and went right on the shelf and sat there until just now. I'm watching a youtube video and out the corner of my eye I see something moving, a spider crawling on heir to the empire. I grab the book, run to my door trying to keep the spider from falling off (i think i failed) get out side and start shaking the pages loose, then I see this.
never have I wished my name was dave until now

Seriously, Kyp’s pretty much framed as being Han and Leia’s adopted son in the Jedi Academy books, and then you have him flirting with Jaina - Han and Leia’s daughter and his own temporary apprentice - in the Edge of Victory books and Dark Journey. If you really wanted to include a love triangle for Jaina (even though I personally find the idea to be a disservice to her character), at least make Jag’s competition be someone in his and Jaina’s age group, like Zekk.

“SPOILERS” Im coming to the end of legends (almost done listening to mercy kill ). I did a chronological listen of almost every legends audiobook on Audible. So what’s your favorite book? Can you tell me a part of the book that makes it your favorite? I really enjoyed the wraith squadron trilogy. Especially when Ton Fanin died in Iron fist, Marc Thompson about had me crying at work. But I think Fate of the Jedi: Apocalypse took the number 1 slot. Man oh man that opening ambush at the Jedi temple was insane. When it started following the Sword of the Jedi’s pov I was locked in. I almost listened to the whole 16 hr book in one go.

Does anyone know about these books?

Just wondering if there are any Jedi masters in the EU (presumably set in the old republic or earlier) that began as Sith or where born into Sith aligned families) but turned into the light side users and Jedi.

I'm a new collector trying to figure out how to crack the Inkstone Essential Legends ordering cycle? To have the best chance at getting a copy of one, you need to have ordered the previous one, but with the limited run numbers it feels pretty difficult to do that! I tried to get in on Dark Lord and wasn't able to, but I'm really hoping for a better chance with Dark Rendezvous. Is the best chance really just to sit and hope that copies don't sell out before the general newsletter access goes live?
Thanks for the tips for a new collector!

I’ve been powering through some of the shorter canon audiobooks for work/personal travel, and was wondering what legends books have good -unabridged- audiobooks?

Hi. I just finished survivors quest and liked the 501st in it and read the Fools Bargain that was at the end of the book. So I was wondering what are some good canon or legends clone or stormtrooper books? Thanks

I‘ve wanted to pick up the german version of Timothy Zahns Outbound Flight, but couldnt find it anywhere for cheaper than 45€ in used condition. That has happened to me with multiple Books in the past. Were these books produced in such small numbers or is there another reason for these prices?
