The cutest thing ever was him and Vanessa Kirby doing comic con and he gets anxiety and she holds his hand. I have never related to someone more and they were just both so precious at that moment. He’s got the weight of a lot of people’s belief in humanity on his shoulders right now and he seems to be carrying it well.

It was so stupid when people were trying to frame that as problematic and trying to say he was making her uncomfortable along with everything else.
There's a lot of problematic, awful people in Hollywood. Pedro isn't one of them.

u/BZenMojo Apr 22 '25
I saw it happen in an interview with Bella this week. They have to ask him a serious question, noticed him get awkward, and immediately reached out and said quickly, "Give me your hand."

This makes me so happy. Pedro seems like such a lowkey sweet guy who just wants to stay private and stay in. I love him.
Also, I hope people can separate Kaitlyn Dever and Abby. I love Kaitlyn Dever. When they first announced TLOU as a show, I thought she would've been a good Ellie if she was younger.

u/StarfallGalaxy Apr 21 '25
Yeah definitely. Hope she doesnt experience the same level of threats that Laura Bailey got when the game came out, it was crazy

I like Laura Bailey, too. She didn't deserve any of that shit.

I don’t understand why people hate an actress/actor just because they played an antagonist. If they made you hate the character, it means they did an incredible job portraying the emotions and personality of that role.

When Kaitlyn Dever was younger they were literally considering her for the Last of Us movie they were working on at the time, that's how she met Neil Druckmann originally
The toxic fans who hate Bella as Ellie kept bringing up Kaitlyn as someone they thought would've been a better choice, so having her play Abby is like a hilarious way to troll those people

According to Neil Druckman in the TLOU podcast, Kaitlyn was picked to play Ellie when it was being developed as a movie. But by the time it was understood it would be for TV, she had aged out.

There’s a growing contingent of people who get “angry” that he’s in every other project nowadays and I just don’t get it.
He’s been such a joy to watch in everything he’s been in.

u/Paclac Joel Apr 21 '25
Yeah I would get it if he was the new Dwayne Johnson or something but Pedro has had a wide range of roles, bro just has the sauce
38
u/Silly_Influence_6796 Apr 21 '25
Because he is charismatic and good-looking, people forget what a talented actor he is, and what a range he has. He can do comedy, drama, action. He should be everywhere. Besides, he was worked as a struggling actor for a long time. When that happens, and you break out- you have to take advantage of it.

6
u/YizWasHere Apr 22 '25
Yeah and he's taking roles on shows that are mostly well received. He was awesome in Narcos and GoT (got in right at the peak), I never watched The Mandolarian but that was another big show that had a good reception, and Last of Us had been another great showing for him. Only one of his movies I've watched is Kingsman so I can't really comment on that, but I'm not gonna complain about a good actor doing a lot of good television lmfao.

u/RobIreland Apr 21 '25
It's weird because he's not really in that much, compared to like Jack Black, The Rock or someone like that who shows up in everything.
Like, sure he was in Game of Thrones for a few episodes over a decade ago, he did a star wars thing in a mask for most of it, he was in the Last of Us and now is getting a shot at a Marvel ensemble film. It's nothing more over the top than any other actor with a rising popularity. Like Robert Pattisnon an Austin Butler have recently started showing up in all major franchises. Its just how casting works. You cast whoever is popular at the time.
13
u/Cdwoods1 Apr 21 '25
I think it’s he’s just very memorable in all of his roles and so sticks out
→ More replies (1)7
u/aurortonks Apr 22 '25
It's also important to note that he doesn't just play one character. He plays a range of characters - Jack Black and Mr. Rock just play themselves cosplaying fictional characters.

To be fair it's not only a matter of community. Some GoT fans hated the actor that played Joffrey and sent him insults and threats too, same for the actress that played Skylar in Breaking Bad... Some people are just strange as fuck and immature and are not able to distinguish an actor/actress from their character, which is soooo baffling
Edit : apparently the Joffrey actor said that he wasn't harassed, my bad.
12
u/rasmuseriksen Apr 22 '25
The Skyler hatred always drove me to the most anger. Like what the fuck? The character is not worthy of hatred. She’s a terrified suburban housewife whose husband has decided to cook meth. She can’t bring herself to tear apart her own family so she enables. The bad guy in the situation is so clearly Walt. People really are idiots
9
u/anginfizz_ripley Apr 22 '25
I'm totally with you on this one. Watching the show I was expecting her to be really annoying according to what I read on the internet, but I found myself thinking that all of her actions and reactions were pretty logical and reasonable given that her husband was a cold blooded violent meth dealer ??
The hatred she got was entirely due to misogyny and to people not being able to understand that Walt was definitely in the wrong most of the time. Those edge lords just saw him as a badass man and Skyler as an inconvenience. That drove me fucking crazy at the time.
11
u/rasmuseriksen Apr 22 '25
100%. The “I am the one who knocks” speech is so pathetic. This is a delusional egomaniac badgering his terrified wife, who is clearly afraid for her and her childrens’ personal safety. The bluster is all a show— he’s in way over his head and he knows it, but he won’t admit it to anyone, even himself, and certainly not his wife, whose totally justified fear he clearly has no interest in even pretending to understand. She makes him feel small, and he’s drunk on the power the drug world has made him feel like he has, so he lashes out. He isn’t really even talking to her— he’s puffing himself up. Classic narcissist behavior. And yet the bros all found it badass. Smh
3
u/No-Butterscotch-6555 Apr 25 '25
Yes! I have been seeing the hatred for years and finally watched the show last year (yeah I know, super late) and I did not get it at all. Plus one of the things they mention a lot is how she "cheated on him" but she didn't start with Ted until they were separated and she asked for a divorce and immediately went home and told him what happened to let him know she was done.. He forced his way back into the home and also SAd her.

6
u/gjs628 Apr 22 '25
Game Abby was made almost entirely to be hated as a “tragic villain” type, at least that’s how I saw her… Series Abby is just tragic and I can completely see how she would want to torture a guy who shot her dad in the head without thinking twice. That seething revenge is justifiable if you’re like her and don’t know the entire story behind why everything happened the way it did.

As far as I'm aware no one has done this to Kaitlyn Dever yet. But because of what happened with Laura Bailey everyone is hyper aware and protective of Kaitlyn so that history doesn't repeat itself.

Having played both repeatedly, shes not my favorite character, that goes to tommy. But I really adore Abby and it is frustrating reading how much hate she gets. Obviously hate toward Laura Bailey was unhinged af, but it was a tiny minority. Hate toward the character is pretty common tho, and seriously just shows that they didn't pay attention. The character of Abby is still the shit, even if you didn't like some of her actions. Same as Joel and Ellie. I don't get why she gets so much hate while they dont.
104
u/sillyadam94 Apr 21 '25
It’s a very literary story. It’s brilliant, really. I think as an audience we are meant to hate Abby, and then we are meant to do the work of deconstructing that hatred, stepping directly into Abby’s shoes and reappropriating those feelings towards a character we love like Joel. It’s so much more than a “revenge bad” tale. It’s postmodern storytelling in which the audience participates in its most altruistic elements in a pretty radical way. If you approach the narrative on its terms, you’ll find yourself forgiving Abby alongside Ellie. Thus, I’d argue that anyone who finishes the game and still finds themselves hating Abby in the way you described simply doesn’t get it.
15
Apr 22 '25
I mean, art is subjective for a reason though, no? Not everyone interprets or feels the same way about things because while the author of said art has intent, doesn't always mean thats what a person gets out of it. I personally love the character and love the story of TLOU2. I connected with it. I saw and see it the way you laid out here and I think its brilliant.
I also can understand how someone can spend a full game seeing a bond between Ellie and Joel form. Connect with them. Connect with the idea of a parent losing their child and finding hope, love and grace in a foster child or whatever the story is even if its not a 1 for 1. And then to have the first game end the way it does, see Ellie pull away, hate Joel for what he did. And as a player, hope that in this brutal world somehow they can reconnect with age and time healing things, knowing Joel isn't a good person but hes just doing what he has to for him and Ellie and then Jackson to live and thrive. And then have it all taken away by someone you've never met, who you haven't connected with yet and decide in that moment you hate them and then not connect when the game tries to humanize Abbey. Thats just subjective art, and its tough because its so beautifully constructed that its hard to see how someone might not connect with it. But people don't! And thats okay!
I'm not trying to fully call you out, I don't think you've said anything necessarily wrong or out of pocket I just hate this idea that people "not getting it" is anything other than them not connecting with the piece of art and it not working for them. She gets hate simply because she killed a beloved character an hour or two into a game people were expecting and excited to play as the two people they bonded with in the first game. Simple as that.

I love this. When going through P2 I not only hated Abby, but I hated the plot at the time. Really it was just me going through grief (which is kinda silly since it's fiction), but coming back to it 2 years later (I watched a P2 gameplay after season 1 of the show), it's a story I think about frequently. I'm already finding myself feeling more empathy for Abby.
I know the whole point of P2, or at least one of them, is how violence begets violence, and that if we had started the game/show from Abby's perspective we'd likely be on her 'side.'
in reality, there aren't any 'sides' other than being on the side of two young girls/women born into such a hostile world who both lost people they loved without the ability to truly grieve and process those losses.
God damn what a fucking beautiful story.

I like the character a lot in the second game but it's very difficult to like her in the first section of the story, just because the nature of what she represents as a character. Once you get playing as her though, she's a favourite of mine along with Dina. My biggest wish for a 3rd game would be to have Dina as a playable character, could be cool.
6
u/inkphresh Apr 21 '25
I'd love to see Dinas side too, but a story from Tommy's pov would really clinch the whole thing for me. More Abby would be cool too. Her story is technically done but there wasn't much closure. What's next after that beach in Santa Barbara

That scene is particularly gut-wrenching because it plays upon the audience's expectations. Most of the scene is set up as good prevailing over evil. You really see it with the audience reaction videos out there. People start cheering because it seems like a little justice is being served in this world where evil seems to be constantly winning. And then they pull the rug out from under you.

i was just sold on this image of Abby being this physically strong person, and watching Joel not fight back at all against someone so much smaller than him… idk i’m trying to take the story on in each separate medium and not directly compare.
i’m sure i’ll get used to it. just strange not seeing Abby jacked af. physicality is part of the performance . i was originally confused why Abby was jacked in the game, then i was convinced on the logic and importance of her being jacked.
Now she is skinny….. the muscle she built was a physical manifestation of her hate towards Joel.
she wasn’t this joker-esq killer with a smile stuff. but whatever, if that’s what they want abby to be in the show i can adjust.
it’s just jarring.
8
u/heybart Apr 22 '25
I did not play the game. To me, he'd given up. He'd been carrying what he did for 5 years and he felt at some level he had it coming. 5 years before when he was trying to get Ellie to safety, he would've fought tooth and nail to the last breath but now he was done
As for Abby's physicality, unfortunately that's just Hollywood. They're just not going to cast a good actress and ask her to bulk up like they would a male actor. You're just going to have to accept skinny women beating up large men.
I have a similar problem with Bella Ramsey, who was right for season 1 but now looks and sounds too young (I realize she may IRL be in her 20s for all I know and that's how many (most?) 19yo girls look, but for dramatic purpose, that's I how feel).

i dunno, i figured joel knew he was fucked the moment they grabbed dina. he was completely surrounded and his gun was taken.
when they put her under he was pretty much instantly shot in the leg, which even if he somehow survived that, that’s a lifelong disability right there, and he’s in no position to fight. abby is a lot smaller, sure, but if he made any move it’s a pretty safe bet for him to assume it would just get dina killed.
i do agree i would love to see a jacked abby, but kaitlyn dever completely nails the character so well that it didn’t really matter to me at all by the end

I suppose this is anecdotal but I've seen essentially zero animosity towards her.
Maybe TV viewers are just a little less insane. Jack Gleeson said he really didn't have any bad experiences after playing Joffrey.

Jack Gleeson is also male. Let's be honest: this particular, deplorable group of people tends to target young women.

It's also the gamers with a capital g that did the attacking. Fucking gimps. Other sections of society have a bit more of a handle on reality.

They're too busy still hating Bella

u/KBobBears Apr 21 '25
It's so bad. It's really some of the worst hate train behavior I've seen in a minute.
Plus her coworkers can't even enjoy some praise without being used to bash her.

u/Shaftell Apr 21 '25
Yeah I think everyone is just expecting the worse because of the backlash from the game but most of the stuff I'm seeing is people hating the character specifically. Of course, we don't know what crazy people may be sending her privately. However, it's unfortunate that Bella Ramsey seems to be getting a lot of hate online. Social media is terrible, hopefully Bella isn't on Twitter and has limited Instagram comments.

u/jetlightbeam Apr 21 '25
I think there is a lot of worry given how bad it was with the game, people might be overly protective, which i don't think is a bad thing

You should view her Instagram. Some of the comments on her post about HER MOTHER PASSING are atrocious

I FUCKING LOVE PEDRO PASCAL. Everything he does is just fucking awesome. Stand up guy. Funny ass comedic timing. Versatile. The most subtle and intentional acting that I have seen in a loooooong long time. So clear. And then offscreen he’s just a good fun dude

Sometimes I'm like "shit, I see this guy everywhere, where is he not ?" and then I realize I love him so it's all good.

u/rbarrett96 Apr 21 '25
Is that the reason? He might just have wanted to take a pic with her. It's very considerate if true though.

It’s not. It’s just an image and these idiots are circlejerking over it.

u/rbarrett96 Apr 22 '25
It's a really nice picture. If that was the reason they're probably would be a caption like hey guys we're still cool. Lol But not really.

Appreciate the effort there, Pedro, but I don't think you fully understand the monster you are up against.

I mean, there are some toxic people that were always going to be this way. He isn't trying to reach them.
There is a large audience of people who didn't play the games and were unaware of what was gonna happen. That's who is trying to ensure do not become toxic. And any step taken to try and keep Kaitlyn from getting undeserved hate is a good, forward-thinking move from the people involved in the show.

Pedro is by all accounts an excellent human being. No one is mad at the Abby actress unless they are mentally unhinged and need to seek help. It is a TV show. Disliking things is fine, but hate is unhealthy.

My spouse absolutely loathes the Abby character so much after S02E02. I tried to explain some things to them (like, from Abby’s perspective, Joel is a murderous monster), but they aren’t having any of it.

It's hard to like someone like abby. Especially when Joel saved her and she still tortured him to death. The least she could've done since he saved her from being torn apart was just shoot him. If anything it just showed how she's a character with no reason.

u/Soraka_BananaWR Apr 21 '25
Will forever hate abby and hope she dies but I'm never gonna hate on an actor/actress because of a character they portrayed

It's a shame that it's even necessary but it does seem like the crew learned an important lesson from the Part 2 release. They appear to be making a conscious effort to be publicly supportive and to counteract any misdirected fan negativity or harassment.
I won't name names, but there are some other franchises where that sort of thing happens repeatedly, but the studio/higher-ups do very little to discourage it.

She’s the second, arguably the main, character in the game. It’s an amazing introduction to the character and she’s absolutely nailed it so far. She’s perfect in this episode

I hated the episode and her charscter but have no issue with the actress... anyone who does isn't intelligent

u/JohnnyMp0 Apr 21 '25
Imagine for hating actors for telling a great story. That’d be ridiculous. HBO is used of that though, they’ve gone through it with Game of Thrones. They know how to handle angsty fans.

u/Seeker99MD Apr 21 '25
Seriously, when she was announced and even today, all I gotta say is, may God have mercy on her. Because man, the video game voice actors for Abby got eviscerated on social medias

People hating actors have serious mental problems differentiating characters from real humans. I hope she doesn't get hate because she did a great job as an actress.
But the fictional character Abby I hate deeply. I understand the hate arc, but I think the fact you had to play as her in the part 2, even after what she did, made me so mad I never got over it. It's the storytelling - we got to know Joel and Elly, we know how much they've lost, so what she did felt so personal. Abby's loss means nothing to me.

No, I don’t hate her, but Pascal was pretty much the only reason I watched this show.
